Scraps Sidelined 2: Fire Hazard (A Girl's Frontline Quest)

[] Take the Job.

You closed your eyes and gave your response, "It would be to our advantage if the Sector can provide us further aid for our mission. This can be necessary for us to safely go along with our plans... Provided they don't catch on to what we intend to do."

"I figured as much. You'll be dealing with this, you do know that right?"
Murray replied to you with his arms crossed.

"I'm well aware, Commander. Let me do it," you told him as you opened your eyes as Murray gave his response to Steven.

"We'll take the job. Send us the details on my Terminal link," Murray answered as he rested his hand on his sword, "We'll also need a base of operations if you want our services."

"Of course, of course. We've arranged for Block 45 to be vacant for your purposes. Feel free to make yourselves at home," Steven replied gratefully as Murray held up his Terminal and sent the details to Evie and M200.

"I've sent the details to our associates. Anything else you need to tell us?" Murray asked with a frown.

"If you're interested, we're open to sending you job opportunities by registering you to our Mercenary database. Of course this also means that you'll be available to take on work from other corporate entities of your preference. Though for now, regarding your mission. You'll be accompanied by a detachment of our Peacekeeping forces. They will not get in your way but do try to be cordial with them," Steven advised as he fixed his tie.

"Understood. Vector, let's go," Murray ordered as you turned away to follow right behind him. You could somehow 'feel' the gaze of those Executives eyeing you from behind their screens. You and Murray exited the room and made your way to the elevator.

.....
....
...

"Regarding the job Helgard wants us to do, it's going to be a solo mission given the circumstances. Sorry Vector but I trust you can do this on your own," Murray said as he sat on the Commander's seat in the armored van.

You had your arms crossed watching the screen behind him light up and display to you security images and footage. You were greeted by the sight of armed augmented Mercenaries in urban camo uniforms. They were carrying with them particle rifles, state of the art armaments that Sangvis Ringleaders normally used though commercially made for PMC use.

You were given a blueprint of the complex in the wall you're going to infiltrate.

"I understand but do you have some sort of plan? The contractors have ordered for the precision strike at the heart of the Syndicate managing that area. I alone will not be sufficient," you replied with a confused expression.

Murray smirked and said, "Which is why you won't do the heavy lifting. Evie, bring out the goods."

You turned to see Evie carrying a belt full of canisters before setting them down on the side. M200 looked over with puzzled expression before turning to Murray.

"These are CM-74 Explosive Canisters. Colloquially known as Black Root. They're powerful explosives with a chemical fire that's hard to put out. The potency is double of White Phosphorus used decades ago in the past. These are banned by international treaties..." M200 judged as she crossed her arms, "Commander..."

"Now, now we're not going to use them on people. That's stupid. All Vector has to do is cause some trouble and flush these bastards out," Murray explained as he jerked his thumb at the screen, "Steven Helgard promised us that there will be a portion of the Peacekeeping Forces accompanying us but I feel like they're more like watchdogs meant to keep track of us. So why don't we put them to work?"

"If you mean to flush the enemy out into the waiting arms of the Peacekeeping Force, I can see how this may work... But on what do you propose I use these canisters on?" you asked him with a surprised look.

"According to some footage we have of hacked cameras, the Syndicate in the area belongs to the Broken Shell Gang. They're backed by an unknown affiliate and have been making a streamline connection with the outside and inside of Sector 491. They've brought construction equipment with them as well as a handful of workers from the Yellow Zone. Your mission will be to detonate these canisters on said equipment while downing any armed element they may have," Murray said as he leaned forward, "I don't trust Helgard as far as I can throw him and he most likely expects us to fuck up here. But if we play our cards right, we might just be able to make it out of this."

Evie chimed in and said, "I still don't like the idea of letting Vector head out on her own."

"I can still provide assistance," M200 said in turn.

