Chapter 20

Chapter 20

Missy forces herself to roll over to try and stand up, only for her jade talisman to fall to the floor with a tink. As she's trying to breathe, Dakala leans crawls over and picks up the talisman, before placing it in Missy's hand.

"Here, don't lose this."

Missy groans with relief as the pressure abates, "How are you even moving around?"

Dakala lays down on her back as she says, "Channelling qi to my body. Why did you do it?"

"Do what?"

"Eat the seed."

Missy forces herself into a sitting position and looks at the silks she's wearing, "Dakala, this city is fucked up, and so are the people that live here. The tourists never see it, but the gangs control pretty much everything in the city, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't control the commercial district too. Unemployment is officially around 30%, I'd say closer to 40% if you include mothers with children. As Wards we're only allowed to patrol along the Boardwalk, central Downtown, and the south western residential district. Only Boston and Chicago have similar comparable reductions in patrol area, and ours is the smallest if you go by population density."

Dakala nods thoughtfully, "You know, you don't sound like a 12 year old."

Missy nods, "I spend as much time at the PRT as I can, and sign up for every course the Wards offer." She barks a humourless laugh, "It's funny, the courses you can take are based on how long you've been a Ward, while seniority is based on age. How fucked up is that?"

"I don't know, but it bothers you so it matters. You still haven't answered the question though. Why did you eat the seed?"

"Because now nobody can stop me coming here and learning to fight. My parents can't decide that the hobby that one of them set up isn't suitable anymore. The PR-T can't tell me that I'm too young to learn to fight, and I can't carry any weapons because it would send the wrong image. The youth guard can't say that I should be dreaming of unicorns and rainbows, as if any girl in this hellhole actually does that. I sewed up my own fucking chest after Hookwolf grazed me with his arm as he was escaping from a warehouse on East Side. That was before they restricted our patrol areas again."

Missy pushes herself into a seated position, "God it's nice to be able to talk about this shit and not have to watch my mouth because 'children shouldn't speak like that'."

Dakala carefully doesn't let her own opinions about what girls Missy's age should be like show as she says, "I'm glad you feel comfortable here. I think I heard the Empress saying that it's not age that makes adults, it's experiences. Mom used to say that I'd be a woman when I started to bleed."

Missy nods, "I started a couple of months ago."

Dakala nods, "You should ask the Empress for some wraps, as they clean themselves. Not so quickly that you don't want to change, but quickly enough that by the time the third one's full, the first one is clean again."

Missy twists around as Dakala looks up and the Empress says, "Once you start on your nascent soul you'll be able to control that aspect of being a woman. Oh, and Missy. Don't forget that there's more to being a functional member of society than just being an adult. Knowledge and skills are also vitally important, and the education system here is well equipped to teach you how to learn if you pay attention. It's one of the things I hope will persist as cultivation becomes more common, as it should allow mortals easier access to the paths to heaven."

Missy opens her mouth to object when her brain catches up with what the Empress said, "But school's bor… wait, really?"

The Empress nods, "It's why Sects usually only took those from wealthy backgrounds where I came from. Commoners weren't typically taught more than enough letters to be literate, and enough numbers to trade. Everything else was passed down by word of mouth from parent to child, or master to apprentice. Yet following the Dao requires an inquisitive mind, the ability to learn, and the determination to see it through. You've proven you have the last one, and the other two are things that can be cultivated. Now, have you recovered enough to visit the van at the base of the hill and get your costume?"

Missy nods, "I think so, I can sit up anyway."

The Empress nods, "I will take you to get changed. Daily cultivation starts at sunset. Barring other calls on your time by the mortal authorities, martial practice will take place for two bells after first light, and tea preparation will begin at fifth bell. Any questions?"

"Why aren't my powers working?"

The Empress smiles, "Your comprehension of space is as comprehensive as your comprehension of your own arm. If you were immortal already, I would urge you to take it as your Dao, as your power would give you an advantage on comprehending it. But it would take you longer than you could live to comprehend enough of the Dao of Space to reach immortality."

"Why?"

The Empress walks over to a chest and opens it, "If you could see it, a mortal soul looks about the same size as three grains of rice together. Into that you need to fit the initial understanding of your DAO. I'm sure that Dakala can tell you how hard it is to fit a Dao that is large for a mortal. Space is much much larger than Life."

"What's your Dao then?"

The Empress pulls out some clothes, "Hmm, these used to be Hanying's when she was about your size. My Dao, I've already told you my Dao. I am Empress Stellar. Empress was my position, Stellar is my Dao."

