This probably will be of little benefit in the end, but there is worth in the trying.
I am not actually super-interested in turning Odd/ny into the exact same caricature of hyper-toxic masculinity as literally every other Saga protagonist, emulating their exact vices and mistakes leading up to the same violent and pitiful end.
If I wanted that, I could just read "literally any actual historical saga," most of them are probably online somewhere
Well, the problem is that for Odd/ny specifically, toxic hypermasculinity is not a virtue, but may be a necessity for social survival, given their little predicament...
I can believe that, but it may be because you're thinking in terms of the "best" option here.
Ultimately, if we choose the "sensible" options, we're probably going to have a pretty mediocre saga. Norse sagas are not the kind of stories where you befriend everyone, choose the "optimal path", then retire to your estate at thirty five to rationally improve your farming techniques and invent gunpowder. This makes them very unsuited to SVers' usual tendencies.
Norse sagas are about blood feuds which cut through families like shrapnel, the inevitability of death and the cold, and the way that true wo/men show themselves not by overcoming fate, but in how they refuse to be cowed by it.
The spirit of most sagas is of young men being stupid testosterone factories until they and many people around them die of axe poisoning. Odd/ny is not stupid (so far), so we decided not to do that.