"A sniper in an enclosed space isn't ideal. Sorry M200 but this mission isn't fit for you. And you, Evie, your concerns are warranted and I'd go there myself but..." Murray glanced at the screen behind him and grimaced, "Those bastards have their attention on me and my little friend here."

Your eyes turned to his sword.

You understood the situation well.

"I can handle it," you replied as you crossed your arms, "I'll return as soon as possible and reap the rewards."

"We're counting on you Vector. Now lets get ready with prep work before we head out to the red carpet," Murray said as he slammed his fist against his palm.

.....
....
...

Murray has given you a few hours to prepare before he called in the City Government for the start of the mission. You had already taken stock of your ammunition and gear alongside some grenades. The warehouse you were provided was out of the main city center, located in the abandoned buildings in Block 45. Munitions factories laid abandoned in the area but it's tightly monitored by City Security.

You finished up setting your workbench before you received a message.

It wasn't from any previously known contacts you had.

"This is Samantha Walker. Vector, was it? Would you be interested in meeting? I am in the area. There's something I'd like to discuss."

The Augmented woman. What could she want?

Calling at this time just before you erexgoing to hit the gangs was suspicious. You figured you'd send a message to your Commander but something told you that there was more to this. Your movement was likely being tracked so if you did do anything, this call might end before it continued.

"I accept," you replied with a frown.

You stepped out of your little warehouse. Upon your reply you were given some coordinates leading to the backside of the warehouse where you eventually found the woman from before. She was waiting for you with that smile of hers as she held a briefcase in her hands.

"Greetings. It's nice to see you here. How are you finding your stay?" Samantha asked.

"This isn't exactly a courtesy call is it? We're preparing to deploy for the mission. This seems awfully suspicious," you told her as you crossed your arms.

"Straight to the point. But you're correct. Mr. Helgard has some extra conditions he wanted to provide," Samantha said as she opened the briefcase handing you a data stick, "We believe that this will cripple the network the criminals are using to coordinate with outsiders. Simply locate their server rooms and initiate the purging process."

"Why not tell this to my commander beforehand?" You asked her.

"We have decided that your Commander may not find it agreeable saddling you with further tasks on top of the one already given. We believe that contacting you on your own decision would yield to a more... Favorable response," Samantha explained as she shut the briefcase.

"He'll still know," you assured her.

"Good luck with that then," Samantha said as she nodded your way. She then turned and left leaving you with the data stick in hand.

.....
....
...

Suffice to say they were right. Murray wasn't happy about the extra conditions but it was just one more thing in any case. You accepted this extra task and you'll do it if it meant currying favor from the City State. In any case you were set loose on the mission area on your own with your Commander tracking your movements.

"The plan is simple, Vector. Start a fire and flush them out. Use the chaos to purge their servers of information and then get out. M200 will be covering you on your exit point."

You were running through the back alleys and empty streets. You were half a kilometer away from your target but you were making good time on foot. You should make this operation quick but something told you it won't be that easy.

"The rest you can play by ear. If things get too hot, we'll step in and let the city deal with the mess."

You ran up an apartment complex, rushing up it's levels until you hit the roof and jumped to the next building over. Hitting the ground, you rolled before you sped up and kept moving. The wind was blowing past you as you rushed by.

Eventually you came upon the target area. It was an abandoned compound near the City walls. Not so abandoned that there was some obvious activity going on as you knelt down to see armed soldiers walking around.

You also detected a few drones flying through the air scanning the area before dipping out of sight. They must be pretty bold to pull this right in the Greenzone. Helgard wanted a knife to the heart of this place and that's exactly what you intend to do.

"Commander, what's the position of the Peacekeeping forces?" You asked as you eyed the hostiles down below, tagging them one by one.

"They're positioned to encircle the area. This'll keep any stragglers from slipping through any gap, making them ripe for capture."

"Understood. Commencing the operation," you replied as you jumped from the side of the roof into the streets.

You were quick to dash behind a ruined car before moving towards the compound. Drones flew over once more but you were out of sight by the time they made their rooftop sweeps. You kept your weapon lowered as you managed to scale a wired fence and enter the compound.