═══════ ೋღ ֍ ღೋ ═══════

As Missy and the Empress fly out down towards the PRT van, the Empress puts her hand on Missy's shoulder, "Before I let you go, there are two things you need to remember. The first is that your far stronger and more durable than a mortal right now, so imagine that things are made out of rice paper while you're handling them. The second is that there isn't a single part of the city that can't see the sword."

Missy looks back as plain clothed PRT agents get out of a van with a pizza printed on the side, "Why would that be important?"

The Empress shakes her head slightly, "I forget how sheltered this world is. As long as you are outside you can always see the hilt of the sword and reach the sword. From there you can create a lens to observe any part of the city that you want to reach."

One of the agents calls up, "Miss Byron?"

Missy looks down, "One mo, I want a half and half meat feast and supreme, no ham. I'm just checking what the rest of the order is."

"I'm sorry, but we're out of ground beef."

Missy sighs, "Fine, make it a chicken supreme and add some pineapple too"*

The Empress chuckles, "Pedro, can you tell Patrick that Chónghuò Xīnshēng was the first name I chose for myself."

Missy looks confused when the agent freezes, "Empress, what did you do?"

"Patrick was asking his boss whether I should be here or not because it doesn't match up with the official paperwork. I believe he was looking at a copy of the company registration I signed on Monday. I just gave him the name I chose when I survived being turned into a cauldron. I was still in my second century of life at that point, might have been third. I was certainly younger than five centuries."

"What!?"

"The cultivation method I was given was deliberately slow and highly unbalanced so that I would be perfect for dual cultivation with males. If you don't understand the implications now, you will in a few years time."

Missy grimaces, "I hate it when adults say that."

The Empress shrugs, "There are certain aspects of development that can only be understood once your brain has matured more and your hormonal development has finished. If I say The Farm it might make more sense to you."

Missy blanches and then looks sick, "That happened to you?"

The Empress nods, "It was a gilded cage, and I couldn't see the bars. But yes."

As Pedro seems to be recovering his wits Missy swallows hard before asking, "What was that about a lens?"

The Empress gestures towards the sword, and as Missy looks the space in front of her face warps in two places, the first around two feet across, and the second only as wide as her face. Through the warping she can see concrete mounting that they've placed on top of the hilt, along with the flashing red light on top of it.

Missy looks between the warping and the Empress, "How? Why?"

"I have a high comprehension of both Time and Space as you cannot understand black holes without them. I expect that my granddaughter's comprehension is far higher than my own, as her Dao is Space. As to why. Most formation masters end up coming up with something similar for scouting and investigation purposes. It's far quicker than setting up a telescope for scouting and spying. Before you ask, Formations is about knowing, while Dao is about understanding, sort of. I think Dakala told her father it's that aha moment when you get something complicated. Suffice to say that until you've experienced it, language is insufficient. However after you've experienced it, the language of Heaven is well suited to discussing it. I believe that your escort is ready for you now, they're just gathering information while I'm willing to talk. They just don't realize that none of you are at a level where Sect secrets are even on the horizon.

"Dakala might get to the stage where secrets start becoming a thing amongst mortal sects by the end of the year when she finishes her foundation, but it's more likely that she'll take a few years to reach Core Formation. Depends on how fast her Dao grows."

When the Empress doesn't continue, Pedro coughs, "We have your change of clothes in the back. We'll drive you to the site as you change."

Missy looks up at the sword speculatively, "I could just make my own way there, save you having to rotate out this van."

The Empress chuckles, "I could also buy a couple of Pizzas before I fly down to the work crew that are working down the road."

Patrick gives a sour look, "Please don't, I'm not good at making pizza."

The Empress chuckles, "But it would give you a good excuse to have this van in this parking spot. Especially given that Missy is likely to be a frequent visitor. Oh, and I'm going to be making a path up to the pagoda as there are some other members of the sect that will want to visit."

Patrick's shoulder's slump minutely as Missy hops off the spear and opens the door to a concealed changing room in the back of the van that sits under the counter. As she's changing Patrick touches his ear before climbing in and opening the hatch on the side of the van.

"What do you want?"

═══════ ೋღ ֍ ღೋ ═══════

The Empress floats down over the road crew that are in the process of rebuilding one lane of Route 17 from the other side of blockage to Brockton Bay. As the foreman looks up she lifts the pizzas, "Hey! I just thought I should let you know that there's a Pizza Van in the parking area towards Brockton Bay. Might save your guys a drive on their lunch break."

