Replacing the Zippo

[X] Plan: Serious Seeding
-[X]Study with Willow, get her seeing you more seriously
-[X]Let the bullies get in alone and fight the pack with Buffy and Willow
-[X]Try to get an interaction where you notice something "off" about Angel with him, like not being out of breath at all, directly point it out to him. Do not call him a vampire, but make it clear you think he's either on drugs or doing something magic. Later once it comes to light that he is a vampire, and one with a soul, say we should be cautious but his experience as an "Centuries Old Corpse" may have some use for the group to keep around. Find a separate private interaction with Angel, point out to him he is wooing a teenage girl, tell him just how wrong that is.
-[X]Help Giles organize his books

This one works for me. I've realized that I know so little about the show, Buffy, that I'm struggling to understand some of the nuances of these plans.

I think this would be the second step after first inviting Angel to work with the group. Good point about how the hyena might mess with "Xander's" head more though.

The episode in question is the one where we learn he is a Vampire, as such we need to do it now/before it is revealed to try and get the idea of Xander having an Intuition about things established. I also admit I really want the centuries old vampire to remember the huge age gap. I want to shunt that on what should be the more reasonable side to convince as fast as possible. (Also I just like using that horrid line about vampires not having breath in a way that would make some sense.

The original idea was to be intrigue guy with the info, so we should probably get on it.
I like trying to get to Willy's bar, but I think we need to establish ourselves with the group more strongly first, and if things do go wrong at the Bar we're not quite capable to defend ourselves right now.

It makes sense because Xander is friends with Willow who is also friends with Buffy, and he knows that there are more dangers than just vampires now. Quizzing Giles should be about figuring out what dangers he should be on the lookout for.
If it was "Have Giles quiz you on..." I'd be more into it, the current text suggests that we are quizzing Giles on supernatural creatures and I can't see how that makes sense even if it does help reinforce Giles and we could point him to actual incoming threats.

I can give you a quick summary about who Angel is.

About 240 years ago, Angel was an Irish alcoholic womanizer. His father would yell at Angel for his behavior and hit him. He had a little sister he adored

Darla found Angel, who was absolutely handsome, and decided to turn him into a vampire and have him as her lover. I know Angel agreed to being her lover, can't remember if he agreed to the vampire part but I think he did. Once turned Angel decided it would be awesome to go and kill his entire family! Show his father that he couldn't control Angel, yeah!

Angel and Darla then went on an absolute rampage across Europe. Angel specialized in tormenting others and absolutely breaking them, and Darla would help create riots and bloodbaths. They bathed in luxury.

Eventually they found Drusilla, a pious young woman who had seer visions. She foresaw Angel and Darla coming after her family and tried to defend them. Angel and Darla played with her as cats with a mouse, slowly killing her family until she was the last alive, hiding in a nunnery. They captured her and finally drove her insane before turning her into a vampire, so Angel could have two ladies to sleep with!

Drusilla is absolutely insane, but still had visions, if was problematic in the fact that being insane meant figuring out what she was saying was far more difficult than impatient Angel had time for. Drusilla got an idea from a bad joke Angel made and turned Spike, and our group became known as the Scourge of Europe.

About a 120 years ago Angel decided to have some fun torturing a young Romani girl to death. She was a favorite of her tribe, and in retribution of her death the gypsies cursed Angel to once more gain the ability to feel guilt and pain over killing. Angel tried to ignore his new conscience at first, but it was too much for him. He pretty much lived on rat blood for the next century.

Then a messenger for....some god beings, decided to send Angel to Buffy to help her. He became convinced she could be his salvation from all his crimes, and would repay by helping her.

Buffy and Angel fell in love and did the horizontal tango, only to learn that his "soul" (ability to feel guilt) was tied to him not being happy, and sex makes Angel very happy! Once more without guilt Angel was furious at being a "boytoy" for the vampire slayer, and set about tormenting her and everyone else. Eventually Willow casts a spell to restore his "soul", but Angel is sent to hell like seconds after to seal the hell dimension Angel had opened prior.

It's quite honestly a huge mess, and not helped by normal vampire Angel and guilt vampire Angel viewing each other as different people sharing the same body.