You then walked up to a door just as a guard stepped out of it. You moved immediately and grabbed him by his front, slamming him into a wall before drawing your weapon and putting your foot on his neck.

You entered the door and made sure to clear the area before dragging the body in. Seems like this guy was going out for a smoke break.

"Good job getting in. Head further in and you'll find their weapon's caches. You can stick the Black Roots there."

"What of the server rooms?" You asked as you held a hand up to your ear.

"They're also nearby. My recommendation is to take the armory first and use the chaos as cover to get to the server room. But it's up to you. Wanna gamble?"

You had time. You didn't want to rush yourself now and leave on the run. You can head to the Server Room and initiate the purge before you head on to dismantle this place. You made your move and kept your senses alert. You didn't detect any movements near you so you pressed on.

There were cameras set up down the hall.

"I'm taking the Server rooms. Can you disable these cameras?" You asked over comms.

"I can go into Level 2 and disable them for you," M200 offered for you.

"Good," you replied.

"Done. Go now you have 15 seconds," M200 reported as you moved down the hall with your gun up. You then stepped towards a nearby red door and pushed it open.

Someone was inside, they were quick to pull their gun but your fist came in faster. You knocked the handgun out of their hand before you kicked them across the room. They slammed against the wall and slumped over before you stepped towards the Servers. There's a good number of racks here.

These must hold all of the data they got on this whole operation. Whoever were running these Gangsters had it in mind to keep some dirt on whoever they dealt business with. You walked up to the computers and logged yourself in, brute forcing through the securities.

"Vector, what's your status?" Murray asked you.

"Server Room. I knocked out someone. There's a wealth of information here. I'm taking a look," you decided as you started accessing the server files.

"Not asking for permission? I thought you'd be more straight laced," Murray huffed before he continued, "See what you can figure out. What's got Helgard all eager purging all this info."

"Accessing," you whispered before you started scanning.

Backdoor deals.

Arms smuggling.

Drug smuggling.

Lists of names of officials taking bribes.

Doll Salvage operations.

You frowned. You clicked on the Doll files and found lists of shipments all containing... Dolls. You accessed a file document attached to the whole list and noted that they were marked for reconfiguration.

Apparently a few were delivered here and were located nearby. You noted that some of the deliveries were in transit while some were labeled as terminated. You eyed a city you were just from where you picked up M200.

These people were using the chaos outside the walls as cover for their illicit shipments. You logged out and started the purge but not before grabbing the information you found most pressing to deal with.

There were Dolls being held here. If you blew it all up they'll end up caught in the fires. Dolls like you... You grimaced as you straightened up watching the data get scrubbed by Samantha Walker's virus.

"Talk to me Vector," Murray ordered.

"There's Dolls being held here. Under here. If I blow it all up they'll get caught in the destruction," you reporter as you turned to the door and held your gun, "Sending you the data I managed to scrape."

"Dolls? You mean civilian dolls?" Murray asked with a surprised tone, "These guys are likely connected to M200's capture then."

"It's a backdoor path operated by a crime syndicate. They would have kept logs of their dealings just in case,"
M200 chimed in.

"They were likely intent in receiving you. But this could lead to bigger things. What's my next move Commander?" You asked as you glanced around.

"This just got complicated. Still the job only needs us to flush these assholes out or get them to leave. I can't order the first plan to proceed. Vector, I'm sending M200 on over as support. This is too much for yourself," Murray said as you heard the clatter of M200 moving in the background.

[] Head underground to where the captured Dolls are being held. You should try to free them before you bring this whole place down.
[] TIme to go loud. You'll go with the first plan and decimate the enemy forces. Detonate your charges as soon as you can and don't risk your neck any more than you should.

I'm gonna go with this as well. Set up the diversion first so we have a distraction to help with getting the dolls out.

"I'm planting the charges and making my way down," you reported as you began moving.

