Getting Promoted

Sakura, Naruto and I had trained like mad for the past six months just for this moment. I had told them of my status as a time traveller and pushed them as hard as they could take, with an entire month on a special technique of my own devising that had nearly killed us to learn on multiple occasions. We somehow either managed to avoid notice or our training appeared sufficiently harmless that Kakashi had let us continue.

We planned on abusing our opponent's arrogance and the fact that they would underestimate us to kill them.

"You want our Earth Scroll, don't you?" The person speaking swallowed 'her' scroll, "Well, let's begin... the battle for the scrolls. Life or Death!"

I activated my three tomoe Sharingan and smirked at Orochimaru, who was currently wearing the skin of a grass genin, "It was gutless of you to come here, snake face."

He looked back at me, annoyed I'd apparently guessed who he is, "Oh, and why is that?"

My voice came from behind him as a cloned lightning-enhanced sword cleaved through his throat, "Because suicide is the coward's way out!"

I began molding chakra for the replacement technique as his body began to dissolve into mud. I released it as a hand shot out of the ground below me, and my perspective abruptly shifted.

"I WON'T LET YOU TOUCH HIM!" came Sakura's cry as she tilted forward from where I had been standing, her arm cocked back for a haymaker. The hand vanished back into the ground as she threw her punch and turned the ground into a rising field of boulders. Several great trees fell towards the ground as their roots were obliterated.

Orochimaru's figure leapt out of one of the crevices that had formed... right into a pair of Narutos that were holding a sphere of chakra, "Take this! RASENGAN!"

He hit the body snatcher right in the side, and sent Orochimaru hurtling through several trees. A moment later, his face extended towards me alongside an enormous snake as he rushed back towards us. Naruto and Sakura prepared themselves while a pair of Naruto clones blasted the snake away with another Rasengan.

I merely stared at Orochimaru and activated my Mangekyo Sharingan. Orochimaru's eyes widened, and he hesistated.

"Amaterasu."

Orochimaru fled his burning body with his snakeskin shedding replacement technique and began to retreat, "Guh, impossible! Perhaps next time..."

Naruto jumped onto Sakura's outstretched fist and she launched him into the sky in the direction Orochimaru had begun to flee towards with an enhanced throw. A moment later it was filled with clouds of orange hurtling towards the ground, more spheres of chakra between them.

"You're not getting away! RASENGAN BARRAGE!"

As the expanding orbs of blue energy and small clouds from dispelled shadow clones cleared, we beheld Orochimaru's form stumbling away through the debris and stumps towards the tree line, missing an arm and with a crippled leg rapidly healing.

Sakura and I were breathing heavily, having gone all out for the short time our battle had taken place, but we weren't done yet. I shouted, "Now!" as we stepped into our ninjutsu formation.

"TEAM SEVEN ULTIMATE TECHNIQUE," Naruto shouted as he grasped my left hand and began to pour Kurama's chakra into me.

I focused my entire being on turning it all into Lightning-element chakra and funneling it into Sakura's back, "LIGHTNING STYLE:"

Sakura began the shape transformation, and an unbearably bright light began to form between her hands, "MASTER SPARK!"

Sakura thrust her hands forward, and we were all thrown from our feet by the backblast of the expanding beam of energy that roared across the world.

Gasping, blinded, deafened, and in incredible pain from chakra burns, we collapsed into an undignified pile of genin. We fought our way clear of each other, and ended up on our backs side by side, recovering.

What seemed like an eternity later, my sight began to return, and a ringing and pounding noise had replaced my deafness. I felt something shaking me and looked towards it, blinking to try and clear my vision more. As the blur I saw tended towards orange, I guessed it to be Naruto, probably worried about us.

A moment after that I felt hands on my chest and some energy flowing into me. Naruto grabbed my arm and helped me into a sitting position, then did the same with Sakura. We sat there for a few minutes while we caught our breath and recovered enough to make out each others' faces. Naruto was grinning like a maniac. I grinned back at him. Sakura mirrored us, and then we all fell back onto our backs laughing.

Eventually, after some basic medical techniques were applied, we could see and hear well enough to move, and we fumbled our way to our feet to look around and see the destruction our technique had caused.

A smoking crescent furrow had replaced the horizon and parts of the forest near it seemed to have been set ablaze. Small bursts of electricity were still arcing through the air, which tasted and smelled of cooked plant matter and lightning. In the middle of the trench, something stood out against the perfectly smooth surface.

Sakura gasped, "Wow..."
"I knew it would be strong, but..." I said.
"...It's incredible" Naruto finished after a moment, with a note of awe.

"Hehehe..."
"Heh. Hahaha!"
"Ahahaha."

Laughing, Naruto supported the two of us as we staggered and slipped together down into the newly formed path through the Forest of Death, and made our way to whatever was in the trench.

At least I know the paths the teams take well enough to know that nobody we care about was caught in the blast!

As we neared the object that was marring the perfect smoothness of the path of destruction, it made itself out to be a woman in a trench coat with her back to us, and what appeared to be a head in front of her on the ground.

"So, if we let you have this to stuff and mount, will we make chunin?" I barely managed to snark at her back.

Anko jumped to her feet and snapped around, then gaped at us just as the infusion of chakra that Naruto gave Sakura and I ran out and we succumbed to chakra exhaustion.

Failure

I followed Sasuke into the inn where Naruto was staying with Jiraiya, to see Naruto and Sasuke facing off against Itachi and Kisame.

"Get away from them! Akamaru! Fang Over Fang!"

