Ordeal By Fire: An Avatar the Last Airbender GSRP

Name: Captain Cai Cuifeng
Pronouns: He/Him
Archetype: Sailor
Politics: Fire Imperialism
Earth: 2 Water: 1 Fire: 3 Air: 2
Bender: Fire
Starting Location: Eastern Isles
Bio: "Do not loose a murderer to clear a cell for a thief. Do not blame an instrument for the musician's false note. All credit to the proper cause and all things in their proper place, man."

The wisdom of Cai's grandfather came to him as he treaded for his life. Brilliant, deserved victory had been stolen from the fleet by a walking Leviathan of a fish. Fascinating beast. Translucent, seemingly wrought from pure light and water. Smashed his legs worse than he'd done Aunt Mei's favorite urn, too.

He was lucky enough to be fished out of the icy water by the primitives and exchanged back when hostilities ended, but first he'd done some thinking. Who to blame? Not the glorious Admiral Zhao, of course, and not the simple waterbenders. Not the see-through fish. No, no. Captain Cuifeng was a spiritual man, he had been with tribesmen and in the temples. He knew, with a vague but burning certainty, that it was Water itself that had struck the fleet down, that same Water that had haunted the Cuifeng name.

Who else? What greater villain for this worldly piece? As he lay in his sickbed, drenched in sweat, he dreamt of his slain maritime ancestors, crushed, drowned, swallowed. What Hundred Year War could compare to the eternal war waged by the sea? What mortal prison could compare to the hellish and unfathomable deep?

For months Cuifeng's command has raged against the arrogant spirits and their storm, but there is no escape. Now, finally, he comes about. It is time to sail home, to raise his blade for Azula and against an unbearable peace.

The Fire Nation shall be restored. Then he can depart on his true mission, hidden from all but his most trusted officers, to conquer the tempest and calm the wave. He will plunder the secrets of the waterbenders, and among them find a way to do what the great Zhao could never have dreamt:

Kill the Water Spirit.

Name: Ichizo Shimari
Pronouns: He/Him
Archetype: Sailor
Politics: Fire Colonialist
Earth: 1
Water: 3
Fire: 2
Air: 2
Bender: Yes, Water (Untrained)
Starting Location: Eastern Islands

Bio: Ichizo was born in what had once been a small fishing village by the sea- which had been turned into a bustling naval outpost by the Hundred Year War. He was the sole product of a deeply unhappy "marriage" between a Fire Navy "war hero" of the Southern Raiders, and a woman he'd captured. His mother died shortly after he was born- the heat of the Islands never having agreed with her- and Ichizo ran away to sea as soon as he could, first as a fisherman and then in the Navy.

He spent the next five years sailing the waters of the South Pole and the Earth Kingdom. He found no glory and certainly no medals, but he did find out two new things about himself. Firstly, that he had a knack for playing angles and making deals, and talking his crewmates into going along with it. And secondly, that sometimes, alone on night watches, he could almost feel the currents moving on their invisible course, and sense the changing tides as if they were part of his own body.

And then, while on watch late one night, he nearly lost his balance in a sudden squall. He reached out a hand to grab a railing- and his tea leapt right out of its cup.

He quickly found an excuse to leave the navy, and a respectable career combined with a nest egg he'd squirreled away gave him the cash to buy up an older sailing ship. He'd started his own shipping company with his former crew- and a few more years of lucrative trading with the colonies (and some even more profitable if far less legitimate trading with the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom) saw him turn that vessel into a motley fleet of steam and sailing ships, plying the waters of the world and especially the Fire Islands.

Trade in wartime is a tough, hardscrabble business, with plenty of brushes with smuggling and piracy. It has hardened Ichizo's heart and honed his instincts. It has only further confirmed his view that this world is cold and unkind to those who cannot make their own way in it.

Ichizo is not a devoted imperialist, but he is committed to the life he has painstakingly built for himself- one that will be hard to maintain if Zuko gives up the Colonies to the Earth King, as rumors say he will. He respects and fears Azula and her subordinates- and as a former navy man, he has more confidence in her fleet than Zuko's. It is time, he has decided, to get off the fence, and offer his services to the Crown in hopes of a lucrative payoff.

Bio:

Vice Admiral Zo
A spurned admiral out for her ship

"This is so not funny!"