The foreman scowls, "What!?"

The Empress rolls her eyes in an exaggerated manner as she brings her spear down beside him, "Hop on and I'll show you. Don't worry, I'll go slow and stay low."

The foreman looks at the spear skeptically, while one of the other men walks over, "Hey Sean, I'm about to go on break anyway. Why don't I have a look first?"

Sean scowls at the man as he climbs onto the blade of the spear. As the Empress takes off he shouts, "Don't take too long Lewis!"

As they fly back the 400 yards, and round a bend, to the parking area, Lewis says, "Don't worry about Sean, he's afraid of heights." A moment later he whistles, "This would have been useful a couple of months ago when they were doing the surveys."

The Empress shrugs, "Most of the Pelham family can fly, and don't have secret identities."

Lewis shrugs, "There's probably union rules about hiring them or something."

As the van comes into view, he adds, "Well, you're right. Pity it's useless to us due to rubble. OSHA would fine us into oblivion if we scrambled over 100 yards of rubble just to get lunch."

The Empress smiles and turns back to the rubble before hopping down at the side of the road. With a tap of her foot a path a couple of yards wide breaks down into pebbles, a second tap sees them compacted into a footpath that cuts parallel to the road 10 feet up the side of the hill.

Turning back to the spear she lowers it to the ground before returning it to her ring, "Well, this is where I leave you as I need to get these back to the pagoda."

Coil already did; he kidnapped Dinah and got most of his base and himself taken out.
He survived by having his safe timeline hightail it out of the city in his car.
In one timeline he hits the on ramp for the freeway and flicks the switch for the illegally fitted police flashers, in the other he's approaching his base when the commander says, "I'm sorry sir, Mr Pitter is in the secure area of the base, it will take us a few…"

As the timeline ends Coil checks his rearview mirror as lightning falls over his base.

So the Mandate punishes the person actively violating it (in this case, Mr Pitter?), but ignores the mastermind (Coil)?
The mandate only covers the city at the moment. So once he passed the city limits he was safe.

This is from chapter 3.
As she speaks, her voice is carried over the entire city of Brockton Bay, "I am the Stellar Empress, once ruler of the 888 heavens and creator of the Empyrean Realm. I am so far above the mortal world that you cannot see the truth in front of your eyes. Next time the mortal government seeks to judge my actions, I will enforce the mandate of heaven on this city. The third time I will enforce it on the country, and the fourth I will enforce it on the world. If you wish to know the mandate of heaven, say 'Stellar Empress, I wish to know the mandate of heaven' and I will send it to you. My sword will remain as a reminder that I am a force without equal in this world. If you bring force against me, I will return it 100 fold. The helicopter is an object lesson in the fact I can apply that force."

I'd be shocked if we don't eventually get some random cop or other government official who sees official proof about the tribulation lightning killing kidnappers and decides to force the issue because of personal reasons.

Like they joined the police after their sister was kidnapped and have always been hoping to find her or see her again even as the years have worn away that hope.... then they come across an official decree or something similar forbidding cops from trying to arrest Empress and look into it. They find proof that what she said was true and all the evidence backs it up, and so they decide on their own to head out and find her specifically so they can try and arrest her multiple times in order to get the whole world covered - as they feel that it's worth whatever might fall on their heads to prevent anyone else from ever having to go through what they did.

I am sort of hoping that the PRT begins to draw Piggot's watch in Brockton Bay into a skeleton crew because all three gangs have been greatly reduced. Only to have waste hit the fan hard and Taylor inadvertently strengthen her grip on the city because her Sect saves the city.

I am also wondering just butt-hurt over the situation with Kayden at the bank.

Very interesting. I love seeing OP cultivators pull up in worlds like this. Never seen a Taylor one before
What are some of the other examples of this?

Shaking her head at the memories, Dakala pushes open the door and squeezes her way through the crowded shop. As soon as she reaches the carpet, the crowd clears and she makes her way to a small roped off area. As she gets to the counter, she spots Vista turning around with a disappointed look on her face.
"Hey Vista."
Vista looks up, "Hi, I tried to get a ticket for today."
Dakala gives her a wry smile, "Since the video, we've been pre-booking seats on Saturdays. Especially now it's been getting warmer. If you can make a Tuesday or Thursday it might be better for you anyway."
Vista nods sadly, "This was the only day I could get someone to run a PR patrol long enough for me to meet you."
Dakala shrugs, "Just turn up on your own then. It's not like the clothes matter. Besides, the week days have sort of turned into a cultivation class anyway."
WTF happened to the font in this chapter? also its a giant wall of text

Dragon has her avatar shrug, "I'm also a member of the Protectorate. They sent the request through those channels."
I know this is super late.
But she's a honorary member, for all she acts like an actual one later in canon.