Itachi didn't bother acknowledging me, while Kisame looked over at me as he grabbed his sword, "We don't have the time for any more two-bit ninja."

A moment later, I discovered the sensation of Samehada tearing me in half.

-----

"Well, Kurama, this seal will either pull you out of my body into this human clone so you don't have to be stuck in me anymore, or it'll kill me in a new and interesting way," I thought to the fox as I finished writing down the formula.

He growled back at me, "For your sake, it had better not be the second one."

"Aww, I didn't know you cared. It's not like you would remember it anyways. SCIENCE! can't advance without risk!"

"Damn brat!"

I laughed quietly as I put chakra into the seal. A short moment later, I was suddenly in an empty space, with what appeared to be mirrors of myself at set intervals in every direction.

"Oh."

Well, this doesn't look good.

"OH," came an echo of my voice, suddenly much louder.

This doesn't look any good at all.

"OOHH!" came another echo of my voice, distorted and loud enough to burst my eardrums.

FFFFUUUU--

"OO!#$HH%!$H!" came another echo, which shredded my body and left me blind and deaf.

"!!!!!"

I was suddenly in someone's bed again.

Huh, that was faster than I thought it would be and didn't hurt as much as I expected it to.

-----

Having massacred nearly the entirety of ROOT in a silent assassination spree as Tenten, I was now lurking outside the hallway that led to my final target, Danzo himself. The path was lined with a paranoid amount of traps, and two guards stood alert in front of his door.

Damn it, there's no way for me to get in silently... I'll just have to break through!

I rushed through the traps, earning a single cut across my thigh for my trouble. Danzo had probably been alerted by them, but I made quick work of the two relatively skilled guards.

Kicking down the door, I jumped to the side, narrowly being missed by Danzo's throw. I stumbled, my right leg suddenly numb.

Shit! That trap was poisoned! All or nothing then!

An instant later, I activated the fuinjutsu on my custom sword, the Silent Death, and made a single stroke without a target. A thousand cuts appeared around the room, destroying everything and ripping Danzo to shreds.

As I sheathed my sword, a kunai pierced me from behind and took me through the heart. A brief twist, and I saw Danzo holding it, his right eye bleeding under the bandages, with his right arm completely missing.

GODDAMMIT!

-----

I landed just outside the crater where I had been fighting Obito and fell to my hands and knees, the glare of the massive explosion of the combined rasengan assault causing me to look away.

Gasping, I struggled to stand, before I felt the wind twist behind me. "Looks like you're fresh out of chakra, boy," Obito's deep voice resonated, as I mustered the energy to snap around and throw a punch towards his face. He casually blocked it, then grabbed my throat and lifted me off the ground.

"End of the line," he continued, as the world began to swirl around me.

I grabbed towards my kunai holster, then fumbled a punch towards him as my hand came away empty, "No..."

For a brief moment, I tasted the sensation of my spine intersecting my vision of the sound green and I smelt the color of my last shuriken singing.

...

I woke up, then choked as I exhaled all of my breath by attempting to sit up. I tried to turn to my right, and my heart stopped. Attempting to relax to get control over myself, I broke my right arm with nothing more than muscle strength pulling against itself.

An agonizing minute later as I tore Lee's body apart in convulsions, I died again.

...

I leapt straight out of bed, gasping. After a brief moment of panic, I realized everything was working properly.

"F-f-fuck Kamui," I grated in Shino's voice.

A/N: I guess I'll have to turn my reserved post on the first page into an index soon. The Tenten fail is an alternate version of one of the shorts I'm writing but haven't yet completed. Upcoming in a few days to a week or so as I need to rest my inspiration: More First Tries, and maybe another Sakura-Sensei.

Maybe I've just spread my Naruto-fic reading out more, but I don't mind the Kakashi Teaching Poorly thing, and am willing to accept "ROB makes sure you're at least initially accepted as who you insert as" as a necessary part of the premise. In any case, I'm enjoying the fic.

First Tries - Sakura: Chapter 3

Following the directions on the paper I had been given, I made my way to training ground three with only a few false starts, because said directions assumed that someone would be familiar with the layout of Konoha.

Needless to say, I wasn't familiar with the layout of Konoha.

I hope I remember how to get 'home' to Sakura's house. Konohagakure is surprisingly tricky to get around...

Taking a deep breath of the fresh air of the forest and field, I stopped and looked around at the training ground. It was a glade with a small river splitting it in two and surrounded by trees, looking like it had come right out an art piece. The mountain with the Hokage monument appeared in the distance, with a few of the taller structures of Konoha showing above the treeline to the side. I paused for a moment to admire the view.

Did Konoha make the training ground look like this on purpose, or is it natural? If someone did it, I'd thank them for the view. Makes me kinda feel like laying down in the grass under the sun and having a nap.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts and started some simple warm up exercies while waiting for my teammates. Naruto was the first to show, running over to me with a "Hey Sakura-chan!"

"Hi, Naruto-kun," I said as I stopped warming up and stood at rest, then clasped my hands together in front of me and gave him my best puppy-dog eyes, "So, you promised to show and teach me how to make shadow clones..."

"Oh, ah, y-yeah, Sakura-chan." he fumbled, blushing at the attention. I couldn't help but giggle at his awkwardness.

He took a breath to calm himself, then put his hands into the familiar cross seal from the series, "Well, watch this, Sakura-chan! Multiple Shadow Clone Technique!"

There was a slight shimmer in the air from which I felt a slight sensation that I couldn't quite place but guessed to be chakra sense, then the field was suddenly populated by a half dozen more of the orange-clothed menace to the eyes.

