Talk with your party about each others abilities, preferences, strengths & weaknesses, favorite food and whatever else comes up. You think that everyone worked well together, but not really knowing what everyone can do or worse can't do, hurts your ability to plan and can come to bite you in the ass in the future. It would be great if everyone could know each other's general abilities so planning and fighting can be easier. You for example, are used to tanking your enemies and don't mind continue doing it for the party. As for your spear, besides stabbing people with it, it can be thrown and technically has additional reach, but you haven't quite fond a use for either. The throwing sound nice in theory, but you haven't been brave enough yet to try it out, since it makes you throw away your weapon with no guarantee that it hits anything or worse hit's something it shouldn't. Oh yeah, your favorite Food is Sushi and have thought about joing the groups searching for the first Boss.
in my vote, could I convince you and @veekie to vote for my plan?
When the party was moving away, I understand that they moved and then held action to attack the shades? So they didn't disengage? What I mean is giving shades free attacks of opportunity would have been better, I think - if you give assassins free time they'll surely throw more daggers at you, after all.
Also, I don't really know how intelligent monsters are supposed to be. But if they are intelligent, then running out of darkness after the party was a mistake. They should have just stayed inside. If the party wanted the loot - the party would have had to walk into the room again.

If you look at the first 2 rounds, the party does use a dodge/disengage action. That's why the shades have a disadvantage on their attacks for those two rounds and why they get no attacks of opportunity during them either. It's only when the party reaches the door in round 3 that they hold an action to attack.

Yeah I hear you on this, the shades here were kinda dumbasses, they probably would have enough situational awareness/be programmed to stay in the shadows. I'll just chalk up the reason why these monsters weren't that intelligent to it being the first floor, but I'll definitely keep what you said in mind. I really want the Kobold Lord to be reasonably smart and dangerous after all.
Ah also, thanks for taking the time to give advice, I really appreciate it.

Ah, that was because the two shades that were attacked had both rolled natural 1s. This resulted in me rolling on a fumble table, on which I rolled that whoever the monsters were attacking was able to get a retaliatory attack off.
If the shades hadn't rolled nat ones and/or hadn't gotten that option on the fumble table the party wouldn't have been able to attack.
Yeah you're right. By the time I realized that I hadn' put in a level up vote it had already been too long and I didn't really want to add an extra vote way after everyone had already voted/made plans.
And since obv. any major fights would have to have a set up chapter, I was just gonna add the level up to the next chapter, as overall it won't make that big of a difference.
Edit: if anyone saw that a chapter had been posted, that was an accident. A super unfinished chapter was put up and so I immediately deleted it. The finished version should be coming sometime today/tommorow.

In the dungeon treasure room, Kishi steps forward to grab the gauntlets.
This doesn't sit right with you, and you step forward to stand next to Kishi, right in front of the treasure chest. "Hold on just a second!"
"What? I called dibs!" says Kishi.
"...even I'm pretty sure that isn't how this is supposed to go. Something stupidly arbitrary like 'dibs' probably isn't the best way to distribute loot among the party. What if they do something that doesn't even help you in any way?"
Kishi's excited expression drops into something a bit more irritated. "But I-"
"I agree." comes a voice from behind. You and Kishi turn slightly to the side so you can see Sayaka. "Equipment should go to the person who can use it the best, not who wants it the most. We should go find out what it does before deciding on who it should go to."
Kishi now turns to face Sayaka completely, glaring hard at her friend.
But Sayaka refuses to back down, instead moving closer and staring up at the taller girl.
A tense silence fills the chamber, neither side dropping eye contact.
[ 1d20 - 1(Two against one) = 5 ] #Kishi Will
[ 1d20 = 18 ] #Sayaka Will
Eventually, after what seems like an eternity, Kishi shifts her gaze ever so slightly to the side. It isn't much, but the movement causes the impromptu staring contest to be broken in Sayaka's favor.
Kishi stares dejectedly at the ground and idly kicks at some dust. "Alright fine… we'll have it your way."

