What decorations are (glowing ominously) on the stone platform?
How fast is the platform rising compared to ground level and is there visible motion in the water?
...
That is all I can think of for right now.

No ominous glowing decorations, though in your adrenaline fed awareness you notice several faded carvings spiraling away from the center of the cylinder. The water is churning unnaturally, as if the green sludge practically choking the water is being displaced by something rising upwards.

Better to prepare for something big....... though some other critical moment plans might also be good

...The reward better be worth it :p
Cool, since people seem to like it I'll fill it in. Does anybody have any modifications or additions to suggest?
Nothing really for the part about rescuing Insidious, but maybe once we get him / are hauling him up:
We should crouch at a position in between the edge and the center of the platform, so we're less likely to be thrown off by the boss entry shockwave or if the stone platform suddenly starts to shift (those carvings spiralling from the centre are pretty suspicious)
And maybe being prepared to use sword skill 'stab' on the platform as a last resort if it looks like we're about to be thrown off the platform.

Hmm... I waaas going to wait for a little longer, but it's pretty obvious by now that @TurtleDucks wins.

-[X] Have the rope at the ready, with one end tied around your waist. We can toss it to him if the platform rises too high. If he falls in to the water we can have Query or Cascade hold one end while we go down to grab him and they can then haul us back up. Whoever isn't on rope duty should be watching our backs for anything that spawns on the platform.
A consensus has formed!

I'll get started writing as soon as I finish eating this delicious, delicious pizza.

Mmm... pizza...

EDIT: *looks down at dice* Hmm... interesting...

Well, there was an Insidious death flag on at the start...on the other hand he's likely to listen to us, the question is if he has time to react.

A Note on Quest Tone and Character Death
I don't think the qm is cruel enough to kill us right out of the gate. Certainly We, Insidious, or both of us could get severely injured if things go poorly, but I don't think anybody is going to get killed this update.
Hm.

I don't think you realize just how sadistic I'm willing to be. When I started this quest, I promised myself that I was going to make it as horrible as possible. This quest is inspired by SAO Abridged and Fucking Tinkers, and while it's taking a lot of the characterization for the main cast from SAO Abridged, it's taking an equal amount from Fucking Tinkers - just not for characterization. In canon SAO, things never really get too hopeless; the clearers are making regular progress, big wipes are uncommon, and PvP is considered a pretty big deal. In Fucking Tinkers?

...Well. If you haven't read it, go do that. If you have, then you know what I'm talking about. Of course, I'm not saying that this quest is going to get as bad as Fucking Tinkers; that would be ridiculous. But it is going to get pretty bad.

One of the reasons I started this quest was that I wanted to tell a story about a bunch of fucked up people living in a fucked up, fake world and trying to pretend that everything is still fine. I wanted to explore the potential social consequences that come from living in a game world, and the trials and tribulations that come from trying to re-integrate into normal society afterwards. That initial desire has been toned down some - some of my original thoughts just didn't work out right, and entertaining you guys is my main goal - but it is undeniably still present.

This quest is constantly in danger of veering of into some pretty dark territory, and that's intentional in a lot of ways. Even a small mistake caused by not fully thinking something through or just not being careful enough can get someone killed, and that's intentional. That's how even canon SAO worked; as long as you were cautious and paranoid, you probably wouldn't die. But if you got lazy or fucked up... well. Then all bets were off.

Here, let me give you an example:

Earlier, there was a point when someone mentioned splitting the party to do the Swamp Tome Quest.

My immediate reaction to this was that I should kill off Cascade and Query if you guys asked them to go do the quest on their own. I toyed with the idea for a bit, plotted everything out, and then decided that yeah, I'd do that if you guys decided to split. I'm not sure if I actually would have gone through with it, but it was a possibility. I suspect that I probably would have just flipped a coin in the end.

That said... you guys have a fairly solid plan, and I'm not planning on having anyone die next update. That could change of course, but it's not currently planned.

So yay?

Well, I'd been thinking about attempting an SAO quest before I found this, and I'm quite glad I didn't. Your writing and system is a lot better and thought out than my idle musings, and the setup seems a lot more solid than mine would have been.

Here's to hoping we don't lose a party member this early on :p

Ropes and Temples: (8/11/22, 11:25)

[X] Call Insidious back. If there is a boss spawning up here we need everyone working together to defeat it. It would also be extremely dangerous for him to be stuck on the lower platform with no one to assist him should he fall in the water or mobs spawn. The party has to stay together.

Your judgement comes in a split second; the group must stay together. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and you suspect you will need that edge no matter the path you choose. Once that decision is made, the rest comes quickly. The calculation is instinctive, your thoughts jumping like lightning.

"Insidious!", you call; better to risk one person than three. He turns, stumbling slightly as he does so. There is a look of fear in his eyes, one that seems far disportionate to the situation. Still, you motion for him to come back, hoping that he will listen.

He does, though he seems obviously reluctant. You bring up your inventory, plucking a coil of rope from it and tying it around your waist. The pillar is nearly two meters above the wooden platform now, and you can see pieces of it crumbling. You throw the weighted end of the climbing rope to Insidious.

He hesitates, clearly nervous about the expanding ring of unstable wood surrounding the pillar.

Time seems to slow. Insidious starts moving forwards. The stilts buckle. Insidious jumps. The first section hits the swamp.

...Insidious grabs the rope.

You let out a sigh of relief that is cut short by the rope snapping taunt. You stumble; you haven't braced yourself.