I tried not to wince at the sudden increase in bright orange, then took a step to the nearest clone and grabbed it. After confirming its solidity and receiving a "Ah, Sakura-chan?" for my trouble, I grinned, "That's so cool! These are way better than the illusion we learned in the Academy," I paused, "So, how do you cast it?"

Naruto beamed with pride, "You use the clone seal," Naruto showed it to me again, "The scroll said to split your chakra like a normal clone, but use half of your chakra and focus on making it real. If you split it more you make more clones. If you don't split your chakra right it just hurts when your chakra snaps back. Go ahead and try it!"

Nodding, I took a brief step away from Naruto and his clones that had crowded around me, placed my hands into the clone seal, and focused on the sensation of chakra. I quickly split and pushed it out into the world, then hissed as it snapped back, feeling like doing a belly flop into a pool. A small puff of smoke appeared in the air to my side where I'd pushed my chakra.

"Ow, ow, ow, I don't think I used enough."

"Keep trying, Sakura-chan!" the Naruto clones cheered. I gave them a smile that was more of a grimace.

Taking a deep breath, I tried again, this time taking a little longer to make sure I was using more. When I felt like I was holding half of my chakra, which felt much like taking a full breath and releasing half of it, I released the technique, and a pink-haired girl shimmered into existence right next to me.

I staggered into a Naruto, who steadied me, then I gasped for air as I felt like I'd taken a sprint around the training field. I looked back to my clone, who looked back at me as her form seemed to waver, "Oh. This-"

She was cut off by turning into a cloud of smoke, and I was briefly assaulted by the strange sensation of deja-vu where I was seeing myself leaning on Naruto. I suddenly felt significantly better so I levered myself off the Naruto clone, who dispelled a moment later after he cheered a short "Good job, Sakura-chan!"

I think it dispelled because you have to hold concentration on your chakra or the form collapses?

Bracing myself for another attempt, I put my hands into the seal again, focused on my chakra, and released the technique. I weakly fell to my knees, sweating bullets, as another clone appeared. She looked back at us, brows furrowed in concentration as I sat recovering. I began to count to myself, and my clone was apparently doing the same, as she said in a ghostly voice, "Fifteen seconds, I'm dispelling," before she relaxed and vanished.

My breath caught as a portion of my strength suddenly returned. I again briefly experienced the memory of my clone, who had not felt my tiredness.

No more clones today... I think I'll pass out if I even try it again, and how did Naruto not notice the memory transfer? He makes too many clones or he doesn't pay attention?

Naruto cheered for me as I stood back up and brushed myself off, "It took me a lot longer than that to make my first one. You're really awesome!"

I shook my head at him and responded as I noticed Sasuke show up, "Ha... Thanks. Too bad I can't practice it much more than a few times. You have way, way more chakra than I do if you can throw around shadow clones like water," I took a deep breath and waved at Sasuke, "Hey, Sasuke-kun! Over here!"

He ambled across the field, gave us a look over, then said "You already started."

Naruto bristled and glared at Sasuke, "Hey, we weren't going to wait--"

I cut the boy off with a light thump across the back of his head, "Relax, Naruto," then answered Sasuke, "I asked him to show me how to cast shadow clones. They're solid clones, and I'm convinced they were invented by the cheatiest cheaty cheater who ever cheated."

Naruto looked at me, uncomprehending, while the black haired youngster raised an eyebrow at me and shifted, "Oh? Why is that?"

"I just figured out something that I'll show you both. Naruto, make a clone or two and have them follow me while the two of you stay here. Don't pick a fight with each other or something."

"Uh, okay, Sakura-chan," Naruto responded, before making a pair of clones. Sasuke quirked an eyebrow at me.

I grabbed both of the clones and dragged them into the nearby forest, far enough where we couldn't be seen or heard, then gave one of them a message for Naruto to relay to Sasuke before pulling a kunai and stabbing it. I counted to thirty, then told the other clone, "Here's your reward. Hugs!"

I gave the clone a hug, which he eagerly returned despite his red face, and he then dispelled at my order.

Back at the clearing, Naruto was looking mighty awkward and Sasuke gave me a glare, "You'll do what, now?"

I grinned back, unashamed, "I'm just saying that if you two don't get along, mysterious things might happen. We're a team now and should at least try to get along."

After a moment, Sasuke just shook his head, "So what was all that about? The person who makes the clones get the memories of them when they are dispelled?"

Naruto looked like he just had an epiphany at the explanation while I continued for Sasuke, "The creator should also get any skills that the clones learn, so if you want to work on learning a technique quicker or training control or precision instead of physical conditioning, these clones would be ridiculously good as long as you don't exhaust yourself. It's REALLY tiring to make them so you couldn't do special training with them for very long, though Naruto seems to have bottomless chakra reserves."

The blond boy blinked, then grinned like a maniac and started trying not to laugh as he danced around. Sasuke's eyes widened for a moment, before he gave me a hard look and demanded, "Teach it to me."

I frowned at him, then refused, "I'm just learning it right now myself. Naruto's the one who knows it properly, so if you want to learn it, ask him with a please instead of ordering us to teach you. It would help if you offer to teach us something in return..."

Sasuke grimaced, then took a deep breath and turned to Naruto, who clearly hadn't heard our exchange.

"Naruto," He began. Naruto stopped dancing and looked at the sour faced Uchiha before Sasuke continued, "...Please teach me the Shadow Clone Technique."

Naruto blinked at him and opened his mouth, but was cut off by me slashing my hand through the air at Naruto behind Sasuke's back and mouthing 'Yes' while nodding my head.

