You need to be able to fire tens of thousands of rounds consistently, that's not something they will be able to do for long. It's basically the same issue as a zombie apocalypse.
Amazing. Every word in that was wrong.
First of all, it won't be a zombie apocalypse because the total forces? The first crusade number
about 35-40,000 crusaders, with about 5K cavalry.
Israel alone has an active military of over 169,000.
Then there's the fact that Medieval formations were
tight. The typical weapon of decision was the mounted knight charging. other forces would use arrows, and infantry would play a supporting role, often in tight lines, because getting separated out? Means you die to charging knights.
Oh wait. did I just say: Everyone is marching, upright, in
tight formations? Gee, sure would be unfortunate if something bad happened to them, now wouldn't it?
you know something like:
Simple weapon, with a range of several miles, and the ability to drop hellfire on their heads before
they even realize they're under attack.
Because Medieval armies don't fight at BVR. They don't fight at the range of miles. The average conflict, when it comes down to the battle means that they may start fighting at less then a few hundred meters.
Which means that this:
Is just as deadly as the mortar, because suddenly, as they're marching along, with nobody in sight, so they know they're safe, and then the commander of hte army (the guy wearing the really fancy stuff because he
needs to be seen in combat) drops dead with a hole in him. A few seconds later they hear the "pop" of a round--only nobody knows what it is. You know, because as yet, nobody has even heard of a gun, them being uninvented until the 1300s. All they know is people are keeling over dead, no idea where the death is coming from! A sniper can carry over 100 rounds, more if he has aid. Enjoy a good few minutes killing guys, hope on to the little ATV, drive back for some jerky and replacement ammo, find another location, rinse and repeat.
And worse? It doesn't matter what they do because of :
This magical, nae, daemonic power that lets the commander and troops know
exactly where they are. Of course, our hapless medieval troops don't know
how it's happening. Just that their every movement is watched and even the gentle shadows of night bring no surcase as the demons continue to kill them using:
Oh, and they bring a 4x4 and some motorbikes to move the platoon around.
Yes. Platoon. 24-36 men are all it takes to shatter the mighty army of the crusaders, killing their commanders from beyond their sight, striking at them when they're helpless at night, running away whenever they are seen, moving faster than men on horses can, and occassionally dropping some 81 mm hellfire into a camp.
And none of these tools are resource intensive. Hell, with the exception of the mortar? None of them are even
restricted military tech-- you can find sniper rifles like that and NVG systems in many stores. Israel has more than enough to equip all the soldiers they need. In terms of expending resources? It likely costs Israel less than your typical military exercise, because
those are set up to model combat against modern enemies.
In fact, given the resource drain and occupied territories being ROB'd away, it's likely that Israel mothballs the majority of their frontline equipment save for enough to deal with ISIS/ Iraq, because they're utter overkill when it comes to slaughtering downtimers.
TL: DR. Militarily? The Downtimers don't count. At all.
