Perhaps a journey

Precisely what I am expecting to happen if the Big People attempts to do so.

Then again, it's not like Dreamers understand a 'deal'. They'll just say 'yes' and grab the shinies.
Well to be honest, anyone who can't get the fact that Fairies are essentially Scary little Death machines who live in a forest that literally is out to get you.... Should spend some time living in their forest. If they get back out alive, they will have new found respect.

They are Arabic names i looked up. Faries are Arabic, hound people Greek, winged are Japanese, humans are a mish mash, and Horse Lords are Chinese. Not certain what I plan for Orcan. Thinking either English or French.

[x]Before leaving, see how Minnah is doing. What is she up to? Is she happier now?
[x] Follow Keeper to the city. Act like Tour Guide! Meet Perl, not as negotiator, but as Fairy and Keeper and Third Wheel! YAY!~
-[x] See if we can rope in a few more Hunters, definitely some Crafters and Gatherers. If we're going to be negotiating trade, having some experts on WHAT we can trade would be smart. And more Fairies needs more Guards.

The keeper wants to do a few things before she leaves, so you decide to stay awhile and take it easy while she does so. You technically don't have a place to stay while you are there, but it's easy enough to get a room with one of the others around the place. You relax for a time, and get yourself rested. Then, decide it's time to check on Minnah.

This takes a lot of tracking. Apparently the red fairy spends most of her time out in the forest, and doesn't like to be in the city. It's a phase you are actually pretty familiar with. Most hunters go through something similar. You want to protect after all.

You find her resting in one of the larger trees. She's picked up a fairy chain somewhere. The thing is resting nearby her, and you note several barbs along the length. This is more for grabbing and tearing than the typical slashing that you favor. Considering the fairies strength, it's a good choice.

"Hey hey-y!" You sit next to her with a smile, and she looks at you with a grunt.

"Hello Oma." She finally mutters and flops down on the tree. She looks pretty tired. "How you be?"

"I'm good." You frown a bit at her. "I'm wondering about you though. You don't look very happy-y."

She rolls her eyes at you in response. "The keeper says I have a lot of anger to be working through. I be doing that by going after the things that like to kill dreamers."

"Ah." You look over the chain again, and note the blood. "Good hunting then-n?"

Minnah gives a tired smile. "Lots of it. It be cleansing I think."

You look over the fairy again. She does look a lot calmer at least. You would have to watch her a bit more to get an idea of how she's doing, but you think that she will be fine.

"Well, if you need help, please talk with me-e." You finally offer, and the red fairy nods at you.

That done, the next day Ruwaydah is relatively ready. You see that she has quite a few items on her, but you can't identify anything but the pack. You frown a bit as you get ready.

"Should we bring a few others-s?" You ask her opinion on this.

She frowns as well in thought. "On one hand, it would make things easier to show. On the other, I can run down the standard things our people like to make, and I would prefer not to have half a dozen of you all to track down should something happen. We can bring more later if this goes well-l."

"Fair enough-h." You shrug and begin to lead the way.

As usual the trip takes most of the day. You go at a fair clip that doesn't tire you out too much, but you note that the keeper is keeping up with you almost casually. In fact, when you reach the city while you need to rest, she's as bright and as chipper as she first left.

"Your endurance needs a bit of work-k." She teases you cheerfully as you rest your aching wings.

You grumble a bit, but lead Ruwaydah to your home, and shove aside some room for her to rest. Then you pass out on your bed as she hums cheerfully. Your last view is of her pulling out several glass bottles, each of them filled with something.

The next day you find the fairy wide awake and quietly sewing something as she waits for you. You aren't even certain she slept to be honest, but her business is her own you think.

"So where shall we go first?" She asks you calmly. "I believe that their 'king' wished an audience tomorrow, so I have today pretty free."

"Well." You think for a moment. "I think we can go visit Pearl. She could handle a lot of the trading stuff, and she hasn't met a keeper yet-t."

Ruwaydah laughs a moment. "That's the white one that Minnah was speaking of? That sounds like a good idea considering that you likely made a mess explaining the facts of life to her-r."

"I did pretty good I thought-t." You mutter quietly.

"I've not met a non-keeper explain how we reproduce without stuttering and trailing off-f." The keeper states simply, and you flush.

"She didn't need to know that one-e."

Ruwaydah laughs out loud.

That embarrassment done, you both go to where Perl is. The guards at the house are quite used to you by now, and wave you in without issue. They do look at the keeper with a more suspicious look, but with you vouching for her they don't particularly see an issue. You think they find you relatively harmless, which is always mildly amusing.

"Hello." Perl meets you in front of the door to Athena's room. "Athena's sleeping, so I would prefer not to wake her."

Ruwaydah flits in front of you to examine the fairy. "Oh my." She states and smiles softly at the fairy. "I remember you. You are just as lovely as you were first born, and I see your Charm matches your appearance-e."

