Resurgence: The Threads of Fate

Fishing with ourselves as bait? How scary.

[X] Grab the chain and pull whatever's on the other side towards you.
-[X] Remember to ground yourself properly when pulling

Well, I can have no complaints about that plan. It sounds like a worthy follow-up.

[X] Grab the chain and pull whatever's on the other side towards you.

Chapter 3: An Unexpected Action
[X] Grab the chain and pull whatever's on the other side towards you.
-[X] Remember to ground yourself properly when pulling

Your hand instinctively reaches out to grasp the chain. With each tug of the fetter, you slowly feel your sense of self peeling away. Slowly but surely, the weapon was doing its job, albeit at a much slower pace than the darkness initially expected. Anger coursed through your veins all of a sudden. Indignation at the unfairness of the world. Why the hell should you have to die? You've barely begun to make your way into the world, and suddenly, this being of unknown nature wanted your life? Like hell.

With slow deliberation, you raised your right hand and wrapped the taut chain around your wrist. Leaning back slightly, your gripped the chain further down the line with your left hand and heaved. Teeth bared in defiance, you ripped at the chains desperately, clawing away from the depths of the abyss. A shriek rang through the air as you felt the force behind the chains give way. Surprise flickered on your face.

...what?

But the darkness wouldn't give in that easily. Your grip on the chain had slackened slightly, and a sudden pull from the other side nearly launched you forward. Once again, your hardened resolve washed over you, and you managed to catch yourself before you crashed into the dirt. Oh, you're not going to take me that easily. Once again wrapping the chain around your wrist, you began wrenching the chain, and your freedom, back one inch at a time.

Distress emanated from the darkness, as it attempted to peel away from you, each pull generating an inhuman screech of pain and anger. Arrogance and disbelief rolled out in waves. How could a mere human defy the collection of dead....things....that had become it's core? You sure as hell didn't know. Sweat began gathering at your neck as you began to feel lightheaded. You felt dread again. Were your efforts futile? How long would you remain in contention with this being?

Just as you begun to despair, you heaved one last time and felt the chain give way. A scream, long and loud, resounded throughout the night. It was the sound of hundreds dying a painful of death all at the same time. It was beasts in the night as it roared in anger at lost. It was the sound of you winning the night.

The chain hit the ground limply, and you watched in satisfaction as the darkness hurled away, deep into the forest. You hadn't noticed it, but your legs had turned to jelly, and you collapsed to your knees. Celebration was certainly in order, but the tiredness was...overwhelming. Blinking rapidly, you realized you still had the chain wrapped around your right hand. It still glowed a sickening green. Even alone it generated enough evil to make you want to hurl.

Before you could shake it off, you watched in horror as the chain began sinking into your skin. No amount of scrabbling could get it out either. Pulled by an unknown force, the chain began to retract into your body, and just when the wicked blade touched your hand, it disappeared without a trace. A sinister laugh shook the air.

"Yes..." It whispered, "You are worthy. What is caught cannot escape...except you. Use me as you wish. Reap what you will. The one who wielded me before it but a shadow, and in its wake, you are the caster of that shadow. Yes...I find you most agreeable. With your power...No one escapes..."

With that, the voice disappeared into the recesses of your mind. Something like a wall had gone up in your mind. You could feel it. But no amount of pressure could break that wall, no matter how hard you concentrated. You had been occupied, and your mind was no longer your own. Before you could even begin to grasp the implications, another, more human, voice squeaked out,

"M-monster!" You turned around slowly. Without your noticing, the wagon had arrived. Its horses whinnied nervously and pawed the ground. A young man sat at the head, the glow of his lantern exposing his young scared face and blond short hair.

Well, shit.

What do?
[] Use the powers of your excellent social skills to calm the man down. That's sarcasm, by the way. If this choice is picked, a roll will be used to determine it's effectiveness.
[] *Force* him to take you far away from this god forsaken forest. His impression of you matters little in the face of the great danger every second spent here represents.
[] (!!! SPECIAL !!! option available) Scare the man into servitude. The weapon seemed eager to serve. Perhaps with a little prodding to this other...occupant...in your mind, you might be able to make use of it.