Zo had the distinct honor of being born dirt poor in the Colonies. She knew it from the hungry nights and the fleas in her hair. A can of misplaced Nori-banded salmon was the pinnacle of her culinary experience. As for the fleas, a quick shave took care of them. Her other needs were satisfied by dancing, singing, and shoeshining.

One of her customers, a Fire Nation captain, said he wanted her aboard his frigate: Koh's Wake. Zo laughed him off at first. She even did her special Yu Dao shuffle. The captain did not laugh. He happened to be an expert at shanghaiing others too.

Her naval career began soon after. She mopped the deck by day and yodeled at night. The crew was good to her. After all, she kept them entertained. Her midnight yarns were a real knee-slapper. The food wasn't bad either. She had regular meals for once. What really sealed the deal was her first skirmish with pirates.

She flew from Koh's Wake to the enemy ship. Her crew mates watched as the young girl knocked the lights out of her opponents. Two things were discovered: one, she had the resilience to match her recklessness; two, she enjoyed being in the middle of a fight. Her place on the roster moved up a few notches.

Zo never questioned her orders just as she never refused a customer before. Perhaps she was wise to the ways of the world. Or maybe she was just not very bright to begin with. It helped that she wasn't dispatched to either pole. Her promotion to vice admiral came on the back of her inoffensive record. Although she would claim it was her ability to surf on a flying dolphin fish that clinched it.

Discipline was not highly valued in her book as no one messed around there. However, karaoke was mandatory. One junior who made a big splash at them, Okono Nori, pulled her aside and offered her an all-you-can-eat ticket to a restaurant connected to his family.

When Zo returned with a full stomach, one of her ships was gone. She vowed to get it back. Since the person who informed her of the theft was for the royal princess, she donned the colors of the blue faction. Her role in the civil war was to snore loudly when other people discussed "grand strategy". She did wake up when the Turtleduck was mentioned. Wise to her nature, Zo's staff used the ship as bait to get her to do her job. She has yet to realize this.

Name: Tamaguzuka, High Sage of the Phoenix State

Pronouns: She/her
Archetype: Monk
Politics: Enlightened Absolutism
Earth: 1 Water: 2 Fire: 2 Air: 3
Bender: Fire
Starting Location: Amagi

Bio: The product of a corrupt Eastern Island monk and a sailing woman from a long line of Fifth Nation pirates. 'Uzuka was wholly unfit for the clergy in temperament but became obsessed by the same legend that drove her mother to waste her life searching - for the lost Tribe of Bhanti, whom Ma-san claimed to have been saved from a shipwreck by years before. Where her mother could never find the island again, her father was keen to find it's secrets in the holy texts and conscripted 'Uzuka into both the research and the monastic life.

While training fruitlessly to recreate the art of Fire Healing her mother had experienced first hand, 'Uzuka was dispatched to do a monk's work - exorcizing dark spirits and hungry ghosts from Yosor to Jang Hui. Along the way she grew more and more heretical, beyond even her father, collecting witchcraft and initiating with profane cults to synthesize ancient power in a new form. Finally returning to confront the Crescent Temple monks with her newfound zeal, she killed her father in the struggle, was oustered from the Fire Sages and imprisoned in a newfound asylum. That is, until being discovered by the…perceptive General Sikai and his air fleet and being invited to the rebel capital in Amagi.

Building up her ritual center and proving herself with "miracles" among the Phoenix Lord's noble and military hangers on, the Amagi Declaration and turn away from aristocratic supremacy has allowed her to now join the desperate court as a High Sage willing to cosign Agni monotheism in her obsessive quest for ancient shamanic lore.

Name: Sheng Yang
Pronouns: He/Him
Archetype: Sailor
Politics: Harmonism (Draconic Rule Sympathetic)
Earth: 1 Water: 2 Fire: 2 Air: 3
Bender: Yes, Fire
Starting Location: Da Zhen
Bio:
Born to a noble family with a long history of military service dating back to the Warring States period (possibly a fabrication), young Yang was destined to continue the family tradition of soldiers. Just under the age of 20, a teenaged Yang volunteered for the Fire Navy, after some education courses on important skills like navigation, calculus, etc… he became enrolled into the Navy as an officer, thanks to some good relationships on his family's part of course.

While his advantageous start compared to many officers might be due to nepotism, Yang's skills as a naval commander soon should not be discounted, as his talent for leading men along with his own significant firebending skills contributed a significant part for his rise in the naval hierarchy.

