Nox [AU ; Alt-Power]

Having read from the start in the past day or two, I have to ask: what happened to this story?

The first chapter was fantastic. Good pacing, engaging, good character interaction, well written scenes. And then suddenly from chapter two on it feels like we switched to a totally different author, one for whom English is a second language.

It's not *bad*, just very off. Lots of little mistakes. Regular awkwardly phrased sentences, not quite right idioms, and characters constantly using stiff overly formal language in casual settings yet using casual slang when it's supposed to be serious and solemn. It's very jarring where, in a scene that's supposed to be deep and emotional, both people sound like they're delivering a dry scientific dissertation.

I do really like this concept and enjoy the story, but I really think it needs a beta reader to help smooth out the wrinkles.

Yeah - I'm aware. I have been told on numerous that my characters are too formal and that I don't use contractions in places where I should. I'm working on it and I'd like to think I'm actually getting better.

And believe me, no one is more aware of the fact than I that this and my other stories would profit from beta-readers ... the thing getting one is easier said than done -

In the very first post of every one of my stories, I asked for exactly that -

Furthermore, since I'm no native speaker of the English language I would appreciate it if somebody would be willing to beta-read/edit my stuff to give it at least the semblance of readability.

with let's say varying success - for Nox, I gained someone willing to beta the story in between chapters 06 and 07 - bms111 over at SB. Hopefully, I can secure his services going forward. Betaing is an immense investment of time - everybody who has done so in the past will undoubtedly attest to that - and he on top of that has to deal with me on a regular basis :), therefore this all but guaranteed.

Getting someone to invest time to look over already published chapters on the other hand is an entirely different beast.
This, unfortunately, means until someone comes forward willing to do this (and I'm really not picky - I'm glad for every little bit of help I can get) you will have to endure ... or hope I get better at it somewhere down the line ...

Chapter 08 - Queen Administrator

Sustained by the euphoria, I felt at having found a way to help Dad. I jogged to the hospital. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to keep my pace and had to make more than one pause, during which I slowed down to a walk. Despite this being my first attempt at getting in shape, not counting those instances I ran for my life, I already got the impression that it was beginning to make a difference.

And if I happened to get into any more life and death situations, every little advantage could mean the difference between walking away or being sent to the morgue.

I reached the entrance of the hospital out of breath and slightly sweaty. I tried my hand at a final sprint by running up the stairs to Dad's room.
As a result, no small amount of disapproving glances were sent my way. To my great relief, no staff member I came across had the time, nor the inclination to reprimand me.

I didn't slow down until I was standing next to Dad, still lying in his bed. With the receding adrenalin, I started noticing the state of my body, my leg muscles being sore and hurting, and my body being close to exhaustion.

A little rest right now wouldn't be the worst idea. But first, I had something to do that allowed no delay.

He was unconscious and in a worse state than when I last saw him. Considering that it was only a few hours ago made it quite clear what a precarious situation he was in. They added some more equipment to the machines, which were already present this morning while I was gone; All monitoring his health in one way or the other.

I repeated the process of searching the room for any surveillance system. But I had to admit to myself that if there were any such devices present, they more than likely would be installed into the machines surrounding Dad's bed. Meaning there was nothing I could do about them, let alone being able to find them.

Nonetheless, doing it, at least, gave me peace of mind - that I did all within my capabilities. When I finished looking around, I used a chair to block the inward opening door. Trying to prevent a repeat of what happened last time I was here. Following this, I curtained off Dad's bed.

I couldn't help but notice how utterly vulnerable he looked. A state I would never have thought I would see him in.

Returning to a position standing next to him, I summoned Mom. She stepped out of my shadow. For a moment, she placed her hand reassuringly on my shoulder and then moved to his headrest out of his peripheral vision in the event he should awaken. It would allow me to unsummon her before he could get a chance to see her.

At least if I still retained the ability to do so, there was a high chance of his power influencing me to a similar degree to what happened to him and Mom, which could even result in me ruining this attempt at saving his life.

I took a deep breath. Fully aware that it wouldn't be nearly as easy as with Alabaster.

I shook myself violently in the hopes to get rid of my doubts. Then I focused on the task at hand and tried to invoke the determination necessary to succeed. Because I was expecting quite a fight to be lying ahead of me to get his power under control and the Abyss to do only what I demanded of it.

A short glance to my right at Mom, and with a nod from me, she touched Dad on his forehead. She regained her bearings faster than in the previous instance and initiated the next phase of our venture by touching my shoulder.

Without delay, I felt the effects of being gifted this power. It was just indescribable the new Horizon opened in my mind. The closest comparison I could make was being blind and deaf from birth and then suddenly being cured of it, opening your eyes for the very first time, and looking at the most beautiful thing imaginable while listening to divine music.

It was just, wow, this is how it must feel to be granted godhood. It was simply addicting. I felt like being embraced by warmth, pure love, and caring. Nothing I had ever experienced came even close compared to the depth of it. To be so much more than before. It was a hundred a thousand times grander than being fused with any one of my Shades.

It took all my willpower to come back to my senses, to not lose myself in this kaleidoscope of impressions. It was incredibly hard to say no to those feelings, to step back from something that was everything I could have ever wished for.

If not for a small part of myself anchored to my sense of responsibility, clinging to the memories of Dad, combined with the knowledge of what would be the consequences of my failure, I would have succumbed to it.

I opened myself to the Darkness within me, and with no effort at all, I found the shard that elicited such wonderful feelings. The Darkness reached for it, and faster than I could even process it, the Shard was loose, severed from all the connections, and dragged deep down into the Abyss.

There was no resistance, whatsoever. On the contrary, it was as if the Shard wanted to be consumed. I got the impression it couldn't cast away Dad fast enough, not thinking him worthy. Instead, it was more than overeager at the prospect of becoming one with me. I probably needn't do anything for it to stay with me.

I was simply puzzled at what just happened. Because this shard clearly showed intent. Are those powers sentient beings? If they are, what did this mean? Why are they granting humans powers? To what end?
I couldn't help but chuckle, and here I was hoping to finally get some answers, but what I got were just more and more questions. If this continued, I probably should start looking into ways to become immortal, just to have enough time to answer them all.

I ended my introspection, and the first thing I noticed was that I saw my Dad from two separate perspectives. I was confused and moved my head to make out the new point of origin of this new viewpoint, which was looking down at Dad from an angle slightly above his headrest.
What I saw was Mom in her pantsuit, standing there frozen, her eyes fixed on Dad.

"Mom? Is everything alright?" I asked, concerned. She didn't respond. She didn't even move. My heart rate accelerated, and panic seeped into my mind. It couldn't be. Did I do something to let her personality regress and turn her into one of those puppets, all my other Shades were, without me knowing?

No, this couldn't be happening. I refused to accept this. We were just reunited. I wouldn't be able to survive losing her again; I just wouldn't.
In my desperation, I reached for her only to feel the touch twice. Once through my fingertips and at the same time through her upper arms. The place where my fingers made contact with her as if those arms were mine. Surprised by this, I halted my actions and didn't attempt to follow through with my original intent to shake her awake.

"Okay, calm down Taylor. Think!" – I told myself. "The moment you stop thinking, you have already lost."

I took a deep breath and followed my own advice. Thinking straight, it wasn't hard to discern that the only thing different prior to this change was absorbing Dad's shard. Hence I suspected it to be the very reason for it. Furthermore, I concluded, that this must be one of those evolved abilities of the Abyss, because I wasn't actively using the Shard, at least not to my knowledge. Hell, I didn't even know if it was possible to use a non-bound Shard.

In an attempt to get a better understanding of what this new ability entailed, I summoned Iron Rain. She stepped out of my Shadow, and I immediately gained full access to her sensory perception the instant she fully materialized. Unfortunately, this didn't free up Mom from the effect she was under. There was no change. She was still held in the grasp of this power. But what else could I do? - I asked myself.

If I could feel what they felt, could I direct their actions?

It took me a few attempts, but as I found out. I really was able to move their bodies. I even had complete access to their powers.

I summoned another Shade, one I hadn't before. It was one of the male Shades I collected during my cemetery visit. He, too, immediately fell under my control. There was no prompting of my power necessary, to learn what his powers were. Just by summoning him, I knew. This allowed me to effectively side-stepped the whole `fuse with them method´ I had to use before in order to find it out.