Obviously the only way to play any sort of character with super inhuman powers is to make them unbearably cute and social.

What is it about us that makes him say that? Did he see the fight?

Excellent.

[X] Hop in the wagon like nothing happened and tell him to drive as if death itself was on his heels. It is not safe here.
- [X] Try to chat him up as you go with your amazing social skills, put him at ease... maybe?

I mean, when someone who just overcame Grim Reaper drops into your wagon, what are you going to do? Throw them out? That would probably be a bad idea to try.

And if they say that it's not safe, you probably don't want to waste time arguing or worse yet, risk running away.

Once we are on our way out, we can try to calm the man down... or drive him mad with fear, it's all in the dice. Regardless of what happens, we'll be in the wagon and moving.

I have nothing to say for myself. I saw SPECIAL and knew what to pick.

Lets get our scythe buddy a proper shaft when we can. Chain weapons are a pain to use, as the Grim Reaper found out.

...

You didn't know what to say against the charges levied against you. A slight daze had over come you, only exacerbated by your physical tiredness. It was as if a bubble was expanding in your head, pushing out all forms of thought, both rational and irrational. You were very tired. Yet you forced yourself to rise to your feet, much to the dismay of the wagon rider. Swaying, you turned around and slowly walked towards the wagon. With every step taken, the horses became more and more agitated, their eyes wide in fear. They were getting extremely annoying. As you passed them, they were on the verge of bucking. Whipping around, you hissed,

"Quiet."

Almost at once the horses stilled. However, they weren't relaxed, they stood stock still, their muscles bulging as they struggled to stop any forms of movement. Even the wagon boy was quiet, but he watched you warily as you climbed into the back and settled down. Clambering to the front, you watched the boy tense up as you drew near. On some level, you felt hurt, but a larger part of you didn't care. You just needed to leave this place.

"You saw what happened, boy?"

"...Yes, ma'am." Through his quiet facade, you could easily hear the tremble in his voice as he spoke. Whatever else words he wanted to speak he stifled. The one who fought a monstrous spirit and won sat directly behind him. The boy was no fool.

"Then ride. Turn this wagon around and go back the way you came."

Wordlessly, the boy gathered the reins in his hand and whipped the horses. Almost as if a spell had been broken, the statute like horses whipped around as if nothing had happened, and trotted down the road again. You leaned back, looking at the sky. Unlike before, the stars twinkled and the moon's previous powerful gaze was humbling sitting behind a thin cloud cover. It was different. With the rhythmic clopping of hooves, you closed your eyes and allowed yourself to drift into a deep slumber.

You dreamed.
What of?

[] A childhood memory and a beautiful wide open plain.
[] The forest, in its duality. Dark and dangerous, yet mysterious and ever flowing in grace.
[] Formlessness.
[] Three forms entering the forest. You recognize none of them.
[] A little bright sphere that playfully bounced to and fro.

With a gasp, you sat up quickly. What an odd dream. Before you could recall it fully, parts of it slipped away. Not all of it though. Thankfully, you were able to retain the most important parts.

The sun was slowly rising, splashing orange across the sky. With no clouds to obstruct it, you winced slightly as its rays struck you. You noticed with some displeasure that the wagon was still clacking along. How far did this boy ride? However, the trees had been replaced with flat plains and...fences? Behind them you could hear the bleating of sheep and mooing of cows. People squatted in the fields, sweat already pouring off their brows. They spared you and wagon a glance before going about their morning.

Civilization, apparently. A very small settlement. Wooden housing was seen at periodic intervals, with the road leading up to what seemed to be a village square. An anxiety suddenly gripped your heart. If the boy's reaction from last night was anything to go by, you couldn't exactly expect a warm welcome, could you? Of course, something like that would occur if someone let loose what had transpired the night before.

Peeking out, you fixed a small glare at the back of boy's head. A bead of sweat washed down the back of his neck.