I'm taking "quiz" here as meaning "ask a bunch of questions", not "take a test". Quizzing Giles isn't about helping Giles. It should be about (1) finding out what supernatural threats are around that might be different from or not mentioned in the show & (2) showing Giles that Xander is taking the danger seriously. Hopefully, Buffy will be around to benefit from this knowledge as well.

My concern about your write-in with Angel is that Angel is not currently hanging around the group. Voting to do something doesn't mean that Xander can actually do it, as shown by how we were unable to save Jesse. I suspect that the write-in will lead to Xander wandering around in dangerous areas hoping to find Angel. My suggestion is to make your write-in a subvote for the "Try to convince Buffy to have Angel work with the group and not stay on the edges so you can keep a better eye on him" action.

[ ]Quiz Giles on common supernatural prey Buffy might encounter

Quiz - Predicate / Action

This is testing Giles not ourselves on Supernatural knowledge not us, as written at least. Now I can see a way to do this more subtly on review, "Hey Giles, so we know stick a Vampire with the pointy end of a stick, so what about things like Werewolves and Leprechauns? Could we get their pot of gold?" But still its not like we can get super in depth with our requests without generating some suspicion. I still lean towards trying to bond with the group more socially before taking these types of risks, Xander is still the heart, so he should be there with them.

I think we don't need to go out of our way to get an interaction with Angel, we know he is going to show up after the party at the Bronze to protect Buffy. We just need to be there and as Buffy's friend that shouldn't be too difficult. Though I do admit I almost just made it a sub-vote under it myself tried to keep the essence of the original idea there though. Following the episode plot I see maybe being able to get the first bit of that near the beginning, and the second half later at the end of the episode.

Merriam-Webster.com lists one of the meanings of the word quiz as "to question closely". Maybe looking at the adverb form would help. For instance - "'Why can't I jump off the swing?' asked the toddler quizzically."

If we're going to meet Angel soon, then I'm willing to switch my vote. I'd still like to ask Giles about common supernatural dangers, but spending more time with Willow wouldn't hurt. Our previous votes for the lockets and the mask were successful in helping against supernatural threats, but they hurt Xander's credibility with Willow and Buffy. I'm going to try to keep Xander's image in mind for future votes.

No, I did mean it as asking Giles about possible threats, not testing Giles on information

Slow Changes
You decided to start by trying to rehabilitate your image. You went to Willow and asked her to help you study. It really was for the best. Everyone acts like going back to high school would be easy, but you forget stuff over time, and they're always changing what they want people to know, and that's not even taking into account that you are locked in a building with a bunch of other people that did not get to choose to be there.

So Willow's help is genuinely appreciated. She does ask you about the mask you wore while the substitute teacher was in science class. You tell her you've been trying out some new things, and you aren't sure the mask quite worked the way you wanted it to. Willow nodded. You think this excuse is really only accepted because you stopped wearing the mask and none of the things Buffy and Willow checked for proved true. Willow does seem to see you changing things up in a good light at least. She's willing to encourage you to try stuff out, and she babbles away about how much you'll love school now that you're putting your mind to it. A true optimist. Or simply one that struggles to understand people outside her worldview. A little hard to tell.

The day of the school zoo trip finally came. Seeing two zebras going at it was in fact as amusing as Willow and Xander had described in the show. You wished you could focus entirely on the trip, it was a wonderful break from school. Alas, needs must. You delayed Buffy from trying to head into the hyena house long enough for the zookeeper to stop all of you from going inside. You felt bad for the kid they were bullying, but you wanted to have your head together, not muddled by a hyena spirit.

You got your chance to start drawing attention to the odd way the gang was acting at the Bronze, coming back to remark that Kyle had packed a way harder hit than normal. Both girls of course didn't think it unusual at first, but you made sure you were around when the pack decided to eat the new mascot. You carried regret there. It turned out they didn't kill the pig before they started eating the poor fellow. You rushed to tell Buffy about this. That was enough to get Buffy going, and she hurried in to take the pack down. It wasn't fast enough to save the pig, but it was fast enough to save Principle Flutie. One small animal's death was a good price for that. Hopefully he wouldn't die from something else, he was a good principal and you hated the guy that had replaced him in the show.

