Servant Heart: You are the Servant

The Aristov family patriarch already has trusted and reliable subordinates, which means the protagonist will have some ways to go if they want to make it into Mr. Aristov's inner circle.
I wouldn't say that, you chose the protegee option to your already pretty close to the inner circle. if not already there.
Now I'm intrigued, as in this universe Russia also tried and failed to annex Ukraine.
I wonder if the regime in Servant-world-Russia is similar to the one in real-life; a post-truth regime that has no genuine beliefs or ideologies, where Tsarist and Soviet flags are displayed and waved right next to each other.
All I am going to say is this: "The Failure of the Annexation of Ukraine caused the end of Vladimir Putin." The man who replaced him...

depending on who you ask, is more competent... or effective then Putin was. But who is lacking in imagination.
Mister Aristov probably wouldn't approve of that. And there seems to be no love lost between him and the Kremlin, who attempted to extort him and demanded that he swear loyalty to them.
Instead, he replied "Idi na Khuy" and decided to carve out his own fortune and power, independent of the Kremlin.
Vasily has many reasons to hate the current Russian establishment. and just the Russian federation in general.

There are certain actions that Vasily did in the 90's this quest, during his brief attempt to win favor with Yeltsin... which didn't end well.

But it gave him valuable experience that allowed him to become the greatest Warlord of the 21st century.
One hell of a formidable man…but his greatest weakness is clearly his children, who all have their own personal struggles and issues.
... If you think Vasily's children are the problem... then oh boy have you not been paying attention.

I wouldn't say that, you chose the protegee option to your already pretty close to the inner circle. if not already there.
I'm pretty sure we'd almost have to be already there. A mercenary isn't going to underestimate the value of an in the family doctor considering the difference a few minutes can make between life and death, to say nothing of potential medication for mental illnesses associated with combat. Odds are we're brought in as a matter of course for the sake of security clearance.

... If you think Vasily's children are the problem... then oh boy have you not been paying attention.
Yeah. Pretty much the main issue is that Vasily has managed to define the downsides of being the aristocracy to his children without managing to pass on any of mentality that encourages investment in that lifestyle. He has major problems and some tunnel vision. It's an interesting contrast for him to be so self absorbed while all his children are fixated on grass is greener on the other side gaze at the world beyond there gilded palace.

Vasily is also not just a mercenary, he is a true noble Duke who treats himself and his family as such... though in saying that... I am very happy with what I have written for both sides of the equation for everyone... because I decided to write stuff for both in case one wins for my own enjoyment.

But the thing for them, at least they all understand that their father has risked life limb, and much more, to turn himself from an impoverished duke, that was living on inheritance, to one of the most powerful men in the world.

at least they understand things, rather then just be ignorent and... well, hate their dad for no reason.

Let's do full reviews! I'm so glad to have discovered your work, Magoose. (I'm currently reading through La Chanson de la Victoire. I won't participate in the ongoing sequel until I've caught up on my reading and know the full story)

You have always lived to serve the family.
A truly loyal friend or subordinate, in my opinion, is not someone who just blindly follows. They are a person who won't hesitate to tell the other person 'no, I disagree with this, I don't think this is a good idea.'

And what does it mean to be loyal to a family, when a family is comprised of multiple individuals who may have goals and wishes that clash with each other? Who do you support and oppose, and why?

bound to the whims of those far wealthier, more influential
Does the Servant seek to merely surrender their will to whatever the wishes of the family are, or do they seek to achieve and gain something for themselves in their current employment?

'You think you are doing this for him? You are doing this for power, the same as all of us.'
- McMafia

unshackled by the ordinary moralities that guide most
In this world where power and influence are on the line, morals and ethics are all too often just a thing that gets you killed.

For you, it was a choice, one made willingly and without regret.
Interesting. So the protagonist could have chosen another profession. Could have gone their own way and likely found a good job and lived comfortably. But no, they chose to do this.

in the shadows of power, not in its light
The Servant is not to be placed in the spotlight. Instead, they are to remain out of sight of the public eye.

The family's wealth and influence shielded you from the mundane struggles of life. You did not fret over debts, nor were you ensnared by the worries of your peers
So there is good along with the bad. But now that the family - whichever it may be - is destined for turbulent and difficult times, the Servant may soon find that the bad may start to outweigh the good.

They operated in spheres where laws were malleable, where truths were relative, and where loyalty could mean the difference between life and death
All that power and wealth has its downsides. Is it worth being that rich and powerful if you have to be constantly looking over your shoulder?