"Y-you don't need to do that, miss." ...? He could feel your gaze? Either he was that sensitive or you were more powerful than you thought, "I know what you're thinkin'. I won't say a word to anyone. Just....promise not to hurt anybody here?"

You felt relief well up in your chest.

As with the farmers, the villagers only gave you two a cursory glance, but it seemed more friendlier than the ones before. One of the men even called out to the boy, who cheerfully (a bit forced) greeted him back. Just from a single ride through, you could see several shops, a doctor's business, and an inn & tavern. No signs though, so you couldn't even guess the names.

Finally, the wagon came to a stop in front of a shop. A general store, it seemed.

"Well, here we are, miss. I don't know--"

Suddenly, the front door crashed open. A large man stood there. His belly poured over the belt he had strapped around his trousers. A clean shaven face revealed a few facial scars on his cheeks. One of his eyes was milky white, the other an emerald green. That one eye was fixed on the boy, who cowered slightly.

"Simon, what in gods name are you doing back here so soon?! Those wares had better all been sold or I--"

"I'm sorry, sir!" The boy, Simon, glanced at you helplessly, "I just found this girl out in the forest at night. I couldn't leave her by herself so--"

The large man rounded on you. Looking up at him, you felt a sudden nervousness. You could see why Simon was intimidated by him. Luckily, the man didn't seem particularly angry. Instead, he looked curious.

"Hm, if I didn't have a heart, I'd get mad at you, boy. But I do, and it makes me curious about you, girl. That forest ain't exactly known for being dangerous but a young one like you shouldn't be wandering around by yourself."

...What about Simon? He was all alone too, you know.

"What's your name, little lady?"

[X] Introduce yourself and... say that you do not remember anything besides that. Neither who you were, nor how you ended up in the forest.

Tell him the truth to the extent he can handle. The man says he has heart... he has to realize we don't have money or a place to stay, since we don't remember where we even belong. He might give us a breakdown of where we ended in, a roof for the night, or point us in the right direction to search for answers.

We kind of need help right now, and he seems like a good fella. And if he is not, there is always A SURPRISE SCYTHE TO THE FACE!!

Ahem.
"Y-you don't need to do that, miss." ...? He could feel your gaze? Either he was that sensitive or you were more powerful than you thought, "I know what you're thinkin'. I won't say a word to anyone. Just....promise not to hurt anybody here?"
We didn't seriously think of killing a kid just now, did we?

Ahem.

We didn't seriously think of killing a kid just now, did we?

A misconception on his part. The "glare" was one of "fucking shit hell now what?". It was just that although he is technically your savior, he's also the possible source of your early undoing. It was really just you venting internally and him being the nearest object to project onto.

Do we have an idea of what we are and why people would be opposed to our continued existence?

I know we can be scary, but beyond that?

Also, do we even need to eat or sleep?

There's a reason why "Resurgence" is in the title. It's not to just make it look cool.

Hard to answer your question without spoiling what's ahead. Um, you don't necessarily require food and sleep, but you DO need sustenance and you do feel sleepy.

...lol.

The Dream

There was nothing. Not fear, not happiness, nor despair or exuberance. No feeling of any kind. You simply existed. That was just fine. It was comfortable enough. No fears of intrusion from the outside world. But if you were describe yourself...it would be a blob with identity. You still knew who you were. Hell, you can tell that this was a dream. How odd. If you could scratch your head or raise your eyebrows, you would. But such action was unnecessary. No one needed to see this confusion anyway.

This type of abyss felt more at home than the one in the forest. Trapped within your own mind, you "floated" around peacefully. In a world like this, one could sit here for a millenia and have it feel like but a single second. Losing your sense of time could prove dangerous, yet you didn't particularly care. You wanted to be here.

...?

You did? Why? With those simple questions, you could feel your own little pocket slowly melt away. It was as if an illusion had slowly melted away, leaving you with lingering questions. As if to mock you, this new sense of awareness came to you as an unbearable world of complete white.

Nothing could be hidden in such a world, and now that you happened upon it, you felt the darkness become stifling. Everything could be revealed, and for some reason, this gave you a sense of purpose. Questions too. Clarity wouldn't come without its price though. The white was blinding, and no matter how hard you tried to dull your senses, it would always be there, waiting to be discovered.