It was early the next day, there was not a cloud in sight and the virtual sun was shining merrily high up above.
Sayaka, Kishi and you were currently standing in front of the Tolbana armorsmith, a grizzled old man who easily towered over the three of you. You watch the man mumble to himself as he carefully examines the gauntlets that had retrieved from the dungeon the day before.
[ 1d100 = 44 ] #Item Roll
Eventually, the man puts the gauntlets onto the countertop that was between him and you.
"Yes… yes… I see now. I believe that you found something quite decent, brave adventurers! This particular piece of equipment is called the [Weak Gauntlets of Stealth]! Whoever dons this item will become more difficult to detect when attempting to slink around without notice!" he says.
Kishi gives a sigh, "...That's it? Really?"
"Do you not want these gauntlets, brave adventurers? I could buy it off of you if you wish! 3000 Col is the price I am willing to pay!" is the jovial reply from the armorsmith.
Kishi looks like a deer caught in headlights. "No! I think we'll be keeping these!" She then sighed again before continuing, "it's just that I was hoping for something better, but I guess Saka'll get some use of these things!"
Sayaka gives a shrug by your side. "I guess I could take them, if there aren't any objections."
After a moment of consideration, you say…

Afterward, the three of you split up, promising to meet up by the quest board at the center of town early tomorrow morning. Today was going to be a rest day, and by god did you need it.
The stress of everything that had happened in the past couple weeks was starting to catch up to you, a day where you didn't have to fear for your life would do you some good.
And so, today you were going fishing! What better way to relax than sit down by the waterside and just think about life!
Leaving the armorsmith, you first stop by a small tavern called 'Goosedown Hill'. There you decide to splurge a bit and buy a couple of the most expensive menu items to go, something nice to eat by the riverside.
Spent 200 Col!
Mental state improved!
You walk out of the tavern holding a small basket, filled with various foodstuffs.
Heading down to the river proper, which was bordering the western edge of town, you plop yourself down on the soft green grass. Laying the basket full of food next to you, you pull out your fishing rod from your inventory.
You take a moment to just admire the scenery. In front of you flows a massive river, shimmering a beautiful blue. Serene and peaceful, the river lazily winds its way far into the distance. A nice cool wind blows past, whistling through the picturesque green forest on the other side of the water and rustling the many patches of brilliantly vivid flowers that dot the riverside. In the distance loom the mountains that house the Labyrinth, the stark white ice at their peaks seeming to twinkle in the bright sunlight.
It looked like the fishing skill partially fell under the spear mastery skill for some reason, though you weren't really going to question it. Making yourself comfortable on a fallen log, you cast out the line into the water exactly like they always do on TV.
It goes… not great. While the act of sitting silently and admiring the beautiful scenery does wonders for your mood, nothing bites.
You let out a huge yawn, you hadn't been here for long, but the peaceful nature of your surroundings was making you really drowsy.
You close your eyes for just a second...
...but when you open them again the sky is darkening and the sun is nearing the horizon. How long did you fall asleep?!
Shaking your head, you flinch when you notice another figure sitting on the riverside nearby.
A small distance away a severe-looking man dressed in heavy plate armor sits, the spindly fishing rod being wielded in an almost daintily fashion by the man. He is staring calmly at the water, fishing seemingly by instinct.
You watch in silent awe as the man pulls up fish after fish, getting a bite almost as soon as the line hits the water.
After a few more moments, during which the man pulls up another fish, you loudly clear your throat.
The man glanced over to where you are sitting, before saying "Hello there. Enjoying the scenery? It is quite nice out here."
"Uh, yeah, I was. At least until I noticed you. How are you so good at fishing? I haven't gotten a single bite all day!"
The man stares at you for a few moments, "That should be impossible, this area has quite a high fishing rate." He pauses, seeming to contemplate something, "Pardon me for asking, but how exactly are you fishing?"
Lifting up your fishing rod you say, "Don't you just throw a line into the water and wait?"
The edges of the man's lips twitch upwards, "Did you put any bait on the rod before you cast it out?"
"...Ah, that'd probably be helpful," you say, feeling the back of your neck start heating up at your apparent forgetfulness.
As you make to pull out the small bait box that had come with the fishing rod (which you had somehow completely forgotten about), the man gives a groan and stands up to his full height.
"I think I've fished enough for today. I'll be taking my leave now." says the man as he shows his fishing rod away.
The man starts walking away, back up towards the town. You call after him, "Hey wait a second! Thanks for the help! My name's Honda, what's yours?"
Not bothering to stop his climb up the hill towards town, the man turns slightly to face in your direction. "Call me Heathcliff," he calls down to you, before reaching the top of the hill and disappearing from sight.
Met Heathcliff! Gained 1 reputation with Heathcliff!
He sees you as: another new player.
Caught 1 Bluetail, a common but delicious fish! Go cook and eat it!
- - - - -
The next day was spent exploring Tolbana even further. Idly meandering through the town, you make sure to stop by and talk to anyone interesting in your path, paying special attention to people who seemed to have equipment that was better (or cooler looking!) than the norm.
[ 1d20 = 17 ] #Exploring
[ 1d20 = 3 ] #Talking
[ 1d20 = 3 ] #Anything interesting happen?
Unfortunately, it didn't seem like anyone was interested in talking. Just about everyone brushed you off whenever you would try to strike up a conversation, and eventually you just stopped trying.
But there was a bit of silver lining. Tucked away in an older corner of the town, you find an interesting weapon shop called 'The Huntsman's Mark'. You don't really have time to examine the interior of the store in full, but the weapons that were hanging in the window outside looked plain awesome. Handing in the window was a wickedly sharp looking scythe, with a beautifully crafted thin sword of some kind right next to it. You'd definitely have to stop by here again sometime!
Discovered location: The Huntsman's Mark!

