Sara's War

On the Intel statement he is correct.
This story is a branching of Sasahara's Greatest Generation. Enterprise was sent to Japan under cover with a mission approved by both high commands to Capture a commander of the Abyssal fleet.

One point I'd like to make: It's one thing to keep HUMANS as prisoners of war as they are a known factor. A drain on resources, highly inventive, prone to escaping given half a chance, and likely to cause damage if they do; but a known factor.

An Abyssal as a P.O.W., a powerful, highly ranked one at that, one that could summon aid in a population centre or on board the Kaga? Would anyone be willing to take that chance without being absolutely sure of their preparations? Restraints for such a being likely could not be cobbled together in the field and be fully trusted. In some ways the only problem with Nagato's actions is that she committed a summary execution - though I do admit it is a major issue.

Enterprise/Yvonne isn't here, and nobody present, Nagato, Penn, Sara, or anyone else, knows of her secret mission. So expecting any group to carry out the orders they don't even know exist is highly suspect and flawed logic. At best, Commander Swanson will bemoan the missed opportunity.

A comparison which does not belong in this thread because it has nothing to do with the author's story. You have beef with how I view something, contact me in a conversation, don't use lazy excuses.

If you don't like your comment being compared to him then deal I made an apt comparison based on what you said in thread. If you what to try to deflect with malarkey on how it isn't on topic on a subject you brought up thats on you.

Nagato's after action report will have the High command give her an Asschewing for her action taken regarding the Hime.
No way around it really considering said command authorized a mission for such.
How severe an Asschewing is up in the air.

No way around it really considering said command authorized a mission for such.
Cite, please? When was Nagato given orders to bring back an Abyssal prisoner?
Because the only orders I remember were:
This is a recovery mission. The job is to get our girls and go home.
This whole mission, from Kwajalein to this most recent battle in Ironbottom Sound/Guadalcanal, was about the summoning of the ships lost there:
The mission had gone well to this point, but there was one last objective on the list. Obviously, someone was operating on the principle that it was best to act and ask forgiveness than to ask permission and be denied. This meant that while subject to discretion, there was heavy pressure for phase 3 of their mission to be carried out. Fourteen American destroyers and six allied cruisers would be immensely valuable to the war effort. Saratoga understood that and she was even curious to try to improve on that but it was going to be much harder than anything they had tried yet. The Abyssals had to know what they were about. They would do anything to stop this operation.

Wow Nagato's the Admirals right hand she has knowledge of how fucked the Intel situation is. Officers in command cannot lose control which she did.
Yvonne's mission was authorized by the high command's on both side and kept secret to avoid a firestorm from unfriendly nations.
A flag position which Nagato had for the retrieval mission must maintain control and keep an eye out for a chance to improve the strategic and tactical situation for the war.
But her regrettable loss of control cost them that that is what she will get chewed out about.

Look. We can do this until the heat-death of the universe, but it's clear neither of us are interested in budging. So I'm just going to drop the subject now, and politely ask you to do the same.

Oh boy.... I kicked over a hornet's nest. The GOOD thing is that people are passionate and getting in good observations and questions here.

The down side is that in allowing Nagato to lose control (And this is a girl who kept her professional demeanor after being sucker punched by a 40,000 ton Aircraft Carrier.) I have sent this story sailing into a firestorm.

What is best for this story. In the end it is a story

I can stay the course or hit the reset button.

On the one hand, doing a reset is a cheat.

On the other, I don't want this story to be lost in the firestorm.

I WILL say that I am proud that my readers DID NOT just let Nagato's actions pass. That says good things.

I need to think...

Uh... that was just one dude, and me TBH, half-coherently digging his heels in on the Nagato issue. The only other two people who commented were more generic 'war crimes are bad'.

I have never liked or understood this mindset of 'reset is cheating'. If you find that you've made a mistake/made Nagato OOC, then the logical course of action is to fix it. It's like writing an essay for your college class: If your professor hands you back your paper with comments and gives you the chance to implement them and re-submit it for a higher grade, why wouldn't you do so?
On the other, I don't want this story to be lost in the firestorm.
The more of the story you spend on this subject, including the fallout, the more this highly-charged environment will remain. The thread and story will no longer be about Sara's War. It'll be about Nagato's actions. Whatever chance there was for treating the tensely-debated, very polarizing IRL subject with decorum is frankly long gone. We've already gotten one person who's using things as an excuse to start a fight...
You're the author. You're only limited by your imagination.

Thank you. I appreciate the feedback! Truth be told this would not be the first time I have reset a story. Although the other time was a game related story I changed after a computer crash. I just want a satisfying story for my readers.

