Quest to Become a Hero

[X] Spar with a Golem Assistant, 20 GP.
-[X]Stamina& partner permitting, spar with various weaponry, to see which one you prefer.

[X] Request a spar with a similarly ranked Adventurer, Free.

I think the Self-learning and the golem assistant works better if we actually know how to use a dagger decently and are refining the techniques.
When we're coming at it with a half-ass of skill, another adventurer is more likely to give useful feedback.

[X] Self Learning, Free.
-[X] Spar with your Companion.
--[X] Velvet is limited to tackling, no biting, and keep your dagger sheathed. Safety first.

This option gives both us and Velvet EXP, so I like it the most.

We might be able to pass the knowledge and skill exams but its the combat exams that I am worried about.

Liara explicitly states that she thinks we can pass the exam easily. This was before we nabbed the Body and Quick to Act Traits, and we're planning on leveling up before we take the exam so that we can get two more Traits/skills. We'll be fine. Besides, we might as well try. If we fail, then we can start training with a vengeance, and if we succeed we get access to Porcelain Rank stuff, meaning better weapons, better classes, and more GP from Quests to buy said classes with.

And guys, while I'd love to get a better weapon, we have to keep in mind that we need 75 Silver to keep Velvet once she hits Level 4. We need to start saving for that now so that we have enough when we need it.

Actually, the current license covers Level 4 monsters. It's either Level 5 or Level 8 where we need the higher license.
"Well, there you go Mr. Stitch. The Lord's Office charged the funds on your card, processed it, and then gave permission to create a Grade D Companion License which is what you have now. With that you are permitted to bring all creatures at Level Four or lower within the premises of the town, up to a maximum of four monster companions that is.

In order to upgrade to a Grade C License and gain the right for Level Eight and lower monsters as well as a group of to ten in size you will need to directly visit the Lord's Office and pass a test. A fee of 75 Silver will need to be paid for every attempt at the test as well, so make sure you're prepared if you don't wish to waste money.
Maybe after Level 4, we can keep Velvet, but she has to stay out of town, and at Level 8, we have to get the Grade C License in order to keep her at all? I'm not sure. Clearly, we have to figure out camping by the time Velvet hits Level 5.

We can delay how quickly she gets there by choosing to share less XP with her, but I'd like to get her to Level 3 after we've fed her Ironhide Boar meat so that she can get stronger and less likely to be killed in a fight. I'm also hoping that the MC will be able to earn more money per mission as he moves up the ranks.

Edit: Now that I'm rereading it, I realize that Grade D is Level 4 and below, Grade C is Level 8 and below, Level B is presumably Level 12 and below, etc. so we need to get the license before Velvet hits Level 5 IF we want to bring her in town.

I do think the license just covers whether we can bring her to town. I want it, because having her with us is great and we can do group training, but we could just leave her at a secure campsite with meat so she doesn't get killed by a newbie adventurer. That's one reason I really us to get good basic hunting skills, to feed her.

Side note: we could dominate another beast- do we want to try to get another rabbit or a wolf? A wolf would drastically boost our attack power.

I wouldn't mind getting a wolf but not right now. A wolf would cost more money to feed, and I'm not sure if the inns would be as willing to let one stay. We should get hunting and survival skills first so that we can camp outside of town and hunt for enough food to feed both minions. Fortunately, Green-pelt Wolves rarely form packs and usually travel alone or with only one other wolf.

On another note, the MC's monster knowledge skill is:
Monster Knowledge (Relgar Township, Beginner, 45%) - You've memorized basic information provided on Vicious Rabbits, Giant Rats, Slimes, Monstrous Corn, Green-pelt Wolves, and Forest Bears.
Taming a Vicious Rabbit hasn't increased that. I'm wondering if there are more monsters we should read up on to increase the skill. If so, we might want to do that before camping outside of town. Though it might just be that the book only had basic information, and better information is available once the MC moves up the ranks.

Here's a question for the hivemind - what other possible hidden features might the guild have? We know about classes and about the guild trade window. Might there be a leaderboard feature to our guild card, listing other locals? A chat feature? I'm just trying to figure out what we could ask about that might unlock further things.

I had really been hoping that lodging and food were hidden features. :(

There's probably something about parties looking for members, but I'm not sure how to phrase that question to the receptionist. Also, most of the MC's work doesn't require a party. The Vicious Rabbits quest is the only one I can think of that might need a party. We could try researching parties to learn how they work.

