Old World Blues (Fallout nation quest)

Basically when you play Lanius there is a path where you ally with the cyborg Diana and becomes a true Roman. From what I understand people latched on it rather hard.
Speaking if which, is theres options for to be more than ally with Diana(like maybe, make her the subordinate(through persuasion or hacking her ti alter her) or maybe backstab her, etc...) ? Just wondering, cause i think the original route in OWB were rather lacking(like, lacking make full use of the techs and the sciences that Diana had compared to Twin Mother's focus trees) and not to its full potentials.

And because theres this dead quest in QQ where Lanius manage to debate with Diana and WIN, and ablw to convince her to work for/with Legion, much to the hilarity of the whole situation(and sorta make sense, Diana were scientist before she werr shoved into computer, so not necessarily great at the social and "being persuaded" part, and she spend the rest of her time with tribals that worshipped her instead if treating her as a person or an equal.).

How could Lanius accomplish any of those things?

I'm not snide btw but hacking a Pre-War cyborg supercomputer? Doki Doki could perhaps do it or the Brotherhood, and I have doubt on that fronts for everyone not named Elijah. Lanius even if you pick the Reborn which is Lanius the Enclave soldier is not going to have the technical knowhow on where to begin this.

Persuading her to make you her consort and the leader of the Twin Mothers while she remains in the Nursery and provides you with all the tech? That's easier as her vision of the southern United States can work with a Roman Republic society.

Although a path who is going to be possible would be to refuse the alliance with her, pursue the Twin Mothers in the Nursery, kill Diana while limiting the collateral damage and try to understand the place. That would mean being convinced to spare the scientific teams to study it.

Now that I think about it, Elijah could be a candidate for an alternate alliance as he would be able to usurp control. Even if I doubt SV voters will stomach working under him.

This quest is going to use a variant of the system Telamon use for his own. You have Lanius whose character sheet is going to be the next post as well as several other characters you'll be able to hire. These characters will be allocated to actions and roll for them, representing personal input in the life of the nation.

I hesitated for the characteristics but we're going to keep that simple and use the good old SPECIAL.

Strength governs rolls for melee weapons, unarmed combat and warfare
Perception governs rolls for ranged weapons, gun development and explosives
Endurance governs rolls for survival and animal handling
Charisma governs rolls for convincing, bartering and negotiating
Intelligence governs rolls for science, repair and medicine
Agility governs rolls for subterfuge, sneaking and subtle action
Luck is a bit special in that it gives half its bonuses to all other rolls.

For the levels it's easy, each point above 5 in a stat gives +10 and stats go from 1 to 10

Turn 1: January-April 2275
Turn 1: January-April 2275
By order of Caesar, the annals of the Legion were silent on the origins of the Lanius, covering him in a shroud of obfuscation. It is known now he was like Graham a member of New Canaan and a follower of Moroni. He had studied and talked with the Followers of Apocalypse when they reached the tribes of the Grand Canyon and learned much of medicine and the secrets of the Old World. It is unclear why he followed Caesar in the building of the Legion but then the same question can be asked of Graham. The faith they adopted did not see ancient Rome with favor, especially what Caesar wished to take from it. Perhaps something had broken in him long ago as he was fed with zealous fervor. Or perhaps he cast eyes since the beginning on the throne of the Dominus, content to let Caesar build the empire he would inherit and consecrate. What was true is he was a student of the blade wise in its wielding, a terror of battlefields who helped put Arizona to the torch.

Now he was in Castra Sol Rubium, half of the City of Red Sun given to him by Caesar. Even he knew his capital had been made to hobble him. Beyond the bridges was the territory of the Legion and its arsenal and its garrisons. If he decided to betray the Imperator, armies would march directly into the heart of his power. It was the custom of the Legion, at least for those not born in it. Lanius the Butcher did not care. He would put New Mexico in chains, brining back wonders and slaves before being unleashed again. Or at least it was what seemed even as he gave order and occupied himself with grisly amusements.