So! *Doc Brown voice*

"Saratoga! You've got to come back with me!"

"Back where?"

"Back... To The Future!"

"I don't get paid enough for this!"

Um why reset? At most Nagato would get is an Asschewing and a reminder to not do it again. There will be other chances to get an Abyssal commander.

Author needs to make a call here. Nagato will still get chewed out and this story will still progress with a different tone than we were developing! You guys have inspired me either to genius or madness! Grab some popcorn and see which in our next installment... Shadows of Things Not Yet Come!

Chapter 39-A: Shadows of Things Not Yet Come
Chapter 39-A: Shadows of Things Not Yet Come

The fighting was getting closer. And in truth, Kisaragi was more frightened now than she had been when she awoke to find herself a captive. She knew what Hime wanted of her. She promised herself she would resist but she wanted the pain to stop and Hime had taken the pain away. She was healed now in body and Kisaragi was grateful for it and at the same time ashamed. She wanted to hate Hime because she knew what the Abyssal Princess wanted from her... of her...

But Hime had made her stronger than before... She fed Kisaragi on her own energy...

And Kisaragi felt herself changing and she loved it! It felt so much better than being weak and in pain and at the very same time it terrified her. One only needed to see her skin, deathly pale now, to know she was becoming one of them. She thought of her friends. She didn't want to hurt them!

Help! I'm losing myself! She cried in her mind.

And then she did something she had never done before. She reached out of her self to other minds. She entered a world of shadows.

Images... Voices...

Some familiar and some not.

Kongo's smiling face.

Akagi propping her pillow.

Mutsuki holding her and crying.

Nagato... Nagato was furious, but not at her.

"May I take it we have a bargain?"

Nagato nodded. "We have an agreement." She said as she very calmly fired her main guns into the Princess at point blank range.

"We agree you can GO TO HELL!"

Hime falling over, quite dead. Kisaragi felt nothing as she watched the Abyssal Princess die.

Other voices now. Strange ones speaking a strange tongue and yet she understood it clearly.

"She shot a prisoner! War is one thing but I know we're not supposed to be shooting prisoners just because we're in a crappy mood! We went through that before! Only last time it was OUR guys getting murdered!"

"You saw that girl. That could just as easily been Anderson or Hughes! I have no idea what they did to her. I don't think I want to know!"

"I'll see them swing."

Nagato was going to be punished. Kisaragi knew it. Knew it was for her. There were rules and Nagato was going to break them.

As the shooting died down, Kisaragi came back to herself. She did not understand what she had seen but she knew it was real. She knew that she couldn't LET it be real!

Hime was a monster. Kisaragi was becoming a monster. Kisaragi would not allow Nagato to become a monster.

And then she heard Nagato and Hime speaking.

"You offer surrender?" Nagato asked flatly. "Why?"

Hime smiled easily. "Well it should be quite obvious that on today, you have what the humans call... 'the winning hand'."

Nagato was unimpressed by Hime's words.

"I mean WHY should I bother to consider it."

"Because...." Kisaragi spoke. Her voice soft but clear. No amount of personal shame could be allowed to stop her.

"Because you aren't a monster."

Nagato turned in surprise to her. "Who...?" Her eyes mixed with recognition and confusion.

"I am Kisaragi." She forced herself to stand. "Destroyer... 4th Torpedo Squadron. I have a prisoner."

Hime smiled. She was not entirely sure what was going on but it seemed her investment was paying off.

Nagato saw Hime smile. It sickened her. She was livid with rage at what she knew must have happened.

"I promised her we would not harm her." Kisaragi lied.

Nagato so wanted to end this piece of diseased garbage! But Kisaragi had given her word of honor. Nagato might be willing to forget her own, but she would not dishonor another. But the rage was still there.

Hime fell to the ground.

"Get this trash out of my sight!" Nagato demanded as she soothed her hand. She suspected she might have broken it but she didn't care.

A life saved.

Nagato would never know which one.

A/N: Are Abyssals capable of precognition? Are Kanmusu? Don't know. I do know that Nagato STILL broke the rules but not in a disastrous way.

I probably just opened a bigger can of worms but I'm satisfied to fish with these. Hopefully so will my readers.

And from this point forward, it will be fresh ground and an Undiscovered Country. (TM Chancellor Gorkon)

Hoo boy. Kanmusu can be converted into Abyssals. Guess we now have a good guess what fate befalls any captured Kanmusu.

So this is the path you chose...

This is a... way out of that.

So you pulled a Neuroi Quest. Only time will tell if this goes over the same way...