Naruto made a face, then accepted and began to teach Sasuke how to make a shadow clone. Sasuke offered to tutor us in taijutsu and throwing techniques in return. In the end, Sasuke managed to make a pair of clones that lasted for a short time, before getting too drained to continue practicing the technique.

After all of that, we had two hours of taijutsu sparring practice to work on catching up to Sasuke's frankly overwhelming skill. Naruto and I ended up practicing with some of Naruto's clones while Sasuke gruffly corrected our moves. We settled into a sort of working relationship without too much fighting or arguing.

We eventually left the training ground in the dying light of the afternoon sun, headed to Ichiraku Ramen for some shockingly good noodles, then parted ways to catch some sleep for our big day.

Everything actually ended up turning out okay, and those two weren't as bad as I thought they would be... I just hope change blindness will cover for my personality differences from Sakura while I get strong enough to live through the plot slash future.

-----

A/N: Everything I've looked at, in both canon and expanded materials like the databooks, shows that normal shadow clones are a B-Rank jutsu(Not forbidden - The multiple version that can create dozens to hundreds is apparently forbidden because it's ridiculously easy to kill yourself by making tons of them), and should be possible for basically anyone to learn. Additionally, the jutsu ranking system appears to be pretty inconsistent, looking like things are ranked based on some kind of opinion of combat usefulness.

Creating a single shadow clone for a short time should be reasonable for a genin, even one with baseline Sakura's low reserves and stamina. Anyways, for "First Tries", shadow clones are going to be used for their intended purpose, instead of as a combat tool like Naruto does throughout the series.

First Tries - Sakura: Chapter 4

In the morning, the three of us showed up bleary-eyed and tired before the crack of dawn as we were told in Kakashi's instructions. As I expected he would be, Kakashi was going to show up late.

Tired of waiting after a while, we ended up continuing the training we'd started the previous night to keep from falling asleep on our feet. Sasuke and I also made a single shadow clone each to continue practicing the technique and saw rapid progress in the life span of our clones, though a little under half a minute was not very long.

I had eaten a breakfast as I'd woken up, and prepared some extra for my teammates. I eventually convinced them to eat with a lengthy explanation of how Kakashi had worded his 'suggestion', as well as making the argument that ninja should always work on having enough food to eat, because nobody can travel or fight on an empty stomach. I also volunteered to take the blame if he took offense to us eating.

Around eleven in the morning, with the sun high in the sky, Kakashi finally showed up. I was glad for the chance to continue the 'team bonding' we'd started on graduation night but I was still kind of annoyed, so I decided to follow the normal Sakura and Naruto's lead on how to deal with it.

"Good morning, everyone," Kakashi said, in good cheer.

"YOU'RE LATE!" Naruto yelled.
"YOU'RE LATE!" I shouted, pointing my finger at Kakashi.

"Well, a black cat crossed my path, you see."

"LIAR!"

The annoyingly lazy jonin just gave us a smile that showed by the way his eye crinkled, then pulled out and placed a large alarm clock on the center training post, "Okay, this is set for noon," He raised his other hand, holding a pair of bells that jingled and continued, "Your mission is to retrieve these bells from me by noon. Those who don't get a bell won't get lunch and get tied to that," Kakashi now pointed at one of the training posts, "...and I'll eat my lunch right in front of you."

Ha, ha, sucker!

I ignored the looks that my teammates were giving me and tried not to smile, "So, Kakashi-sensei, why are there only two bells?"

"Oh, so you already ate? Don't blame me if you puke your guts out. There are only two so at the very least, one of you will have to go to the logs," Kakashi replied with an eye-smile, "That person will be disqualified for failing the mission... and be sent back to the Academy. It might be one person, or it could be all of you. You can use your weapons; You won't be able to take the bells from me unless you come with the intent to kill me."

I'd be more concerned if you weren't a filthy liar, Kakashi... Even someone who didn't know how this would already turn out could tell what you really want from what you're not saying and how you're saying it...

I grinned and pulled out a kunai, settling into a simple stance and holding it in front of me, "Yes, sensei! I won't hold back! Besides, I probably couldn't hurt you unless you let me."

Encouraged by my enthusiasm, Naruto and Sasuke prepared themselves as well.

Looking at our determined faces, Kakashi barked out a short laugh, "Heh. I think I'm starting to like you guys. Ready? Begin!"

We all jumped away with chakra-enhanced strength and I took the chance to throw my kunai. The jonin merely tilted to the side and let it pass by him as I reached the tree line.

A minute or so later, I was settling in between some bushes and trees with only a little visibility of Kakashi if I leaned around. I had taken the chance to go to his left side, where his guard would naturally be worse due to his headband covering his sharingan.

Not that I expected that advantage to help me enough to accomplish anything against a person who was capable of standing up one of the weaker bijuu.

Another short wait and Naruto showed up, challenging Kakashi to fight him straight up. They talked for a moment, though I couldn't make out the words from where I was situated, and Kakashi pulled out his smut. Naruto rushed Kakashi and threw some rapid punches without much of the whirling around that I remembered from the manga and anime, though it looked unrefined and wild. I smiled.

Progress.

After a brief exchange where Kakashi seemed to completely ignore Naruto while blocking him, Naruto threw a haymaker, closing his eyes. I quietly sighed when Kakashi simply stepped around Naruto and kneeled behind him, putting his hands into the tiger sign. Naruto looked back in horror at the jonin. A moment later the poor jinchuriki was launched into the sky and fell into the river.

