Ready to Be Replaced (A Video Game Maker Quest)

Hm, as for the witch issues I have an idea.

Make dark witches and light witches two completely separate things with completely different power systems.

Light witches draw power from using the natural laws of this world while dark witches distort the natural laws of the world for their own ends.

This makes dark witches stronger but at horrible costs to them over time, while Light Magic doesn't have any side effects and actually tends to make you healthier over time.

I'm actually talking with people in a Discord Server over this at the moment! I already had the idea of Dark and Light Witches before the update. I just didn't feel the need to bring it up during the game creation vote because it felt like something to do after the game got greenlit and where we could expand on it more.

My idea for Dark Witches is that they use the Dark Element of Magic, are able to "Drain" people/creatures/things to empower themselves further than they are at base, and that they can summon Lesser Demons as minions!

The "Drain" being mostly a narrative thing in the first game(assuming there will be sequels) to explain why the Dark Witches are so strong.

Could make a society of dragon worshippers an antagonist faction. Might even be an idea to make them Kobolds or Lizardmen, I remember the former having some elements of the subject in a few things irl, though that might be stepping on DnD's toes a bit, even if they did kind of define the tropes for a lot of the genre

Honestly, it's hard to think up of "spice" without it sounding like Typical Fantasy Slop nor ripping off, say, Final Fantasy.

But GOD, the idea of Magitech sounds cool! But on the other hand, NES era hardware. We may want to wait for the 16 bit era at least first for that one.

[X] Accept there being an actual romance subplot between the main characters. [+10 to the next Convince roll against Annabelle]

[X] Convince Silver, Davis and Annabelle for the Witch to be more in the middle. The Swordsman being a moral compass in a sense.
-[X] She wavers throughout the game between good and evil. She chooses good in the end, staying by the Swordsman's side. [Convince at 90% for Annabelle, Convince at 50% for Silver, Convince at 10% for Davis] [+10 to the next Convince roll against Annabelle]

[X] Accept the choice to make them sentient robots.
-[X] Have the protagonist be in the blind until the very end in a twist where they finally find out the truth and remember their entire journey thus far. Making the protagonist's personality be innocent until they are suddenly not.

I mostly agree with Dark, but I gotta say that the Witch ending up good thanks to the swordsman is a very compelling twist. Specially if the game has some sort of fail state where the Witch staying evil is a bad ending.

This is the NES Era. Do we HAVE the Data Room for Multiple Endings?
Nothing that wouldn't amount to something like Metroid's clear time dependent endscreen, maybe enough leeway to have some minor choice near the end of the game or save a record of how many times you've died, but nothing that's dependent on more than one factor if I had to guess

I don't know this twist seems a bit too Meta for in this era of video game and I suspect it would lead to a backlash among the audience lowering sales numbers (like have you seen how bad people reacted when ninja gaiden 3 questions ryu habia develop doubts towards killing and now picture that in a pre spec-ops the line world) So how about this.

[X] Accept the choice to make them sentient robots.
-[X] the robots didn't start out as sentient, they're merely obedient machines acting on behalf of what evils Copration/mad sciencetist who created them until one unit went rouge (wether from a programming qurk or battledamage the ninja inflicted on them) and decided to team up with the ninja to take they creator.

This is a relatively more simple story that could be spun into justafaction a player 2 or a rival turned Ally storyline.

Edit: or hell why don't we do away with the ninja fighting robots plan to begin with and make it about robot ninja rebelling against its masters

-[X] Instead of a medieval based setting, the world can be based loosely on Classical Greece with a mix of Greek Mythology. The swordsman can come from a city loosely based on Athens and its democracy (though moreso America probably). The witch could be based loosely on Medea + Ariadne, a princess who betrayed her home for a man who went on to betray her, leading to her start of darkness. The man who betrayed her could be working with the dragon in some capacity (possibly leading a cult around it). Important characters could be named after historical and mythical figures.

I like the idea of some kind of high concept magic, but it seems to me we should save that for when we're supposed to be able to cover it more in depth. As such it seems more fitting to me to differentiate by setting. The Athens being more like America is a concession to the time when they'd probably want it to be more of a glorification of America. I figure if this is a series we could move to more of a criticism of the city in later installments.

I actually like this twist!

I would like to retrate I Don't really think that twist will land. Seems to be too cerebral for what supposed to be slocky ninja brawler. Like it better to have one robot be a rival turned Ally or you could shift the protagonist to a robot ninja fighting for his freedom.

Alright, going to try some stuff for the "Spice" and see how you guys like it before I head to bed.

[X] Something to spice up the setting huh? Well...
-[X] A bit of additional lore you were thinking of that would expand once you sat down and actually started to write out the plot is that there are two different kinds of Witches. The Childhood Friend being a "Light Witch", title still pending, that utilizes the Powers of the Elements and her own Magical Strength she has to build up, while the other kind of Witch is a "Dark Witch", whom all used Dark Elemental Magic, were capable of 'draining' others of their strength to add to their own, with one having a Plan to that to the Storm Dragon with them being like, the Penultimate Boss, and also the ability to summon Lesser Demons as their minions.
-[X] For more of a setting wise spice to make it more standout, how about Trains that run on Magic? They can be how the Main Characters move travel across long stretches of land, either for the purpose of backtracking to a previous area or to reach certain key locations that they otherwise wouldn't be able to on foot for some reason due to the plot?

Decided to do Magical Trains cuz someone suggested the idea and it sounds cool. Perhaps a sequel during the 16 bit era will let us really flesh out what they look like.

Maybe next games we can add additional races but not sure, for now the stuff is more than serviceable.

Something to think about snow, should we do it gridbased? We did explained it as like chess so we could do it feasible specially given the first fire emblem was in the Famicom/NES.

Can we do a write-in on the good/evil ending for the witch where it's dependent upon choices that the player makes within the game, or is there not enough room on a NES cartridge to fit that sort of thing?

I unfortunately think that there's not enough storage for that and everything an RPG system needs on a NES Era device