Edit: Formatting on Chapter 12 could use some work. It's a solid wall of text in a off font. And "Mercy is the preserve of the powerful." in Chapter 8 doesn't flow right. There's a couple of options, but I don't want to suggest one in case preserve is a deliberate style choice.

Chapter 21

Chapter 21

Charlotte sits miserably in the dining room as she listens to her grandmother berate her parents in the lounge. How her grandmother knew that there was gossip to be had she doesn't know. But she'd not been sat down to talk to her parents for 10 minutes before she waltzed in and listened as she described the low level bullying at school, and how it ramped up after January.

The sound of one of the chairs being pulled out has her looking up as her mother sits down next to her. "Charlotte, why didn't you tell us that things were getting worse?"

Charlotte looks at her mother in disbelief, "Mom, you didn't believe me. I didn't believe me half the time."

"What do you mean?"

"My homework or pens sometimes ended up in my locker when I was sure I put them in my bag. Even when I was sure I hadn't gone to my locker. Not often, just enough that I… And then Taylor Hebert went missing, and it started getting worse, and they said I was acting out and they told you and you believed them. When my swim gear soaked my books you called me stupid. I mean, even I figured out that they were picking the lock on my locker at that point. But you believed the school because their friends backed them up."

Charlotte abruptly shuts up as she realizes that her grandmother has stopped shouting at dad.

In a tight voice, her mother asks, "What do you want to do now?"

Charlotte shrinks down in her chair, and in a small voice says, "I want to get that job and prove that it's not me. That I'm not just acting out for attention."

Charlotte waits for the lecture on how she's not responsible enough to be trusted, or something like that. When her mother says, "Ok. You can use the phone in our bedroom to let your boss know."

Charlotte doesn't move as she's waiting for the other shoe to drop, then her mother adds, "If you choose to attend the shop on Saturdays you still have to attend the Synagogue for a few hours to keep your grandmother happy. I'll deal with her if it becomes a problem."

"Really?"

Her mother nods, "As my mother has just repeatedly reminded us, part of our duty as parents is to listen to our children just as it is our children's duty to honor their parents. How can we hope to teach if we do not listen to what you don't understand. You know the law as well as any, Shabbat is a day of rest. If you find that rest in a shop, then that is where you find it. What matters is that you find rest."

"How?"

"I was not always a mother, and I had the same questions myself. Your grandmother is very traditional. Fortunately, our rabbi was more open minded, though I chose to spend the day at home I do like my embroidery. The sun is setting if you want to make your phone call. And do remember that you can talk to the rabbi if you have any questions."

Charlotte darts for the stairs before rushing into the kitchen to grab the bag with Michelle's phone number in it.

My name is Hao Bo, and I'm the founding ancestor of the Three Whispers Sect. It is my hope that in the future my Dao and cultivation technique will allow others of our sect to breach the heavens.

With this Dao along with my sisters Dao of Integrity, we have brought safety and prosperity to the Xinyeng region. But be warned, this is not a fast or easy path to power. Most of your bottle necks will come when you turn the Dao on yourself and struggle to accept the truths that you reveal. Indeed, many of my sect have accused me of following a Dao of Truth, much as they accused my sister of following a Dao of Honesty.

There is an element of truth to their accusations, however, Appraisal is to Truth as barter is to money. It is because of our skills that we have chosen to entrust our Dao to the loose cultivator Chónghuò Xīnshēng and her daughter. She has promised to return these slips to the Sect if it survives the next three centuries.

If she has entrusted this to you after the demise of our Sect, then I urge you to meditate on all the different things and ways that can be appraised. As while many consider this to be an abstract Dao, it is instead a hybrid between abstract and knowledge. Something I have shown by taking the previously incomplete Dao to the Heavens.

Kayden pulls the jade slip away from her forehead with a pensive expression on her face. She's not sure if this is a slap in the face, a gift, or a message.

The sound of footsteps coming down the concrete path sees Kayden putting the slip into her purse before turning towards the gate on the property, "Mrs Donaldson?"

The woman walking down the path nods, "Ms Anders, thank you for coming, I saw your work at Libby's house and she gave me your card. Please, come in."