Buffy actually made a remark about you being quick to notice there was something off about the group, which had you puffing up proudly. It was a small thing, and she'd likely forget it again quickly, but she had noticed. You had something to start working off of in getting her respect as the Slayer. You knew Buffy tended to not respect others when it came to the supernatural, first from her repulsion of the life and then from her belief as someone who had been on the front lines for so long to know better than anyone else. This was a way to start changing it.

Buffy's date night came and went. You did argue with her that there were ways for people that weren't like her to help in fighting vampires. Sure, it was unwise to fight the vampires themselves, but you could open doors, do distractions, and help with the research. Hadn't Willow and Giles been plenty of use there? That did perk Buffy up at least a little. You felt bad for the poor guy Buffy had dated being kicked to the curb so fast, but he had been an adrenaline junkie.

You offered to help Giles sort through his personal collection for being a Watcher in the library, mentioning that it'd be pretty disastrous if a student took one of his books out as a loan. Giles was worried about how you'd handle the books, but you promised you'd just act as brute muscle for him and not touch anything he told you not to. It was looking like a project that was going to eat a lot of your time, and you partially regretted it. You could have been lazing around, or reading comics, or goofing off with Willow and Buffy. You knew this was more helpful, but it was mind numbing.

At least you were there when Buffy came in talking about Angel. You were quick to ask what kind of guy would be involved in the supernatural. Was he a male version of Buffy? Someone like you? Someone like Giles? Buffy didn't seem happy to think about her mysterious crush as being a nerd like Giles, but you pointed out that would make the most sense for someone human. Giles agreed that there was only one Slayer, and anyone strong enough to fight with her was likely something other than human.

Buffy got a bit of a clue there, and even more when it finally straight up came out that Angel was a vampire. She was really tearing up about it. You listened, and suggested that she get Angel to spend time with her at the library you all hung out in. You could keep an eye on the vampire for her without her having to worry so much, or risk letting him into her house. Buffy wanted badly for Angel to prove he was a good guy, so she was quick to grab the compromise despite Giles' protests. Willow seemed just as thrilled about the forbidden romance of it all.

Giles reminded you that there was no such thing as a good vampire, and you pointed out that Buffy wasn't going to listen. At least by having Angel in front of all of you you could keep an eye out for her and not worry about any secret meet ups. Giles was reassured by that. Especially when he finally met Angel, and recognized him as Angelus, one of the Scourge of Europe. But Angel killed Darla, something Giles thought Angel would have never done, so he was willing to give Angel a chance.

You just hoped Angel didn't get Giles to change his mind about him. Angel was highly charismatic, unless you had an active reason to dislike him he was hard to resist. You at least had that in the knowledge that Angel would lose himself and try to kill all of you. You just wished that Angel was less unnerving to be around in person. You didn't know why, it wasn't exactly like vampires had a tangible presence you could pick up on. The guy just really rubbed you wrong.

The year was going by fast. Willow was getting used to you being more serious. Buffy was still focusing on her boy trouble, but you had saved Principal Flutie, and Giles was pleased that you were helping him out. You could have done with a little less of that, considering how much dusting of books you'd gotten up to. At least the work to digitize the school library went without any demons being released.

You looked over your list for the last four major events of the year. The school talent show that would have a demon harvesting people's organs for its disguise, the kid that would drag everyone into the nightmare realm from his coma, the invisible girl trying to kill Cordelia and her friends from tormenting her, and the prophecy of the Master killing Buffy.

There was no reason for you to wait to try and help the invisible girl. You could start looking for her immediately. You of course didn't know how to turn her visible again, and you knew that the Hellmouth influencing her enough to turn her invisible made her volatile. You would have to be careful in how you tried to approach that.

For the talent show, you could sign up for it yourself, since you knew that you wouldn't be assigned to it as punishment. You could see if you could befriend the demon hunter cursed into a ventriloquist doll before his soul animating the doll moved on entirely too. You weren't too clear on what you could do with a nightmare realm that would bring your worst fears to life, maybe just try and stick in a group? The prophecy at least would be easy to deal with. You could follow Buffy down to see the Master, or bring a crossbow to attempt killing him yourself.