You can assign Lanius to three (3) actions

Recruitment

Frumentarius:
Frumentarii are the eyes of the Legion and its hidden hands. They are the masters of shadows and the scream in the night. The Butcher does not keep with some of their ways for they are masters of betrayal. Yet reconnaissance, terrifying the enemy, negotiating with those who would join the Legion. A Frumentarius can do so and more. Agility/Charisma

Flamen Mars :
No god stands above mighty Mars, lord of war and slaughter and father of Caesar. His red-robed priests are warriors but this is not their main role. They are those who manage the morale of the Legion, who encourage its atrocities, who ensure the decrees of the Dominus are kept. They are bloody-handed champions on the battlefield and the diviners of the gods' decrees outside of it. Strength/Charisma

Flamen Vulcan :
The iron-adorned priests of Vulcan the lame, god of the forge, are in charge of the forges and the smithies. They are those who judge the technology preceding the sundering of the world, seeing what may be kept by the Legion and what must cast back into the fire. They maintain the rare sophisticated artifacts of the Legion and manage its logistic train. Unlike the priests of Mars chosen among the troops, the brotherhood of Vulcan recruits in secret and even among slaves. Intelligence/Perception

Skinwalker:
The Navajo are an exception to all tribes met by the Legion. So fierce was their resistance and so enduring their culture Caesar knew them as allies, perhaps the only true allies of the Legion. They live in peace as first among the Socii and keep their councils and their laws. They still provide a tithe of auxiliaries and most renowned are their Skinwalkers who so terrorized the Legion in the days of war. Each is a survival specialist, a tamer of beasts and a covert operative specializing in raids. Endurance/Agility

Castra Sol Rubium
Reopen the Markets:
The tastes of Lanius are of war but he is no ignorant beast despite his moniker. The mission of the Legion is to bring order to the chaotic wasteland. It's time to reform Castra Sol Rubium to attract its own population of Socii and the associated slaves. Then it will be possible to begin to rely on the local economy and production to outfit the eastern troops.

Widen the Bridges: Caesar insists the Lanius brings blood to Dog City alone. Yet he is no fool. The arsenals of the Legion are still open to the Legate provided he pays. Negotiating with the merchants on the other side of the river will be the first step. Then in exchange of slaves and treasures the Lanius will have the armaments of his campaign.

Scouring the Land: The cohort has seized the territory of the Lambda and other tribes near Castra Sol Rubium, establishing their own citadels. An organized sweep of the land to ascertain Pre-War sites is a good idea. These are generally left alone by superstitious tribals and whatever their manifold sins, the people of the Old World built to last with their weapons still useable centuries later. In the worst case, these ruins can be inhabited by raiders bands who need to be impressed in the Legion or crucified.

The Legion
Venatores:
The Legion is not composed of men alone, from the tribes it devoured, it learned the arts of taming beasts of war. While true houndmasters must wait the end of Dog City, packs are still reared in the kennels of the castrum. The pen masters tend to be eccentric as they have several ideas for the beasts who range the wasteland from Molerats to Geckos passing through monstrous snakes and the Deathclaws. This is a dangerous path but the rewards at the end seem sumptuous.

Aqua Ignis:
While the Legion rightly shun the energy weapons of yore, considering their making to be beyond them and thus their use except as vanity equipment small, explosives have no reason to be rejected. Many tribes absorbed into the ranks had their recipes of flaming mixtures for makeshift grenades. Creating true demolition squads could be devastating, especially if these mixtures can be added to pre-war flamethrowers.

Sagitarii: Even if true combat must be close, so that the target may see their killer's eyes, suppression fire is still a good tactics. Remaking the "storm-drums" of yesteryear will be difficult even if reserves of the weapons are plentiful. They should help keep the foe in place while the other units position themselves for the charge.

Gladii:
The Blades are an idea of the Lanius, inspired by his own combat skill. One would think except the most primitive of tribals, melee combat would have died of. Those thinking that underestimate the effect of a band of zealots in reasonably good armor for the wastes, charging without fear with machetes or even bladed fists. The question on how to bring them in range is a good one but once they do, they will be able to wreck quite a slaughter.