Kayden nods politely, "Thank you, I hope you don't mind that I brought Aster with me."

Mrs Donaldson starts to open the gate as she says, "Not at all. Morgan has allowed me to redecorate the dining room."

Kayden nods as she looks Mrs Donaldson up and down and appraises her choice of clothing. A couple of steps later she stumbles over her feet as she realizes that her normal evaluation of another woman's clothing and posture is an appraisal.

As Mrs Donaldson looks back with a little concern, in order to cover the slip, Kayden makes a point of lifting up one of her feet and feeling the narrow sole of the heel. With a sour look on her face she says, "I think the sole of one my shoes is going."

Mrs Donaldson winces in sympathy, "I remember losing one at the mayors gala a couple of years ago."

Kayden gives Mrs Donaldson a grateful smile before continuing to push Aster's stroller towards the house as she resolves to read the entirety of the jade slip later.

Dakala smiles as she pushes open the door to the tea shop.

From the side of the shop Michelle calls, "Dakala, you just missed the morning rush." Indicating at the girl standing next to her she continues, "This is Charlotte, my new assistant. She'll be advising customers on Saturdays, and general assistance the rest of the week."

Dakala smiles and bows to the girl, "Good morning, I'm sure we'll have plenty of time to get to know each other when it's less busy. Speaking of which, where is everyone?"

Charlotte nervously says, "Uh, the PRT has started their holiday schedule. Um. A group has just gone in and the tour should be finished at around half one."

Michelle smiles, "It's OK, Dakala is here to do her tea ceremony. You're fully booked for the next two weeks by the way, so you might want to let the regulars know."

Dakala nods as she steps over the rope protecting the ceremony area. "When did that happen?"

"Saturday. Sorry for not letting you know, we were packed the entire day. I'm glad I hired Charlotte, as she was able to field a lot of the queries while I was running the till."

"It's a good thing we got the sect started then."

Michelle nods, "It is, and after the holidays I'll probably start joining you for the weekday tea ceremonies while Charlotte watches the counter."

Charlotte cocks her head to one side curiously, "Why?"

Dakala smiles and takes her cushion out of her ring as she gestures to Michelle.

Michelle snorts and says, "The weekday sessions have turned into an informal class on cultivation and using qi."

"Using what?"

Michelle blinks, "Have you heard of Tea Master on PHO?"

Charlotte shakes her head, "No, I've, um, not really been able to get online much in the last few months."

"Ah, well there's a new method to get superpowers called Cultivation. Rather than getting powers in a single instant, you instead need to work hard and cultivate your qi. That can then be used to do various superhuman things. Such as boiling a pot of water."

"Could, ah." Charlotte licks her lips, "Could they be used to keep your stuff safe?"

Michelle tips her hand backwards and forwards, "Sort of. Once you are able to Cultivate, Dakala or the Empress might invite you to their sect. If they do, you'll be given a spacial ring like this one. You can store anything in it."

Dakala looks backwards and says, "Although there's no air inside, so living things will die."

Their conversation cuts off as a crowd of tourists pushes their way into the store, some of them waving tickets towards Dakala.

Missy groans as she pushes herself to her feet and stumbles towards the communal dining room shortly after the morning gong woke her.

As she reaches the doorway, the Empress gently touches her elbow from behind, "Not today Missy. You're moving well enough that you can join the morning exercises."

Missy turns and stares at the entrance to the pagoda, "But, I'm not ready."

The Empress chuckles, "This is why you need to do the exercises. You won't get to the level of being able to run errands during the 'camp', but I hope to get you to the point where you can start practicing with your meteor hammer."

As Missy starts to stagger after the Empress she groans, "Why meteor hammer?"

"Why don't you examine the hammer and see what insights you can glean from it after practice."

Missy groans once more. "I don't get it."

"Don't get what?"

"The Dao you've given me."

The Empress looks back with a smile, "It wouldn't be a path to enlightenment if it was easy. Have you at least read it?"

"No, ah, sort of. I don't really understand what it's talking about."

"How do you think you could go about finding out more?"

"Um, school?"

The Empress smiles encouragingly, "That's one method, any others?"

"Um." Missy pauses to think as she carefully navigates the stairs to the courtyard.

Her eyes brighten slightly, "Ooh, how about the Central Library?"

"Any others?"

"Um, no?"

"You should talk to Dakala and any others that are around later. They might have some more ideas for you."

"Can't you just tell me?"