We fed Velvet quite a few Vicious Rabbits right? Looks like my speculation on our pet being special in learning skills by eating the meat of monsters was right.

A Sparring Match, Take One
[X] Spar with a Golem Assistant, 20 GP.

After deciding on your choice you quickly tap on the option to spar with a Golem Assistant, the cost immediately deducted from your account. Instantly the screen changes to inform you that a sparring Golem would arrive shortly while the attendant one stepped back before falling still again. It doesn't take long for you to notice a continuous heavy thudding which, upon turning to the source of it, turns out to be a nondescript humanoid figure.

It's body appears to be made of metal, no notable features adorn it and even its articulation seems incredibly rudimentary yet the sheer weight of it is evident from the noise it makes walking.

"Somehow the Guild continues to surprise me at every turn."

You mutter before moving to pull the dagger from one of the many pockets in your robes, casting a nervous glance to Velvet who has become perfectly still beside your feet. By the time the golem arrives you are already stood at the far side of the arena along with Velvet, the golem lazily dropping down into the lowered ring shaking the entire area. Almost instantly the golem turns to you and an emotionless, grating voice comes forth.

"Sparring Assistant Number Thirty-Three ready for combat. This unit is designed to prevent severe injuries, but will still engage in full force combat. You need not fear permanent injury during sparring, starting combat strength set to approximately Wood Rank. Say 'Commence Training' to begin the sparring session at any time, and use the phrase 'Halt' to immediately end this unit's combat routines."

After that it falls silent, leaving you to unsheathe your dagger and poise yourself for the coming match. You take a deep breath before calling out,

"Commence training."

---

Velvet makes the first move, her small form lunging at the hulking metal opponent in a crude attempt to slam her entire body into it. However, her attack is met with a surprisingly swift punch from the golem that sends her flying to the side. You take advantage of the opening presented to you at that moment.

Driven by the information you inherited from the Dominated writing, a sweeping cut slides across the golems arm before you rear back and stab at its chest. Sparks scatter everywhere as you recoil back, the golem's fist scrapping across your chest while an uppercut from him is knocked aside by Velvet's barreling figure.

With the golem off balance, you seize the advantage and then stab twice at the back of the golem's head. Sparks burst forth from where your blows land, obvious dents and cuts forming at the force of the blow.

What follows is another glancing blow to your chest from the stooped assistant, stinging pain radiating from your chest. You ignore it and redouble your efforts, another pair of blows landing across the golem's chest leaving behind more cuts. It's at that moment that the golem freezes in place, the voice speaking once more.

"Current combat strength deemed inefficient for training, releasing limits to raise strength. Approximate current combat strength: Porcelain. Please prepare. "

You adjust the grip on your dagger, beads of sweat trickling down your face as you contemplate how to proceed.

I think this is going well! I'm glad we can fight an average wood rank opponent, I think this indicates our combat test will go well.

Our dagger skill is already 42% of the way to beginner, let's keep going.

Oh.
We should take that test then!
But for now...

We've got our dagger mastery down fairly well, now I want to experiment with other weaponry, and for that matter write-in a few tactics to give John here something of a starting point for axe and shield skill.

Given that it's guild property I'd rather not try it- we're not the first kid with Domination powers to try our luck here I bet, and I find the idea that the Guild has some sort of counter-measure to Domination very likely, to say the least.

Oh.
We should take that test then!
That's what I was thinking at first, but then I remembered that the MC is currently under the effects of a Dominate Writing buff, and we don't know if the Advancement Exam has precautions to detect or cancel out temporary buffs.

We're presumably not going to be switching between a dagger and a hand-axe during the combat test so I'd like to actually get Dagger Mastery, Beginner down beforehand, especially if we won't have the Dominate Writing buff to depend on. If we go on the Monstrous Corn quest, then it should be safe enough to test out the hand-axe & shield combo there. In fact, we'll probably want the shield for when the monsters explode at the end.

It sounds like John isn't using his shield at all, just keeping it on his back while using the single dagger for offense and relying solely on Evasion for defense. The lack of any Shield skill progress supports this. Do we really have to specify using it? There's no reason not to automatically equip it in our off hand.

Thanks, also the shield was foregone because the general consensus was to get Evasion ranked up first, so John focused on dodging instead of attempting both. He's a complete newbie at physical tasks and combats. Kind of hard to multitask dodging, blocking, and then attacking with a dagger when you barely understand the basics.
