Servant to the Unlife - A Warhammer Fantasy Quest

"Mikhail is missing. So does Albert." The ghoul woman pre-empts your questions. "The spy and the treasurer. They were supposed to return with the material shipment yesterday. One day delay was possible, but I have instructions to go look for them after that."

Wonderful. Additional responsibilities.

"I am going to set out to look for him. Mikhail is busy in Waldenhoff, a-and." The woman stutters a bit, looking somewhere behind you. "I would deeply appreciate it if you came with us."

" I need the money to set up a workshop." You say, slowly and deliberately.

"I understand but - I am afraid only Albert could help. We don't even know where he stores the coin. Well, maybe Mikhail knows, but he is not saying."
She's annoyed with having to do everything.

"There is not a whiff of divinity in this place." While the man talked, you decided to examine the corpses - finding only blood, ghoul saliva, and shyish of the recently dead. "People who lived here were liars and deceivers, using names of the divine for their own benefit."

"Ah. As long as we could purchase... Services... from them, it really wasn't my concern." The man you saved - Albert, supposedly - wilts under your unimpressed stare. These imperials are so ready to kill for their gods and yet ready to blasphemy against them so easily?

The mercenary, meanwhile, looks at you with interest.

"Spoken like a priest."

"There are more gods in these lands than barbarian idols of fools and murderers."
She's a priest and spellcaster which is a skillset that has a lot of synergy.

"I, Johann von Gablitz, baron of these lands declare my willingness to acknowledge Ferdinand Von Shueger's claim to the Old Keep - as long as you help us to stop magical mischief in these lands. And I promise you; you do not want armies of witch hunters to crawl all over every single inch of this land."
Getting that legitimacy for the boss is something he'd be happy about.

"Oh? And what do you think about our humble slice of the Empire? "

"People are poor and dirty. Your houses are ugly." You pause, getting a vague feeling that, perhaps, you might want to say something nice to this person who has yet to terribly offend you. "Your food is not terrible."

Unexpectedly, the man chuckles. "Now, that I didn't expect. Most newcomers complain about bland flavors and lack of variety."
Being able to talk to people is good.

"We should coordinate our efforts, and I definitely could use a spellcaster friend. For now, though - If you, perhaps allow me to ask -what displeases you so? I haven't seen even as much as a hint of good mood on your features ever since that damnable abbey."

"I don't want to be here." You answer easily and quickly. "This land is foreign to me."

"We all get homesick, sometimes. I should tell you about Middleland someday... Regardless, just wandering the cold streets of Gablitz alone is not the way to deal with sadness, yes? Come, there are better places to be." Against your better judgment, you follow the man. Although, with your retinue, in a place like this - what do you have to fear, really?
Good to see her making ties with people.

...Then some annoying children - after spontaneously deciding that bothering you is some sort of a trial of courage - manage to extract the fact that you "serve the gods, no, absolutely not a Morrite" with their incessant pestering. Suddenly you are surrounded by people - moments later you are providing people with stilted, fumbling well-wishes and curt warnings about inevitable fate of their souls.

Eventually, after dutifully informing husband-and-wife-to-be of the factual truth that the fate of unfaithful liars in the afterlife is terrible and that they should not make careless promises to each other, you are politely left alone with your cups.

For the rest of the day you are surrounded by people who are trying to be happy in spite of their sorry lot in life, and the sight of these silly peasants trying to enjoy life in this miserable, gloomy land does provide you with some hope that you yet might find some things to be happy about in your future.
She may not like them but she respect how they're trying to be happy.

"We have not been introduced." You'll probably going to be forced to interact with the man on a regular basis. "Nefertari, of... nowhere in particular."

"That's... An uncommon name." The man blinks. According to Yulia, he spent day and night unconscious, and yet his eyes still look like the last time he slept was when The Imperishable walked the land. "But it is nothing to worry about! What can I do for one of my saviors?"

"Provide me with the money so I can do my job, for starters." You finally allow yourself faint hope that you are finally done with doing other's people work. "My workshop stands bare of even the most basic comforts and implements. I also need a source of high-quality materials. Durable kinds of rocks, preferably in huge uncut slabs, gems, and corpses of remarkable individuals."

"That's... Quite the request. I am afraid to say that Ferdinand's access to money is quite limited as of now... Still!" he adds hurriedly "I can make some basic arrangements. But if you want regular shipments, I am going to need some help."

...Why can't people just do their own jobs?
Needing to help people do their jobs is understandably annoying.

"I'd lie if I said that carpets and drapes do much to improve my mood. Lady Nefertari, is there anything that could be done to provide me with a body of some sort? " Your other servant, however, does not seems to be particularly happy.

It takes a couple of moments to carefully consider the request. The nobleman, in spite of his well-retained mental faculties seems to be slow to adjust to his new state and is majorly weakened when away from his remains. Perhaps, if you had access to a still-warm corpse of his close relative you could fashion a pseudo-resurrection, of sorts... Or you could imbue him into a very high-quality stone simulacra of his former vessel.
That's an interesting project.

eel free to request links to the Orokos history for this game.

Congratulations - You made acquittance with a neighbor baron, a strangely friendly warrior eager to cooperate with you, and a obtained a budget. You know that local mages are vanishing, and neighbor "Morrite" abbey got attacked by a pack of ghouls, led by an unusually big one.
As result of improving your living conditions and having a good time spooking peasants, your Diplomacy score is increased by 1. Continue increasing it, and you'll receive one (1) permanent bonus AP for social actions only. Other statistics likewise grant bonuses when improved; not necessarily always bonus AP.
Improvements in your workshop and living space provide a small bonus to crafting projects. Imbuing people into items counts as crafting.

