[X] Subject 28: Higher chance to recover HYDRA intel
MARCH 2014
Project BULWARK Facility: Subject Containment Chamber 028
…Fifteen minutes after HYDRA attack
Background Rolls:
Whoever said it's the small things in life make life worth living clearly never fought Nazis in a closed environment whilst bulletproof.
Pow! "My leg!"
Bang! "My arms!"
Zap! "My confidence!"
What. You look down at the final remaining attacker cowering in front of you, the rest of his compatriots lying in various states of disassembly. Actually, come to think of it this wasn't really a fight at all, was it? You mean… once you take bullets out of the equation there really wasn't a lot they could do.
Regardless, you think to yourself while backhanding the groveling agent into dreamless sleep,
whatever that was, it was cathartic.
Now what? You look up as you hear an intercom crackle.
Lockdown Base[Damien] (20,50,80):87
*Bum* "Good morning everyone, this is the Security Chief speaking to notify all personnel that the facility is now on complete lockdown due to an invasion of the Fourth Reich, otherwise known as HYDRA. If anyone feels to need to correct me on the subtle differences between HYDRA and Nazism I invite them to shoot themselves before base security finds them.
All hallways and exits have been sealed and my security teams are sweeping the base as we speak. Please remain calm while the problem is being resolved. While that might not sound like the most convincing argument for me not being HYDRA please note that my men are not killing anyone, while Hydra is trying its level best to exterminate everyone else on the base.
In essence, if they're trying to kill you, and you're not HYDRA they are probably not HYDRA. Good luck everyone."
As you ponder that bounty of information the intercom turns on again, this time addressing you directly.
"Wendy, it's good to see you back on your feet." The voice says with a note of… relief?
"I don't know who you're talking about" You reply.
"That's not funny Agent Walker" the voice replies tersely. "It looks like your beauty sleep did you a good turn, are you prepared for active duty?"
Hey, "Did you just ignore the part where I said I didn't recognize that name, Damien? Whatever happened to me must have scrambled something up there."
"We really don't have time for this Wendy. You don't have amnesia, and your brains were scrambles far before the lab techs got to it."
"Caaain! You don't just tell someone they don't have amnesia. That's so rude! What if I really didn't recognize you? Then I would be convinced that you are trying to manipulate me into being your faithful slave until I inevitably come to my senses and kill you before the culmination of your ultimate plans."
You hear a sigh over the intercom. "You addressed me, Damien Cain, by name. I have not told you either my first or last name in this conversation, I made an assumption. Was I wrong?"
Jerk. "No. But I just woke up in a lab and then immediately beat the crap out of some people who clearly had no idea what I was capable of. That naturally means my next step is to break out of the facility and go on the lamb as my creators try and take me back."
"I thought I was supposed to manipulate you into being my slave?"
"Well
you do that, trying to convince me that we used to work together and my amazing talents should be yours. But at the
same time you also try to chase me down with lethal intent, striking a delicate balance between the risk of my escape and the reward of my abilities."
You smile and rock back on your heels as you wait for a reply.
Cain replies in a more serious tone. "As interesting as your upcoming screenplay is Walker, we don't have the time for a full recap. Take whatever supplies you need and approach the Research lab. I'll keep the way as clear as possible, but expect hostiles."
"Roger, Rodger, el Capitan"
Search Roll (20,50,80): 53+15= 68
In the nightstand next to your bed you find a badge and a pistol. Well, looks like you really are
Wendy Walker.
Gained: SHIELD Badge (Lv. 3) and SHIELD handgun
You finally exit your room/prison cell, entering a concrete hallway. You note that the Suit Nazi is still alive, if barely. His unconscious shudders as he tries to breathe through broken ribs. Considering that you really can't do anything about that, you decide to rifle through his pockets.
You find a phone in his jacket pocket; a brief click shows a password lock screen. Fortunately for you, it seems like the devise can be opened via a fingerprint and retinal scan. Some minor puppeteering grants you access.
Gained: Partially decrypted HYDRA phone
Even better, it looks like unlocking it has activated something. Waving the phone in front of each downed HYDRA agent makes the phone buzz slightly. Waving it in front of yourself gives a more aggressive two-toned buzz. It seems like the phone can differentiate between HYDRA and SHIELD agents… at least until HYDRA realizes the phone is compromised. Such a system probably wasn't meant to last long after HYDRA revealed itself anyway. However, it is most certainly appreciated now.
Traveling to the Lab (20,50): 86 +10 (Successful Lockdown) = 96
You breeze through the facility as Cain directs you to the lab, unlocking doors along the way. As you travel you hear intermittent gunfire as SHIELD security battles the insurgent forces.
Within minutes you reach the lab.
Secure Lab Space [Andrea] (20,50,80):42
As you enter the lab you see a woman in a lab coat typing furiously. Surrounding her are two bodies, one very dead, one not.
"Ah!" the scientist brightens up visibly as she glances your way, her hands never stopping as the blurred across the keyboard, "It's good to see you back in action Agent Walker"
Her brow creases. I was able to stop the Project BULWARK's data from being exported off-site, presumably HYDRA, but I couldn't do it subtly. HYDRA currently I'm trying to get as much data saves as possible before they delete themselves.
Data Recovery (20,40,60,80,100): 79
She smiles softly. "I didn't get everything but I got most of it, enough to rebuild given time." Andrea looks to you. "That will probably make maintenance quite a bit easier Agent Walker."
"Maintenance?" you ask.
"No time," you hear Cain say over the intercom. "Whatever HYDRA wanted from this facility they didn't get it. The radar is picking up reinforcements displaying SHIELD IFFs, but they aren't responding to standard hails. The base is clear of HYDRA but we need to evacuate."
You have ONE HOUR before HYDRA reinforcement arrive and you need to evacuate by Quinjet (You only have one). Afterwards the base will self-destruct. You have enough time to perform one more action.
(PICK ONE)
[]
Loot the Lab Equipment: While most of the Lab equipment is too big to take with you. There is still quite a bit of expensive (and useful) stuff to loot (Bonus to Learning).
[] Raid the Armory: SHIELD weaponry may be conventional, but it's still the best of the best. Use your remaining time to get as many weapons and explosives as you can. (Bonus to Martial)
[] Gather the Gadgets: SHIELD wears a lot of hats but they are first and foremost a covert organization. Take all of the spy gear you have on hand, it might be useful in the future. (Bonus to Intrigue)
For the next scene focus on… (No real bonuses, just the perspective)
[] Damien Cain
[] Andrea Smith
[] Wendy Walker
A/N
Alright! Super excited about the big response to the first chapter, here's the next one!
Haven't found the right 'look' for Walker and Smith, but here is my head canon look for Cain.
Damien Cain
I rewrote this bit many times while trying to get Walker/Subject 28 right. I don't think it's perfect, but you know… publish or perish and all that.
Your vote allowed for Walker to get her hands on the HYDRA phone without tripping the self-destruct. (The benefits of which will be revealed later)
Voting for Cain would have provided a bonus on the Lockdown Roll and netted you a prisoner. Voting for Smith would have given a bonus on the data recovery roll and given you a bonus research project.
The 'Lv. 3' on the SHIELD badge only indicates that Wendy was a Level 3 Agent, which means she was a low-level field operative. If Level One is base staff and Level 2 is base security. Wendy is like a beat cop, in the field, but normally is part of a team. However, now that she has super-human abilities her level would have risen dramatically… if SHIELD hadn't just fallen apart.