The day after you wake up extremely early, the sun was just starting to rise, casting the sky in a brilliant mix of orange and red.
You had wanted to go shopping for some time now, the desire increasing even more ever since Agil told you about the Player's Handbook.
A quick stop by the apothecary sees you picking up three more basic health potions. After all, it's better to have too many potions than not enough.
The only other place that you needed to go to was the general store, and so you make a beeline for it. There, you pick up a variety of things that you think might be useful in the days to come, the Handbook being the first and foremost of them all. You grab an extra two copies of the manual, on the off chance that Sayaka or Kishi didn't have a copy with them.
Spent 675 col and bought: x6 Basic Torches
x3 Health Potions
x1 Waybread
x1 Rope
x3 Player's Handbook
With that done, you make your way towards the center of town, taking a seat on a bench near the quest board.

While waiting for the other two members of your party, you decide you might as well glance through the book you had just picked up. Pulling it out of your inventory, you flip it open to the first page and begin to read.
There seems to be a foreword of some kind on the inside of the cover, which you immediately start reading. As you go down the passage, you get the feeling that the subject of the foreword seems a bit… familiar.
The Player's Handbook: Foreword I'd like to thank newbie, whose actions inspired me to create this guide.
While one of the main features of this guide is of course supposed to be the various details of monsters and items and more of SAO, I would like to say that it is also supposed to be something much greater than a simple compendium.
In this death game, it is inevitable that mistakes will be made, but in the current situation, any mistake is extremely dangerous.
Something that would normally be nothing important in the long run, becomes a huge detriment to people's continued time on this mortal plane. Most people just haven't had enough time to learn the intricacies of this game, as well as not having the level of common sense that more informed players would have.
Let me illustrate my point.
Imagine this hypothetical scenario: you are a new player to Sword Art Online, or god forbid video games in general.
You head off on a quest that seems perfectly easy, so easy that you decide going solo is a perfectly reasonable choice.
When you arrive at your destination, you have to fight two yellow monsters and a red one. You think this is perfectly fine as well, as you don't know any better. You don't know that even some beta testers would shy away from such a fight right now.
So you fight, and somehow manage to win.
And this repeats with another, even more dangerous encounter. A purple that you think you can take on. While you manage to win in the end, and even get a bunch of good stuff in the process, what you don't realize is how this warps your perception of this game.
Without a more seasoned player to smack the sense out of you, you might continue to take similar risks.
After all, why not? You did it once and you lived. You could do it again.
And so you do.
Over and over and over. Until you die of course. And you inevitably would, no one's luck lasts forever.
But in the end, I don't know you. Maybe you wouldn't care if you lived or died. Maybe you know the dangers and continue to ignore them for your own personal reasons.
However, even if I don't know you, I do know something. Something important.
When you go out there, risking your life in dangerous situations, you aren't just gambling your own life away. The people out there that care about you, however small that amount may be, their lives are also been gambled alongside your own.
Won't they be hurt if something happens?
Won't they feel like some part of them has died as well?
Your actions, the choices you make, affect more people than just your own. Remember that.
But I digress. In the end, it is up to you for whether or not you will follow the advice that I have written here in this book.