But I still wasn't able to remove my control over Mom or the other Shades. Given that it extended over more than two of my Shades, I considered it a safe bet to assume that all of them would be awaiting the same fate if called upon.

So the question was, how do I get Mom back?

This new power allowed me to puppeteer my Shades as an extension of my body, even going so far as granting me an inherited understanding of their powers. While being a great ability, it was unwanted.

I tried to withdraw myself, my presence controlling them from my Shades. An undertaking that, proved to be difficult. Because I didn't know how I controlled them in the first place. As far as I could tell, nothing changed in regards to my connection to my Shades.

Something that simply couldn't be true. But for some reason escaped my notice. I really should have invested the time and gotten more familiar with my power, then I wouldn't struggle with this now. Well, Hindsight is twenty-twenty. I just hoped I would do better in the future. It was really cringe-worthy how many mistakes I already accumulated in the short time since I decided to use my powers.

I stopped with my futile attempts and took a step back from the problem. If my presence in the Shades didn't change, something else must have changed. I recalled the way it felt being one with the new Shard and tried to find anything resembling it. It took me a while; I was just about to give up my search as another failed attempt when I found it.

There was something new, piggybacking on my own connection. It resembled thin spider threads, barely noticeable, wound around my own. It strangely fit my mental image of this power, allowing me to puppeteer my Shades, because the strings on puppets weren't visible either.

With some prompting, I was able to get one of them to withdraw back into the Abyss, where they came from. I immediately noticed the change by losing access to the sense of sight of Mom. I restored this connection and withdrew another one. This time I lost my grip on her hearing. The next one I tried resulted in me losing the ability to control her body. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to return her to her previous self, her own devices.

The only conclusion I could draw capable of explaining this suggested that there had to be a thread taking control of her mind.

After some lengthy trial and error, I was able to identify the ones controlling her powers and mind and removed them. Additionally to the one controlling her body. The first thing out of her mind were the words:
"That was... different."

"I would suspect so. Are you alright Mom?" I asked.

"Yeah," she said, relieved. "I was never on the receiving end of some master effect. I heard of how master effects can take control of somebody previously to encountering this one. But there never was any mention of one even coming close to the absolute grip you had on my every action; even my thoughts weren't my own."

"I can see how alarming that must be; to be nothing more than a passenger in your own body. I can only imagine how I would have reacted if I would have found myself in the same situation." I freely admitted. Losing one Free-Will was a horror scenario for a reason.

"That's just it," she retorted. "I'm not disturbed. I'm not scared out of my mind, given the prospect of being at the complete mercy of somebody else, not being in control of my body, my thoughts, and my power. Honestly, it should scare me shitless; that such a thing is possible even if you are the one having this power over me. But there is nothing, no feelings of disgust, fear, or fright. I... I just accept it."

"That is ... Wow." I was at a loss for words. "Do you think that this disregard is somehow connected to the suppression of the personalities we already established for Shades not loyal to me?"

"Yes, it has to be." She mulled it over. "Another safety measure, I mean it would be strange if some of your abilities would lose you the loyalty of your Shades. Nonetheless, it is strange, hearing your mind telling you, you essentially should be in the middle of a panic attack while being totally calm. But I guess it is just one more thing I'm gonna have to adapt to, given a little more time."

Hearing her say this was disturbing on a fundamental level. In what my power was capable of doing to those I reanimated as one of my Shades. But similar to Mom, I had to accept it. Simply because I didn't think I was able to do anything about it. And I was well past the point of no return. After some thought, I kept the threads granting me access to her senses in place. It wouldn't hurt. On the contrary, I could come up with over a dozen scenarios in which having access to her senses might be useful, one way or the other.

In the same vein, I decided to give the same treatment to all my other Shades. For one, they were already following my orders. In addition, it would allow me to take note of if something in their behavior restriction could change after they were made into Shades. After I had identified what each thread did in the case of Mom, it was fairly easy to match the individual threads to their function. As a result, it took no time at all to do it for all of them. I didn't even need to summon them first.

I unsummoned Iron Rain and the man, who I realized possessed a very useful power. He was a Shaker that could phase any non-living objects solid and liquid out of our reality leaving only a vague ghostly image of the objects behind that no longer could interact in any way with objects or persons not being phased.

If I would have known I had a Shade possessing such a power, which allowed one to walk through walls, I could have saved myself a lot of trouble back in the E88 warehouse. And here I thought myself lucky for finding the Shade I fused with Mom when I did because it allowed me to survive the events back there when I could have found him instead.
Well, no use in crying over spilled milk. It could have gone better. But given the fact that I only had time to learn about a few of my Shades before the Empire arrived instead of finding more useful Shades, it could have been just as well been the opposite, shades less useful in the situation I found myself in. I shuddered at the thought of what might have happened.

"Mom, would you be so nice," I said, pointing at dad.

Following my prompt, she touched him again. Only this time, instead of taking something from him, she granted him regeneration. She had to refresh the regeneration a few times over a period of roughly ten minutes until Dad finally stirred. While being antsy waiting for specifically that to happen, I not only paced up and down the whole time but also removed the chair blocking the door. There no longer was a need for it. Since the sensitive part of the operation, during which I couldn't afford to be interrupted, was already over.

We weren't sure if he was injured that badly for it to take more than one dose of superpowered regeneration or if it just took so long to wash out the drugs in his system.

In the end, I decided it didn't matter and was just happy. I unsummoned Mom with an unspoken thank you on my lips.

Dad's awakening was a slow process, he regained a lot of color from his previous pale face and fallen cheeks, no longer looking like death warmed up.

On the contrary, aside from a drowsy complexion, he made a healthy impression on me, for the first time in months. It made me remember a time when our family still counted three members.

I waited patiently for him to open his eyes and take in his surroundings, despite desperately wanting nothing more than to hug the stuffing out of him.

"Taylor is that you?" he asked with a hoarse voice while squinting his eyes. Right, he wasn't wearing his glasses.

Hearing those words, took all the load off my mind. Because in the darkest corner of my mind, I waited for the other shoe to drop in some fashion. The relief for it to be wrong was just too much.

I tackled my Dad, lying in his bed, burying my tearing eyes in his torso intent on never letting him go. He groaned at my impromptu attack and said.

"Careful there," he croaked, "my ribs aren't daughter-hugging proof.'' The absence of a response from me caused Dad to reciprocate my hug.

He softly asked, his words barely qualifying as whispered.
"How close did I come to dying?"

Instead of answering, I strengthened my grip on his torso. I wasn't able to discern if his wince was a reaction to my action or if he understood my unspoken message.

Our moment together was interrupted when I heard the curtains around dad's bed being parted, and a stern woman voiced her displeasure.

"Miss Hebert didn't the incident this morning make it clear to you why the curtains are to re ..."
She didn't come any further with her tirade, the next things I heard were fast retreating steps and a through walls muffled. "Get me Doctor Green ..."

I completely failed to notice her coming into the room, let alone getting this close. Either those nurses must have been trained in stealth, that would shame most thieves, or I was just too distracted by bawling out my eyes, again. Since when did I become such a crybaby? I cried more in the last few days than in the last few years combined. To be fair, those were special circumstances with Mom coming back to life and now this whole affair with Dad.

Nonetheless, it left some things to be desired; for god's sake, I was no longer a five-year-old girl.

I released Dad from my embrace and moved out of the way. In the next moment, I heard the footsteps of the nurse with another person in tow. I discreetly made my way over to some chair and used my sleeves to wipe away my tears. Doctor Green and the Nurse had enough decency to not comment on it, and neither did they pay me any attention aside from noting my presence. I handed dad his glasses, which were lying on his bed rest. He put them on without delay.

"I'm pleased to finally make your acquaintance Mr. Hebert." was the first thing Dr. Green said to dad with a smile on his lips while offering his hand for him to shake it. "Ah, a good strong handshake, that's a good sign. How are we feeling today?"

"Water," he croaked out.

"Of course," he said, embarrassed. "Cynthia, would you please get a glass of water for Mr. Hebert."

"Already on it," Cynthia responded, then halfway through the room. Nearing a tablet in the corner of the room filled with some reversed glasses and a bottle of water next to them. She filled a glass and returned to dad's bedside, carefully handing the glass to him. "Slowly and only small, deliberate sips," she ordered, keeping a close eye on dad, to ensure that her words wouldn't be ignored. Hands raised, ready to intervene at a moment's notice.

She waited for dad to nearly empty the glass before she took it from him.