I was waiting for this, or something like it if the things I'd changed had changed this moment, and I created a shadow clone for its intended purpose, scouting. She crawled forward to get a better watch on the fight as I made my way around to put myself further behind Kakashi because he was facing Naruto, who had crawled out of the river.

When I got the memory of a group of Narutos bursting free of the water, I broke cover and began running towards Kakashi's back as quietly as I could, grabbing another kunai. I grinned at a Naruto clone to my right that was rushing towards Kakashi's back like I was. He grinned back, then sped up and jumped onto our teacher's back, grappling him, "Ninja shouldn't let their opponents take them from behind! Right, Kakashi-sensei?"

A mere moment later, as Naruto clones were midair on their way to dogpile Kakashi, who seemed honestly surprised at getting flanked by Naruto, I reached the jonin's side and slashed with my kunai, managing to get my objective in my other hand.

I... I got the bells? Wot.

Completely shocked that I'd even touched them, I hesitated. As I was preparing myself to turn and jump away, I caught a short flash of light glinting off of the metal-plated back of Kakashi's hand coming towards my face.

AGGH!

I dimly felt my body get hurled into the air and crash to the ground through the pain, then saw nothing but darkness.

A/N: There's clearly a few months between graduation and Wave - Should I have an interlude from Kakashi's POV jumping from parts of the bell test to training between 'now' and Wave and a short interlude from Anko's POV running into SI!Sakura who is trying to learn water-walking early at the hot springs? It might be a change of pace, but I'm not sure if I should try writing something like that. If I don't, CH5 will be the end of the bell test, etc. and move straight on to Wave shortly thereafter.

Also, I planned on this chapter being longer, going through the full bell test, but ended up deciding to roll d20s for grins and giggles to decide how things would turn out in the action. Thus, you have this. Minor Cliffhanger no Jutsu.

P.S. Writing this stuff has really shown me that writing at least decent work is actually pretty hard on the brainmeats. It's been an experience, and really makes me appreciate my favorite authors more.

The fight sequence is a little short, but well handled - getting that kind of choreography right is often tricky, and describing action without dragging on with too many details or blazing past with too few can be a hard balance to strike. Good show.

Thanks for the kind words, Czlyydwr. I actually spent around four or five hours writing and rewriting the combat scene from first person point of view. Deciding what details are actually visible to the characters/viewers and are worth mentioning takes a surprisingly large amount of planning.

I had a few other versions of the bell test planned out, as well, though I ended up settling on this one. The other idea I thought was good enough to write was:

SI!Sakura misses the bells because Kakashi is aware of her, then she keeps Naruto from beating himself up. After that, she keeps Naruto from getting trapped by grabbing him, then uses clones to get the bell. Off-screen, Kakashi decides to let them have that bell for the smart move, and goes after Sasuke. Sakura and Naruto show up near the end of that fight while Sasuke is using the Great Fireball flamethrower, and picks a fight with Kakashi. Sakura gets Sasuke out of the ground while Naruto picks a fight with Kakashi as a distraction, then they work together against him. Ultimately, they get beat by the jonin, but pass.

I literally rolled a d20 to decide what would happen. If it was a 18 or below, I'd have gone with the one in this spoiler.

Woo! That was awesome.

Though I'm counting chapters till you get confronted about all this, you've been writing this very well.

Woo! That was awesome.

Though I'm counting chapters till you get confronted about all this, you've been writing this very well.

There's basically only a handful of people who are smart enough and familiar enough with Sakura for the SI to get caught out(Iruka, Shikamaru, Shino, Sasuke, Ino), and only one of them interacts enough with 'Sakura' before the chunin exam to pick up on it(Sasuke). Basically everyone else could be fobbed off with some form of "I decided to be more serious about being a ninja when I figured out a certain S-rank village secret" since the SI isn't really doing too much that Sakura wouldn't, had she been slightly different and more motivated.

Kakashi wouldn't figure it out on his own because the first time he meets them is on graduation day. He's read the academy reports, but Sakura's bad at the physical and practical skills, and the SI would be around the same level or slightly worse than advertised.

Sasuke's the type of person who keeps things to himself, so I'm on the fence about whether or not he confronts her about it. If he does, it would be shortly before Wave or during it.

Edit: Should I actually manage to write my way through Sakura's first life in First Tries, I have a string of epic fails planned as the SI ends up in the bodies of people on other teams.

Hrm yeah, you've got good points. And Naruto is too oblivious or basking in the fact that sakura isn't being mean to him... And if sasuke noticed, he'll probably keep quiet out of fear of fangirl sakura returning.

NARUTO: Sakura isn't hitting me anymore! Dattebayo!

SASUKE: I think she hit you too much, dobe. As for me, I'm just glad that she stopped obsessing over me.

NARUTO: Obsessing? What do you mean? ... Uh, teme.

SASUKE: ... She really did hit you too much. Dobe.

The Power Company

I was Sasuke Uchiha, age 30, and after much sweat, blood, and tears, I was about to achieve my goal.

UNLIMITED POWER.

I stood atop an open-topped and virtually indestructible silver tower surrounded by woods, a small town nearby along a paved road leading directly to my structure. From the building several enormous cables led off to other smaller, yet similar towers that were too far from my location to be seen. In the distance, a large city could be seen with a large number of metal and glass skyscrapers under construction. A crowd of dignitaries and high-class ninja had gathered below, near a small monument to the recent unification of the Elemental Nations as a continent in peace.

Basically every notable figure in the elemental nations were standing together in the crowd. Some of them were butting heads, but despite how animated they were acting, none of them was really serious about it.

