That fact isn't fun at all!:(

Hm, well...

That wasn't fun at all!

Fun fact: My "fun facts" are called such because I have fun telling them to people, not because they're intended to be fun for the audience. :V

I rest my case. :V

Man, Maiko is fucking smart!

She's also had seven-ish years to figure stuff out, an adult mentor and supportive team encouraging her for the first several years, and "how does magic stuff work" is the primary purpose of her grimoire so she had a head start on a lot of stuff.

But yeah, she's also pretty smart!

Also, I can't help but wonder why the hell would anyone try to invade this territory when Yui exists. I mean, with someone like her, your not gonna have much of a window of time before she becomes too powerful to be dealt with.

It's not like meguca ever make terrible and self-destructive life choices, right? :V

That said, there are plenty of things Yui has little to no defense against at the moment. Shinobu's wish, for instance. Stealth and mind-fuckery are very nearly hard counters to Yui and will be for the foreseeable future.

You've got a real good point there. Though~, I've been wondering if there is anything you have to share about Aokigahara, Echo?

There's always the "send them to the other side of the country in a crate" option, though the dog makes that difficult.

Two issues.

1. Japan isn't that big with modern transportation methods. Is there anywhere to send them that they can't take a train back? Heck, the world isn't that big with modern transportation.

2. It requires a small pulse of magic to reactivate them. Just touching the soul gem to the body isn't quite enough. I'm going by the narration in this specific quest for that. Echo can correct if I'm wrong. So what magical girl is going to wake them up on the other end?

Also, a general question based on "recent events" in the quest.

How weird is it that Kyubey actually took sides in a magical girl fight? It went beyond making its presence known. It actually gave her tactical information that made the fight easier and then practically anointed her queen of the the area openly to the hostile magical girls. That seems really, really unusual. I'm surprised that there wasn't more shock from everyone, actually.

Frankly, I think Yui should think about playing that one up. Every magical girl knows Kyubey. Some hate it, but many still love or respect or at the very least fear it. What every ruler craves is legitimacy.

Yui can tell people that she's in charge of the area not just because she's the strongest but because Kyubey said she should be in charge. For a lot of magical girls that will carry weight. Who knows how many of the invaders might back down from that fact alone, because they're worried about Kyubey's disapproval?

IIRC, Yui's ultimatum was "leave or I'll make you leave." This is making them leave. It shows we're serious without actually killing them.

Plus, if we send them to Hokkaido with no cash, it's gonna take a while for them to get back anyway. Plenty of time to think on whether they really want to come back for another round.

Pretty sure it'd be child's play for Maiko to rig up a device that does that on a timer.

Well, given the premises of the PMMM setting it's obviously really fucking Witch infested like whoa.

I don't have any specific plans for it beyond that. It's not even in one of the Kanto prefectures so it's literally not on the map as far as my current plans for the quest are concerned.

Are you sure? I don't remember saying that... in fact, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that Kaede trained her dog to retrieve her Soul Gem and wake her up if she gets disconnected.

Well thank Madokami for you having no plans beyond that. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if a Dyaus Pita of all things happens to be one of the things that can be found there.

Fun fact: Dumping corruption into a person's soul and then killing them is currently the only way Maiko knows of to permanently erase grief!

Already figured that out. It'd be a nifty way to execute death row convicts. Aside from being basically torture.

Maiko is pretty sure that's exactly what would happen. It's one of the things on her "experiments that would be too unethical to perform but DAMN it would be so cool" list. This is also related to why she's fascinated by the legends surrounding Big W and why she wants to do science to Lorelei's seed.
Well, if we needed to break the system for some reason or die doing it....would Yui choose Sublimation? Instead of hostiles, your entire doomed group fuses to say...fight Walpurgisnacht.

For a lot of magical girls that will carry weight. Who knows how many of the invaders might back down from that fact alone, because they're worried about Kyubey's disapproval?

Or how many hate QB enough to double their effort to see this BURN.

He's just helping Yui because things are going to collapse in a way that lowers contract rates and production

BTW, given the long hiatus, before getting too far into a debate over what to do with Kaede and Naoko, I'd recommend rereading the previous discussion to avoid rehashing too much.

Then again, I don't know if the previous discussion got much beyond most people agreeing that killing is bad, so...