With that taken care of, Dr. Green repeated his earlier question. "How are we feeling today, Mr. Hebert?

"Good, perhaps a little restless as if I laid in bed for too long."

"That is quite a natural reaction given your condition." Dr. Green reassured. "Aside from that, do you have any complaints of headaches, dizziness problems with your sight? Are your thoughts perhaps sluggish or not coherent?"

"No, nothing of the like," Dad assured. "I don't have any of those symptoms you mentioned, and I don't feel anything else wrong with me. On the contrary, I feel great, better than I did in a long time."

"That's great to hear," Dr. Green said. "Given the condition you arrived at, I'd like to act on the side of caution and examine you thoroughly. For that, I'd need you to stay with us just a few days longer, at least until we had the chance to make an MRI of your head."

"I don't think that to be necessary." Dad declined politely.

"Oh, but I think it is," Dr. Green insisted. "Mr. Hebert, when you arrived here you had a head injury, those are seldom to scoff at, but you were an especially bad case. You were bleeding out of your nose, and you weren't responsive. Honestly, we still don't know what even was the cause for it."

"It was that serious, hmm?" Dad inquired thoughtfully.

"Yes, it was." Dr. Green assured. "I can understand your reluctance to stay a single day longer than necessary in a hospital. It is, after all, a place the healthy avoid like the plague because here we are constantly reminded of our mortality. And our beds cost a pretty penny; still, your health should be more important than a few dollars. As a doctor, I can't allow you to leave with a good conscience. Therefore I suggest that you should get yourself examined thoroughly." After a short pause, with a far softer voice, he added, "Even if it is only to allay the fears of your daughter."

"You drive a hard bargain," dad said lamenting. "Are you sure you are a doctor and not a used-car salesman?" At that insinuation, Dr. Green laughed, and I couldn't keep myself from smirking.

"Not that I'm aware of, but if you say I have untapped talent, I take your word for it. Perhaps I should consider it as an alternate career path if working as a medical professional doesn't pan out." Dr. Green said jokingly. Dad reciprocated the laugh at his response and glanced at me.

"Perhaps I should follow your advice on this since you are the professional." He humored him.

"That would be my recommendation, and you wouldn't want to let all the strings I had to pull and favors I had to cash in go to waste for securing you an appointment in the already far too tight MRI schedule."
I could see Dad still wasn't fully sold on it, but I wasn't the only one to whom this looked like this because Dr. Green added. "How about this, if the results come back negative tomorrow, I will personally escort you from the premises."

This got Dad's approval. "You've got yourself a deal," he said with a smirk.

"Good, I will return in a few minutes for some tests. Before I forget it. Do you need a phone to take care of some things?" Dr. Green asked conspiratorially. In response, I received a questioning look from dad.

"Yeah, that might be a good idea." I conceded.

Dr. Green walked over to a Nightstand and took the wireless phone from its receiver and gave in a pin before he handed it over to Dad. "When you are done, place it back."

"Thank you." was Dad's short response, Dr. Green left shortly after together with the Nurse.

"So, Taylor, who do I have to call?" He said knowingly. I winced at that.

"Your work and my school," I confessed.

Raking his hand through his thinning-out hair, he said, "As I feared. Taylor, I know you consider yourself mature, and you aren't wrong in that assumption, to a degree. But you should have sought the help of an adult."

Well, I did, but I wouldn't tell him that, for now at least.
"I know you and Emma have your problems at the moment, but there are others, friends of the family who wouldn't have minded helping you."

He reached for my hand and squeezed it. "Promise me, next time, god forbid there ever is a repeat of that, something happens to me you seek help."

"I promise." I had no problem with giving my word on this, I intended to keep it just not in the way Dad assumed I would. With Mom a thought away, I never would be without adult supervision ever again.
He looked at me closely in an attempt to ascertain the sincerity of my words. Obviously, he was satisfied with what he saw, because he didn't pick up the topic again.

Instead, he said. "Good, I'm gonna call the school, and you young Lady are going there tomorrow."

"But, Dad..."

He interrupted me. "No buts Taylor, it is bad enough that you already missed your first two days at your new school. I want you to go there. There is no reason not to. I'm better and depending on when school ends, you will be here by the time I'm released, so there really is no need for you to waste another day sitting at my bed."

Reluctantly I agreed. "Okay, but only because my school day tomorrow ends shortly after lunchtime."

"That's my little girl, knowing her timetable by heart without even having set a foot in class." He grinned at me throughout the whole sentence, while ruffling my hair. I blushed.

My halfhearted effort in dislodging his hand from my head and outcry of "Dad!" elicited a hearty laugh from him.

"See, I'm all better. There really is no need to worry. How about you make your way home, and go to bed early. You have an exhausting day ahead of you. And I have to make a few calls."

Despite my displeasure of being sent home. I couldn't deny that dad was right. In any case, his having to stay another day presented me with the ideal opportunity to get a few things done.

"Okay, Dad."

I hugged him as a goodbye and left the hospital grinning. There was a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued.

Back for mere minutes and I hate Danny again...-_-
No idea what happened, no idea what's going on, but listens to the doctor and just steps on Taylor even trying to say anything, yep, par for the course.

Decent chapter, one thing though. Isn't it still Summer Vacation, even if it's near the end? Why would Taylor be missing school if it hasn't started yet? It's been less than a week in story right? That's not nearly enough time for school to have started up again.

The story started Sunday afternoon the day before school started again -
Taylor then went to visit Emma ...
Monday Danny had his "stroke" ... and Taylor revived Annette
Tuesday she went to the hospital ... to the cemetery ... to the warehouse ... made her acquaintance with Alabaster and Crawler and went back to the hospital ...

Therefore chapter 8 takes place Tuesday - the second day after the end of summer vacation -

I hope that clears up the timeline for you. (So far whenever a new day began the current date is mentioned atop of the chapter)

Gotcha, makes sense. Dunno why, but every time I think of that particular scene it's end of August in my head, but not right before school starts since I just don't think of a summer camp as being run right up until the start of school, usually there's a week or two of buffer so kids can get ready for school. Least that's how it was for me. Also I forgot this is Semi AU since Othala is dead among other things so Taylor not visiting Emma right after she got home makes sense as well.

Chapter 09 - Shadow Cabinet

Chapter 09: Shadow Cabinet

After an uneventful walk from the hospital, I eventually reached home. I didn't waste any time and immediately retreated to my room.

I closed my curtains and sat down on my bed to make space for all of my shades and summoned them around me. Nevertheless, it was crowded and I thanked the fact, that I was able to combine my Shades because the fusion of Mom with this other woman already reduced the number of shades that had to fit in my room.

I didn't ponder on the shortage of space for long. After all, I had no intention of keeping them around, especially the male ones. In the few days since I started using my power, I saw enough skin to last me a lifetime.

I only wanted to learn what each of them could do and then reduce their numbers even further by combining them into stronger, more versatile Shades. I had some small hope, that this would even allow them to promote their ability to the next level, thereby reproducing what happened to Mom.

Of course, even in the event that it was successful, this came with downsides. Alone the reduction in action economy this would result in if I use all of my Shades at the same time might be considerable. Mostly depending on how many Shades I could merge into one. But I held the opinion that the upside of a broader skillset with fewer weaknesses for my New Shades alone might be worth it, and that was without taking the possibility of combined powers evolving into account. And since it wasn't permanent, I would always be able to adapt to situations by splitting them again should the need for it arise.

I started with my two Shades without Shards, Aka and Kuro, and fused them together into a new being. Instead of Kuro, who I used as a base and in which I essentially stuffed the Shade of Aka retaining his appearance, as it occurred in the previous instances when I combined Shades in the possession of Shards. I found myself face to face with a Shade being neither Kuro nor Aka, but an even bigger and more muscular fusion of their physical traits.

"That was unexpected. Am I right to assume that both of them don't possess a parahuman power?" asked mom, who had seated herself right next to me. I nodded, and she added. "I think that is might be the reason for this. Your power, most likely noticed that their only usefulness lies in their physical capabilities and therefore added them together this way, enhancing the end result."

She had a point, and I couldn't help but wonder how this scaled up. It could be just a simple addition of their strength, or maybe it follows some other more esoteric concept. Probably something to keep an eye on, especially if I ever create more Shades out of normal people.

"Yes, you are right." I agreed, "I also wonder if it's just physical strength that increases this way or if it includes other aspects like speed, reaction time, and resilience. It should be possible to mimic a brute mover combination with enough shades stacked together."