"Wait, it's too risky. You'll bring the whole place down on yourself," Murray argued as you kept your gun up as you exited the server room. You made sure to shut the door and spy the active camera.

"I need those cameras down again," you requested.

"I'm en route to your location. I can't go into Level 2 to disable them. Commander, can you do anything on your end?" M200 chimed in as you moved down the hall and pressed your back against the corner.

"What? Oh, sure. Evie, do it," Murray commanded as you checked your ammunition and bombs. It should be enough, right?

You waited before you noticed the cameras go down a moment later. You rushed down the hall taking care not to make too much noise. Following the hall, you ascended to the next level as the cameras went dark there too and you ended up into the Armory.

There were two guards stationed there and your sudden appearance was jarring enough that they ended up unable to act. You punched one in the gut before palming the other across his chin. They both fell easily as you stepped in and dragged their bodies.

The Armory was a section room with a metal door separating each area. It was stocked to the gills with guns, ammunition and explosives. Crates of contraband were also present so you were quick to start on your work.

"I'm at the Armory. Planting my charges. Commander, can you have an approximate of the time activity kicks in here?" You asked as you started taking out the Black Roots and sticking them to the volatile crates and lockers.

"Always act like you're seconds from being caught. You're not planning on retrieving those Dolls are you?" Murray sighed as he shook his head.

"I have to try. There's a percentage chance I can save a few," you replied as you planted the last Black Root.

"I won't stop you but Vector, we don't have the capabilities of backing up your Neuro Cloud. We never did. Whatever happens, if it's too much, I want you to get out of there," Murray said as he was audibly nervous about this.

"Of course Commander. I'm heading underground now. I'll detonate the charges once I've made contact," you reported as you got up and made your way to the door.

No need to be shy now. You just had to make it downwards. So you stepped out the Armory after setting one last booby trap as a present for curious cats to step into.

You're not sure how powerful the Black Roots were but you trusted Evie's sensibilities for it to work as intended. You reached the ground floor and kept your gun up as you watched some guards pass by. Drones still covered the air but you kept low and to the shadows.

You hid behind some crates and spied some people emerging from the nearby passage. Even now they're conducting business as usual. You still had a few Black Roots on you, you should stick some on their vehicles while you were here.

Tagging a few jeeps and trucks, you kept on moving making your way through the compound as you managed to avoid a drone flying overhead. It shined its light down before moving on as you dashed to a lower level made filled with just steel boxes of dozens of dozens of smuggled objects.

"Shit," you cursed under your breath.

"I don't like the sound of that Vector. Talk to me," Murray ordered.

"That's a lot of crates. Bigger ones comparable to what was used on M200. There... There might be too many," you whispered as you reviewed data you just got from before.

"Is a rescue feasible?" Murray asked.

You scanned and weighed your options. With this many Dolls you can't protect them all. Not on your own. Even with M200 providing support you're just two Dolls.

"I don't know," you replied with a grim tone.

"Fine. I'll head on over as well," Murray decided.

"No. You're the Commander. Stay where you are. We can't risk you out here," you told him in a hush tone.

"Clearly you're undermanned. I'm a Fixer before a Commander. I'm better off in the field anyway," Murray replied but you cut him off.

"Ten minutes. Give me ten minutes," you replied as you shut your comms off. You jumped down and moved through the cargo crates.

You could detect which ones had the Dolls. You hid behind some of them and slipped through the cracks as guards wandered by. A few drones flew overhead before you started to feel rain fall from the sky. This should mask your movements from the guards.

You considered this a good omen.

Moving to a storage container you detected movement inside. You stepped forward as you lowered your gun and wrenched it open. You were greeted by the sight of huddled Civilian Dolls all busted up and bearing signs of damage.

They all looked at you with fear.

The rain began to fall harder behind you as you looked back at them. You then held out your hand.

"I'm here to help," you assured them as your eyes glowed a faint light. You did a quick scan of the Dolls in your view. No Griffin tags. No one here was from Griffin...