The white fairy moves back, slightly uncomfortable. "I be sorry, but have we met?"

You cough. "This is Keeper Ruwaydah."

Pearl blinks at you and then looks at the keeper with confusion. "They be the ones very old right?"

"Be still." The Keeper's voice goes flat, and you see Perl freeze in place. "Yes, we are the one's who's age measures in centuries." Ruwaydah circles the white fair a few times to examine her. "You aren't eating right." The Keeper stops in front of Pearl and frowns. "Your skin is a shade too pale, and you hair is starting to dry. Not enough water and meat I would think."

Perl opens her mouth to protest, but meets the Keeper's eyes and freezes even further. You back up a bit yourself. She doesn't look happy.

"I will state the dress is lovely, but it's hitting your wing muscles wrong. You are going to have to let it down a hands length otherwise you will cripple yourself trying anything strenuous." The Keeper continues and take's Pearl's chin in her hands. "You also aren't exercizing enough. You look to be a mental type, so you don't have to be extremely fit, but understand our people are fragile in this world. Sometimes you will have to fly away."

Pearl jerks away and glares at the keeper. "You be finished now?" She looks disturbed, and rather angry now.

Ruwaydah flares her wings as she floats in place. You shiver a bit. That's not a pleased signal. Pearl flits back even more, keeping her back to the door. You've never seen a keeper truly displeased, but just that glimpse of it is enough to make you want to run right now. For a moment, that's all you can think of. Then the feeling cuts out as the keeper smiles.

"Well, I will state that your charm is top notch. It's hard to hit a keeper with it, but you almost did me. I'm also impressed that you are keeping between us and the door. Your charge is Athena correct-t?" You take a deep breath, and you note that Pearl is doing the same.

"Y-yes." She stutters out and clears her throat. "She's my friend, and the first thing I saw when I woke."

"That's good." Ruwaydah nods at the fairy. "If you like, I can teach you a few simple things to better protect her later. Right now, I think we have trade to discuss-s."

Pearl nods hesitantly at the keeper. "I suppose so?"

"Good!" The Keeper chirps. "Lets find a place to sit. There are lots of things to talk about-t."

The next few hours are spent discussing the various things that can be traded, and the expected prices. You fall asleep about ten minutes into it. You wake up as they finish off, and get the impression that some sort of deal has been made. Pearl at least seems to have gotten over her initial encounter with Ruwaydah, but you don't think she's going to forget it.

You also think that Ruwaydah has explained a few things since Pearl still has a bit of a flush, but you aren't going to comment.

[] You have half the day left. Where else to go?

-[X] Ask Ruwaydah if you could learn poisons from her, and what kind of dedication that would entail... It would be a useful skill to cultivate as a hunter and police... but we aren't sure if we can do it unless we can work it into our other duties.
-[X] Talk to Ruwaydah about Magic: Introduce her to some of your friends who are strong in it. And see if it is something that she knows/can relate to directly. (Watch them talk shop if anything)
-[X] Find out the basic end result of the deal brokered... and figure out what your place in it now is.

More that she was annoyed that Pearl didn't wait for the declarative end. You know, the letter-letter. It's an accent that in their language means it's time for you to speak. She was also testing Pearl, and feeling out how she is. Think of keepers like really really scary mommies that make certain that you do everything right. Or else.

Your next stop is the Police Station. At this point the morning shift is starting to wind down, so you actually are seeing some traffic as you guide the keeper. She seems mildly amused at all the people moving around, and even more amused at your new job. You find Rufus at his desk, doing some sort of paperwork.

"Hi Rufus-s!" You chirp to him as you float to your desk, keeper following behind sedately.

"Hello Oma." Rufus looks to the other fairy. "This be one of your friends from the jungle? I didn't think there were many other fairies here."

"She's visiting." You reply. "This is Keeper Ruwaydah." You motion to the fair in question who nods. "And here's where I do the paperwork stuff! It's spectacularly boring and involves me writing funny little squiggles that mean something on paper-r."

Rufus turns back to his work with a small smile, and then pauses, and deliberately sets down his pen. "Oma." You look at the Champion. "Keepers are the oldest of your people correct?"

"Yep!" You nod. "Ruwaydah is cool! Apparently she's supposed to meet with your king tomorrow-w?"

The fairie in question nods. "Diana passed on a message to establish 'a diplomatic presence' and speak with the king." She shrugs at this point. "We don't really do things like Big People do, but I can at least make certain that our people don't go around doing unpleasant things. Since Oma's having such a good time here, I might even see if I can convince a fellow keeper to move here. That would make it so that when conflicts happen you all have someone to help-p."

"That be great." Rufus smiles, but you note it looks a bit strained. "Ruwaydah, hypothetically how much damage do you think a keeper could do to the city? I be a bit curious since Oma's such a little terror herself."