It took so much Therapy no Jutsu to get them willing to forgive and forget...

The crowd quieted down in anticipation as I finished work with my machine, my modified body quickly and efficiently making the final changes needed. I nodded shortly to my assistants and walked to the podium we had set up on the edge of the tower overlooking the crowd.

It would be up to them to check and double check if the calibrations on the machine would be correct.

I roared, "Today, we stand together as a people united in a common purpose! After all of our effort, today is the day that we shall solve the needs of all people! I will not bore you all with a long speech today, as I'm not one for such things, but I hope that with our infinite reactors and matter conversion devices, we can all look forwards to our glorious future without the worry of your next meal or if you will have a roof over your head."

The crowd gave a great cheer, as just a decade before, these things were unthinkable. We were about to conquer world hunger and scarcity.

Sakura walked over to me, "Everything's ready and all of the settings are correct, Sasuke."

I gave her a quick peck on the cheek, then walked over to the big red button we had labeled "START". I pressed it without fanfare. Immediately, the middle of the top of the tower opened up, and a bight light shot into the sky. On the horizon, many other such pillars of light could be seen.

Several rings lifted off the sides of the tower and began to spin, and the pillar of light turned into a shrinking shimmering sphere. We all held our breath as it became as small as a single point, then the crowd screamed as a miniature rainbow-colored sun suddenly blossomed into existence. The light dimmed slowly, and everyone clapped as excess chakra began to wisp off of the tower in every direction.

Naruto, Darui, Kurotsuchi, Gaara, and Mei walked forward to the small monument and set down their hats before it. Some reinforced glass raised and they were all enclosed under the inscription, to be protected as a symbol of the peace we all hoped would never end.

The United Elemental Nations.
Joined in peace, never war, together forevermore.

I walked back to the podium, "Today, we go towards a new future without strife. Tomorrow, perhaps we shall even walk among the stars, with each man's eternal life or death as something they may decide."

Taking a short bow, I jumped off of the tower and landed easily, then enjoyed the party that we had prepared for the end of the power system's activation.

I look forward to how society will turn out with technology advancing this quickly. Maybe I'll even introduce True Resurrection techniques to the world later. Seeing how everyone responds to the ethical dilemma of soul magic BS would be... interesting.

A/N: I just wrote this up in like thirty minutes after re-reading my other UNLIMITED POWER short and deciding to try taking the idea in a completely different direction. Let me know what you think. :)

snip unlimited power take 2
seems reasonable as a second try. after the first one botched you took a couple of vacation loops and then brought Naruto and Sakura in on it to double check your math and make it a less evil overlord thing and more an usher in a utopian post scarcity civilization sort of thing. I could actually see immortality being a goal of SI so he could stop resetting and stay with his/her same friends forever.

A New Toy

After over three thousand years of research as a citizen of the Galactic Republic of Transcendent Humanity, I had finally finished work on a technique that would allow me to generate unlimited chakra... without using technology. I bid my dearest friends goodbye in a fairly large party full of my fellow immortals that knew of my time looping status, and killed myself with a painless technique.

I woke up to the ceiling of Ino's room and giggled like a kid with a new toy, which, frankly, I was.

Hehehehehe. Hahahaha. AHAHAHAHAHA!

I made a shadow clone to take my place while I sought out one of the more deserted clearings in the forest within the interior of Konoha's walls and began the ridiculously long ritual, which involved bootstrapping myself up to enough power with shadow clones using nature chakra respiration into my own chakra and other esoteric techniques.

The sun was rising on the next day as I finally finished the complicated chain of yin-yang techniques, opening the eight gates, and body modification, and I shouted in joy as I could feel the overwhelming power flood through me. My last clone dispelled itself with a grin and a, "You should see how you look, boss," and I received a memory showing Ino Yamanaka sitting in a clearing, body glowing and trails of chakra leaking upwards from my eyes before dissipating.

I grinned, then whooped with laughter as I turned up the power and the clearing suddenly became significantly wider when the unshaped chakra hurled much of the forest away from me. I could see everything with incredible clarity, and the wonderful smell of the grass and woods became sharper, more than it had ever been before. The sounds of the startled birds was music to my ears, and every color in the world was ridiculously vibrant.

"I. HAVE BECOME. A. GOD!" I shouted to the sky, joking, before I turned to check the time. It was shortly after when we were supposed to be meeting Asuma for our test, so I turned down the technique to a mere shimmer and glow, then vanished with a shunshin.

The jonin had clearly felt my display of power and my approach, and was standing at full combat readiness, his daggers glowing with chakra, when I made my appearance before them.

He managed to get out a "Wha-?" before I interrupted him. I bounced on the balls of my feet in front of my team, "SorryI'mlate. I'matimetravelerandIdevelopedatechniquethatmakesinfinitechakra *gasp* andohmygodthisfeelsamazing!"

"Ino?" came Choji's stunned response. Shikamaru muttered a "Troublesome."

Asuma wasn't a jonin for nothing, and managed to compose himself pretty quickly, "...Assuming you're really Ino and telling the truth, why would you come back in time?"

Shikamaru followed that up with, "...and slow down so we can understand you."

I made an effort to calm down off the power high I was running on, "Oh, uh, well... I kinda got bored?"

"What."

"Yeah, I was bored with how peaceful it was. We ended up running out of S-rank ninja to fight and high-power tournaments were outlawed."

"...I see," came Asuma's skeptical response as he lowered his weapons.

I smiled at him, "So, can we do the test now? Can we can we can we?"