Actually, how about I give a quick summary of why it's a difficult decision:

Kaede:
  • Won't accept anything that separates her from her dog.
  • Her dog is already pretty old, so spending long periods of time disconnected risks it dying while she's out.
  • The dog being killed or dying while she's disconnected is very likely to make her witch out.
  • Maiko is well aware of all this and will strongly resist any course of action that risks Kaede witching out in front of Yui.
  • Kicking her out of town with no teammates is probably a death sentence, and if she doesn't die, she'll probably end up killing other meguca.
  • Rehabilitation was discussed before but letting her stay in Nagamioka is probably off the table now that Yumi is staying.
  • Long-term imprisonment without disconnection is possible, but a lot of effort for no reward other than not being indirectly responsible for her death.

Naoko:
  • Won't accept anything that leaves her alone without "allies" who won't ditch her.
  • She's a regenerating berserker, so Yui alone probably can't force her to do anything she doesn't want to do.
  • As such, if she's not dead or disconnected, your choice essentially boils down to "who gets stuck with her?"
  • Sending her away with Kaede is viable.
  • Keeping her around is also viable. On the bright side, free healer! On the not-bright side, putting up with Naoko indefinitely.

I'll also repeat this from the previous discussion:

The best chance of this ending without any immediate deaths is to send them somewhere in the Tokyo area where they know how things work locally and can carve out a territory more easily via intimidation than murder.

Kazamino would be a good bet, for instance. With the added benefit of being on the other side of Tokyo from Nagamioka.

No comment on whether the latter option specifically will result in Kaede and Naoko experiencing Kyouplomacy.

Welp...

I'm stumped. I have absolutely no idea what to do with these two.

Echo gave us the easy solution. Drop them both off in Kazamino (plus dog), wash our hands of the matter.

Leave Kaede a message saying we can't guarantee we'll be able to collect her dog next time and she'll likely be too scared to come back. Naoko won't do anything that leaves her alone without allies, so she won't come back without Kaede. Done.

Shinobu's wish, for instance. Stealth and mind-fuckery are very nearly hard counters to Yui and will be for the foreseeable future.

... wait can't we see Stealth via Magic Vision? And can't we also throw LOADS OF MAGIC at Mind-Fuckery to counter that as well?

We just have to train Yui so she has Magic-vision going all the time...?

Yes. It would be irreversible and the original separate personalities would no longer exist, but yes.
Wait, is the process like a mean, or like an increment? If a hundred thousand magical girls joined this way, would the resultant girl be a normal combination of all the personalities, or a super-girl with the sum of all the knowledge/experience/potential?

As for Naoko, she's a self-destructive *ss, but funnily enough she's the easiest one to control cooperate with. We just need to pretend we will really need her for the coming conflict.

"Our first, indirect, problem is the Kanagawa situation. The area around Kawasaki has been getting steadily more lethal in recent years ever since someone laid claim to a huge chunk of territory and blocked off any gradual territory shifts to the southwest."

"Someone being greedy?" Maiko asks.

Yumi shakes her head. "Worse: Someone being idealistic."

You pout. "What's wrong with that?"

"Supposedly she's difficult to work with, but rumor has it she was on good terms with Kisaragi, so it's hard to say." Maiko frowns at that, but Yumi continues speaking. "Point is, nobody wants to deal with her and everything between her and Tokyo is overcrowded. Means we can expect more refugees like Minamori. A lot more."
Mami?

It's good to see this back! I was bitterly resentful sad to think that it had died off, as it's my favorite PMMM quest on the board, bar none.

Funny thing is I'm vaguely tempted to start a second, low-effort quest of some sort just to have something to write while waiting for votes here. :V
There is still an omake for this quest left sitting at part 1/2. You could write omakes all day between actual updates!

In any case. I have no strong opinion on Kaede and Naoko's fates except that I don't want Yui to both decide to kill them and have someone else do it for her, as that feels like it would be serious personal weakness and just opening her up to emotional problems without any of the accompanying hardening. Keeping herself clean but having a hatchetman is just not where I want Yui taken, even if her personality profile means that personally killing people is emotionally devastating. Leaving them alive in some fashion seems vaguely preferable simply from a point of practicality, on those grounds.

But I'm willing to let other people hash that out. There are other matters which can be addressed, like the fact that we're surrounded by sad people. I can ramble through a vote for that instead... and for some other things. It's overly wordy and probably not exactly one update's worth of rambling, but votes can always use some tweaking, so no matter.