The Hundred Years War had entered its 35th year when Yang began his first combat duty, he quickly proved himself to be a competent and reliable subordinate to his superior officers, and as a harsh but fair disciplinarian to men under his purview, with this alongside his family's relentless lobbying, even more promotions.

Years of fighting had made the Southern Water Tribe completely lose the ability to mount any effective resistance to the Fire Nation's destruction of their homeland. While a great calamity for them, for the men and women that masterminded their destruction, this had resulted in high positions and rewards, with Yang being one of the major beneficiaries, becoming a Commander. This is also when his relationships with his superiors declined.

Yang, like his fellow naval colleagues, did not hold any particular sympathies to the peoples suffering under the depredations of their military. But after careful look of military intelligence, Yang became quickly convinced of needless waste of the regular military sweep campaigns after what he believed to be "The total annihilation of the enemy's combat capabilities", armed with this opinion, he relentless argued with both fellow officers and superiors in significant reduction in military presence to focus on combating sea raiders and aiding the campaign in the Earth Kingdom. Due to his outspoken opinion, he painted a target behind his back, and became a recipient of slander from fellow officers to remove a rival.

At risk of potentially getting dishonorably discharged due to the amount of accusations levied against him, Yang was luckily saved by his family again, and he was transferred to the Earth Kingdom's theater to serve as a subordinate for a family friend, Admiral Zheng. There he displayed his usual competence, suppressing pirates, coordinating troop landings, destroying any fleets that Earth Kingdom could still raise. Despite all of these overwhelming victories, the chance of complete capitulation remains low, with Yang increasingly wondering when the war will end. Fortunately his superior is of the same opinion to him in this, with Admiral Zheng becoming increasingly cynical about the ability to occupy the entire Earth Kingdom, combined with his interaction and eventual influence by a small conservative circle that advocated "harmonism". Thanks to his closeness to Zheng, Yang was also able to interact with this circle, although he did not share their spiritual beliefs, he found their points about the war convincing, aligning with his personal thoughts. After Zheng's retirement, Yang finally reached the status of an Admiral, the culmination of years of tireless service. Despite all this however, his opinion on the general war effort declined steadily, and he continuously butted heads with his fellow commanders on the war effort, earning him powerful enemies. Eventually scandal broke out, both him and the retired Admiral Zheng was exposed to have links with a seditious circle, only thanks to his family's links within the military, was Yang not suffer the fate of being jailed and being on trial for treason, though he was formally stripped of command and retired in disgrace. With that a tireless 30 years of service came to an ignoble end.

After his retirement, Yang lived a quiet, and cautious life, his relationship declined with the rest of his family, who viewed his conduct brought disgrace to them, and the suspicion of authorities. Despite this, Yang himself thought much on both his conduct on the war and the teachings of that secret circle he interacted with before. This changed with the reappearance of the Avatar, which caught him flat footed, slowly shifting his opinion into Harmonism, the rapid defeat of Firelord Ozai made him a believer, though with some reservations.

While Yang did not intend to take up any military duties after the ascension of new Firelord Zuko, the prospect of Civil War changed all that. Due to the defection of many high ranking naval personnel to Azula, many retired officers were sought, even Yang, who was in his 70s was asked to become naval instructor. He eventually took the responsibility of training new personnel in Da Zhen, where he also became aware of the new religious fervor for the Firelord, which he was skeptical of, before news of Zuko riding a Dragon mount reached Da Zhen.

Following the raid of Cai Cuifeng upon Da Zhen, and the destruction of many naval assets and precious personnel that the Zukoites had. Sheng Yang, disgraced admiral, a man long past his prime, an officer of the days of Azulon, stepped up to take command of the remaining naval forces in Da Zhen.

The Old Admiral returns….

War Minister Aiyaza
A visionary who doesn't take "no!" for an answer

"You can't make an omelet without cracking some eggs, right? Same with this whole doohickey I created."
If Amagi is the engine to pierce the primitivism of the world, Aiyaza is the fireman.

She was born to that class of people who could recall a time when the clans ruled without a supreme master. Her privileged station allowed her the space to indulge a ravenous curiosity. Servants would bring scrolls to her room, and they would take away the legs of insects she had plucked one by one. But it was not enough for her to study the nature of things as they were. It was too static. Instead, she would conquer the mysteries put forward through introduction of new theories, new practices, and new technologies.