Thank you for reading my little rant and please please stay safe.
...Now you wouldn't exactly call yourself a betting man. But you were reasonably sure that you knew exactly who the 'mysterious author' of the Player's Handbook was.
Flipping through the rest of the book, you could see that there were sections of 'tips and tricks' in between the standard pages of generic information that you had expected. It looked like Argo really was genuine in this attempt of hers, though you really didn't know what that meant about her character beyond the most basic of assumptions.
Sighing, you push those thoughts to the back of your mind and flip back to the front, starting to read parts of the book that you think are important.
[ 1d20 + 3(Highly Accurate) = 17 ] #Info on Great Frenzy Boar Quest
[ 1d20 + 3(Highly Accurate) = 17 ] #Info on Field Fiends Quest
[ 1d20 + 3(Highly Accurate) = 15 ] #Info on House Spider Quest
You learn a bit about the Great Frenzy Boar Hunt Quest, as well as the Field Fiends quest. At your party's current level, neither seemed too dangerous, so you didn't focus that much time on them.
While the image of the monster from [The House Spider] quest was covered in a large red 'COMING SOON', you learned a bit more about the quest itself.
As the quest giver had said before he passed out, the monster was extremely weak to fire, and having it readily on hand would make a somewhat difficult fight much easier. The guide went on further to say that while the monster was fairly slow and clumsy, it hit like a truck.
A small map showed that like the spider would be lurking in a field some ways to the east of Tolbana, and that 'you'll know it when you see it.'
The recommended way to deal with the spider was to have one person distract it, while other people would attempt to light on fire from blindspots near its sides.
You then move on to read about the 'Sick Sister' quest that you had seen upon a quest board. However you are sorely disappointed as almost the entire page on the quest is covered in another 'Coming Soon'.
There is a bit of information though. The general idea of the quest was that you would be requested to retrieve a rare medicinal plant from deep within the 'Darkwood Forest' that took up much of the western edge of the floor. The quest paid out quite handsomely, but the trek through the forest was quite dangerous if you weren't wary. Once again, having fire readily available was recommended.
Just as you finish reading the last sentence of the page you are on, you hear footsteps walking up to you. Looking up, your other two party members are standing in front of you.
You stand up and stretch, "Guess we should get started then, huh?"
- - - - -
For the majority of the next week, the party speeds through as many quests as possible.
[ 1d20 + 2(Higher Level Party) + 1(Player's Handbook) = 17 ] #Kill the Great Frenzy Boar
The Great Frenzy Boar was lurking in a meadow a ways away from town, near the base of the mountain range that took up most of the northern edge. It was a pretty long trek to find the thing, but once you got there, it was a piece of cake. While the monster could have been difficult if you had gone alone, the fact that there were three players versus a single monster made the fight much easier than it had any right to. All in all, it was an incredible success.
Congratulations! You killed the Great Frenzy Boar! You and your party members gained 1000 col each!
You and your party members gained 500 exp each!
The Field Fiends quest went much the same, with the information in the Player's Handbook being somewhat useful in combating the quest monsters.
Congratulations! You completed the Field Fiends Quest! You and your party members gained 1500 col each!
You and your party members gained 500 exp each!
(These two quests managed to push you to the next level once again, now being at a respectable level 8. You still had three points left over from the level up you had gotten from the dungeon quest, so adding the three new points from the recent level up gave you six full points to put into whatever attribute you wished.)