The edge approaches. You start to panic. Insidious' eyes widen. You try to brace yourself, but you can't get your feet into position. The knot begins to slip. You close your eyes...

...and Cascade grabs your armor, buying time for Query to take over the load of the rope. You're too shocked to let out a sigh of relief, but the sentiment is there.

You shake Cascade's hand off, moving forwards to help drag Insidious up. The rope burns in your hands, and the view doesn't help; the rise of the tower doesn't seem to be slowing down.

No, if anything it's just speeding up. By the time you've pulled Insidious up, the rest of the structure has begun to emerge from the depths of the swamp. From the little you can see right now it looks like a temple; there's a big sort of dome shape off to one side, and a bunch of smaller spires surrounding it.

You grunt, your muscles burning with phantom pain as you finally haul Insidious up.

But... his eyes are closed, and he's muttering something.

"I'm on the ground, I'm on the ground, I'm on the ground..."

Just as you're beginning to get an inkling of what's going on, a flash of blue light erupts from the surface below you. Four blue runes of light have suddenly lit up, and your stomach sinks at the sight.

What do you do?

Friends List:
Insidious (Great Friends): lv. 4
You and Insidious have really bonded in the hours before Kayaba's announcement. Time will only tell if that bond will survive the deathgame of SAO though.
Insidious wants to use a Strength/Health Broadsword/Shield tank build.
Query47 (Good Friends): lv. 3
While your bond with Query47 and Cascade isn't as strong as your bond with Insidious, it still has the potential to ripen into something great - so long as SAO doesn't choke it to death beneath its shadow.
Query47 is dating Cascade IRL, and you're fairly sure that his name is Kubokoi.
Query wants to use a Strength/Stamina daisho (katana & wakizashi) dual wielding Sword Art focused build.
Cascade (Good Friends): lv. 3
While your bond with Query47 and Cascade isn't as strong as your bond with Insidious, it still has the potential to ripen into something great - so long as SAO doesn't choke it to death beneath its shadow.
Cascade is dating Query47 IRL, and you're fairly sure that her name is Midori.
Cascade wants to use an Agility/Stamina Dagger/Martial Arts skirmisher build.
Condor127 (Acquaintances):
You met Condor during a sort of spontaneous low key party in the first week of SAO. He helped work on the soundtrack for SAO, and he feels guilty for the role he played in helping to create the death game.

Guldath Swamps [Outer] (Average): You don't know much about this area, though you do have a general idea of a few paths you can follow. It's mostly inhabited by Skithers, bizarre crosses between a snake and a crocodile, though you feel certain that there's something else that you just haven't seen.
Guldath Swamps [Abandoned Village] (Horrible): An abandoned village out on the border between the inner and outer Guldath Swamps. Ten years ago it was a bustling village, despite its obscure location. Then a dense white fog rolled in, and when it rolled out the place was abandoned. Now everyone avoids the place.

~~~ Notes: ~~~
So... uh. This chapter didn't want to get written :(
But yeah. I'm really, really sorry for taking this long to put this out, but between flying back home from sweden and starting school again, I just haven't really been able to sit down and power through my writer's block.
But I've finally gotten that chance!
...Which brings me to my other point. I really, really don't like this chapter. I really, really don't like it. But I really do need to get some kind of progress made here, and so... yeah. Sorry.
And the quality problems suck all the more for the fact that I'm currently introducing two fairly important things; the beginning of Insidious' character development, and the new area terrain.
A cookie to whoever can guess what's going on with Insidious or what I've based the swamp temple on.
Also, I'm kind of surprised that there haven't really been any reactions to my big post on character death and the tone of the quest. When I wrote that out I really expected a bunch of people to comment on it, but so far there's just been silence. Any reason for that?
A fear of heights or flying is my best guess for Insidious.
Not too sure what to do but circle the wagons? Question is if we need to go in or out, or just move off the glowing platform. Hard to say.
Well, I haven't been hanging about the thread all that much for various reasons. Though, it's a little "okay good to know" after reading it. Hard to say much about it, it is what it is.
Well, that's certainly something for all of us to keep in the back of our minds in the future. Making one, dumb, stupid mistake can have big consequences.
As a matter of fact I'm seeing the results of one possible mistake right now...
[X] Call Insidious back. If there is a boss spawning up here we need everyone working together to defeat it. It would also be extremely dangerous for him to be stuck on the lower platform with no one to assist him should he fall in the water or mobs spawn. The party has to stay together.
It seems that particular line in my vote may have inspired your planting the seeds for our future trauma.
The Party Must Stay Together (Nucleus): When the time came, you chose to put your faith in shared strength. It's just the beginning, but in time it might blossom into something more.
Oh, hey, small very consequential change I didn't notice because I got out of the habit of checking the character sheet...oops.
So @einargs can we take it to mean that (nucleus) means it's not a trauma yet, but if the right (er... wrong) thing happens Chiyoko will be seriously traumatized?
Hmm, tricky one, but a giant temple, unreachable, then glowing runes.
Teleporter?
[X] Four runes, four of you. Everyone grab hold of the rope with one hand and their weapon with the other, then stand on the runes each.
Either way, it seems to me they won't be pulling an autokill if you do the predictable actions(nobody likes a boss who just flash kills everyone on the first floor), but what Insidious did was basically running off the map during the boss entry animation, and thus, he was vulnerable to death by destructible terrain.