"Something to keep in mind," mom added thoughtfully, "any combination of those two ratings is more often than not on the stronger side pertaining to para-humans. Do you sense any repulsion force from the Shades by stacking them together this way or something else unusual?"

"No, nothing. Hmm, let me try something."

I separated them again and let them walk closer to me so that I didn't have to stretch myself to reach them. With a simple touch, I made direct contact with them and focused on the aspect of my power that I received from my Allfather-Shade and changed them with it. I gave form to the first image that came into mind thinking about them and Created a Samurai armor around both of them, including a katana each, sheathed at their sides.

Scrutinizing their forms, I grinned at my success. They truly gave off an impressive vibe looking like this, clad in obsidian black armor, wearing demon masks. The idea to do this, came to me when I remembered, that both of them had some knowledge about sword fighting, which brought me to my next experiment. I fused them back together again, and I had to say I liked what I saw. Not only did the end-product result in a bigger Samurai the combined Armor got a meaner look, too. What surprised me at first was the fact that the swords didn't become one but stayed separate, with the New Samurai wearing one at each side of his hip.

It probably had something to do with the fact that before I fused them, they wore their swords on different sides, a clear indication that one was left the other right-handed, and I would wager, this new Warrior in front of me was ambidextrous.

"That's really great if you ever have the need to downplay your power. You could just say that you are a master using humanoid shadow constructs." Mom suggested. "Given their looks, it would probably be the default assumption of anybody who sees them, anyway. Combine that with the ability to merge them into a stronger Warrior, and it qualifies by itself as an interesting power-set. However, at the same time, it would also omit what you really can do."

"Right, something to consider for later." I separated them again and unsummoned one of them. Looking at Iron Rain, I made her take a step forward and commanded. "Shoot him with one of your metal raindrops with the same force a bullet fired from a rifle has."

Her response consisted of a [Affirmative] she sent my way and a lazy swipe through the air. The next thing I heard was the loud sound of metal colliding with metal, followed by a faint sound of something hitting the carpet of my floor.

Straining my eyes, I could barely make out a scratch in the center of the armor, protecting the torso of my Shade. When I leaned closer to get a better look when it vanished as if it never was there in the first place. At the exact moment, it disappeared I felt a tiny weeny bit weaker.

It felt exactly the same way when I destroyed one of my Shades only far less pronounced. What surprised me was the speed of the regeneration. It took a destroyed Shade a few hours to reform whereas it merely took moments for the armor to repair itself.

Meanwhile, mom had stood up and walked over Kuro, tracing the formerly dented part of the armor, "that looked awfully familiar, like when Alabaster regenerated himself."

"That's it. So my power once more adapted a power for its own use."

"Seems that way, and I have to say this is beyond useful because if I'm right, this will allow any one of your Shades to near-instantly regenerate, making them unkillable," she mused.

"Not exactly," I dampened her enthusiasm, "my best guess is that regeneration scales with the damage done to them in how much it takes out of me. Regenerating one from complete destruction slightly exhausted me and what happened to his armor was barely noticeable."

"I see, therefore it only serves to speed up the already existing restoration process of your Shades?"

"Yes," I agreed, "but as you said, it's still an extremely useful ability to have. The armor, I created is undoubtedly bullet-proof. So aside from some capes with a lot of fire-power at their disposal, there isn't much capable of inflicting significant damage to them."

Next, I fused Kuro with Mom and asked her. "Do you feel any different?"

"No, not really. It seems to be no different than the other times you did this. I notice some new skills I gained access to, and I feel physically stronger, but that's about it." She looked down at herself and with a chuckle, said, "at least I don't get his looks. I don't think I would look good bulked up with muscles."

I smiled at her small joke. I separated them again and unsummoned my second Samurai and focused on the remaining 13 Shades, not counting Mom.

Iron Rain, Freya, and Allfather I already knew what their powers were capable of. The same was true for the girl with the Echolocation. That left those other two girls.

I pointed at the older one and said. "She possesses an ability that allows her to overclock her senses and processing speed, making the world look like it is advancing in ultra slow motion. "

"That's a useful ability, especially in concert with others. I guess with a power like hers she'd have no trouble counting the wing beat of a hummingbird?" She paused for a moment. "Hmm, Hummingbird, wouldn't that be a good name for her until we find out if she was active and had a cape name before you found her, Taylor?"

"Probably, but why even bother naming them?"

"For convenience sake, of course, to avoid misunderstanding when we talk about them." mom explained.

"Okay, Hummingbird, it is." I tried to fuse her with Mom and immediately felt the repulsion force fighting against it. I loosened my grip on them, and they separated again.

"Too bad," she said, disappointed, "that would have been a useful power to have as a Striker." She was right. I couldn't deny that.

"Perhaps we'll have more luck with the next one." I pointed at the other girl. "She's far more interesting, able to tag items exceeding a certain size, including people, and is not only able to spy on what is happening in the immediate vicinity of those tagged objects but is also able to teleport to them."

"That would make her one of those rare teleporters not limited by line of sight," mom said, excitement quivering her voice, "which explains why she can access what happens around her tagged objects. It wouldn't do her any good to teleport only to end up stuck in a wall whenever a tag of hers gets moved out of place."

I nodded along, "the only downside, if you can call it that, of her ability, I could make out is that she can only take persons and objects with her that combined weigh less or as much as herself."

"Given that she has the body of an 8-year-old girl, this isn't much." mom added dejected, "She won't even be able to take you with her, let alone me or any of the other Shades. Let's hope we are lucky and are able to fuse her with one of the bigger Shades, at least allowing for one passenger."

I was about to join mom in her disappointment when an inspiration hit me. Wasn't mass equal to density times volume? I fused this girl together with Freya and couldn't keep the grin off my face the moment I realized they didn't reject their fusion.

"I'm gonna have so much fun with you." I declared, grinning.

Mom had a puzzled facial expression for just a moment until she realized what I just did. She ruffled my hair and said. "Of course! You really are my smart little girl." it took some effort not to blush at her praise.

"What do we name her?" I wondered.

"Let's see, how about Blink?" Mom suggested immediately.

"No objection from me. The only thing that might be able to make this even better would be if the other girl could fuse with them too."
I tried it, and my grin got even more pronounced. Watching me, Mom drew the right conclusion.

"A success, good those abilities combined together is what I would call a nightmare to contend with."

Which reminded me, "wouldn't this also be true in the case of Iron Rain having Allfathers power?"

"Yes, yes," mom enthusiastically agreed, pinpointing the two shades in question with her gaze, "do you think they would go together?"

A moment later, and it was confirmed, my power loved me. Another success of combining two powers together into one, but this time the powers didn't only get added together, they evolved into something new, enhancing each other.

"Something is different." I informed mom, "Iron Rain now is able to excrete metal even faster, and has a greatly increased output compared to them being separate. Furthermore, the smaller range of Allfather power got extended to the full range Iron Rain can exert control over metal."

"Which means, fusing them together resulted in a huge power-up. That's scary. Iron Rain was already said to be one of the strongest capes to have operated in the Bay. For her to get even more powerful as one of your minions is a frightening prospect, especially since as far as we know there is no limit to how powerful your Shades can become."

"I know it scares me too," I admitted with a shudder running through my body.

"What do you mean, Taylor?" Mom asked by tilting her head uncomprehending, "It's your power. You don't have a reason to be scared of it. Those opposing you in the future are the ones who should be."

"All this power at my disposal, what if I decide to do something bad with them?" I asked in a trembling voice, not daring to meet her eyes "It would be hard to stop me."

"Taylor, why do you think yourself capable of that, doing bad things? "
She paused, and when my response consisted of silence, she continued saying. Placing her hands on my shoulders. "Taylor, listen to me, I'm your mother, there is no one knowing you better than myself, I might even know you better than you do yourself, and I can say with absolute certainty you aren't evil. And I can't picture you committing any atrocities."

I gave her a questioning look at her specific use of vocabulary.
"Don't get me wrong, being a cape myself, I know what things can happen to someone and that most would be able to steal, maim and kill if given a reason to. I'm no exception to this, and we are similar in this regard."

"Since I'm already a killer, you mean." It was hard to keep the accusatory tone out of my response.