Ironically, the easiest quest of the bunch: the herb gathering one, went the worst. While the actual fighting wasn't difficult at all, you couldn't for the life of you find sixty (to split three ways) medicine herbs in any reasonable amount of time. An entire day was wasted traipsing across the southern half of the first floor. Though it wasn't a complete loss, as you were able to spend some time getting to know your party.

[ 1d20 + 2(???) = 18 ] #Kishi Reaction
[ 1d20 - 2(???) = -1(Nat 1.) ] #Sayaka Reaction
"Y'know, I've been thinking," you say as you, Sayaka and Kishi search endlessly for those precious, precious medicinal herbs.
Sayaka glances in your direction, "I'm so proud of you." she snarks before returning to look around for herbs.
"Ha. Ha. How original" you drawl out, before switching to a more serious tone, "But in all seriousness, while we've done pretty awesome as a team so far, I honestly think that we don't really know each other that well, both in terms of personality and skills."
Kishi bounces up behind you, "Yeah! Friends are supposed to all kinds of things about other friends! That's like, what being a friend means!"
You smile at the blue-haired girl, "Exactly! In fact, as a show of good faith, I'll go first!"
Gathering your thoughts, you begin "As you know, I fight with a spear." You hold up your weapon. "Theoretically this thing can be thrown, but I've been too scared to actually try that mid-combat. Literally tossing away your main weapon just seems like a bad idea to me."
You then gesture to your armor and shield. "I'm currently set up to act as a tank, and I'm fine with continuing to act as the party tank for the foreseeable future. I've been having some thoughts about joining the boss hunt and my favorite food is sushi!"
Sayaka suddenly stands up from where she was poking at some grass and turns to face you, "What was that last thing?"
"...My favorite food is sushi?"
"No! Before that! The boss hunt thing! Are you an idiot?!" she says.
You scowl at the much shorter girl, "No I'm not! Why does everybody just assume that I'm stupid and don't think things through! I have and I'm completely serious about this!"
"Well, I'm serious too! Serious about living! Your suicidal ass isn't going to drag me and Kishi into any more danger than absolutely necessary! No way! No how!" Sayaka retorts.
Kishi now butts into the argument, "...I dunno about that Saka. Maybe joining the floor boss fight isn't the worst of ideas."
"...!" Sayaka stares at Kishi in shocked silence, before shifting a glare of pure loathing at you. "Y-you may have convinced her to go along with your harebrained scheme, but I'm not falling for it!"
And with that Sayaka storms off in a random direction, muttering some surprisingly creative insults about your person to herself.
After a few heartbeats of silence, Kishi begins to talk, still staring at the slowly shrinking form of her friend. "...Honda, you've gotta understand, Saka isn't the best when it comes to the whole people thing." She lets out a deep sigh. "She misinterprets a lot of stuff and gets fired up real easy, especially when she thinks she's in the right of things."
Kishi runs a hand through her hair and her shoulders sag a bit. "Can you just wait for her to cool some and then, I dunno, just try to talk to her or something? Please?"