The Empress turns to face Missy, "I could, but what would you learn if I did?"

"Where I can find out stuff?"

"Almost, you'd learn whatever I told you. But that is not the way of the Dao. Turn to face me and stand with your feet shoulder width apart."

As Missy shuffles into position, she asks, "So what is the way of the Dao?"

"It is a personal journey of discovery and enlightenment. Rock backwards and forwards on your feet and feel how your changing balance feels on your feet."

Missy starts doing that as she's thinking. As she's rocking backwards and forwards, trying to work out what the Empress wants her to feel, something clicks. "Is it like planning your own patrols, where you need to be aware of the gangs you're likely to run across, places you could be ambushed, and things like that."

The Empress smiles, "You're on the right track, yes. Start moving side to side too."

Missy frowns as she starts to move from side to side, her knees bending slightly. "Don't bend your knees."

Startled, Missy stumbles forwards as she over balances.

"Move back to your starting position and start moving around again. While you're doing that, think about why you over balanced."

Missy scowls as she does just that.

After a minute or so, The Empress crouches down on one leg and puts her other leg out straight in front of her before placing it on the floor. Then she smoothly transfers over to the other leg, before lifting up the now back leg and placing it in front of her like before. "Missy, try to do this. When you transfer, don't stand up, just move smoothly from one foot to the other."

Missy scowls and tries to do just that, only to fall over backwards before she's even got her foot down. After several tries, she huffs, "It's impossible, I can't do it."

The Empress chuckles, "Dakala said the same thing. Dakala! Come over here and demonstrate step of the prowling tiger."

Dakala folds her fans with a snap and turns to face Missy and the Empress, "Oh, yeah. I hated that move. Once you've got it right, Empress will just tell you it's wrong and how to fix it. But it is still an important move in martial arts. The important thing is to be aware of your balance, and that you don't have to go as low as she does right off the bat."

As Dakala demonstrates the move, it's clear that she's not going nearly as low as the Empress is.

On her third step, the Empress says, "Remember to loosen your hips, and push off with your front foot before you move. Keep your knees behind your toes."

Missy can see the grimace on Dakala's face as she starts making adjustments to her movements.

═══════ ೋღ ֍ ღೋ ═══════

After nearly 2 hours of practice, Missy's struggling to think, let alone move, as she staggers into the dining room. As she kneels down at the small table, Dakala ruffles her hair, "You did well for your first time."

Missy mumbles, "Thanks. How did you get so good at this so quickly?"

Dakala looks out of a window at the forest to the north, "Initially, there was a lot of practice and then I was able to get to the mortal library on the second floor. That's when I started reading about some of the techniques I could do, like that leaf technique I told you about before. I've also been in a couple of fights, and they quickly showed me why this is so important. I think that following my Dao has also helped me, as I've been learning all sorts of things while looking for insights into Life."

Missy leans over to put her head on the table, "I've still got no ideas about my own Dao. I don't understand why I was even given this one."

Dakala puts her hand on Missy's shoulder, "What is it? If you don't mind me asking."

"Integrity. The introduction seems simple enough, but where would I even start? Why me?"

Dakala huffs in amusement, "Missy, Integrity is something that people have. Are they honest or will they lie to you? Can you trust them at your back, or are they likely to stab you? I think there's also stuff about buildings too."

"Oh, like the way mum and dad keep changing their plans just because they don't like things, or to annoy each other?"

Dakala nods, "Yes, just like that."

"How would I know if I've even had any insight into it?"

"I'd say, you'll know when it happens. But I doubt you'd be happy with that answer. I know I wasn't when the Empress told me. Even though it's absolutely true. Instead, I'll ask, have you been given the pond in a garden analogy?"

"Analogy?"

"Um, metaphor, simplified explanation, comparison?"

"Oh, right. I've never heard the word before. Um, yes."

Dakala nods, "Well, when you cultivate you're making the pond bigger, but it can only get as big as the garden it's in. Your Dao would be how you make the garden bigger. Each bit of insight allows you to fit more qi into your soul."

"So, what's stopping me from just asking my teachers about it and reading whatever they give me."

Dakala laughs, "Absolutely nothing, and it will do absolutely nothing for you either. I tried that with Life, I read everything I could find on the internet about life and DNA. Nothing. The rosebush in the courtyard? The Empress made that from a bit of rice taken off a mochi to show me the difference between knowledge and understanding or insight…"

Dakala trails off as she notices that Missy's eyes widened just before she pulled out her phone and started tapping on it.