Military Actions
Neighbors: The Archdiocese of Santa Fe:
To the north, in the ruins of forgotten Santa Fe, the remnants of the Church Catholic have survived. They have organized the land under a theocracy, providing the communities with order and restarting the tradition of monastic militant orders to fight against the raider bands of the region. Their monasteries are reputedly full of pre-War books for the monks have taken anew the traditions of copying what they managed to conserve from the Old World. The Legion made contact with them but the society Caesar has made is inimical to their form of Christianity, not helped by the fact Graham and the Lanius considers the Church as heretical.

Neighbors: The Blue Rose Society: To the south the camps of the Blue Rose Society look fearfully to the heavens. They are a cult of Hubologists having unified the land near Roswell under the remnants of the military. They have redeveloped the astronomical sciences and managed to secure a small reserve of top-of the line military equipment. They are very hostile to the Legion as they seek technological development to fight against a foe they say coming from the stars. Rumors abound about their mathematicians-priests and the strange artifacts their leadership used to disintegrate the Raider Prince Tom of the Bleeding Eye. Some years ago the Frumentarii managed to infiltrate their ranks and murder their director, yet was discovered by the current head of state and promptly executed. His reports were apparently disquieting even to Vulpes.

Flamen Mars : No god stands above mighty Mars, lord of war and slaughter and father of Caesar. His red-robed priests are warriors but this is not their main role. They are those who manage the morale of the Legion, who encourage its atrocities, who ensure the decrees of the Dominus are kept. I feel it good to lay the ground work before brutally butchering all our neighbours.

Pretty much the above plan but entirely focused on building our logistics.

Very much onboard with a huge focus on improving our capabilities. Very excited to see more about this altered legion :3

Amen for that. i wish we would get more access to more techs than what Lanius get in the Lanius+Diana route, especially given that Diana had access to satellite, and had route that once completed can produce GECKs, which lets just say having it as a trump card is an understatement.

I suggest while we attack next turn, we pick "scouring the land" as well, to check if we may found something for the Vulcans to get busy

edit: some interesting image i found

These images are absolutely what I envision for the Sagitarii fireteams.

Now for Diana tech, I must see in her own campaign what her focuses encourages. I know she has robots but frankly her faction has mostly civilian technology. Which could absolutely changes things in the Wasteland, I mean the mere possibility of making a society with the pre-War infant mortality rate and agricultural capabilities would make any nation a potential superpower.

All right, this one looks like a good combination.

Turn 1: Results
Turn 1: Results
For the Legion, the year 2275 began with a fury of preparations. Caesar had chosen to expand in several directions at the same time, having grown confident in the strength of his officer corps to engage in several campaigns. It was a risky endeavor. Three quarters of the Legion prepared their departure, to the West, the South and the East. Caesar kept for himself his pretorian guard, regiments raised and trained to serve him personally as well as the greatest of the Frumentarii, even if the three commanders knew some were embedded in their ranks. The objective of the Dominus was clearly stated. He desired to seize the city of New Vegas and the Hoover Dam, having always thought to return westwards and put the NCR to which he belonged once to the yoke. The missions given to the Lanius or Aurelius the Phoenix, were but training exercises in his mind, allowing him to secure more resources for the campaign who would follow the takeover of the Mojave. Aurelius was sent to Mexico, serving among the arms merchants of the Gente del Sol, seeking to persuade them to join the Legion proper and conquer Mexico, as well as ensuring the flow of weapon would still cross the Rio Grande. The Lanius was sent eastwards to secure another resource entirely: People. It was clear the lands of New Mexico were full of tribes who could be harnessed to the Legion's end.

