Bleh. Well, consensus has formed, so I'll try and get a start on this tonight.

Stupid school...

EDIT: Sorry for taking so long to close the vote, but I figured that there was no point in closing it if I wasn't going to be able to start writing until a few days later.

Just caught up. The quest seems interesting enough, even if it falls into the same problem other SAO quests do (managing every step).

Watched.

It's been thirteen minutes and you still haven't solved the puzzle. Oh, if you guys were in top condition mentally and not having to take turns doing watch you're sure that you could have gotten it done in far less time, but it nonetheless seems to support your growing suspicions.

"Are you sure?" Insidious asks. "I mean, not to doubt you or anything, but... this is pretty big if it's true."

You sigh, reaching up to run a hand through your hair. "No Insidious, I'm not sure. I'm not sure at all. But I mean, look at this!" You turn to gesture at where Query and Cascade are working on the puzzle. Tens, if not hundreds of stone pieces float in the air around them, all part of a complex 3D mosaic*. You're pretty sure that you've seen some articles about people doing similar things in reality, using D-pens** and 3D printers to make some pretty ridiculous pieces of art.

Which really only makes you even more suspicious. "There's no way that any normal group of gamers would accept having to spend..." you check your HUD for the time. "Thirteen minutes and counting just to solve a puzzle!"

You sigh. "No. Cardinal has to be adapting the difficulty and challenge on the fly." You look over at Insidious, glad to see that he looks just as disturbed and frustrated by the news. "And that means..."

"That we're probably not going to be able to find any exploits." His face twists, his fists clenching slightly before relaxing. "Damnit! Just... just damnit..." You reach over to rest a hand on his shoulder.

"Hey, we'll get through this, right?"

He smiles. "Yeah."

"Hey, get a room you two!" The voice comes from Query who looks delighted at the chance to make all sorts of jokes. You scramble to take your hand off of Insidious' shoulder even as you take care to avoid blushing. While the facial cue programming in SAO is amazing, brilliant and far ahead of it's time, it can still be mortifying as hell.

"Damnit Query! You're supposed to be working on the puzzle!" You shout back.

Query's response is cut off by Cascade rapping him in the back of the head with the flat of her shortsword.

You smirk. "Or should I talk about your love life? I mean, you guys don't even need to get one! You already have one!"

Query sputters, Cascade blushes, Insidious laughs and you smirk. You kind of miss your old friends, but you're glad that you have new ones.

"Why you-!" Query stands, obviously getting ready to take his revenge somehow, but then the last piece clicks in.

The finished mosaic glows, a tune plays, and the section of floor that Query is on begins descending.

It's pretty slow, and it doesn't seem to be accelerating, which is good. On the other hand, you have no idea what it's lowering into or if you'll be able to access it again. But... if you miss this chance, how else are you going to get down from here?

You don't know.

What do you do?

Friends List:
Insidious (Great Friends): lv. 4
You and Insidious have really bonded in the hours before Kayaba's announcement. Time will only tell if that bond will survive the deathgame of SAO though.
Insidious wants to use a Strength/Health Broadsword/Shield tank build.
Query47 (Good Friends): lv. 3
While your bond with Query47 and Cascade isn't as strong as your bond with Insidious, it still has the potential to ripen into something great - so long as SAO doesn't choke it to death beneath its shadow.
Query47 is dating Cascade IRL, and you're fairly sure that his name is Kubokoi.
Query wants to use a Strength/Stamina daisho (katana & wakizashi) dual wielding Sword Art focused build.
Cascade (Good Friends): lv. 3
While your bond with Query47 and Cascade isn't as strong as your bond with Insidious, it still has the potential to ripen into something great - so long as SAO doesn't choke it to death beneath its shadow.
Cascade is dating Query47 IRL, and you're fairly sure that her name is Midori.
Cascade wants to use an Agility/Stamina Dagger/Martial Arts skirmisher build.
Condor127 (Acquaintances):
You met Condor during a sort of spontaneous low key party in the first week of SAO. He helped work on the soundtrack for SAO, and he feels guilty for the role he played in helping to create the death game.

