Saerang (A Song of Ice and Fire/The Silmarillion)

Alrighty! Made an account so as to continue following you and your story, Az! This is still one of the best Silm and ASoIaF fics that I've ever read and I'm glad to see it somewhere else. Even though I've long since bookmarked Saerang over on ao3. :D

I will say. The arrival of the Noldor (or would that be Ñoldor since they're still using Quenya among one another) is still one of the best and most chilling pieces that I've ever had the pleasure of reading in any fic. The GC never stood a chance the poor bastards.

Hey, I remember you from AH. I really appreciated your posts in the thread!

Thank you! It's one of the bits of Saerang I most enjoyed (and wrestled with) writing. I hope that what I'm working on (tentatively - there's some things that went wrong in real life recently, and it's been hard getting into the mood for writing) is similarly appreciated.
Read and loved this on AH.com, and will gladly follow it as it continues on here (and SB)!
Thank you very much! I am very glad you decided to follow me here.

I'm glad! AH's whole atmosphere (especially in the fandom section) isn't really conducive to my being very active but I thoroughly enjoyed your fic. So much so that I remember absolutely having to comment on the effectiveness of your writing.

No worries! Take as much time as you need. Lord knows that I more than understand how rl can take over and interrupt the creative process. I don't doubt that whatever you give us will be both very impressive and appreciated.

Yep. Not sure if this goes into off-topic or stuff about other boards but AH's mods, aside from just plain being bad at their jobs, also look down on the fanfic section of the board, treating it as a ghetto. (I suppose it's not highbrow and elevated like genocide, colonial apologia and history timelines written by people who don't actually know shit about history)

Of course, this means that the people who are supposed to police a very active forum don't actually give a shit about it and treat people posting in it with contempt, affecting the already low quality of moderation. Superficialities like tone take precedence over quality, or actually figuring out what's going on. You can say the dumbest, most heinous shit but so long as you're superficially polite about it, you're given a pass.

Do you want a hint as to what the next chapter is, or should I leave that unknown?

Yeah. That's something that I've unfortunately noticed. It's the main reason I generally lurk rather than get involved in things.

Oooh. You could give us a hint if you want. I certainly would not be opposed to it.

With a pneumatic whirr, the great doors began to open. On them, they bore many engravings, fashioned in a series of circles, expanding from the center outwards. At the innermost one were wrought the Stars and Two Trees in gold and silver, while the outermost was set with the image of the Ekkaia, the Outer Ocean that circled the edge of Arda. Between them were many more images. Folk ploughing their fields and hunters at the chase, miners delving for precious stones and craftsmen working their trade in forges of gold-wrought flame. Then in the deeper circle, amidst kinsmen hunting in a far-off land, a lone, golden-haired prince dreamt of a kingdom. Following the Lord of Waters, he saw a place by the river Narog, deep beneath the earth, and hewed therein a city. By his side were arranged many more figures - eldar and naugrim alike, working side by side. Lastly at the circle's far-end, he sat enthroned and crowned. It was nothing less than the tale of Nargothrond's foundation - and a depiction of its prosperity.

The Deep Gate, it was called, and led onto the throne chamber. From it emerged King Finrod, flanked by the Ehtërim Mahalma, their armor concealed beneath rich purple robes, and bearing green plumes upon their gilded helms. The same mechanisms that had opened the gate now blew rose petals across the chamber, as if by a wind from the West. They scattered across and down onto the polished floors as the lanterns that lit above the King and his entourage flickered brighter.

"Ever-lasting joy to thee! Ever-lasting joy to Nargothrond and its people!"
Hello there! We are waiting for continuation (me and translator).
Thank you! I'm trying to work for you guys reading in Russian as well.

Ohh. Man, now that's going to be interesting. I love the direction you've decided to take when it comes to the construction of the city so far. It's very Noldor.

Personally, I'm most looking forward to seeing the ambitions of the Golden Company bear fruit, or not. Generally, I do hope that they establish a kingdom of some kind, just to see the cultural clash and slow evolution of the Westerosi on Arda.

That would be pretty interesting. Sadly it'll be an uphill battle given that Beleriand is nearing what might be the climax of the war. Though it'd be equally interesting to see how the Golden Company might fare against the various tribes of Men that are floating around in Beleriand right now. Not militarily, of course. Rather the sort of cultural and societal differences that would be starkly apparent between them. Especially since certain groups have attached themselves firmly to the elves and picked up mannerisms and cultural mores that will clash with the Westerosi's own. The Golden Company's alliance with Sauron is going to cause problems there too. Especially since they've messed with the Fëanoreans and at this point in time the Fëanoreans haven't yet reached the height of their fall from grace.

I wonder if what's happened to Tyelpë and the resultant clash with the GC might actually butterfly away Celegorm and Curufin's meddling in Nargothrond. Finrod may or may not still be doomed due to his oath to Barahir. But if Celegorm, and most importantly Curufin's, actions in Nargothrond can be prevented then Nargothrond might not be as unstable near the end. Could Finduilas end up as the ruling lady of Nargothrond in such a situation? That'd be interesting and likely depends on what happens during Beren's quest, whether or not C+C keep away from political shenanigans in their cousin's court, as well as Orodreth's ultimate fate.

Thank you!

Now, I don't remember any particular fanfic descriptions of Nargothrond that stuck in my mind, and obviously Tolkien never described it in depth. But I've tried to go for something that is not only very grandiose but also to some extent technological. The Ñoldor are of course expert craftsmen, skilled metalworkers and delight in making impressive things. Thus, there are some mechanisms and automata, much like how you might see some in the most opulent courts of Antiquity.

Love the story, and how it simultaneously feels like both the Silmarillion and ASoIaF.

Though if I had one complaint, it'd be that the verbosity and descriptiveness from both compounded is a bit too much. The Silmarillion's grandoise descriptions and storytelling likes to move on. It works because of how there's only a few lines devoted to describing one particular thing before the story continues. ASoIaF's descriptiveness, on the other hand, likes to linger and immerse. Together, it's sort of like... a cake that's too sweet. Too much fondant, perhaps.

Feels like that would be contingent on the Golden Company actually surviving the next few hours and that feels highly unlikely given how vengeful the C Twins are bound to be. And even if they do make it out alive, it's just a few decades before Earendil.

Honestly though I feel like this is gonna be a net positive in the long run, regardless of if the Golden Company survives and if. It's just a few years before the Easterlings show up, and the more wary the Eldar are of them the less likely the Nirnaeth Arnoeniad actually happens. Of course, that could also butterfly away the War of Wrath and that would be A Bad Thing in the long, long run.

Interesting.

I do have a tendency to get excited and linger on with the descriptions sometimes. This is part due to my inspirations, the fact that I enjoy a lot of the stuff I am describing (fancy clothes, ahem) as well as because a lot of fanfic white rooms, thus I want to avert that tendency.

Oooh. That's a good point. I forgot about the Easterling situation. It would be very sad if this whole mess cost us Maedhros' friendship/alliance with Bór and his tribe. But it would be a very good thing if the Noldor as a whole are more wary of random groups of Men arriving out of nowhere as a result of the Westerosis arrival. If we can prevent (or at least mitigate) Ulfang's betrayal then that would go a long way. But that's still a few years down the line.

I don't remember what year we're in right now. Has Morgoth attempted to sway the Marachians and thus offended Amlach into siding with the Elves and specifically the Fëanorians already?