[x] Talk about more stuff with Maiko, Minami, and Yumi.
-[x] Explain that it's becoming increasingly clear to you that forging a large number of girls who have magical superpowers, every reason to distrust one another, and diverse sets of uniquely heart-wrenching emotional issues into a tightly-knit set of friends who trust one another implicitly and can stand together against all that the world might throw at them while acting as each others' reliable emotional support will be harder than anime implies. Particularly when there's no time to give every teammate a character arc where you gradually discover their personal problems and help them become a happier person who also likes you more while giving them handy powerups.
--[x] You need to get friendships, build personal loyalty, and create a sense of unity across your group in spite of its large numbers; practical reasons for cooperation and coexistence aren't enough. Today was a good demonstration of both why that's important by watching your opponent's group disintegrate and where we stand at the moment by the fact that we could get only about half the city's magical population to show up and actually help.
--[x] Your personal social superpowers of adorableness, optimism, and repression may not be enough to handle this on their own unless applied with delicacy, insight, and finesse. Therefore, you are delegating coming up with plans containing those qualities (sadly absent in your own skillset) to your loyal advisors. Maiko, Yumi, Minami, devise cunning schemes for short-term team-building and medium- to long-term happiness maintenance.
-[x] Explain to Yumi that Maiko and Minami combine to form our awesome intelligence team, though Asami helped a bit too, recently. In light of their incredible stalking powers, no secrets are safe! Except the ones belonging to people that don't have nearby trees tall enough to let someone see into their bedroom windows. The point is, Yumi should tell them everything she knows about everyone she knows at some point soon. The files they gave you earlier today were fantastic and you want more of them before every fight.
--[x] You'll want to get information from the city's new residents, as well, but that can wait a bit.
[x] Brainmail Chou and let her know how the fight turned out.
-[x] No more than one plant pun every few sentences. You are a paragon of restraint.
-[x] Bring up the city's new potential residents. In particular, Kiyomi seemed pretty enthusiastic to hear that she was in town. Apparently they got along like... two peas in a pod?
[x] Brainmail Shinobu and let her know how the fight turned out.
-[x] If she has any interest in being introduced around, you can make arrangements.
-[x] Or you can talk about anime. You understand that she is a woman of discerning taste and keen insight in these matters.
[x] Brainmail Koharu and let her know how the fight turned out.
-[x] Mention that you can come by in person so that you can perform a full dramatization using appropriate sound effects and hand gestures if her parents could be wrangled into letting that happen. What are her thoughts on parent-wrangling?

Oh, the Kaede Naoko thing. *groan*

From what I recall, we were going to send Kaede into exile with her dog into Chiba (? I think) where she had a good chance of survival, would likely be able to join a group, and we could check to make sure she wasn't doing anything bad.

The real problem was Naoko, who is incredibly toxic, probably wouldn't do what we said, and would likely make other girls' lives a misery if we forced her to leave. There were some options discussed regarding Shinobu's power - but we don't really have any real options at this point in time. So my proposal is the following:

If we kill Naoko, we're compromising on Yui's idealism. Naoko herself became seriously messed up partly as a result of actions she couldn't control, and partly by using that as a justification to abuse others.

Speaking more pragmatically, we lose access to a potentially valuable healer.

So, I'm suggesting we leave her on ice. Not indefinitely. We'll pick a period - say three weeks, at which Yui will sit down with a couple of people and say "Okay, do we have any alternative options for dealing with Naoko at the moment?". And potentially deal with other prisoners too, if we catch any other seriously messed up meguca.

During the period she's on ice, she'll get woken up every couple of days (maybe a week if we're at war and there's no-one available) for an hour or two to eat, talk and potentially read or watch TV.

I'm hoping that being treated somewhat humanely will ultimately help us deal with Naoko; if not, we at least remind Yui and others she's human.

This is potentially policy for various other messed up magical girls we can't release into the wild as well.

On other issues; we seriously need to get back to Natsuki, and also come up with a good excuse. We don't want to Sayaka - while we can still do damage control on the situation we should. We should also give Maiko something to do so she doesn't have a chance to wallow in grief.

Going to read through the current votes again and put in more comments (and maybe a vote).

@Echo, if we go hang out with Natsuki, will we have any of the evening free?

Actually, upon rereading the votes, @DarkLight140's is pretty fantastic (though long). Going to suggest a couple of additions.

-[] Spontaneously declare an anime night at your place (probably avoid the magical girl stuff, though). With food and snacks. Minami, Yumi and Maiko are in charge of buying the food and snacks. (oh look, team bonding!). You should probably chip in, though.
-[] IF POSSIBLE. Before that, go hang out with Natsuki. You probably need an excuse, though...
-[] Kidnap Shinobu for your anime night.

And then deal with Kaede early morning tomorrow and go visit the princess in the tower (i.e. Koharu).

[X] Darklight140

He clearly put a lot of thought into this, and increasing cohesion is never a bad thing.
