Robotech's been around since 1985.

BattleTech (the earliest relevant 'North American robot thing') got its start 5 years later, and actually got into some serious dust recently with Harmony Gold about stealing their mech designs.

Transformers also got hit pretty hard, actually, because Jetfire was a -picture-perfect copy- of Rick Hunter's VF-1J Valkyrie.

Pretty sure Robotech's the thing errbodeh else be rippin' off.
Nah, everyone is lifting from Macross, but Harmony Gold owns the rights to most Macross stuff outside Japan and they're kinda copyright trolls, not doing anything with it and suing anyone they can get away with. Battletech used Macross designs because Tatsunoku (I think) sold them the license as well, even though they weren't supposed to. Really, the licensing of Macross stuff is a massive tangled mess.

That's it. Messed up who was stealing.

I'll just end this train here with this final thought.

This is why we can't have nice things.

We got Battlecry. -That was it.- NA got -the worst- of the offerings Macross video gaming had to offer.

Frontier series? Nope.

Macross 30: Voices Across the Galaxy? Nope.

We got Robotech: Battlecry.

Don't get me wrong, Jack Archer's story is awesome and poignant and full of drama and the voice-acting is -spot the fuck on-, but the gameplay is goddamned -terrible-. Unlimited Charlie-Foxtrot-Yankee missiles in Fighter mode? Damnit. OSOK Sniping FTW Battloids? Too easy. Only picking things up with your hands in the subsonic My-Ass-Is-On-Fire Guardian-mode? WTF!

I want a better Macross game! Damnit, HG, quit being license-hogs!

That's over two decades old already, in fact. Already starting in 1994 FASA had to suddenly change a whole lot of 'Mech designs because they looked just too close to Robotech.

Ah. Article I was reading presented it as recent. Maybe FASA tried again? I know the LAM-dustup was waaaaay back in the '90s, but the Article mentioned officer's battlepods.

HG doing useful things with the Macross franchise? :V

*the next thirty minutes of this message were filled with hysterical laughter*

Seriously, I love Macross' idea of VFs, even roleplayed as an Ace Combat char who used VF versions of the Strangreal fighters, but I've always known Macross as... well, Macross.

At least Voltron made it here, even though it's another chop shop job. :V

FASA doesn't even exist anymore. Its licenses (Shadowrun and Battletech, mainly) were bought by 2001 German company FanPro, who 2007 sold them again to Catalyst Games. Apparently Catalyst tried the whole "Unseen" issue again in 2009, which failed. And then made some statement in 2015 that basically was "Yeah okay we're giving up". Something like that, at least, I think.

Ah. Yep. That explains it, thanks!

...Is there something wrong with the BattleTech franchise? People who own its license just....'whoopsie! I accidentally'd your shit!'?

Well, you could as well say the same about Shadowrun then, the two always came in a package :p

FASA just plain went down financially. FanPro meanwhile was a pretty solid German company, who at the same time also published Das Schwarze Auge, which is Germany's top pen and paper RGP. Germany's "standard fantasy" RPG like D&D, but way more dominant than D&D is on its home market, and yes, I know that already is a lot. Basically you can't do pen and paper RPG here and avoid DSA ;) (conversely, D&D has basically made zero inroads here). Holding the rights to DSA, Battletech and Shadowrun was hence pretty solid.

But then they had some really weird business ideas: Selling off all the licenses for those franchises except the novel licenses, on which they wanted to focus. So they sold off the DSA licenses to a new company extra founded for that purpose, and sold off the Battletech and Shadowrun to Catalyst Games. That... didn't work out and FanPro went down in 2012.

.....Naming this the 'Curse of BattleRun'! Anyone who owns the license for Shadowrun and BattleTech apparently makes -stupid financial decisions-. FASA went and pulled their LAM cock-up, then FanPro apparently went and said 'Hey, let's sell off the things that make us money and -not- sell off the things that don't!' and Catalyst Games said 'FASA had a good idea, let's try that, it's been 15 years! Nobody'll remember that shit, right?'.

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

Five out of five Picards agree. That shit be -stupid-.

It's okay, HareBrained Schemes is giving us a turn-based strategy game next year for Battletech, and Mechwarrior online is pretty good.

And both have iterations of the Unseen. They're similar enough we can tell what they are, but different enough to not get sued.

Battletech's what got me into Giant Robots aeons ago, so I'm glad it's not really dead.

This was a fun chapter, too, though Stacker being Toji's stepdad is a bit of a head-scratcher.