"In a sense, yes." Sighing, she added. "However, you probably misunderstand me. There's a reason that we have a justice system and that every crime gets its own process with judges determining the sentence because it's simply impossible to judge someone fairly without knowing what drove them to commit the crime in the first place. There are mitigating circumstances, and sometimes it's even justified to end the lives of others."

"That's why you said atrocities and not killing or murder because you think under the right circumstances it's the right thing to do."

"Yes, my little girl," she said with a soft smile, "the very fact that you even have self-doubts shows me you have a conscience, and you can't just lose such an integral part of your very being. It is something that makes you, you. Therefore I'm certain you are unable to commit such things."

I thought about her words carefully, and it didn't escape me, how she defined me, allowing for an alternative interpretation to what she tried to convey. I wondered if that was intentional. Given the expertise of my mother with the English language, I doubted it was a mistake. She worded it that way deliberately.

Then I just had to make sure to stay true to myself. After coming to this conclusion, I nodded and directed my attention back to the remaining Shades.

Talking more to myself than to her, I wondered, "so, what else do we have?" and focused on one of the remaining women. "This one has touched base ability. She is able to change the position of objects and persons on the time axis, including herself. Effectively allowing her to change the age of everything she touches in both directions."

Following my gaze looking her up and down, mom asked, "do you think she might be able to use her power to heal?"

"I guess so. Why?"

"Because," she started to explain her interest, "it's exceedingly rare for powers to have that ability. In most cases, it's just a side-effect of the given power. Therefore you having one let alone two Shades with healing abilities is quite unusual given the small number of Parahumans with powers like these."

I tried fusing her with Mom, and it stuck. Unfortunately, since the Shade was also limited to touch, I was no closer to learning the rules pertaining, when Shades can be combined and when they can't.

I returned my attention back to the Shades. There were three women left, one with hip-length straight hair, one with shoulder-length curly hair, and the last had a bowl cut.

I ordered the long-haired one to step forward. "She's a cryokinetic not limited to touch, but the closer she's to the object, she tries to affect the stronger, faster, and more pronounced her ability becomes. Furthermore, she can affect the area around her to conjure ice to use as projectiles and barriers."

"How good is her range?" Mom wanted to know.

"Not nearly as good as Iron Rains, it also gets weaker like her cryostasis ability the further away she is from the area she tries to affect."

"Pity, regardless that still makes her a really decent Shade. What about the others?"

The curly-haired walked next to her. "Woah, this one is strong," I said grinning and didn't continue in my explanation. The silence stretched for nearly a minute until Mom gave me her special `don't keep me in suspense, or I'm gonna tickle it out of your look. It was enough to reconsider my silence. Simply remembering the last time I was at her mercy was enough to elicit phantom pains of my laughing muscles.

She approached holding up her hands threateningly with her fingers in a tickling motion. In my haste to get away from her, I nearly fell off the bed. Luckily I was fast enough to get the words "I surrender, I surrender" out before the tickle monster could descend upon me.

The response was a smug grin and a hand wave, to signal me to go on and not to use any tricks.

Head held high, despite my devastating defeat, and with a promise to myself to get tickling revenge, I continued. "She is really strong, capable of throwing lightning bolts. On top of it, she can turn her body into lightning, making her impervious to most attacks. While she is in that state, she can project herself along as part of a lightning bolt thus allowing her to move around this way."

"Let's see, this powerset is somehow familiar. Wasn't there a ... Valkyrie!" Mom suddenly exclaimed, "she's Valkyrie!"

"Who?"

"She was the right-hand woman of the Empire 88 back in the day when I was still a child. According to Mythology, Valkyries were female helping spirits of Odin, the so-called `choosers of the Fallen´ roaming the battlegrounds picking the worthy for Odin's army of the dead. Which he then would reanimate during Ragnarok to fight at his side. But she gave that name a completely different meaning ..."

"Let me guess," I said exasperated, "the ones she chose were those who died."

"Yes, she was one of the most ruthless and efficient killers the Empire had in their rooster since its founding days. She was half the reason the Empire could establish themselves in Brockton Bay by driving out or killing their competition. She could go toe to toe with the best and was even able to come out the winner against whole teams of capes."

"How did she die if she was that capable?" I couldn't help but wonder.

"I don't know. One day she just vanished. As far as the general public was concerned, it was a good thing she did. I don't think there were many questions asked." One more thing for my list of things to look into. It certainly would be interesting to learn how someone like her could be killed. "What about her?" Mom asked while pointing at the last remaining woman in the room.

"She is probably the most interesting one of the lot. She can halt time." I smugly replied.

"On an object or person?" Admittedly, a reasonable question.

"No on everything." Hearing that response, mom was gaping at me like a fish. I shrugged my shoulders and said. "That's the best description I can give you of what happens when she uses her power. Time simply stops."

"So you are saying when she uses her power, the world just stops spinning and she is the only one capable of acting. There has to be a downside ... I mean that's just ..."

"Super strong? Unfair beyond belief?" I interjected, "It would be if you weren't right, her power does have a downside. As far as I can tell, while the time is stopped, she can solely interact with inanimate objects she can carry with her. Everything else is frozen in time preventing her from interacting with anything, not under the direct effect of her power."

"Which would mean, her power would look for any bystander not too dissimilar than regular teleportation." she mused.

"I'd assume so. I'm also pretty sure that she wasn't able to freeze the time indefinitely."

"What makes you say that?"

"Well," I wondered, "if everything is frozen in time, including the air, how did she breathe?"

"I see, meaning she could only use it as long as she could hold her breath," she concluded.

"Yes, but only if we rule out the usage of tools. A breathing device would have gone a long way to extend the time that she could halt the world. It would still have limited her but to a far lesser degree. Say, Mom, do you need to breathe?"

Momentarily stupefied by my question, she stopped her breathing, and a moment later, after she made sure, told me, "No, I don't."

I grinned while I pushed the Shade into her and to my surprise, there was no resistance. The Shade neatly fused with Mom. What really puzzled me, though, was that so far, I could combine her with any Shade possessing a touch-based power without a problem, but this new cape had something else. Not that I really could complain this power combined with what Mom already could do was utterly broken. Despite that, I would really have loved being able to establish some sort of guideline for my power.

"So, what do we call those Shades now part of you?" I asked her.

"How about Chronos for the one able to alter the proper time of objects and Kairos for the one able to freeze time?" She suggested, "They are both greek gods of time."

"No objections from me. I've always been bad at naming things." A light chuckle escaped my mother's lips at hearing that admission.

"I know, the names you gave your stuffed animals were the stuff of legends. What did you call your Teddy-bear again ..."

I had the strong desire to curl up and die and demanded, "Mom! Stop teasing me!"

"Okay, okay," she relented while grinning at me, "what about the last one? The striker/trump, who is part of me any ideas?" Still offended, I punished Mom with silence. "How about Pandora? Her name can mean `all gifted, `all-endowed´, and `all-giving´, and the last meaning describes fairly well what she can do."

Prodding me by bumping me with her hip, I said, "yeah, why not? I guess it fits."

"What about the other two?" she asked, "you think they would play well with me?"

"Let's find out." Of course, it didn't work. Strangely enough, I was able to fuse them together in the body of the Ice-Cape.

"Any idea of what to call her?" I asked mom.

"How about Chione, the Greek goddess of snow?"

"Good enough," I shrugged.

That left me with four uncombined Shades. Three of them, men and the girl with the sound thinker ability. "Let's call the girl Echo," she proposed. Unfortunately, she too, couldn't be paired with another Shade. "What can the other two do?"

I started with the man on the far right. He was a bald narrow-shouldered man about five and a half feet tall. "This is the Shade I got when I killed that monster that attacked us. His power is adaptive regeneration. Whenever he ..."

Mom didn't allow me to finish the sentence and instead did it herself, "... suffers damage of some kind, he doesn't just simply regenerate within seconds. He also adapts his body to withstand it better in the future, which resulted in complete immunity to the attack at a certain point under prolonged exposure. Shit, I knew he was somehow familiar, but I'm not surprised I didn't recognize him in the last picture I saw of him; he looked more like a large dog than a cross between a dinosaur and a Kraken. Taylor, let me introduce you to Crawler of the Slaughterhouse 9."

At the mention of that name, a chill ran down my spine. What was a member of the group of psychopathic murder hobos roaming and plaguing the North American continent doing in Brockton Bay?

"You are kidding, right?" I said pleadingly. But the grim expression she displayed disabused me of the notion. "Does that mean the rest of them are still around, maybe even hunting us, hunting me for killing one of them?"

