Reborn on the Moonless Seas

Convoy Part 2
"We'll escort them, of course." You state without hesitation, a fire blazing in your eyes. "We all took an oath of service. One that included protecting the innocent."

"I'm glad, nanodesu." Inazuma chirps.

"Thank God," Suzaku whispers softly. "I didn't- I… I didn't want to make that choice. Thanks, Lupa, for not making me choose." You nod at the carrier, acknowledging her statement. You're confident enough to say that the poor carrier is green as hell, or a flat-out civilian. Your blood boils a bit at that thought. Forcing a civvie into a war…

Relaxing your clenched fists, you gather your thoughts, and send a radio message back to Nature's Bounty.

"Lupa to Nature's Bounty. We'll escort you to the nearest safe harbor. Can you direct us to that harbor in exchange?"

"Glad to hear that Lupa. The Closest Safe Harbor is either Puget Sound or Anchorage, over. We're headed for Anchorage, though Puget Sound would be an acceptable destination as well. Just further out."

"Understood. We'll head for [] Anchorage (or) [] Puget Sound."

"Hey Lupa," Suzaku states, "If we're going to escort the convoy, would it be better for me and a group of escorts to draw some of their attention away? I could send air support as needed if we go that route."

You ponder on that for a moment. On one hand, splitting the party sounds like a horrible idea. On the other, escorting a fleet like this will be tough. Extremely so, to be perfectly honest. Splitting the Abyssal's attention with a tempting target like Suzaku would be something that might help with that.

  • [x] Plan Protect the squishes.
    -[x]Luca launches her scouts
-[x] Suzaku in the middle of the convoy, as if she needs to use her deck guns, we're in a very bad situation.
    -[x] DDs on the flanks.
-[x] Luca up in the front of the convoy, but still somewhat in formation, not leading.
-[x] Order Samidare to radiate and do radar sweeps
    -[x] Protect Convoy over yourselves
-[x] find out the last reported location/bearing/direction of the Abyssals.
-[x] Suzaku launches CAP. I'd rather have them ready and in the air while she's not worried about incoming shells.

You bark out orders rapidly, quickly taking charge of your little group of ships, creating a somewhat non-standard diamond formation, with Samidare radiating around d the group to perform radar sweeps every so often, the destroyer more than happy to be helpful. Meanwhile, Suzaku had finally managed to get her CAP in the air, her lack of training meaning it had taken her twice as long as it should have to accomplish.

You also take point, determined to ensure that any enemy approaching from the front would have to go through you first. Meanwhile, the convoy had provided you with the last known location of the abyssals, something you immediately took advantage of by sending a few of your floatplanes to check out.

It's smooth sailing for a while, then your scouts report that the enemy has been found and that they're advancing on your position. At least two battleships, a good five cruisers, and at least ten destroyers are steaming towards you at flank, fully intent on catching up with and exterminating you and yours.

"Lupa, want me to launch a strike package?" Suzaku asks, looking your way, "I can hit them at least once before they're in range of us!"

[] Launch a Strike Suzaku!

[] Hold onto your strike!

You also have to decide if you're going to keep going, or turn around and face the rather significant force of abyssals approaching you. You could, in fact, turn around and engage the enemy in a gunnery duel, leaving Suzaku with a token force of destroyers, or none at all, trusting that there are no submarines or unnoticed threats nearby.

Alternatively, you could trust your carrier to do what she was designed to do, and rain hell on the enemy forces from out of range.

AN: Apologies for taking so long. Voting is open until 9PM Tonight, after which it will close.

Cat dying sucks. Motivation got lost somewhere along the lines, and just came back. Updates will now resume on schedule.

First Strike
[x] Trust Suzaku
[x] Launch a Strike Suzaku!

"Do it!" You order, nodding at the carrier, who screws her eyes up in concentration, her Type 4 Arisaka barking several times as she launches a veritable horde of Ryuuseis and Reppus.

"Gambare Nanodesu!" Inazuma cheers, waving at the planes.

"You got this Suzaku!" Fubuki yells from her side, pumping her fist.

Murakumo, Samidare, and Sazanami remain silent, though they nod at you in approval. Seems the veterans of the second world war approved of your choice.

You wait tensely for several minutes as Suzaku keeps you updated on her planes' progress, until finally,

"Contact! All aircraft, commence attack! Bombers, focus on the Battleships and Cruisers, Fighters, focus your rocket attacks on the enemy destroyers!" Suzaku calls over the radio.