He thought he needed such resources for news still came from abroad to Flagstaff. Despite the contempt he held his former country in, Caesar had never ceased to consider them as an exception in the wastes, at least until he met the powers of Mexico. The New California Republic had formed what could be called the greatest state of the western wastelands. The number of forces it could place on the battlefield and the raw might of its industry fueled a remarkable expansion. For the moment it was still tolerating the Shi of San Francisco and their forces and had not destroyed the Brotherhood of Steel entirely. Still their tendrils were felt north in Vault City and New Reno, and to the south among the pirates and traders of Baja. Under the leadership of Aaron Kimball they seemed poised to seize lands just like the Roman Empire Caesar had took for inspiration. The Dominus had built the Legion as weapons for his glory but he did not intend to waste his blow.

So he was quite surprised by the actions of his legate. While Longinus sent scouts westwards to ascertain the best passages on the Colorado and likely fortifications sites, Lanius remained in Castra Sol Rubium where he focused on improving the city. Scores of slaves were at work building more bridges and harbors on the great river, allowing for traffic from the west. A call was sent to the Socii promising the loot of the future campaigns if they established themselves in the city and made its industry live again. Caesar ascertained this conduct was not a breach of his orders. While he had declared Lanius would not be allowed to take the Legion's resources, he could very well buy them. The scribes of Caesar would note what he owed to the state. The Butcher also made contact with the priests as was his right, calling to Castra Sol Rubium the servants of mighty Vulcan. They established their temple, a dark underground edifice where they poured over ancient tomes and plans. Something attracted them in the depths of the earth for they remembered their fathers had sheltered there against the end of the world and the might of the Legion.

The Flamines Vulcani were a secretive order. It was whispered they had begun as members of the Brotherhood of Steel dispersed across Arizona before the Legion broke them. They had bargained their survival with Caesar who forbade them the use of their fantastic armor but put them to protect his people from the Old World's temptations. They had been joined with disgraced Followers of the Apocalypse and other groups strange and sundry. As they managed the forges of the Castrum, one of them came to the attention of Lanius and rose high in his council.

Gaïus Quirinus
was said among his brothers to have come from an accursed line. For indeed his grandparents had come from the Boneyard of Los Angeles in the following of the army of Attis, this great remnants of Unity. They had been of those called the Children of the Cathedral who had served the inhuman Master and they still taught some of the lore they had learned in forgotten Mariposa. It was no secret among his brethren Gaïus was fascinated with the holy unseen flame who protected some of the ruins of the Old World. He was renowned for his capacity to wade even in the most tainted ruin without harm and his poring over designs of weapons employing radiation to kill. Of course, it was common wisdom scant few material remained to make these wondrous weapons. Except if one would brave the craters of the harrowing of the world.

Marcus Vibius
was marked in the fashion of his chosen god. Whatever work his mother did twisted him in her womb until he looked like a nightmare, completely hairless and chalk-white skin ravaged with sores. Yet what the gods had taken from his flesh, they had given his mind. He looked at numbers and equations and saw their languages, understanding the principles of the Old World science like if he was a child of this profligate age. He was gifted in all arts of repair and science and was one of the rare in the Legion to outfit himself with a great rifle shooting deadly light. Some whispered he was so grieved by his weakness he sought to remedy it by his arts, which was forbidden under the law of Caesar. Still he confessed knowledge of many brews and mixtures who allowed him to walk under his own power and not be useless in battle.

Gallio Marcius
had been trained as a warrior and a leader since his task had always been to supervise the forges of the army in a land beset by raiders. He knew the arts of breaking slaves and the arts of negotiating, having learned how to feed the relentless army of the Legion in wheat or material. He was not the greatest of his order by a long shot and confessed no understanding of the sciences. His gift was in the maintenance of equipment and the refinement of the process. He was fascinated by the factories of the Old World and how they had eaten metals to spit out weapons and other items. His hunger for ore was greater than any other desires of the flesh and it was whispered he had slain more slaves than the arenas of Flagstaff in the mines and the smithies. Nothing out of his hands was a masterwork but he could help the outfitting of a cohort.

I am in favor of this because the power of the old worlds secrets can be used to modernize our capabilities in key areas.

Likewise there is many ruins of the old world that have wildly useful benefits.