"I don't know Taylor, but if they are around, it's strange that we have neither heard about it nor were attacked by now. And since they recruited Shatterbird, it's next to impossible not to notice them if they are around."

"So you are saying he was here alone? Why?"

"Yes, I think so," she said. "I don't have more than circumstantial evidence, but think about it. He climbed out of the bay. There weren't any sightings of any member of the Slaughterhouse nine in the region. Otherwise, the public would know about it by now. So either they bid their time for whatever reason or Crawler was operating alone. I consider the second option to be the more likely one. Either way, we should postpone discussing the what if until we've got a better grasp on the capabilities of your Shades. Should we have to fight them, it might be vital. Furthermore, I also think we should act on the side of caution and look up the Slaughterhouse 9. Find out who is in their current roster and make ourselves familiar with their capabilities. We should form plans for every eventuality and ..."

Mom noticed that I was about to obsess over it and placed a hand on my shoulder at this. "Don't worry Taylor, I'm with you every step of the way, and I don't intend to let anybody hurt you," she assured me. It helped to soothe my nerves. After a few deep breaths, I managed to regain my calm.

Who would have thought that I not only survive an encounter with one of the Slaughterhouse 9 days after my first real power usage but what was even more surprising that I came out of it the winner?

I turned back towards Crawler, and I had to admit that I had trouble reconciling the unassuming Obsidian-colored man in front of me with the monster that emerged from the Bay and hunted me. Powers are weird. I tried to combine him with every other Shade I had but was unsuccessful in this endeavor.

"Listen, Taylor. You should abstain from fusing with this Shade yourself if you can help it." Mom warned me after the last failed attempt.

"Why?"

"I'm pretty sure the changes his power would make to you would be permanent even after you separated from him. Of course, to be certain, we would have to try it out."

I interrupted her. "So I would have to risk becoming a monster just to prove you wrong? Yeah, I'm not exactly keen on trying if I can help it." Instead, I focused on the other man. He had a slim build with nondescript with short hair if not for the missing left underarm. "This one can generate and manipulate magnetic fields in a large area around him. That should give him a decent Shaker and Thinker rating because he can feel them."

"Can he also create lightning?" Mom inquired.

"No, why are you asking?"

"Because according to physics, magnetism and electricity are different sides of the same coin, both able to influence and generate the other."

"So, he probably would go together with Valkyrie, who I already combined with Chione?"

Her nod confirmed my question. Since I had nothing to lose, I tried it, and as it turned out, Mom was right.

"That is incredible, similar to Iron Rain and Allfather combining him together with Valkyrie resulted in a major power-up – Valkyrie power is no longer just able to fire lightning bolts at someone but also able to control electricity in her surroundings the things you can do with that is mindblowing." I had so many ideas, and that was before I read up on the topic of electromagnetism.

"Tell me, Taylor, does his power have a restriction banning him from manipulating magnetic fields inside of living matter?"

"No, it hasn't." I answered, "He can do that."

"In that case, we don't have to find a name for him. This must be Tyr. The one-armed Empire cape, named after a Norse War god. One of the very first capes to earn himself a kill-order with a triple-digit kill count he accumulated within weeks of his first appearance. A true monster, back in the day, the newly minted Protectorate even had to send a hand-picked team of capes to the Bay to put him down."

My God, first Valkyrie, then Crawler, and now this. Does a cape without a body count even exist? Or does this come with the job description and is an inevitable fact that it is just a matter of time until you get into a situation that says kill or be killed? Or am I just having a streak of bad luck when it comes to the dead capes I have found so far? Because if not, then it didn't paint a nice picture when it came to capes, their personalities, and life choices.

Perhaps I had more luck with the last unidentified Shade. An extremely thin short-haired man. "He can phase matter into a permeable state so it's no longer able to interact with normal matter."

"I can see how such an ability could be useful. Creating pit traps, walking through walls are just two ways to apply his power that come to mind. It might even be used as a defense against projectiles if it could be erected as a barrier that affects everything passing through it." She paused for a moment pondering something and then asked. "Can he use it on the living matter?"

"No, he can't. But that doesn't mean his power can't be used to harm people."

"No, it really doesn't," she said with newfound sobriety in her tone. "What do you think about the name Rift for him."

"Sounds good. Now we only have to merge him with one of the others." Mom, as I suspected, rejected him. The second attempt was successful when I felt no resistance by pushing him into Chione.

"Good," she declared by clapping her hands together, "since we are done with this part, I think it's time for some costumes for us. Let's see, how about a dress for Chione? Considering that she can turn herself into lightning in addition to other means at her disposal to prevent herself from suffering any damage makes armor, not an absolute necessity. It certainly wouldn't hurt more protection usually is something to strive for. However, with your Shades being able to regenerate instantly, I think we can allow ourselves to act a little less on the side of caution, especially in this case to give us just a bit more leeway for her costume."

"I like that. Any idea regarding the design of her dress?" I wondered.

"I think a shoulder-free and sleeveless dress allowing her to show a bit of cleavage might go well with her figure. Unlike us, she has something to show off." I didn't like her potshot at our feminity. Something in my expression must have tipped her off. Because she added in an amused voice. "Don't worry, Taylor, having a rack isn't the only thing that makes a woman attractive it is just a small part of it. So what if we hereditarily don't lean towards big boobs, we have the long legs, a slim build, and great hair all things similar important, and believe me, bigger boobs are only desirable as long as you don't have them. Do you know what one of the most common ailments of women is? Neck and backaches brought about of what they carry in front of them. You should consider yourself lucky you are spared from that."

She looked down at herself and continued. "And this," she pointed at her breasts, "is not nothing, Taylor. Sure, you're probably gonna end up on the lower end of the scale like me, but you won't end up with less than I. I'm sure of it. You are just a late bloomer. Just have a little patience, and you'll see. You'll grow into a beautiful woman."

"Thank you, Mom." She gave me a short hug and riveted back on Chione.

"Hmm, that's good," she said, admiring what I had created so far, "but I'm sure we can do better. Make the dress longer all the way down to her ankle and slit it on both sides of her hips the whole way down. This way, it'll allow more freedom of movement." I followed her instructions and saw the costume take form. "Good, but something's still amiss. I think a train attached to a strap on her upper arms near the shoulder, mimicking a cloak would go well with the rest."

"I like it, with the long Black hair, she resembles a Wizard or some Noble lady."

"You are right. Hmm, how about we add some bracers and knee-high armor boots made out of metal, and of course, a mask can't be missing. Given her noble look, an ornated domino mask would be the perfect fit."
I gave her recommendation a try, and I have to say Mom knows her way around fashion because it looked really impressive.

"Woah," was all I could say to gave my awe verbalism.

"I know, I'm the best. But it's always nice to get it confirmed."

"Mom! Didn't you teach me, that `self-praise is no praise at all´" I chided her, which resulted in her mock pouting?

"You are so mean."

We only could keep it up a few seconds before we both started laughing like loons. I don't know how long we kept at it until we regained our bearings, but I was so incredibly glad to have her back. I wasn't even aware how much I missed those moments in which we just screwed around with each other.

"Four to go, not counting you." I was confused at her statement because there were still 5 Shades, including Mom, in the room.

Noticing my confusion, she elaborated, "Crawler won't need a costume, depending on if the clothes conjured by your power count as a separate entity from the Shades themselves, you clothing him in it might even turn out to be detrimental for his power."

"Yeah, it makes sense." I agreed, "If the armor or costume they are clad in counts as part of their bodies, it will change over time as his body does, so there was no use in designing something for him to wear if it changes anyway. But if it doesn't count as part of his body, putting him into armor would prevent him from getting damaged and therefore his power from adapting, making it useless. So why even bother."

"Exactly, so who is next?" she asked as I unsummoned him together with Chione to create a little more space and turned towards Iron Rain hosting Allfather's Shade. "She is easy." Mom declared and stopped my hand when I was about to touch her. "Why don't you let her do it herself? Or can she manipulate the metal you create with your power?"

"No, it's Darkness given form. Even if it looks like metal, it isn't. This means it wouldn't be a good idea to make a costume out of it for her. In case she can do a better job by herself, with Allfathers power."

My Mom gave me an encouraging smile at my deduction.
"I would say we make her a knight with everything that entails."