Anyone who complains about Nagato knocking out airfield princess, I'd like to point you to:

Neuroi Quest? I'm unfamiliar with that one. And here I thought I was being creative! Oh well... next thing people will tell me they already HAVE fire and wheels....:p

Neuroi Quest? I'm unfamiliar with that one. And here I thought I was being creative!
Here is the first and last thread, it's dead/in hibernation now. Basically what happened was a Neuroi/Korean/Allies* offensive to liberate Fusoan Unit 731 camps on Okinawa and Taiwan full of young girls experimented on to make even more deadlier diseases to be used by plague-manipulator witches. The Okiwana defenders killed the doctors and surrendered, but Taiwan camp was heavily defended, and bought enough time for the doctors to liquidate all but 5 of their test subjects. The entire unit was exterminated, down to the last soldier and witch, whether they surrendered or fought to the last. Upon feeling rather depressed himself, the QM rectoned it, and used it to begin a plotline of reality being torn apart.

People were half and half on it, some seeing it as a a nonsensical turn of events, others enjoying the additional pressure atop the Neuroi civil war, multiple alien empires encroaching on earth, and the past bullshit of humanity.

*it makes sense in context, OK?

Alert: It ought to be on users to deal with the subject maturely than the author apologise for their actions
Both appreciated and apologizing that it was needed.
it ought to be on users to deal with the subject maturely than the author apologise for their actions To the readers in this thread:

Fiction, even derivative works, can be a useful vehicle into exploring uncomfortable situations and actions. At times, it can be distressing and one might object to the reasoning or view the unfolding of events with incredulity. These are valid reactions to have and one cannot be faulted for having them.

That being said, disagreement does not give one licence to be inhospitable to others who do not share the same reactions or views. It also does not give licence to be dismissive and insulting.

@Rajvik_wolfboy has kindly created a thread to explore the disagreements on historical facts and I strongly suggest users use it to air their views civilly instead of in this thread.

Chapter 40-A: Calculations
Chapter 40-A: Calculations

The accommodations could use some redecorating, Hime thought. Of course she did not think her new associates would appreciate her design style.

They referred to her as a prisoner but to her this was just the early stage in a new partnership. She was an asset with knowledge and skills far too valuable to waste even if a few begrudging kanmusu thought otherwise. That was the wonderful thing about humans... Their twisty minds so open to possibilities. Sooner or later one with sufficient authority would think, would see with just a little more vision than his fellows and negotiate a reasonable price for her services.

The humans aboard this ship avoided her with dread, counting on the kanmusu to protect them. As if she wanted to harm them! Not now anyways. Going back was no longer an option. The Triumvirate would never trust her and would quite probably order her elimination as a precaution. Certainly she would have in their place. The only sensible countermeasure was to provide whatever assistance was needed to make sure they died first. So as enjoyable as it might be, terrorizing her new protectors would make for poor strategy. So she would be as docile as an Abyssal Princess could manage for now. Not that she couldn't do with an amusement or two, but she would just have to be careful in picking her fun.

She supposed it might be a useful gesture to offer her hosts assistance in returning their comrade, Kisaragi to her normal, weak state. Soon, someone would ask her to help make their soldiers stronger and she would happily comply in that as well. In a way this defeat might prove a blessing in disguise. Had she succeeded, the Abyssal Nation would have been that much closer to annihilating the human defenders and their allies. She would have remained a minor figure sidelined in the hierarchy. She could see beyond that now. A new empire... her Empire. Shaped by her cunning and will...

It could only be built after the old empires had fallen.

***

Elsewhere, the Triumvirate was puzzled.

"Our sister has been defeated as predicted."

"Yes. But it seems she lives still. This is most unexpected."

"Indeed. We predicted the probability of her termination at 99.7%"

"Risk evaluation?"

"Sister is highly unstable. Chaotic in nature."

"Yes. This is why she was assigned to what we assumed would be a low threat environment."

"She will inevitably betray us."

"I recommend maximum effort to terminate her before she can compromise us."

"Disagree. The danger posed can be averted through security measures. Further, we feel it unwise to direct our forces at a known high priority target which will be well protected. We propose a counter strategy..."

"What do you propose sister?"

"As our sister threatens to unravel the unity of our kind, we will break the unity of the humans against us."

"An excellent strategy. We concur with your plan."

Reluctantly the third Triumvir nodded. "Gather the resources you require then. Break the humans."

"It shall be done sisters. It is in their nature..."

Hmm Abyssal secret squirrel shit incoming.
Though the Question of how has me scratching my head.
On the Hime I would have kept her on the Deck with a standing rotating guard of 3 BB's with orders to shoot to kill If violence is attempted or an a escape attempt is made.