War Minister Qin spotted a bubbling talent in Aiyaza and took her under his wing. While it was only one field in the wide arc of her tastes, the weapons he made delighted her. War was an environment which tested innovation like no other. Her correspondence with the Mechanist shined with an idealism that had sinister undertones. Near the end, she declared with flourish that the very spirits which held the foundation of existence would be outdone through the progress of humanity in due time. Needless to say, she was out of office when Fire Lord Zuko came to power.

Aiyaza's return to relevance came with Azula's escape. Here was a court receptive to her ideals. Or, at the very least, the expertise she brought. Did she feel some regret at the accumulated knowledge of the old war being unleashed on her own people? Maybe. But consider the misfortune brought upon the Fire Nation by the Peace faction. They allowed superstition to hold the islands hostage. Then they beg the Avatar, the great retrograde of history, to free them. Quite regrettable.

Archetypes
Now that turn 3 is almost fully over and turn 4 is starting, I have a small announcement to make. For those characters who have been here since the start, I will issue out secondary archetypes, which are things that though not as experienced at and fully apt to embodying, they are nonetheless skilled enough to have become an archetype of their own. For characters who joined later, this will start being possible once they have survived for three turns. I say possible because not all characters, though most, will necessarily get a second archetype. On to the characters:

Aroye: Engineer & Worker
Combustion Man: Criminal & Revolutionary
General Sikai: Officer & Scholar
Kaizawa: Officer & Soldier
Shangba: Revolutionary & Soldier
Juzo Ze: Officer & Bureaucrat
Yoshiro Kaga: Scholar & Bureaucrat
Meng Taori: Sailor & Officer
Cyo Krane: Officer & Soldier
Tadashi Kenji: Soldier & Officer
Ozen Hanma: Engineer & Entrepeneur
Haga: Peasant & Scholar
Peng Liu: Bureaucrat & Noble
Azuh Zuru: Officer & Soldier
Iwa Kuro: Noble & Officer
Raku Kasai: Worker & Revolutionary
Pico Toloph (if alive): Revolutionary & Spy
Bujing: Soldier & Officer

Also, applications remain open, edits for Burning Point to come soon. Stats and the like to be finished this week, Kaya edits to come soon, and deadline to be set no later than this friday.

Avatar Shattered Stone 2: Shattering Harder IC

TURN 1 UPDATE - Section One (Ba Sing Se) From the work of Scribe Fei Zhong, page thirteen- Events in the world’s greatest city began explosively and only became more dramatic as time went on. Feng Zhou, Grand Secretariat and (after an efficient and murderous coup) now Regent in the name of King...

This actually is the second attempt by the mod to run something akin to this. Thankfully this attempt lasted longer.

Name: Phrakhu Somkit
Pronouns: He/Him
Archetype: Monk
Politics: Sage Rule
Earth: 2
Water: 3
Fire: 0
Air: 3
Bender: Yes, FIre (Dancer)
Starting Location: Kuza Island

Phrakhu was a Monk who had seen Kuza Island grow worse and worse over the rule of the fire lords more disrespect to the spirits, more of the environment destroyed away for the indrusty of the fire nation. The people growing more and more distant to the ground beneath there feet and what all around them focus on greed, conquest, pride ect. All the while the spirits grew more and more angered over the disrespect to them the storm that cut them off was a last chance to fix the fire nations mistakes. At first it truly seemed like it was under the Wise rule of Akemi Cho things were changing for the better on Kuza Island. The spirits were being respected again! The enviroment was starting to prosper people no longer had to worry about there children or there animals dying from pollution. The spirits were starting to be content again, the people had all the food they needed truly it was a joyous time. He fire danced like he had never had before so full of joy and life content to play a small part in his little temple following Akemi Cho wise leadership. And then when we offered a great offering to the spirits and they emerged... oh when emerged Akemi Cho full of glory and a dragon! He was so sure a beautiful age was ahead of us...then Akemi died...then azula brought chaos and fire to the island...all the progress washed away in fire and blood.

He...even though his heart breaks from hope being so cruelly taken away. Even though he can barely fire dance with joy like he once did, even though he wishes to disapper within the forest and never turn. He must keep try to dancing no matter how hard it may be to shoulder on so Akemi vison!! is not forever lost...no matter the cost