Guldath Swamps [Outer] (Average): You don't know much about this area, though you do have a general idea of a few paths you can follow. It's mostly inhabited by Skithers, bizarre crosses between a snake and a crocodile, though you feel certain that there's something else that you just haven't seen.
Guldath Swamps [Abandoned Village] (Horrible): An abandoned village out on the border between the inner and outer Guldath Swamps. Ten years ago it was a bustling village, despite its obscure location. Then a dense white fog rolled in, and when it rolled out the place was abandoned. Now everyone avoids the place.

~~~ Footnotes: ~~~
*3D Mosaic: Currently a fringe art style, Mosiacism seems to be poised to rapidly join the mainstream art world along with many of its fellows born from the VR revolution. Mosiacism revolves around using colored transparent materials in conjunction with raised tiles to create elaborate works of art that change depending on what angle you look at them from.
** D-pens: A pen shaped VR prop for the artist centered Aethera VR headset, these use the exterior cameras of the Aethera headset to track the distinctive pattern of the pen-like prop. This allows for artists and other creators to draw three dimensional structures directly within a VR workspace, rotating or twisting the pen to bring up different menus at will.
Weee. So this update is finally out, and we're quickly getting to the actual "meat" of this questline.
Goddamn but this has taken a long time. *shrug* Eh. It'll come when it comes.
Oh! As you guys can see, I'm experimenting with using footnotes to help develop the world outside some. Let me know if works. (And no, none of the stuff in this footnote is going to be important later on. It's just worldbuilding.)
(...and I'm not just saying that to tease you guys; I really do mean it.)
(...really, I do.)
EDIT: Interestingly enough, this chapter came a lot easier when I tried to write it, and the quality seems (to me at least) a lot better than the last update. Any thoughts on that?
The footnotes are a good idea. It's fun to just get little bits of extra fluff about the universe here and there.
As for the quality of the posts, I'm afraid I'm not really much of a judge for these things :oops: I've enjoyed reading them either way.
Hey, @einargs , I just noticed, but is there an error in the dates for a bunch of the last story posts and threadmarks? At some point the day changed from the 8th to the 7th, unless I'm reading wrong.
The section he's on is how large?
Large enough for about eight people to sit comfortably.
That's what I thought, so it's good to get confirmation.
Good to know :)
That... would be an error, yes. Dammit.
If so that's not a good puzzle for an MMO.
I remember reading about similar stuff, though user friendliness leaves much to be desired.
Love it. More stuff to discuss aside from the immediate crisis.
So! Consensus has formed! I'll try to get this written up on the drive down from Michigan, but no promises - I got stuck with a bunch of homework over Labor Day weekend, and I haven't really had a chance to do any of it so now I have to do it in the bloody car. :( So yeah.
Precisely. Looking back over I realize that I forgot to include this, which is really bad writing ( :( ), but the point that spring rain is making is that Cardinal must be capable of adapting the game structure on the fly to fit the changed dynamics of a world where everyone spends 100% of their time online. A situation like SAO simply doesn't work in an MMO designed to simply be part of a life instead of all of it... which is why that MMO can change, grow and learn.
:evil:
I remember reading about similar stuff, though user friendliness leaves much to be desired.
Pretty much why I wrote it up. I see the technology of the SAO world as mostly being like ours, just with a lot more VR everywhere.
Love it. More stuff to discuss aside from the immediate crisis.
Thinking about it, that's pretty much what I was aiming for: something to foster greater discussion and engagement than just the usual update-to-update challenges.
Actually, that gives me an idea... *furious scribbling*
I'll tag on my vote to the consensus anyway. Still very much enjoying following this quest. ^_^
I'd say that they ought to buy a bunch of sturdy rope for these kinds of situations. Except Cardinal might then take that into account.
We did, it let us avoid one nasty outcome already.
I'm more concerned about players not equipped with a shitload of rope and 10ft poles having to deal with Adapted Cardinal.
Well, in MY opinion, if you don't bring AT LEAST ten pounds of chalk I'm not sure you can really be called prepared anyway and deserve whatever comes to you.
So the next update's done, but I'm wondering if I can get a quick second opinion on it. I ended up having to re-write it - you guys rolled horribly, and it just wasn't going to work out right - and I want to make sure that it... well. Flows well. So yeah.