I didn't object. It was quite fitting if I considered the interaction I had with her as a Shade so far. After all, she was my Knight in shining armor, who came to save me, well without the armor part. I grimaced at the memory and the fact she was still standing naked in front of me.

I took control of her ability and excreted dark obsidian metal from every Pore of her skin and formed it into a perfect skin tight-fitting full-plate armor around her body. I took great care to ensure that it wouldn't hamper her movement. The end result of my efforts of crafting a full plate armor, which beyond all doubt only consisted of metal, looked more like power armor than what a medieval knight would wear. It was probably owed to the fact that it was formfitting, layered out of segmented plates at body parts that would not hamper her movement while simultaneously ensure to protect her. The helm I made for her only had a single horizontal slit to not obstruct her vision and otherwise hid her whole features.

"It looks really good, but something is still missing. It somehow lacks elegance. A tunic would go a long way to help with that. Since she doesn't have a crest to show off on her torso, it would be prudent to limit it to just the lower part. Split the fabric into two parts front and back at the hip and make it a little beyond knee in length." I followed her suggestion, "Good, and I think a cloak clamped at her shoulders would complete her look." Like before, Mom was right. It really streamlined her look.

"Now, she just needs a weapon." I formed a round metal shield and a sword, the weapon of choice for a knight. I took great care in making a fitting weapon for her, it didn't seem appropriate to give her a run-of-the-mill longsword. Especially considering that her power can make her constructs near indestructible, which was why I reduced the thickness of the sword to a little less than half of what a longsword usually had and improved upon the point of the sword, in the hopes of enhancing its penetrating power. On top of that, I adorned the length of the blade with runes and took great care in designing the crossguard, the end result had an elfin look. It was a weapon of grace, not of strength. When I was done, she sheathed her new weapon at her hip.

"Let's see, all that is left is to figure out, if we can make her costume stick, it would impractical if she had to form it anew every time you summon her. And I don't dare to think about what we might have to do with all the armor she sheds every time you unsummon her."

"I thought about it, and I might have a solution." For the first time since we started, I stood up and left the confines of my bed. I walked the few steps separating us from her and placed my hand on her armor above her heart.

I closed my eyes and focused on the Abyss within me. It took me a moment to exert my control over it, a task that seems to get easier the more experience I gained with it. Channeling the abyss along my arm, into my fingers, allowed me to inject threads of the darkness into the metal my hand was in contact with. I let it permeate the armor, the shield, and the sword saturating them in darkness. Weaving webs through them and Iron Rain. I connected them with her very self, giving the idiom `become one with your weapon´ a completely new meaning. Because it was exactly what I accomplished. When I was done, there no longer was a separation between her and her equipment. Enhanced this way, they still retained their metallic properties contrary to objects formed from the Abyssal Darkness alone, putting it comprehensively under Iron Rains dominion.

I opened my eyes and unsummoned Iron Rain to check if it really worked. The lack of an empty armor on the floor in front of me said yes.

"How did you do that?"

"It is difficult to explain. The best way to phrase it would be to say I made her armor equal parts shadow and infused it with herself meanwhile keeping it metallic."

A feeble worded, "I see." was the response Mom gave me at my lacking attempt at explaining what I did.

To take her mind off those things, I said. "I might have an idea for a costume for Echo."

I touched her at the shoulder and clad her into a sleeveless ankle-length toga and added a few accessories to it; A theatre mask to cover her whole face and a good dozen bracelets on both of her arms and legs. Her wild short curly hair gave her an exotic look similar to how I always pictured a priestess of an ancient Greek temple to look, which was why I refrained from giving her any footwear.

"I can see the appeal in this costume. What about Freya?"

"I'm not sure," I hesitated, "her powers are all over the place, which makes it kinda hard for me to picture a fitting costume."

"I know what you mean, but we have to clothe her in something." she pointed out. "It doesn't have to be final. Consider it a placeholder until you've made up your mind."

I followed Mom's advice and just made her a formfitting costume out of finely weaved Darkness and added a domino mask. It should suffice for the moment.

That only left Mom and me yet to get ourselves a costume.

Unlike me, she already had an idea of what she wanted her costume to be like as she requested the moment it was clear that it was her turn, "I think a form-fitting armor, more akin to heavy leather than full-plate would suit me just fine. Made out of your Darkness, it should still provide good enough protection. On top of it all, I'd like a long and hooded coat."

I had to make a few adjustments until Mom was satisfied, but the end product looked really nice. Especially the hood that obfuscated her face even without the domino mask she wore exuded some eerie and dangerous feeling she reveled in. She really owned the Dark Eminence flair she was going for.

Which only left me. For a fleeting moment, I considered creating a plate armor for myself. I discarded the idea simply because items created by the abyss weren't weightless, and I suspected that a full plate would be too much for me to handle. Instead, I decided to use the costume of Mom as a base, and the only major alteration I made in comparison to hers was, that I traded her coat for a tightly fitting tunic. I considered the hood hiding my hair and a domino mask to be enough to hide my identity.

"Let's see," she said and bid me twirl around myself "That looks really good. You clearly possess a good sense of fashion."

"I'm sure you saying that has nothing to do with the fact that we look similar." I dryly commented.

"Of course not, Taylor. How could you even think me being capable of such cockiness."

She replied, whereas her barely contained grin told an entirely different story. I eye-rolled at that. Meanwhile, I had a different problem. The mask I wore didn't come with my eye prescription, rendering my eyesight, limited as it was without glasses, a liability.

Trying to intently read the lettering on the solar system map poster on my wall while holding my glasses clued my mother in, that or me blinking perpetually, that my eyes could be a problem for my cape career. I wasn't blind without my glasses but seeing only blurry outlines of things when they were farther than a few meters away didn't exactly help matters.

"Taylor, what are you doing?" she expressed her concern.

"Well, I can't implement lenses into my mask on the fly, and I don't feel comfortable in my room half-blind, let alone going out."

"I think you lost me. You make it sound like you're on the clock."

"Yes, I am. We don't have much time." I didn't elaborate on it further and mumbled to myself. "then, I've to rely on Echo."

"Woah, hold on a minute." She exclaimed, raising both her arms in a stopping gesture, "Listen, please tell me what this is all about? Despite all the new powers I got, I still can't read minds. So what is it you have planned that requires you to have perfect eyesight?"

"Right," I drawled, "you weren't there with me." She motioned me to go on with my explanation. "In the hospital during lunch hours, I overheard Panacea on the table next to me talking about one of those monstrous capes in PRT custody unable to control her body."

"Okay," she nodded along, "I still don't see how that is even remotely connected to your actions a minute ago."

"Well, that wasn't all that was said."

"I gathered as much. However, the fact that you are reluctant to tell me doesn't inspire confidence that I'm gonna like what you are about to say. Therefore can we cut this dilly-dallying short, and you just come out with it?"

I took a deep breath. "I also overheard her saying, that this cape killed people." While in the process to voice a retort, I hastily told her. "She couldn't help it, she has no real control over her body, and it reacts to stimuli violently. Mom, the guilt over those actions she had no control over is killing her."

Sighing, she summarized, "Let's see if I got this right. You overheard someone telling this sob story of this cape, and of course, as bleeding hearted as you are, you can't just let it go?"

I just nodded at her. Burying her hand in her curly hair, as it was her habit whenever she was frustrated, she rotated once around herself to calm down.

"What are you gonna do?" She inquired, incredulously, a sliver of frustration still noticeable in her voice, "Call the PRT and ask them nicely if you can swap by and visit their prisoner, and since you are already there, take away her power for good?"

"Well, I was hoping you could make the call." As a response to my well-intentioned plan, I received a deadpan stare.

"That is a monumentally stupid idea, Taylor."

Fidgeting, under her hard stare, I nonchalantly suggested a different course of action, "Well, we could just skip the call and visit them without prior announcement."

"That's not what I meant Taylor," she chastised. "You can't just go around and tell people you can steal powers. That's a dangerous thing to do."

"I know that," I said and was harshly interrupted.

"Obviously, you don't. Otherwise, you wouldn't have come up with this dumb idea. I thought we went over that with Alabaster." She heavily sighed. "Listen, Taylor, at the end of the day, no matter how strong and versatile your Shades turn out to be. You are still a master-class cape. That means you can be hurt, captured, and killed. This was a realistic scenario when you only could reanimate the dead. What do you think is going to happen if there is even just a hint of a rumor that you can steal powers? That you can take away the only reward every cape got for surviving their personal worst day of their lives. What do you think are they going to do out of fear of you taking away the very thing that most capes define themselves with after going through their personal hell?"