I like the idea that the "average grunt" will be piloting Battlemechs/Destroids; they'll probably still have casualties, but not as many, and they may actually be able to help against Angels.
Sounds like Stripes is gonna be helping pilot either a Jaeger, or a Command Mech!

Well, Catalyst Games is still around. And holding the rights since 2007, so hey, going strong. Longer than FanPro and only two more years and they've caught FASA. Though, 5th Edition Shadowrun sucks :p (and really, early 4th Edition books just looked... more professional, in a way)

Don't forget their Shadowrun video game. A TF2 ripoff with 'magic'.

Facepalm.

CG's only still around probably because of Mechwarrior Online and microtransactions. I know I've been tempted to drop money in that pit....

EDIT: Oh, motherfucker. I just revved up MWO for the first time in like, a year, and the first thing I saw on the launcher was almost a spot-on copy of a Tomahawk destroid with different arms. Goddamnit, CG! Don't copy the LAM dustup -completely-!

The potential cash cow is a powerful bait.

Too bad they forgot that cow was 'improved' by Crazy Ivan.

I'm guessing Stripes got the Destroid Monster, instead. (AKA the Walking Battleship Turret.)

For what it's worth, it's not just Harmony Gold preventing new Macross stuff from being internationally licensed; it's the overall spat between Harmony Gold and Big West (the main Japanese franchise owner). Harmony Gold was reportedly perfectly willing (albeit expensive) to license Macross Zero, but Big West outright refused to deal with them.

Plus additional complications with Tatsunoko's limited ownership based on the footage they did for the original Macross series, AND all the music rights, which are licensed separately.

Apparently Macross Delta's blu-ray release has English subtitles, and Japan and the US share a blu-ray code... but that also means paying Japanese blu-ray prices, which still makes this release virtually unavailable to anyone unwilling to spare a kidney for the endeavor.

No, Sergeant Strauss. You and I will be in this monster.

Was it that obvious? It was that obvious, wasn't it? Ooooh, I knew it would be obvious. *looks over the last page a half of cluelessness*

...I'm either supposed to say 'never mind' or 'now I feel old'. Dunno which.

Anyway.

2-69-3 New Mechanized Battle Robot Inventory!

1x MAC-II (Mechanized Assault Cruiser) Monster
12x MBR-07 Spartan
20x MBR-04 Tomahawk

@Strypgia can deal with painting the suckers. It's his BN, not mine. :V

So, to fight monsters, the US Army created a Monster of their own?

Gah! Here I am.

I'll say right now; this is very original. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to do a more comprehensive read-through before offering anything deeper than that. Keep up the good work!

So how big, physically, is Shinji's cyborg body if he has to arrive on the back of a truck?

Thanks to growth hormones, metal endoskeleton, grafts, artificial organs because of failures of actual organs thanks to -severely strong- medicines used after his initial surgery as a kid...he's about six and a half feet tall. The problem isn't -size-, though. It's weight. He's easily throwing around 400+ pounds of weight without his 'complete' covering. Focusing all of that into the small area of a truck cab is a bit of a risk.

He's also bulky as hell, and sitting in a cramped space with a guy half-made out of metal? Not comfortable.

His size and weight? Truck bed's the easiest way to get around, especially when he can link with the onboard computer and drive just as easily from outside the car as inside it.

It's even at about the scale I need, too! This is a Tomahawk. Stripes and Jake are not going to be in this.
Robotech was one of the first animes I watched (Sailor moon was the other, god bless Toonami and bob). Battletech was one of the first PC games I got into.

Coincidentally, you can still pre-order the Battletech game that's coming out. It's not even that pricey.

Aaaaaaaand caught up!

I'm also pretty uncultured when it comes to giant robot shenanigans, so you'll have to forgive me for not catching perhaps 90% of the references you make. :V

That said:

Of course, that had been when the voices began, and Rei had begun taking her medicine and 'controlling' them by hiding the voices behind the walls of her 'characters'. It had been Shinji who had first noticed that Rei was more....calm, more composed, when she....wasn't Rei. Was it any wonder she loved her Onii-chan so?

Still, she reflected, her brother was a nice boy, a too too nice boy, and wouldn't want her to be mean.

There was nothing strong about him, either. If he'd been strong, he wouldn't have needed his father to come and save him, to hold his hand, when his uncle had beaten him. If only he'd been strong....maybe Asuka and Rei wouldn't have to put up with him.
Classic warning signs that things are not quite right, but it wouldn't be Evangelion otherwise, so...

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