Ferdinand has no further requests and made no efforts to contact you again. Yet.

I now offer the name choice once again given that I forgot to make it explicitly free during the past vote, and it was attached to the plan segments regardless, making it kind of a very awkward. It shall not make appearances past this update, altho you could always write-in it.

There is non-zero chance I forgot something, or SV ate some of edits resulting in deprecated segments and other ??? sort of stuff sneaking into the latest draft, so feel free to poke me.
Maybe we can get the warrior as a possible combat trainer.

Yeah, it can't be stressed enough how important having a good reputation among the populace and nobles is. Not only from a safety standpoint but from an intellectual standpoint. A bad reputation leads to people being afraid of you. Fear in the short term is useful; however, the problem is that people eventually stop being constantly terrified, and you can't keep eyes on everyone 100% of the time. If we intend to establish a branch of the mortuary cult here, which I think we should do, we should present an image that gets people to want to join the cult not out of fear or avarice that will result in betrayal at the first chance they get, but instead because they think it's the one way they can better their lives and the lives of their loved ones.
Reputation is essential.

[X] Plan Rebirth of the Living, Gossip with the Dead

Connections and helping minons seems good.

[X] Do not

I want her to keep her name.

To see effortposting in your thread is satisfying like very few other things.

Here is a thing to chew on - ghouls growing abnormally, monstrously big is a known phenomena that typically has a very specific cause.

When introduced to this proposal, Helmut - the nobleman ghost - is somewhat concerned at the fact that you'll be doing a lot of talking, but unless you have a major foot-in-mouth moment, he think there is a reasonable chance things work out. Or at, least, that "no" is going to be polite if things do not work out.

Just noticed the edit, can't really help the lack of diplomacy in this case, our best diplomat is a ghost, maybe if we can find her a good enough corpse and disguise it to look alive, but that will take a while...

Huh actually @Prospalz can Nehertari channel Lathain? That is allow herself to be temporarily possessed by the ghost so she can be diplomatic at the locals and the like? I expect this to take an action if we can do it, but I am curious if it's viable at all.

Not at this time, and particularly not Lathain.

But willing channeling of spirits for yourself and others is a viable field of study.

OK, that puts us back to getting her a body which is going to be rather hard since elf corpses do not grow on trees... at least not around here.

I wonder though, how human-like (for lack of a better word) can we make stone vessels. Could we make something that is small enough and flexible enough that is could pass for human with a cloak and a mask? Having one's diplomat look like a nazgul isn't ideal, but it is better than them being visibly a ghost.

And just to be clear, do we know if she would prefer this to a human body? Obviously that would be easier, but the last thing we need is a resentful undead elf.
Lathain is not very enthused about sub-par vessels and thinks that it'll inhibit her talents and abilities more than it would really help you. She'll bear with it if you consider it a true necessity.

When asked about what would be a "suitable vessel", she says something like "Nefertari, dear, I appreciate the gesture - but that's beyond you right now" and is reticent to explain further.

Got it, we are going to have to look into another diplomat for in person work, no sense annoying her with a subpar vessel. Oswald maybe? He did not strike me as particularly skilled, but he does have the advantage of being a local and alive. Alternatively stick a mask and a cloak on Helmut. As a local noble he should have some diplomatic skill.

I'm a little late to the party but going to put forward a plan. There's a couple of reasons for this:

- I really like the idea of making the Baron out with his old age issue, but at the moment I do not think it's a good sell, for two reasons. The spell involves the Baron appearing dead for multiple days, when nobility is involved and with his situation as precarious as it is he's at real risk of waking up buried with no town, he needs a reason to trust us first. Second, he's asked us to perform an investigation and we're coming back to him with this offer before we've closed it as requested. Thankfully there's a very good solution to this. When we finish the investigation and the problem is dealt with the Baron will have more reason to trust us and may be in a better position to take a several day long nap.
-I feel Plan: Divinity and Revification Studies doesn't do enough to move us forward on finishing our task, it sets us up, which is nice, but once we get one win under our belt we can start asking for more.

Therefore I present:

[X] Plan finishing the job
-[X] Try to learn more about local divinities. Sigmar is a god of hammers, right?
-[X] Study the flow of winds in the region. Creating a full wind map of the region in less than a month is probably impossible, but now that you had seen disturbed winds over Gablitz, make you think that, perhaps, you have other means of finding the perpetrators.
-[X] Set out to Waldenhoff to seek out alleged "black market." Oswald, mercenary from Gablitz is ready to accompany you. Mikhail is also there, allegedly.
-[X] Attempt to craft war statuary. It is not much, but Albert provided you with a small shipment of medium-quality materials for your projects... You are reasonably sure these remains of some sort of shattered statue. Still, it is enough; you'll manage.
-[X] Or, perhaps, interrogate some other corpses in your possession? You have quite a few available thanks to your choices and Yulia's efforts.

The hope is that between talking to the dead ghouls that were storming the temple, studying the winds of magic and visiting the black market we have enough chances to succeed to get an idea of where the magical coven is and who we are dealing with. This should be enough to decide what to do about them next turn. Getting an idea of the local gods will be useful for convincing the Baron and other people we are a legit, if weird priest. And we might need some muscle for dealing with the coven. War statuary seems more reliable than experimenting on ghoul force and it's another job we can maybe tick off.

Hopefully there's some side benefits to studying the winds of magic (information and where is good to cast big spells), going to the black market (somewhere to buy and sell things when we have money) and talking to our stored corpses (maybe one of them will be useful)