The next day, Sayaka, Kishi and you are wandering through an open field, searching for this supposed 'House Spider'.
And then, as you crest a slight hill in the field, you see it.
"...Oh my god ...Kayaba ...Why." you hear Kishi whisper by your side.
You facepalm at the sight of the monster. It was a literal house spider.
Brick and mortar shifts and creaks as the creature shuffles its way across the field.
In front of you, a cozy-looking small one-story house is walking on eight gigantic wooden spider legs. Eight small circular windows seemed to make up its eyes, with the open doorway functioning as some sort of weird mouth. There was smoke drifting lazily out of the chimney on the roof and you could even faintly smell the aroma of roast chicken in the air.
Now you knew why the handbook and the quest giver had expressly specified that the monster was weak to fire, it was literally made mostly out of wood.
Sayaka lets out a stifled snort next to you, but her face goes completely blank when you turn to look at her. "What? Something on my face?"
Holding back from a sigh, you look back at the slowly approaching monster. "Let's just kill this abomination against all that is good and right in the world ASAP. Now, I've got a semblance of a plan..."

Did I set up an entire quest ingame over a shitty pun? Why yes, yes I did.
Were the in-between cuts okay or should I try to make them more smooth? There were a bunch of different things happening in this chapter so I had to jump a bunch, but I think I kept it fairly linear.
I'm thinking about posting chapters/excerpts from 'The Player's Handbook' and quests that I kinda glossed over as side-stories, we'll see.
Also, Jesus was this a long chapter. There was just so much to do. I def left out some things here and there, ask me about them and I'll either add them in or just explain what would/had happened.

Stats rise so slowly by usage in canon SAO that it just plain isn't worth it. You can get far more out of pursuing more level ups and harder quests than stats.
...I think Honda will look good in white. I really want to join the KoB when he makes the guild. Hell, we could be one of his founding members.
Heathcliff only planned on betraying the Clearers when they got basically to the end so he could be the final boss. He's the best guy to be with right up until the end.
That house spider sounds like something out of a Harry Potter book. I think that we could reasonably handle this monster though. Something that big on the lower levels must be extremely slow but strong. We can just go for hit and run tactics while hitting it with fire stuff.

We've currently got the highest AC, and HP too I think. Just dodge the entire time, probably, and let the other two do damage. Maybe switch with Kishi for a bit if our HP gets too low.
I think we should ask her to explain why she thinks that clearing is so likely to get us all killed (this lets her vent, and shows that we aren't dismissing her concerns lightly), and tell her we don't want to put anyone here in unnecessary danger. Possibly add something about how we want to get a lot stronger before we do anything in the main dungeon.
You facepalm at the sight of the monster. It was a literal house spider.
Brick and mortar shifts and creaks as the creature shuffles its way across the field.
A cozy-looking small one-story house is walking on gigantic wooden spider legs in front of you. Eight small circular windows seemed to make up its eyes, with the open doorway functioning as some sort of weird mouth. You could even see smoke drifting lazily out of the chimney on the roof.
On second thought, let's use javelins to draw aggro, and dash instead of dodging. That thing probably hits HARD. We should only switch to dodging if it catches up to us. Probably still let the other two light it on fire.
[X] Plan: Toast some S'mores!
-[X][Loot] "...yeah, Sayaka should have them."
-[X][Level-Up] +2 Str, +4 Con
-[X][Talk!] "...Okay, give me ten minutes and then I'll go try."
-- [X][Talk!] Ask Sayaka to explain what her reservations are exactly against doing the boss hunt. Listen and let her vent. After she's done, tell her that we don't want to put the party in unnecessary danger, and we wanted to level up and get a lot stronger before going in anyway. If she or Kishi don't want to go in then we just won't go, having a member of the party not want to be there is a recipe for disaster.
-[X][Fight!] Honda will draw its attention by throwing javelins, while Kishi and Sayaka hide and/or flank around to its blind spots. They'll use torches to light it on fire(distribute torches and flint beforehand if necessary), while Honda keeps its attention (use Dash to keep away from it, switch to Dodge if it catches up to you. Use javelins to keep its attention as necessary). Once its burning merrily, everyone uses their sword skills and normal attacks to finish it off.
Not sure if we should also have Sayaka break some legs or not.
Unfortunately, right now not being squished by a house takes priority over being a better striker, so Con is important.
Is a plan vote okay?
Yeah sure, but can you add a '-' before each vote that you want included in the plan? Cause rn all those votes are being counted separately in the counter.