"It would depend." The keeper closes her eyes in thought. "Personally, if I wanted I could possible damage about half the area. My specialty is poisons, and you Big People don't have near the resistance that we do. That's if I wanted to use a few of the aerial poisons I know of. Close combat would take longer of course. Most Keepers aren't particularly combat focused however. In that case they wouldn't be able to do as much damage, but they wouldn't be possible for you to catch. Well unless your magics have more power and speed than I have heard described."

Ruwaydah opens her eyes and smiles slightly. Just a small tilt of the lips, but it somehow comes across as chilling. "Now if we wanted to raze the city, it wouldn't be a single keeper. We don't get that old without know a lot of other fairies. Of course, this is hypothetical. You would have to seriously irritate us to do that. In fact, I can't think of anything off hand that would involve that-t."

Rufus nods at the keeper. "I will be taking that into account. Thank you for indulging me." With that he gets to his feet. "I unfortunately have other business now Oma, Ruwaydah. Thank you for visiting, and please feel free to look around. "

Ruwaydah giggles. "You have very interesting friends Oma." She looks around the office. "Though really, all this for Big People being bad-d?"

You give a shrug. "There are several other buildings too. They do things a lot differently than we do. Plus there are lots of Big People in the city. Plus they have lots more people around here. Our cities are a lot smaller compared to theirs-s."

"Well I suppose that makes sense." The Keeper looks around again. "I can only imagine the amount of annoyances I would have if you were all crammed into one area-a."

"I can just imagine a few Oma's in a single room and I already know it would be a wreck." Jocasta slides into a seat nearby and waves at you. "Who be the new one Oma?"

"This is Keeper Ruwaydah!" You motion to the fairy. "I'm showing her around-d!"

"Pleased to meat you." The officer nods to the newcomer. "What be a keeper."

"Just the one who keeps our people in a loose ball of organization instead of a thousand leaves on the wind-d." Is the response from the Keeper as she smiles.

"Must be a large bit of work." Jocasta replies with a laugh.

"Oh it is." Ruwaydah laughs as well. "The stories I could tell-l."

"Now that sounds fun." The officer replies back.

"Well we can talk about this at dinner?" You interject at this point. "I wanted to show a few things off, and there are some really nice places to eat-t."

"Well if you are paying." Jocasta laughs as you stick out your tongue.

The restaurant in question is one of the more expensive places to go to, but it's got good food, and it's actually halfway used to the portions you like. The Keeper ends up telling a few tales of the more ridiculous shenanigans your people can get up to, and Jocasta in turn tells the tale of a few of the more idiotic criminals. It's an interesting event. At the end you all go away rather happy, and the Keeper follows you back home.

"Entertaining place-e." She comments as she sits back in your 'room'.

"I like it." You smile brightly. "I learned about magic stuff here too-o."

"Indeed. That was an interesting thing to hear about. We've know for awhile that there were ways of going faster and being stronger, but having it defined as such helps greatly. And these actual magic schools sound very interesting indeed." Ruwaydah nods at you. "Though I don't think that many will have the patience to apply themselves-s."

You shrug. That's probably expected. "Maybe one of us will awaken to it-t?"

"It would take a Dreamer getting into contact with a mage at the right time." Ruwaydah states. "It will take time-e."

"That's a common thing isn't it-t." You reply back as you stick out your tongue.

"All things come in time." Ruwaydah laughs at your comment. "To reach the level of proficiency I have gotten to took me a good few years of constant study. Most Keepers have done something similar. It's why we are Keepers-s."

"Any tips then oh wise and knowledgeable one-e?" You ask half seriously.

She does have a few actually.

[] Next Day's actions

Ruwaydah has given you few tips about poisons. There are two that might be interesting. A contact poison that's a hallucinogenic, and a simple powder that causes nausea and vomiting. You can get a quick lesson in either one.

[X] Contact poison

Can we go with the keeper when she goes to visit the king?

What kind of hallucination are we talking about, for the first one? Depending on the kind it generates, it might not be all that useful.

The second, however, would synergize pretty well with our job. Like tear gas, except with more vomit instead of tears.

[X] Go with the Keeper to visit the King.
[X]Powder

While contact poison is nice, hallucinogenic poison is really dangerous as you never know what someone under that influence will do. They could mellow out, rampage fighting illusionary enemies or whatever. Unless we can get hints about the effects from the keeper I say hands off to that.

I only now realized how hyperfocussed fairies really are. I mean, they dedicate almost all of their time to the urge that awakened them, their personality seems to be tailor built to be good at what they want to do and they are the next best thing to immortal. I shudder what a fairy completely dedicated to mastering magic could do once she reaches Keeper age... Or a politician fairy like Pearl.