New trait gained!

Back in the village...

Drawing yourself up, you looked the larger man in the eye and replied, "My name is Amaranth."

Simon and the larger man waited expectantly for the rest, but nothing was incoming. It took them all of a minute to realize that you weren't going to say anything else. Simon fidgeted uncertainly as he glanced up at the larger man. I suppose that means the big guy isn't stacked with patience, is he? Almost on cue, the big man barked out a "Well?!". You flinched slightly at his booming voice. This was a man who was not oft ignored.

Drawing up a sigh, you cast your eyes to the ground, and partially told the truth, "I'm not certain how I got into the forest. All I can recall is that I was walking there for ages. Only thing I'm certain of is my first name."

Wow, that sounded a little more depressing than you thought it would. You eased a glance up at the man and noticed a mix of expressions; uncertainty, concern, and more interestingly, a quick flash of fear. Both you and Simon stood silently and awaited the big man's reply. He'd crossed his arms and was murmuring to himself. Too low to overhear. However, his loud voice cut through the silence, causing you and Simon to jump in surprise,

"Alright then, Amaranth. I can't leave you here out alone in good conscious. For tonight, you can be assured to have a roof over your head. I have a mess of blankets that haven't seen use in some time anyway."

Surprised, you felt relief at his words. You didn't exactly have the most restful sleep in that wagon. Not only that, it had been chillier than you thought, and you'd woken up with numb cheeks and a slightly runny nose. A feather stuffed pillow and a pile of warm covers would be very nice indeed.

"But we need to find out who you are. You're too damn young to be out in this world all alone. Speaking honestly, it don't fit right with me. What kind of parents would let you wander about at your age?"

...Speaking of...how old am I? Your eyes fell upon the store's glass pane. What greeted you was a girl with pale skin and long black hair. Two frosty blue eyes gazed back at you as you stared. Touching your cheek, you felt discomfited. Your lost memories didn't shift in response and your mind drew a blank. In other words...

You don't recognize this face.

Pushing aside your discomfort, you hid it behind a smile, "Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Does this village have...I don't know, missing persons posters or something?"

The big man simply laughed, "Girl, too many people go missing in this world. Sending letters shouldn't be done unless you're assured of the persons location. If ol' boy Simon here went missing in that forest, chances are, nobody would say anything for a week or two."

The look of shock must've been visible on your face because the man caught himself, "Oh, that came out wrong. It's just that Simon's trips to the big city take a minimum of five days, and that's in the best conditions. It's not abnormal for him to be gone for an extended period of time."

Oh, so that's how it is.

"As for your identity problem, I would suggest going to the town hall and meeting with the Elder of this village. He's the man to talk to if you wanted to know anything of import around here. Official documents and such go through his office. If I'm not mistaken, he even received a letter from the King! I'll have Simon show you the way, if you want."

"Ulster, you sure you don't want me to begin the journey back towards the city immediately? I mean, I did come back and all..." Simon looked a little ashamed. But then you notice him glance up at you, a flash of fear in his eyes, before locking his gaze on the ground. Ouch. The big man, Ulster, merely slapped Simon on his back,

"No can do, boy. That old bastard Shaman predicted a storm a few hours after you left. He said it would happen within the next few days. I wanted to smack him a good one for not telling me sooner. You realized what could've happened if you got caught up in that?" Still grumbling, Ulster turned his gaze back towards you, "Speaking of, you could visit the Shaman I suppose. He knows a bit of magic. Dunno if that would help you at all though."

For a moment, you felt surprise. Magic? Then you realized how stupid your surprise was. Of course there's magic around. How else would near intangible creatures of nigh untouchable darkness be wandering around dark forests stealing souls? On a deeper level, you still felt some confusion. Magic? Hmm.

"Or, if you want to earn your keep for the day, you could help me with the store. Sweep, put items in stock, that sort of thing. Hell, I'd even pay ya! You're gonna need a leg up since you're starting all over from scratch." You could see the pity in his eyes.