Xander's rehabilitation of his image seems to have gone well! Now it's just time to figure out what to do next.

The General Actions all look good except for the romance one. I think that signing up for the talent show will let us intervene without showing off that we know stuff we shouldn't like looking for the doll would. Of course, there's the problem of what Xander's talent would be.

What would this Xander's worst fear be? Should we be trying to make sure that no one else sees it?

As for the Master, I'd like to shoot him with a crossbow, but Xander has not trained with a crossbow. We could learn self defense, but I don't know if that would be enough, and it would mean ignoring the invisible girl. Actually, I'm kind of surprised that the invisible girl vote is included in the General Actions when the other events have separate votes.

For the fear it will either be clowns (a loaned fear response from real Xander) or maybe just... real Xander IE being found out to be a false Xander.

I agree with not romancing the Invisible Girl... and I honestly think now would be a good time to try and to find Willy's Bar, I really feel that summer is the time we should work on improving physically. I honestly think its not that bad for most of the finale to run as normal? Its a bit morbid but... Buffy dying for a little is kind of a helpful thing since we will get Kendra (and down the line Faith... but that's just cause I really like Faith).

Has anything we've done so far made it so that the finale won't go the same way as the show? I've never actually watched the show, only read a ton of fanfiction, so it's hard for me to tell.

Theoretically, befriending the invisible girl will help our group with Intrigue actions, but that's assuming that she doesn't attack us. I don't really want to leave her stuck in such a bad situation, but I'm not sure if we can help her, and I also want to finally focus on Xander himself. I'm torn between self-defense and Wily's bar though. Is Xander safe if he goes to Wily's bar? Can he actually get useful information from there and without being attacked in the process?

Xander seems to be building up a better and more mature relationship, also Giles seems to be starting to trust his judgement. Speaking of actions, I think learning self defense is really important.

No actions have altered the finale so far. It's mostly been small changes that will prove more useful. Buffy won't struggle as much in school with Principal Flutie around for example.

From what Xander knows from the Buffy show, Willy's Bar should be a useful resource. Whether it actually is would require investigation

Ok, I'm willing to change my votes based on how the discussion goes, and I have no idea what to do for the nightmare realm, but here are my current votes.

[X]Learn self defense
[X]Sign up for the talent show
[X]For the Master, do the same as in the show

I was torn between self defense and Wily's Bar, but I don't really think that it would be a good idea to go there without knowing at least a little bit of self defense. Also, learning self defense would make it easier to choose potentially dangerous options like seeking out the invisible girl in the future.

On the one hand, Xander is the zippo. "The heart of the group in Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and a source of emotional support and comic relief for the whole cast. So Xander solving a problem with the power of friendship is very appealing. It's also the right thing to do.

On the other hand hand we have a whole pile of problems.
The smallest problem is that Xander isn't Xander, it's someone from the audience trying to help out. Their social skills seem to be even worse than Xander "my foot is stuck in my mouth" Harris.
The invisible girl, Marcie Ross, is kind of a psychopath. Buffy and company try to talk to her repeatedly, but she never replies until the torture scene at the end. In cannon, she ends up abducted by the FBI and trained as an assassin; which she thinks is "cool." So that's not great. Mitigating this somewhat is that being pulled into Xander and Buffy's circle of friends is the same as signing up for a decade long war against everything that goes bump in the night. Someone who wants to be an assassin will have fewer problems adjusting to this than a normal person.
Last but not least, Xander's friends in the first season pretty much all end up dead. Dude seems a bit cursed that way. Not sure being Xander's friend will actually be good for Marcie in the long run.

On the plus side, one of the long-running problems Buffy has is that no humans can meaningfully contribute to the fighting. An invisible girl will have a lot more survivability than the rest of Buffy's friends. Enough to maybe even be useful. Especially if she gets training, say from a certain demon hunting ventriloquist dummy?

So I'm torn. I want to vote for being Marcie's friend. Mostly because it seems like the right thing to do, but it also has a lot of ways to go badly wrong while competing against self-improvement options.

I'm going to go for plan friendship.