And now the Hound people unleashed them upon the world. I for one welcome our tiny overlords.
The thing about the hyper focus is it's a actually a focus. If it's not related to what a fairy considers 'important' they tend not to care so much. They can shift it around somewhat, but it's not an immediate thing, and takes a bit of time. Right now youve shifted from hunting to hunting and enforcing. A more radical shift would take time.

[X] Go with the Keeper to visit the King.
[X] Powder

--

The powder you are instructed in is interesting stuff. It's actually a certain type of beetle ground up. When inhaled it causes severe nausea and will cause vomiting in high enough doses. It's effective against most mammals, and will even hit Fairies a bit with it. (The beetles are one of the few types your people won't eat.) The biggest tricks for it are identifying the appropriate beetles, and getting it in an appropriate delivery method. It keeps well, and is actually one of the easier poisons to use.

The main reason you don't use it is because it's not exactly useful against most things you hunt. But against Hound People it will be perfectly viable.

Ruwaydah even gives you two 'horns' of powder. They are basically small tubes that you can blow violently into. Once you do so it will project a cloud of dust in front of you. She estimates it's enough to stagger any of the Big People you encounter. If placed into a food or drink it would have a similar effect.

The Keeper seems to enjoy briefing you as you both fly to the palace. As you approach you realize that you never really got where the meeting was supposed to take place. It's rendered irrelevant as you are almost immediately waved in by the guards with a respectful bow.

"Oh, so polite-e." Ruwaydah comments with an amused look as you are both ushered into a fairly large room.

It's a well decorated room, filled with flags and other various decorations. A large table dominates the center of the room, and at the head of it is the King. You recognize him from the last time you were here, and wave enthusiastically.

There are two cushions set on top the table, and the keeper settles down on one of them gracefully without comment. You settle down next to her after looking around. You see several armored people nearby, out of the way. Ruwaydah notes them as well with a very amused smile.

"Greetings." The King starts. "I believe Diana wished an ambassador to be brought to us, not a Keeper. I feel I must apologize for the lack of accommodations for one of your authority."

Ruwaydah laughs, not unkindly. "You don't need to worry. Keepers are just old fairies. We might have a bit more authority, but we don't expect much different than what our people would like-e."

"Very well. I be glad you could visit us. Your people interest us greatly, and we would like to pursue further relations between us." The King nods at the Keeper. "Not only have you begun to assist us with the problems your jungle can cause, several of you have traveled her to assist with trouble that is unrelated to us. The Seven Shields thanks you for this, and I feel I must ask if there is anything we can do for you."

"Just be careful of our dreamers and don't try to trick us, and I don't anticipate any troubles." The Keeper shrugs at that. "We all follow our own paths. Should they wish to assist you we have no trouble with it." Here Ruwaydah pauses. "Though I would not object to a few magical tutors being available nearby the logging camp where Diana dwells. A few demonstrations of magic for the dreamers, and a few might awaken wanting to learn. More awakened are always welcomed-d."

"I will put in a request as soon as this is over with." The King nods and you see an attendant in the background make a note. "We would not be objecting to our new allies gaining access to the magics that are known in this world."

Ruwaydah smiles brightly. "Well, if you do that I will see about getting a Keeper here. I know a few awakened are already discussing moving here, so you will probably want someone who can keep them in line-e."

"I can do that-t." You mutter quietly, and get a pinch from Ruwaydah.

"Perhaps, but I would like having someone with experience just in case-e." She says back quietly.

"That be acceptable." The King nods in agreement. "I will arrange for a few buildings to be set aside for your people. Considering your size, it would be best for you to have some specifically designed places should you come in numbers."

"That would be great-t!" The Keeper responds with enthusiasm.

The rest of the meeting is the differences between your people, and what would be best for a colony of Fairies. It's mildly interesting, but you can't help but have your attention wander a bit. It's not really something you are particularly interested in.

[]

(I'll be honest I can't think up much more for this meeting since it's still an introductory stage. Feel free to write in if you want to know anything else, or go tot he next action after meeting. The Keeper will be leaving after a day.)

They have a new neighbor that's capable of causing a lot of damage. It's like knowing that there is a Tank next door suddenly. It's scary, but if your neighbor doesn't have cause to hurt you, you should be fine.

We did say to a champion that they could wipe out the city with a couple of them. He probably told the king.

[x] Propose/point out that the 'assigned building' might want to be near or a part of the park where we've made our home. Or of a similar construction. A garden building maybe? An arboretum? Botanical Garden, plant nursery, etc. Fairies would most likely be more comfortable living in or near areas similar to what they come from, so a heavily planted or forested commune should be considered higher priority, and one that's set aside for our own development away from heavy Big People traffic is preferred. So a park or building, that wouldn't be too hard for any future Keepers to settle in and possibly foster a Life Flower within.

But yeah:
