Hey guy's, what's up? So, recently I've been working to hard on my writing, particularly my plot bunny thread, so I decided to take a break. I still wanted to keep creative though, just in a way that was fun and relaxing. So I'm doing a nuzlocke run and telling you all about it. Yes, nuzlocked runs are relaxing to me. As you can see from the title this will be a Pokemon Emerald Random Nuzlocke. I picked pokemon emerald because generation three is my favorite generation. I love the sprite art and the new Hoenn Pokemon are pretty cool. It's a nuzlocke for some challenge and I randomized it to keep things interesting. For those who want to try out randomizing yourselves or are just curious you can find the randomizer I used here.
These are the settings I used when randomizing the rom.
And here are the rules I'll be using for this nuzlocke.
RexHeller's Nuzlocke Rules:
Wow, that's a lot smaller than I thought it would be. I play with my emulator's window size increased but apparently when it takes screen shots that doesn't matter. Tell me if you want them bigger but for now I'll leave it. It'll let me fit more in I guess.
After the title screen I start a new game.
This is Birch. He's the pokemon professor in this generation. The purpose of pokemon professors is to give you your first pokemon and your pokedex. Oh and research pokemon I guess. Maybe. Possibly. I've never seen them do it is all I'm saying. They also give you the "Welcome to the World of Pokemon" speech at the beginning of each game. Birch is different from the other professors because he actually goes out side sometimes. You can tell by the shorts and beard.
He keeps talking and we get our first glimpse of what the randomizer has done.
Normally he throws out a Lotad (I think?) as the example pokemon but as you can see that's been replaced with a Bulbasaur. The new colors match up to it's new types. I can't tell exactly by looking but I'd guess Bulbasaur is now a water/poison type? Maybe? I dunno.
Next is character creation, something that takes hours in other games.
And we're done. Name's Rex and I'm a boy. Unfortunately you can't name your rival in this generation but May's a nice girl so I wouldn't have named her Jackass anyway.
Anyway, Birch finishes up and we fade to black...
... And I wake up in the back of a moving truck.
Rex: Man, what did I drink last night?
Odd sleeping places aside the truck soon stops and I regain the ability to move, allowing me to jump out of the truck. Which is good because if the whole game spent in the back of a truck I would feel so jipped.
Outside the truck my Mom is waiting for me.
Rex: And where is here exactly?
Rex: Never heard of it.
Mom: It's in the Hoenn region.
Rex: Never heard of it.
Mom: Rex, quit being a jackass.
Mom drags me inside the house and it's filled with Vigoroths. Turns out they belong to the movers and they're unloading all our stuff. Of course that raises the question of where they actually came from. There was only one truck and I was in the back. I would have seen them when they started unloading stuff right?
Mom tells me to stop questioning the logic of the game and go to my room.
So here's the thing that every pokemon let's play points out. The house is only two stories and my room takes up the entire second floor, so where do my parents sleep? There's only one room on the bottom floor as well and there's only one bed in the entire house. Of course, none of this really matters as I do the first thing everyone should do when starting up a pokemon game.
Hop on the computer and LOOK UP PORN!
.... Just kidding. Here's the real reason.
There's always a potion in your computer at the beginning of the game. That doesn't matter much in regular playthroughs but in nuzlocke it's a godsend.
With that done, it's time to do what Mom actually told me to do and set the clock.
Rex: The hell is this? This isn't a clock! Why is it round? Where are the numbers? Fuck it, I'm not touching this. I'll just say I set. It's not like she'll be able to tell if it's the right time or not either.
With nothing else to do I head back down stairs. When I get there Mom calls me immediately. Also, the Vigoroths are gone so the house no longer smells like monkeys and that's nice.
Rex: Hehe, come.
Mom: And quit being a jackass!
And what is so important?
Rex: ... You just wanted me to get some exercise didn't you.
So yeah, gen three is the only generation of pokemon where you don't have an absentee father. Sure, he's not around the house much and works two towns over but he exists. You can go visit him anytime you want. And besides, it's not like you're going to be coming back here more than twice once you get the pokedex.
After the disappointment of missing the chance to see my dad for the first time in months, Mom tells me to go outside and makes some friends. Birch lives right next door, he's friends with Dad and he has a daughter, so of course our parents immediately start trying to set me up with the poor girl.
Stepping outside I can explore Littleroot town, population ten. It has exactly three buildings, it's in the middle of nowhere and it sucks. I immediately want to leave but just like every pokemon game there's someone at the only exit who keeps you from leaving until you get a pokemon. What makes it really annoying this generation is the person calling you an idiot is a kid half your size. C'mon! If I want to capture pokemon the old fashioned way of beating them with my fists until they're out cold and then draging them home, I should be able to do that!
With nothing else to do, I head into Birch's house. His wife, who doesn't even get a name, greets me.
Rex: How do you know my name?
May's Mom: You mother told me. She also said that I should smack you if you start acting like a jackass.
Rex: Yeah, that sounds like her. So where's this girl I'm supposed to meet?
May's Mom: She should be upstairs. Play nice now.
These are the settings I used when randomizing the rom.
And here are the rules I'll be using for this nuzlocke.
RexHeller's Nuzlocke Rules:
- If a pokemon faints, it is dead and must be released at the PC.
- I may only capture the first pokemon I encounter in each area. If that pokemon faints or flees, that's too bad. I am defining "area" the same way the randomizer I'm using does, meaning that each floor of a cave counts as a different area.
- All pokemon must be given nicknames.
- Rule 2 is not enforced until pokeballs are made available.
- Revives may be used but only in the same battle in which the pokemon being revived faints. Revives may not be purchased and can only be used if found in the environment.