The demon in the puppet episode is pretending to be a high school magician. Normally that'd be a great disguise but we know magic is real, we just don't know if Marc's magic is real. So we've got an excuse to follow him to find if he's a real magician, and if he is, if he's an enemy or can be recruited as an ally. Ideally, Marcie can do the actual following and spying while invisible. If that works, and she and Xander can convince the others, that would be a great way to introduce her to the group and have her accepted. If Marcie isn't invisible or not friendly enough, I guess I'd be in favor of trying to make friends with the demon hunting puppet instead.

I kind of want to recommend that instead of killing the demon from the puppet episode, we just amputate its limbs so that puppet dude can stick around and train us. The canon demon survives having its head chopped off, so it might survive being delimbed. It'd also be very justified and fun when the demon inevitably got loose and caused problems. It's hard to believe anyone else in the group going along with this plan, even if its the only way to keep the demon hunting mannequin alive. Part of me can't let go of the idea of more friends though. Friends forever!

As for the Master, we're not at all a threat to him. In the canon episode, he catches crossbow bolts. He's fast and strong and has an army of vampires. Fortunately, he's also overconfident and trapped in an itty bitty space. So wait until the night of the prophecy when the Master sends all of his usual vampire guards away so he can "lure" the Slayer to join him in his prison. Then get Angel to lead the team down there carrying a bunch of gasoline and molotov cocktails. Burn the tiny bit of space the Master is magically forced to stay in. It doesn't matter how fast he is if everything is on fire - he can run all he wants when everywhere he can go is burning. It doesn't matter if he can catch the stuff the team is throwing if its on fire. Set him on fire, and keep him on fire until the smoke from his ashes "rises". This may cause problems later since the cast apparently don't realize that the Helmouth is in the library at this point, but the Master is making the crucial mistake of trapping himself in a tiny area where he can bring almost none of his advantages to bear, and is also planning on sending all his guards away. Let's take advantage.

We can bring oxygen masks and bottles if we're paying enough attention to physics to be worried about using all the oxygen up with the fire.

Whatever we do, we can at least avoid asking Buffy out to the dance.

[X] Plan: Friendship and Fire
-[X] Work on befriending invisible girl
-[X] Have invisible Marcie follow Marc (the demon who isn't a puppet) because he's a magician.
-[X] [Prophecy] Kill the Master with lots of fire

No particular plan for the Nightmare Realm. I think that what our protagonist is most afraid of is that his new friends might abandon him. If our protagonist was worried about dying, he wouldn't be sticking it out and playing Xander's role. He'd have left and gotten a job doing whatever he used to do using his pre-reincarnation skills. He didn't do that, so clearly he cares more about Buffy and Willow than surviving. It would make sense for both canon Xander and this Xander to be really worried about losing his friends. If part of the reason nuXander is afraid of losing his friends is that they might find out he's not the original Xander, well, that just makes him more afraid of losing them. Honestly, them finding out that nuXander is new would probably be a big relief if nuXander thought they'd stay friends afterwards - it would mean he wouldn't have to pretend anymore and could actually share what he remembers honestly. So being found out isn't what they're afraid if, it's losing their friendship, and Xander's role.

Or maybe nuXander inherited canon Xander's fears along with his hormones.

Okay, some thoughts:
Marcie (Girl who becomes invisible) isn't I think the most well adjusted person, her episode kinda does matter for Cordelia development so its not too bad if it happens, and maybe simply asking her if she is going to play her music at the Talent Show would be enough to make her not go invisible, maybe not but may make her slightly not almost kill us. I more want to write something to deal with not almost dying to gas but we don't have a direct response time to do so. Also I think we probably don't have any talent but Xander actually has a knack for construction doing a bit of techie stuff, to one stay out of his family's home, and two be present but not embarrass ourselves would give us a reason to be there to help somewhere.

Nightmare, I think not having to interact with another Xander is impossible, but I think that fear is one that can be talked with, and if need be Xander is the one that should respond and confront the fear first. Thematically important I feel.

Prophecy is mostly unchanged (cause its a good episode) I mean uh... because I think most of the way things go is necessary for various things to be put into motion, a second slayer rising, and the people in the library I think need to all be there or I'm concerned they can be overrun. In fact its why I'm mostly against trying to really shake up these ending episodes because they do more or less lead us towards the mostly good outcome of the End of Prophecy Girl.
