I don't remember a time when there were stars in the sky. I don't remember the time when the air was breathable and the ground wouldn't crack beneath your feet. I don't remember not having to scavenge for food and water. I don't remember a time when the people around you were something more then monsters by necessity. I don't remember not having to kill to survive. I don't remember a time when the world wasn't falling apart.
What I do remember is my sister. I remember her smile, her laugh, her kindness. I remember when she used to play with me and read to me and just spend time with me. I remember when she would hold me close and make everything okay. I remember her.
And I remember how she was taken from me.
I remember how The Devil came into our lives and controlled us. She was obsessed with my sister and so she made a gilded cage for her. A cage where everyday was perfect, where nothing went wrong and no one aged and the same perfect days would play out again and again and again while the rest of the world burned and rotted and died a slow death. I remember how she turned my parents into mindless puppets. I remember how one day the Devil simply forgot about me and so I ceased to exist in that happy little world of theirs.
I don't remember how I survived but I did. I survived and grew and learned how to live in a world that was dying. I don't remember how long I lived like that, how many years I spent in hell, but I do remember eventual meeting… something. Something that made me an offer. I could have power, strength, and magic. I could have the ability to make things right again, to fix things. All I had to do was one simple task, one little thing. I accepted.
My name is Tatsuya Kaname and I'm going to kill the Devil.
You wake up on something cold, hard and flat. This isn't really all that special seeing as how you've been sleeping on the ground for years. What's special is that when you open your eyes and look up you see that the sky is blue. Blue! Not the horrific shade of purple that means that the deadly red sun is out, not the slate gray of the acid clouds, not the pitch black starless void of night, but blue. You feel something warm on your cheeks and you realize that you're crying.
You try and figure out what's going on and then the memories come rushing back, fragmented and missing some pieces but enough for now. The meeting with that strange little creature, so similar to the Devil's spies but not quite the same. The offer it gave you and how you accepted. A brief pain in your chest. It's parting words. "And there you go! Everything you need to kill the Devil. Well, sort of. You see you can't actually kill the Devil, not as she is now. She does control the entire universe after all. However, if you were to kill her before she became the Devil, then you might have a chance. So back in time you go! Thank you for your contribution to the fight against the Devil!" And then everything went black.
You can hardly believe it. You couldn't have been sent back in time, it's impossible. But the evidence is all around you. The sky is blue, the clouds are fluffy and white, the sun is yellow and the air is fresh and clean. You stand up and take a look around. You're on the roof of a building. A quick look off the edge shows you people walking about, cars on the roads, children laughing and playing. It's too much for you to take in at once and you sit back down.
You take a few deep breaths and try to gather your thoughts. Okay, you've been sent back in time so you can kill the Devil before she ends the world and, more importantly, takes away your sister. Simple problem, simple solution. Minor complication in that most of your memories are either incomplete or simply gone. Like what the Devil actually looks like. On the bright side, it looks like that creature kept up its side of the bargain. You feel stronger, faster and healthier than you have in years. You can also feel a sort of power inside of you as well. You guess that must be the magic the creature said you'd have.
After taking a few more minutes to acclimate to you're new situation you decide that you should probably get going. The Devil isn't going to murder herself after all. You get up and dust yourself off before realizing that your clothes are different. They seem to have been replaced with much nicer versions of what you were wearing before. You coat, once a ratty, threadbare thing that could barely keep the cold out, is now a black leather coat with a hood that reaches your knees. You shirt seems to be made of silk or something and is bright red, whereas before it was so dirty you didn't know what color it was. You jeans… are still jeans. Very high quality jeans though. And finally your shoes, if you could call some pieces of cloth tied together with a piece of card board as a sole shoes, have been replaced with a solid pair of boots, also black.
You shake your head and berate yourself of being distracted by something as simple as clothes. You have things that need doing! Finding either your sister or the Devil would be a good start. But where should you start looking?
[] Your old home? You think you remember where that is.
[] You faintly remember your sister leaving the house everyday to go … somewhere? Her friends went there too. Perhaps if you look for a place with large amounts of teenagers you might find something.
[] Just wander around randomly. Hopefully you'll find something.
[] You sense… something. Something menacing.
AN: So this is an idea that's been bouncing around my head for a while but I wasn't sure whether I wanted it to be a quest or a fanfiction. I'm going to try it out as a quest but if it doesn't work out I'll make it a fanfiction. Write in's are welcome and so is constructive criticism on my writing. Have fun!
