Sengoku Quest - Jesuit Edition

Wait, I thought the Jesuits waved regular Spanish practice and allowed the natives to arm themselves in order to fend off those slavers.

Also because this gives me an excuse, I'm closing the votes. I'll get to counting.
Also yes, but the Jesuits were the ones in charge, and had no real problems with training the natives to shoot people.

Character Sheet
Name: Sebastian Rodrigues
Age: 25
Appearance:

Skills:
Diplomacy: Apprentice (0/800)- You've the general skills to succeed in maintaining a respectful atmosphere during negotiations, but your lack of experience generally causes you to give up far more than you receive whenever facing someone of relative competence
Martial: Professional (0/3200)- You are a man of war, for all that you are also of the cloth. Whilst you tend to disdain from personal attendance to the front line (a wise move in an age where a single shot could end the most brilliant or powerful soldier), your natural ability in the direction of soldiers on a battlefield, as well as in the training of professional military forces has seen you to success and glory against everything from raiding Indians seeking to halt the march of civilization and Christ to the forces of Saxony in the Schmalkaldischer Krieg. You are not the best, not by far, but experience tempers your losses and escalated your victories.
Learning: Journeyman (100/1600)- Compared to many, you are well-educated in the arts and sciences of Christendom. However, such is still a simple hurdle to cross and much remains outside of your domain of knowledge.
Intrigue: Amatuer (0/400) - While assassination is less often used than in the past, you are trained enough in the ways of hidden machinations to avoid the most obvious of pitfalls and traps.
Piety: Journeyman (0/1600)- You are an ordained minister in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church of Rome, but not much more.

I like how Sebastian's pointing at a Cross and giving whoever he's looking at a mean look.

Truly, we'll soon win arguements with rifle in hand.

While I write up the updoot, if you guys are feeling up for something adorable, listen to the Nobis quoque peccatoribus translated in Japanese.

I had no idea names became so adorable until this day.

Updoot will either be up tonight or tomorrow night.

The gentle strands of the shamisen waft through the night. Saito Kato, suppresses a sigh as once again he tries to instruct the new foreigner. This Rodriguez Sebastian...no wait these Westerners did things backwards. Sebastian Rodriguez...he was, different from the other holy men that Kato had met.

He speaks slowly.
"No you must never cross your chopsticks like that, it is bad manners."

"Right...I knew that, sorry." Sebastian says.

Kato nods, the new foreigner's accent wasn't completely terrible, at least one of those words was close to proper Nipponese. He'd have the fellow presentable in...five months give or take? Sure that sounds right.

Sebastian again tries to go through the complicated dining etiquette, and learning to use chopsticks and makes progress, but again crosses them once, although this time the young priest quickly corrects himself. Still, Kato couldn't help but notice the man's hands again.

You could learn a lot from someone's hands. The hands of a labourer were holy different from the hands of a noble, or a monk, or a priest. Kato knows the hands that Sebastian bears, they are the hands of the warrior, calluses for sword work, and thick wrists for weapon use.

"You're looking at my hands again." Sebastian says.

Kato doesn't blush but raises his hand apologetically.
"Sorry, is very different from other priest hands."

Sebastian looks out towards the moon at that.
"I suppose they would be..."

Kato took a breath and decided to ask how a warrior, one still in the prime of his life, was now a holy man far from the fields of his homeland.
"If, willing, why not, warrior still?"

Sebastian starts for a moment and then looks back at Kato.
"I am in a way...but my talents...I would use them to serve God, rather then men."

Kato frowns for a moment, piecing that together. It's not so strange, many sects of monk were pacifists, but then you had the sects, like the Ikko Ikki and they were many things, but non-violent was not one of them. So this Sebastian sought to turn his talents to a holy profession...he could respect that.

"Thank you Rodriguez-san, for answer." he says.

Sebastian nods.
"Would you mind helping me practice your writing more? Your kanji are difficult."

It's clear that the priest is changing the subject. Kato decides to let him, whatever caused a man to shave his head was that man's business. And the foreigner wasn't wrong, Kanji are difficult.

AN: Just trying this out.

Well, I didn't expect to get one so soon. I've no problem making this canonical, though threadmarking it is gonna have to wait until I actually get the next bit out later today.

Frankly, I more expected someone to try out "demonstrable mastery of the haiku" before an omake, but I'm not gonna complain. You've got 100 xp to spend as you wish, gman.

Learning I think. Gotta talk the language to speak to people and I think that falls under learning.

Here is a new land
With great dangers; civil war
My Faith keeps me strong

Militant Buddhists
They work to destroy us all
The Lord lights the way

We have brought Bibles
Books to lead you to the light
These we give freely

I'm not actually Christian, but I tried to write these haikus from the perspective of our Missionary PC.

The first and third haikus have 8 syllables on the second line. That has to be 7 only.

I'm a fan of the more nature oriented haikus (Amid the ashes/ devistating peace secured/ flowers bloom anew), but I'm up for giving 10xp per haiku.

As I recognize the inherent risks in this action, if you put down more than five haikus in one post keep them all in a spoiler.

If anyone manages to make a haiku that is a haiku in both English and Japanese, I'll give plenty more experience than 10.

Sakura blossoms
They bloom so briefly in spring
Like all things, they die

Black Ships come to shore
Strange men, stranger religion
Do they mean us ill?

Iron rod, bullet
No skill; the death of honor
But triumph is all

A country at war
Great lords trample the people
Sengoku Jidai

A pond: still water
But for a single ripple
It was just a fish

Birds sing high and free
But now there is war and blood
Crows feast on the dead

Snow falls. Silent. Still.
The land is washed in whiteness.
It looks like bleached bone.

The age is ending
Samurai threatened to fall
One weapon: a gun

I'm just aiming to get enough XP to boost our Intrigue level.

8 and 3 are too similar in message, so I'll drop you 70 xp

If you shift 8 or 3 around a bit, you'll get the 80.

@Claytonimor, here's a replacement for 8.