You were not their equal, of course, but you were indispensable
So many autocrats look down on the people of the populations they rule over, and so many business owners look down on their own employees. Yet without these people and employees, they would have nothing.

to know their secrets, protect their vulnerabilities, and ensure their triumphs
Why am I now thinking of the Praetorians of Rome and the Janissaries of the Ottomans?

whispers, of betrayal, of schemes unfolding within their gilded walls. You might have been their servant, but now, the choice you made long ago would be tested
The family is not as strong as it once was. It is under strain, from both external and internal forces. And the Servant is right in the middle of it.

The Protégé: Once a ward of the family, you were raised alongside them.
Interesting. So the Servant is a ward of this family, i.e. a child or young person who is watched over by someone other than their parents. Is the Servant an orphan? If not, where are their biological parents?
And having been raised within the family, what sort of values and principles would the Servant have been taught? Who was/is their tutor?

Though technically a servant, you share bonds of kinship with some family members, complicating your place in the household
Oof. So the Servant is more than a mere servant. Definitely a complication.

Healing and Caregiving You have a deep knowledge of medicine and the art of healing, both physical and emotional. A Rare talent for someone in this field.
Never underestimate the doctor.
Why am I suddenly imagining the Servant being requested/instructed to participate in an interrogation of a prisoner?

Charisma and Persuasion Your charm and eloquence can sway even the most stubborn minds. You are skilled at convincing others to see things your way or manipulating them into doing what you want.
So not just skilled in medicine, but also very good at winning people over, and being charming when need be.
Now I am thinking of Rokuro "Rock" Okajima. Not a combat guy, but he nevertheless proves to be useful to the Black Lagoon company.

And there's always a chance for the Servant to learn further skills! In my opinion, the above two alone won't be enough. More will be needed to survive and prevail in what lies ahead.

Name: Toole Musik Yggdmillennia, Age: 24
An Irish-Romanian doctor who is only in their mid-20s? I like it. Let's go!

Interesting. So the protagonist could have chosen another profession. Could have gone their own way and likely found a good job and lived comfortably. But no, they chose to do this.
Considering our strong bonds and the choice of healing as a sub-profession, it was more a choice to not abandon loved ones than anything else, which has amazing narrative nuance if the Aristovs win the vote. Most of the Aristovs have a somewhat rosy eyed idealization of greener pastures free of this life, but the one they all care for deeply, who could have left and sought out said fantasized greener pastures has chosen to stay. Quite the Magnificent plot hook to build upon.
So there is good along with the bad. But now that the family - whichever it may be - is destined for turbulent and difficult times, the Servant may soon find that the bad may start to outweigh the good.
I don't think so. I think if anything toole will Rally against the threats threatening to tear apart her family.

It depends largely on which family wins. The Shen's for instance, I could see us as a Bastard of the Father, brought into the family because of his control issues and building a place for ourselves out of desire to be accepted.

For the Vines, perhaps a cousin of some kind adopted by the main family after some manner of tragedy.

For Aristov's, I think the Likely answer is the child of a previous marriage, depending on the ages of our siblings.
Never underestimate the doctor.
Why am I suddenly imagining the Servant being requested/instructed to participate in an interrogation of a prisoner?
I don't know, especially since it's questionable how likely that would happen in the main family holdings. That seems like the kind of thing all of the patriarchs would keep two degrees of removal from.

A more likely scenario is one of our siblings comes to us about difficulty sleeping and we prescribe something and attempt to determine any potential underlying psychological causes.
So not just skilled in medicine, but also very good at winning people over, and being charming when need be.

Mhm. I personally like the idea of combat training. It was a popular part of a lot of the alternative plans. Obviously, the Aristovs, as the family with a career mercenary patriarch would be the ideal pick for training up such a skill.

This song is gonna fit the quest quite well isn't it…

What with the fraying family being a key part of the problems no matter the path.

The Vines, have been scarred by tragedy, being driven apart over events from the past.

The Antinovs are divided over their future. Listless, with their members wanting to push in different directions, and clashing over what path the family should persue.

The Shens, meanwhile, find a father that doesn't want to lose control, entering conflict with his heir over fundamentally different visions, as the cracks within the family start to show, complicating things further.

At least, that seems to be the impressions so far. 😅

We are tied, and I need a tiebreaker.

You have ten minutes. if there is not, I'm rolling the dice.

THe vines are the winners.

But do not fret, the rest of the families will be interesting side chareters... And omake fodder.

Well. That's particularly bitter tease of an end. Annoying thing is the last minute tie when you'd stated the closing time. Kind of wish you'd just rolled. Well, no royal balls for me.