"How strong are you?" Shikamaru asked, calculating, before Asuma could respond.

Turning my million-watt-smile on him in turn, I told him, "My power level is over nine thousand!"

I only received blank faces in response. I pouted at them, then turned my best puppy-dog-eyes on our would-be teacher, "Soooo, about the test? I wanna play with my new toy, I mean, technique."

Asuma pulled out a cigaratte and lit it, sighing. He took a deep drag off of it, and blew it into the wind, "...You know what, fine. Today's test was supposed to be an all-out battle of you three versus me. I would tell you not to hold back, but I'm sure that Ino would probably destroy the training ground. You get to sit this out unless you can control yourself," he finally said, directing the last part directly at me.

"I can fix anything I break, I promise!"

"Ugh, how troublesome."

"You know, in the future, we replaced you with a machine that says 'troublesome' at the right times so you could just watch the clouds," I shot back.

Shikamaru's face twitched, and Choji was fighting not to laugh at his fellow genin.

Our jonin-sensei sighed again and crushed his cigarette, which had burned down, "...Haaa... Ready? Begin!"

Shikamaru and Choji jumped away as I flared my chakra out and formed it into a sheer sphere around me. Asuma rushed forwards and struck the barrier with his wind-enhanced knives, and nothing happened.

I stood there for a second, then pulled on my blond ponytail, "I don't think I thought this through... Do you have any techniques with the power to break through my shield?"

The jonin enhanced his daggers until the wind-natured chakra blades reached their maximum strength, then struck at my shield again. The chakra scattered off of it.

"...No."

"...I think I'll just sit this one out."

"Mmm. After we're done, you're coming with me to talk with the Hokage."

"Yeah."

The mood ruined, I walked over to the training posts and began conjuring food and drinks with the Yin-Yang Style: Creation of All Things Technique for when Shikamaru and Choji inevitably passed the test.

A/N: Crack-writing powers, activate! If you're in a time loop with reality-altering powers, eventually you'd get abilities that nobody can stand against, regardless of skill or power.

Tune in next time, for another episode of Dragonba-- hahahahahahaha no.

Don't be too sure...

:)

Clearly, it calls for a Tenga Toppen Gurren Lagaan style battle where the SI loses. Also, yeah, abilities with chakra aren't passively active, so it'd be limited to how long you can hold your concentration or getting ganked when you don't have your defenses up. :D

Or, you know, ridiculous stuff like Kamui and other conceptual attacks.

Edit: Off the top of my head, any of the Sharingan abilities would go through a simple barrier, as well as any of the Rinnegan abilities(Absolute Push is "Apply Directional Force to all objects within this area", etc.). Additionally, any Yang, Yin, or Yin-Yang Release abilities would also be virtually impossible to guard against. Which kinda gives me an idea of something to write about getting wrecked by Nagato and/or any of the Uchiha despite being a physical god.

Actually, more like a number of fails and other things in between. The evil overlord one is SI getting a bit stir crazy, and this one is after a number of loops refining the infinite-chakra-reactor in peaceful loops. Unless I(and by extension the SI) have other people to ride herd on me, I tend to either get too focused on small details or the big picture, so I could see my SI failing to make it work for a loong time before caving and getting others to assist.

Hope we see more of the main story rather than all the omakes as there should never be more omakes than real story. :p

Heh, I'll get on working on that soonish.(Edit: Not steam time, but probably not for a couple days)

Just had a shift change at work, so probably going to be slow while I adjust my sleep cycle. Hard to make the effort to write stuff when moving your sleep cycle backwards and spending all of your time yawning and trying to stay awake. It's actually immensely difficult to get into the mood to write fiction when you're trying not to pass out from a half-day cycle change in your sleep schedule.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Edit: Expect updating to resume in about a week(?). Just had the shift change last night. Haven't slept in ~40 hours, going to bed now to get my new sleep cycle started.

Expect main story content soon™.

Edit: That is to say, Ashali's just filling out one paragraph or so, and you'll get 1 chapter and shortly thereafter, an interlude. Everything's beta'd. Ashali might be lazy and not post it, but my shift ends in an hour, so I'll go pester him to post once I get home.

Edit2: He dreams the dreams of the dead, forgive me, for I have failed you. However not all is lost! He shall wake up, probably.

First Tries - Sakura: Chapter 5

I groaned as I came back to consciousness, disoriented and feeling like I was already moving. I cracked my eyes open against the nausea and pain, and saw that I was being carried on the back of a boy wearing an orange tracksuit. Everything I saw was blurry, and I was blinking out blood that was flowing down into my left eye from what I assumed was a cut across my forehead, evidenced by the sharp pain I could feel up there.

Huh bwuh wha...? Oh. Yeah, Naruto. Ow.

I reflexively clenched my hands and was rewarded by the feeling of squeezing metal in my left. Naruto reached a clearing and I shut my eyes against the swords of light piercing my skull. I mumbled to him, "Pu' me down, I thin 'm gonna..." and clenched my jaw.

Naruto wisely stopped in the middle of the clearing and dropped to a knee to let me off, "Ah! Are you okay, Sakura-chan?"

I only gave him a "Mmhmm" before I crawled off him to fight to control my breathing and to keep myself from emptying my breakfast onto the grass. After a few breathless moments where I was unsure whether or not I'd keep it down, I finally got myself under control. I rolled onto my back, gasping and relieved, as I heard someone else enter the clearing.

I looked over to see that it was Sasuke, "He's right behind us," he said, before looking at me, "The bells?"

I raised my balled hand in the air as I wiped away some of the blood from my eyes with my free hand, "ere. Help me up slow. I don' wan'ta barf."

