Power Games (Nanoha fanfic)

Okay, put it another way: Drama and intention was placed on Hayate's big battle of wits and will with the Book of Darkness. She's the protagonist of that scene, if nothing else.

And again - that didn't resolve.
ok, that makes sense.

And that also ties into Ixpellia not having a role (since it's not like Nanoha knows she exists). As I said before, I overlooked it because I thought Aleph was suffering burnout.

On another, somewhat concerning, note, the Book probably got Raising Heart as well.

Or, rather, it probably got the Jewel Seed as well.

Is Nanoha able to interact with the real Wolkenritter and Hayate? After all they are inside the book as well.

Is the spell Nanoha learned an actual spell? Then it could backfire on the book as Nanoha learned a spell Precia was in no condition to relay to her otherwise.

Canonically, Fate was trapped in the Book but she didn't meet Hayate who was also trapped in the Book.

As for your second question: Would the Book, even damaged as it was, allow Nanoha to learn a spell that could harm it?

Knowing this version of Nanoha, she'd probably just take the fake spell and miraculously, even though it should, for all intents and purposes, be impossible, turn it into a real one, then blow the book apart from the inside. Probably herself too, now that I think about it.

Remember, Nanoha doesn't play by the rules, mostly because she doesn't know that they exist.

Well an illusion has to be convincing, and Nanoha is really good at math.

Also, this.

Maybe Hayate ordered Reinforce to try and stop the rampage, and using the illusion world to pass on a special spell was the best solution that Reinforce could figure out, something that bypasses the defense program's agency restrictions?

Fucking beautiful.

I did feel weird when Precia showed up because it felt like way too much of a Deus Ex Machina. Unfortunately I have no right at all to be smug because never in a million years would I have called this. Honestly, the biggest way you sold it is breaking your usual update schedule for the "epilogue" because with every other chapter there's always been this huge wait, and agh this whole idea was brilliant!

Major, major props to you both because this has got to be one of the best story twists I've ever read.

Welp that explains a lot. Starting with Precia leaving Alicia with Jail, as Nanoha considers him more trustworthy than Precia does. (And in the chapter Quint just taking Nanoha's word on Nulla and Zero. If Quint does that outside of this illusionary world, we know who Due is impersonating.) Also Durandal just being capable to be passed to just anyone and being used, or a basically nearly self taught unadminstered world mage with only a primer and experience with a simple advice being able to cast a spell in basically a programming language outside of the one they are still learning.

Also why Yuuno was able to be there to be pinning the Book of Darkness despite being the emergency medical personel for Zest.

Good show, good show. And I wonder what sort of hell has broken loose outside of Nanoha's illusion. As the Book of Darkness just ate a Jewel Seed.

Which ramifications of if Hayate/Book Information remains intact... it is a corrupted research device built to break spells apart. I do not want to see what it can do with the power it gets from a jewel seed. I also do not want to see what it can do with the information it can get. Though I would take the doomsday scenario that is the two combined if it means that the Jewel Seed's intelligence is not fighting for control over the Book, or the book beign further corrupted. This is a mess.

@Aleph
This is one of the single most evil plot twists I have read. You tricked us even with the Author's notes and the Table of Contents. I heartily approve.

That was a great twist that served as a reminder why I like your writing so much.

I only started really wondering about it during the sparring game.

I just noticed this from waaay back in oh, the previous book:
Article:
"I thought… I guess I thought I was going to fix everything and have a happy ending where everybody won, and there was nothing to be sad about. But it doesn't always work out like that, does it? Sometimes you can't get a happy ending."

(I started suspecting around where Limiters were discussed, since I recall the lengthy lecture on why the TSAB wouldn't just let a civilian run around with WMD powers no matter the circumstances.)

Bravo! Bravo! I will be honest that you had me going there for a bit. Although thinking back I did have that vague feeling that something was off, mostly because we never got a scene of Chrono in the Lotus Eater Machine. Not to mention Jail not betraying our heroes and running away with Alicia and her jewel seed.

I told my friends Precia coming back was an asspull and thought this story was less for it. I'm sorry for not having faith.

So, one scene I'm very interested in now. Remember in canon when Reinforce used Starlight Breaker and Nanoha had to be pulled away from her own spell? I expect something similar is going to happen in this. Only I'm hoping she'll do something like "Starlight Breaker? I know this!" and completely wreck it somehow.

I'll be honest, I have no idea how to feel about this. On one hand, it's certainly a very well executed plot twist that, in hindsight, is foreshadowed by a lot. On the other, given that I'm still recovering from a pretty major depression right now, and had already come to accept the fake ending as true and become emotionally invested in seeing it continue...
I guess I'm just going to do the same thing with that last scene that I'm doing with the latter half of the newest season of RWBY; Pretend it didn't happen until the next update comes out and I can look forward to things looking up again.

Nanoha brightened, and was almost immediately shaded again as Alicia swung down on the drone and leapt onto her shoulders. Since Nanoha was not an unfairly super-fit athletic cheater like Fate, this served no purpose other than to send her face-first into the stiltgrass.
So cute! :lol

My god... Aleph, ES? Game Theory and Power Games, together... have been an absolutely amazing ride! Thank you for brain-storming/writing/editing them!

EDIT: Wait. It's not over yet?!?

I've read far too much fanfiction, and so what the last couple of chapters looked like to me was someone wrapping up a work that they'd lost interest in, but felt compelled to provide some kind of conclusion to. As I was reading the epilogue, I was expecting that sort of author's note to come up at the bottom. This outcome is much more satisfying.

I give this troll a 2/10. The worst you drew from me was a some resignation over a good author moving on, and this outcome is simply a relief. :p

Half expecting it, so not that much of a surprise. Beyond everything suddenly turning into optimistic canon Nanoha, there was also the moment of discontinuity.

As excellent a chapter as it was evil.

mean, as long as I keep it quite and don't get spotted?

quite -> quiet

And the TSAB aren't willing to kill two innocent children, not when the Lost Logia in them are sealed and dormant.

I was going to ask about the jewel seeds in the devices, but I guess that's a moot point now.

"I don't..." she choked out, "I don't think this is real. I don't think the Book got Chrono. I... I think it got me."

I'll admit you completely got me. I didn't suspect a thing.

On a different note, I kinda hope if you do continue with Nanoha's adventures that she doesn't join the TSAB. I think you could tell a better story with them on their own than joining up.