"Desu!" You hear her pilots' reply. You briefly notice that Suzaku's every movement is tense, the girl clearly worried about her little ones.

You stay silent, knowing that there are no words to truly describe or comfort her.

"Successful hits on the majority of enemy destroyers!" Suzaku cries with pride, "I lost a pilot on the run though…"

"How many are gone Suzaku?" You ask urgently.

"Only one. My rockets are only equivalent to HVARs, after all. And the one I got was a magazine detonation, soooo…"

You nod in response, it made sense, on self-reflection. "Next time, concentrate your attacks more." You scold lightly, something that the carrier accepts with grace, nodding.

"Sorry, my pilots interpreted my orders as spreading the attack…"

"No problem Suzaku!" Fubuki chimes in, "I hope you got the Battleships and Cruisers though!"

Suzaku smiles ferally.

"I knocked out one Battleship and Cruiser completely, magazine detonations. Another light cruiser is dead in the water, and it looks like she's completely immobile, based on what my pilots are reporting. My pilots almost whiffed the attack on the other battleship, but I managed to hit everything but two of the light cruisers."

You cheer, smiling victoriously. "Great Work!"

Suzaku blushes, smiling bashfully, "I've got a pair of Sauins tailing them, I'll continue to report. That light cruiser is probably sunk, I just want to confirm she is. Possibly the other heavy cruiser as well."

You nod. "Good work again Suzaku. Fantastic alpha strike."

"They're still gunning for us, and they'll be in range shortly though," Suzaku replies, frowning softly. "I won't have another strike package ready in time to meet them."

You nod. Suzaku is right. You're going to have to engage the Abyssals, whether you like it or not. Then again, it's only several damaged destroyers, two undamaged light cruisers, and a single damaged battleship, if Suzaku's right. You can probably take them.

QM/N: So, Suzaku rolled well. Really well. The abyssals rolling horribly helped too, but now you have to engage a smattering of destroyers, and a battleship. Suzaku stays behind by default, but the rest of the destroyers can either come with, or you can take a section of them.

Within the plan, for the Three and Two option, please vote for the two ships or three ships you're taking with you.

As a note for how damaged the destroyers are: They're at roughly ¾'s health universally. One or two good hits will take them out and Suzaku is preparing another strike as you engage. It'll come roughly 3~5 turns in, depending on how long combat takes. As for the Battleships it's at… just over ½ health. Suzaku hit it good, if only because the modifier from CV attacks in the current weather kicked in. I had initially marked it down as a miss, but forgot to add the +1 from winds. ^^'

First Shelling
"Fubuki, Murakumo, with me! We're going to engage the abyssal strike force!" You cry, turning around on your heel. Within your peripheral view, you can see the two destroyers break off and follow you, snapping off a quick salute while they're at it.

"Good luck Lupa!" Suzaku chirps, waving at you. You give an affirmative response, sending a smile back at the carrier before sailing away, towards the thick of combat. You can't help but shudder a bit, as the last time you had been in a combat zone, you'd died, unable to do anything as the bullet had gone through your skull.

"Lupa, who's our priority once we engage?" Fubuki asks, her voice cutting through the minor rut you'd gotten yourself into, "Do you want us to target the destroyers? Or do you want us to run delaying action on the light cruisers?"

"I'd prefer taking on the destroyers," Murakumo adds, "You should have plenty of firepower to take out the battleship and the cruisers, right Lupa?"

Before you can respond, you hear the telltale whistle of an incoming shell, as do Fubuki and Murakumo, and go evasive, jamming your rudder hard to port in an effort to dodge. You succeed, but barely. The abyssal battleship must have gotten lucky with it's calculations, damn it!

You return fire, your radar letting you know exactly where the fucker was, and give a cry of triumph as your shells slam into the target. You can tell, based on the way the Battleship is limping, that a few more salvos will finish her off. Alternatively, you could help clear the way for Fubuki and Murakumo to execute a torpedo salvo, especially since it looks like one of your shells totalled one of the Battleship's three main battery turrets.

[] "Fubuki, Murakumo, screen me from the destroyers! I'll take care of the battleship and cruisers!"
[] "I'll provide cover for you to do a torpedo run Fubuki, Murakumo!"

Sorry for the short update guys! However, this was the best I could do after forcing the muse to work on this for a while. As another note, I'm not going to give a date for an update anymore, since it seems to detrimentally impact my writing for this. Instead, I'll close the vote after Three Days of voting, and will publish an update ASAP after that.

Thank you once again for your patience,
Miho