Naruto and Sasuke grabbed my arms and slowly hauled me to a sitting position, then helped me to my feet. I staggered against them for a moment before getting my feet under me. I shook my head to clear it as I finally felt like I was recovering and ordered, "Naruto, clones around us. Sasuke, smoke bomb please."

They looked at me for a moment, then did as I asked when they quickly figured out why I'd asked them to do it. A short handsign and a shimmer, and we had a perimeter of clones that filed out to watch us. Sasuke grabbed several smoke pellets from a pouch and threw them to the ground around us.

Cloaked by the smoke, I grabbed Sasuke and Naruto's hands and gave each of them a bell, "Hide this on you, then protect me like I still have them until the alarm rings. Naruto watches the clearing while Sasuke covers above. Be careful of underground, too." I murmured to them before I pulled out a kunai.

"Good plan, Sakura!" Naruto whispered as he put his bell in a pouch and grabbed a kunai. Sasuke gave me a nod as he put his away and grabbed his own kunai, "About ten minutes left."

When the smoke cleared a moment later I was positioned between my teammates, who had each created a clone to complete a cross formation. We waited fully ready for a few minutes as the time crept ever closer to noon without our teacher showing up.

Just after all of the clones expired of old age and I was starting to feel anxious, I felt the ground move under me.

Lesson three? I refuse to be buried!

I quickly jumped back with an enhanced jump just as our teacher's arm came out of the ground and he barely missed catching my foot. I stumbled slightly as I landed and our formation followed closely. Kakashi came completely out of the ground just as we settled into a reverse triangle formation with Sasuke and Naruto between myself and the silver-haired menace. Kakashi studied us for a moment with a, "Hmmm..." before he leaned forward and ran at us, quickly but not as fast as he could move if he really wanted to.

Thank goodness he's still doing the holding back to test us thing.

I grabbed a shuriken and threw it at him as he closed with us. My throw didn't have much power and was a little off target, but it was close enough that Kakashi dodged by leaning to the side. Sasuke quickly followed up by engaging him in a short series of taijutsu strikes that slowed him down significantly before he broke past. Naruto made a group of clones who bogged Kakashi down while Sasuke made his way back around to me, and I started moving back and around the clearing, trying to keep at least one of my teammates between myself and our teacher at all times.

We began to play keep-away for the next several minutes. Naruto swamped Kakashi with endless squads of clones that began to show slightly better taijutsu with each group he made, Sasuke was attacking him whenever he broke free of the melee with efficient taijutsu and attacks with his kunai, and I only had to engage Kakashi in melee for a brief moment which earned me a bruised rib for my trouble. I was mostly taking potshots with my rapidly dwindling supply of shuriken and kunai as the fight wore on and the endless engagement of strike-retreat-throw-strike blurred together.

Eventually, we heard the alarm go off in the distance, and Kakashi disengaged. His uniform had a few light cuts in the armored sections, but he was completely unharmed.

Naruto, despite his obvious tiredness and scruffy appearance, literally jumped for joy after a moment, "YES! Victory! Believe it!"

I couldn't see Sasuke's face, but the way he was standing was radiating pride.

Unlike my teammates I happened to be completely exhausted, so I sat down and leaned back on my arms to rest, breathing heavily.

Kakashi walked over to us, "Well then, I guess Sakura passes and you two--!"

"NOPE!" I managed to shout over him, before taking a deep breath, "I don't have the bells," I continued in a much more normal tone, grinning up at him. Naruto grinned and held out his bell, while Sasuke smirked and flashed his own into sight under the sun.

"Oh?" he questioned, his tone light with approval, "Then you figured out the answer to the test?"

"Eh? What?" Naruto asked, not understanding. Sasuke looked at us questioningly, but kept quiet.

I answered Kakashi, "Well, my teammates might need it spelled out for them, but circumstances conspired to give me the opportunity to use the answer against you: Teamwork. The bells weren't the point of the test at all. The question was whether or not we could put aside our self interest to work together."

Naruto looked between us, wide eyed, while Sasuke was shocked for a moment before adopting a closed-off expression that probably meant he was thinking about everything that had happened during the test.

Our teacher gave us a genuine smile, "Exactly. Being a ninja is dangerous business. Individual play that disrupts the team can put your comrades in danger, and even get you killed. For example, when Naruto was attacking me alone, he couldn't even land a blow on me, let alone protect himself. If that had been a real fight, he could have died. When the three of you were working together at the end, I had to fight defensively because the three of you could cover each other's openings," He gestured at the cuts on his armor, "Your plan was good; I was only trying to get past you to recover my bells from Sakura, but she didn't have them so I was wasting my effort."

"It was all Sakura's plan! She's awesome!" Naruto blurted.

I gave them a sheepish look, "Ehehehe. Thanks."

Our teacher gave us a huge smile that we could see through his mask, "You guys are the first team to see through the test. Everyone else would just do whatever I told them, because they were all morons... A ninja must see underneath the underneath. Those who break the rules and codes of the ninja world are called trash, but you know what? Those who don't take care of their comrades and work together with them... are lower than trash," He gave us a thumbs up, "That ends our test, you all pass!"

"YEAH! I did it! Ninja! Ninja! Ninja!" Naruto shouted. Sasuke had a genuine smile on his face, which actually looked really good on him. I also cheered with a "Yes!" as I stood back up.

"OK! Team Seven begins its duties tomorrow. Lets get you all cleaned up and then you're dismissed for today."

"Yes!" we all responded as we followed him.