"They will take exception to it?" I weakly answered.

"That's the understatement of the Millenia, Taylor. The Gangs, at first, will try to recruit you and failing that, kill if you are a cape with a useful power to prevent you from working for their opposition. However, as power-thief, able to permanently steal them, they might skip this process entirely and sent kill squads after you, and it more than likely won't be limited to the local gangs because everybody might feel threatened."

"You've got to be kidding," I said nonplussed.

"I really wish I were." exasperating, coloring her voice.

"But we could only tell the Heroes and ask them to keep it a secret." I proposed enthusiastic, assuming to have found a way around that predicament.

"Government secrets even before people with powers existed weren't secure. Listen, Taylor, it will just be a matter of time until there is a leak and somebody we don't want to know will have access to that information. Even if they somehow could keep the secret, which I highly doubt, they will be after you for different reasons." She explained.

"But they're the good guys, the Heroes." I protested.

"Oh, I'm sure the Protectorate and PRT might be inclined to forgo the kill squads. However, it will hinge on your willingness to work for them, think about it, a cape able to permanently remove powers. They could come to the conclusion to use you as a deterrent and ultimate punishment for villains, and instead of throwing them in the Birdcage they instead get their powers removed. It would essentially end the double standard of the justice system. Because your existence allows them to reintegrate criminals back into the normal human society. This would also be just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine if you could start using those stolen powers. Every government would love it to regain the monopoly of power they lost with the emergence of Parahumans, which they could if they find the means to control you as their new weapon. Hell, it might even go as far as nation fighting wars over you because they'll consider you the new Eidolon or Scion."

She paused for a moment, thinking on something, and then asked me.
"Could you?" I was totally flat-footed, not knowing what she was inquiring exactly. My puzzled expression must have clued her in because she repeated her question. "Can you use the abilities you have stolen from other Para-humans? What we did in the hospital was me stealing the power and transferring it to you for a limited amount of time. However, can you use the powers you fed to your power?"

"I don't k..." I was about to answer when I thought better of it because instead of guessing, I could just try it out. I reached for the Abyss and felt both lone Shards still within the never-ending darkness residing under the surface. I was about to grab the shard I got from Dad when I heard Mom, who probably figured out my intentions solely by my unsure response to her question.

"Taylor, I think you should refrain from using your Father's power. It's too dangerous to use casually. Try Alabaster's first."

I heeded her advice and changed my choice. Figuratively I grabbed the Shard and fused with it. I was surprised when I didn't register any resistance. Which was in stark contrast to every prior instance in which I was fused with anything. It always was coupled with a varying degree of repulsion attempting to separate the Shade from me, an effect that was completely absent with this loose Shard.

"Okay, I now should have access to the power. How do we test it?"
I had barely finished my sentence when I felt my whole body being invigorated. I removed some of the remaining bandages on my scraped hands and noticed my injuries have vanished. "Nevermind me asking."

"I think that answers that question."

"Yes," I agreed, "but there is something else. I'm pretty sure I can use it indefinitely."

"That changes everything," Mom exclaimed.

"What do you mean?"

"His power, back in the warehouse, I got a really good look at it. Moreover, I even held onto it for a time, which is why I know exactly how it works. Luckily it just so happens to be a power every master class cape would love to call their own since it outright eliminates the most glaring weaknesses they possess."

My eyes widened in surprise. When I finally took notice of what the Abyss had to tell me about this power.

Which coincided with what Mom continued to say, "it resets you every 4.3 seconds into peak condition no matter the affliction, resulting in one being nearly unkillable. Additionally, I think it should be able to neutralize most master effects, which makes it a really good defensive power. Especially in the hands of a master like yourself where they themselves are the liability in fights, either having to hide or having to be protected by their minions or teammates in order not be taken out."

"Well, that's just great." I rejoiced, "does that mean that we can go and save the Case 53?"

"No - " was the short and hard answer Mom gave me.

"Why not? You said it yourself, a major reason you were against it was out of fear for my wellbeing. Now, despite the fact that I gained the means to stay safe, you still won't budge."

"Because it in no way has any significance when it comes to the other points I made, the very moment the cape community is made aware of your existence, you are in danger..."

I interrupted her and started listing what she told me mere moments ago, "of forced recruitment, blackmail, and death in various different shapes or forms. I get that. It's just." I had to pause a moment to get my failing voice back under control, "I wanted to do some good with those powers." I couldn't help but look at my hands, hands that took two lives.

Did they deserve it? More than likely, but it didn't diminish the foul taste it incurred whenever my mind wandered back to them.

I looked up, directly in her teal eyes that were trained on me. I noticed her facial expression going through several changes until it settled into something I identified as determination. She closed the distance between us and hugged me suddenly.

For some reason, my eyes started becoming wet, and I had to fight back tears. "I just want to do something good, with those powers. I ..."
She released her hold of me and looked at me with an unreadable expression.

"I understand, more than you will ever know," she told me with a grimace on her face, "However, there are other ways to do good, ways that don't pose such a huge risk. "

"I'm probably the only one who is even capable of helping this Case 53." I blurted out, "didn't you always teach me, that is the right thing to do to help if you are capable of it? Didn't you teach me proverb Noblesse oblige and even explained to me what it means? I only want to uphold what morals you imparted to me, is that so wrong in your eyes?"

"Of course not, Taylor, it ..." She sighed, "Listen, I just want you to be safe. In my eyes, you are still that little girl that scraped its knee while playing tag with our neighbor's cat." I saw the small smile on her lips at that memory. It didn't escape me that it was forced. "Looking at you on your way to becoming an adult, using my own words against me in an argument, it seems like it was an eternity ago that I held you in my arms. It finally starts to sink in that you aren't a little kid in need of protection anymore, that you are capable of making your own decision."

She sighed again. "You are going to stick to your guns until I relent, aren't you."

My response consisted of a cheeky grin.

"Okay, okay," she relented, "However, we are gonna do it my way, understood?"

"Yes, Ma'am." I saluted her and nearly pricked out my own eye with the temple of my glasses. "Too bad that Alabaster power is unable to do something for my eyesight."

"With all the powers at your disposal, it's likely we find some way to either restore your eyesight to what it should be or to side-step the problem entirely." She closed the distance between us and touched me. After she allowed some time to elapse, she asked me. "Do you notice any change to your sight?"

"No, why? what have you tried?"

"I used the regenerative ability of Pandora on you, but it doesn't seem to work. Let's see," she tipped her chin with her index finger, "can you release your hold on Alabaster Shard? It might be its power is interfering with the healing process. Since it's slow going, you aren't able to notice any changes before you are reset."

I did as she suggested, and she touched me again. After waiting for another minute, I informed her, "still nothing."

"Kraios power won't fix it either, since your level of eyesight is anchored to your age." Mom inhaled deeply. "I really hoped to avoid resorting to it. However, it seemed my hopes were for naught. Unfortunately, I see no other way to solve it with what we currently have at our disposal. Taylor, I want you to fuse with the Shade of Crawler."

"But you said not to less than 5 minutes ago," I remarked.

"I know what I said, and I stand by it. His power is dangerous, it might change your body until it is no longer human, and I don't want that to happen to you. However, it also is the sole solution to your bad eyesight, which is why we are making a one-time-only exception. Use the Shade, and keep it short, just until your eyesight has improved."

I followed her instructions and the changes to my sight were near-instantaneous, restoring it to what it always should have been under ideal conditions. The healing was accompanied by some tingling in my eyes, for some odd reason, I also felt a tingling sensation throughout my whole body to a lesser degree. I didn't keep the fusion up long enough to find out what else his power thought was in need of improvement, and after I discarded it, I reequipped the Shard of Alabaster.

There were still some things I had to test while, what I assumed would be the default Shard in the future, was active.

I fused with Freya, which I had still standing around in my room. The very first thing I noticed was repulsion force between her and the Shard from Alabaster, far weaker than I assumed it would be since the Freya Shade consisted of 3 Shades and their respective Shards. But given the effort it took me to keep being merged this way, I would have thought, that she just was in possession of a single Shard.

This was a pleasant surprise because it meant by combining Shades with Shards, I can reduce the strain put on me during a merger, allowing me to push the limit far beyond what I could have managed with separate Shades. It looked like I made the right decision when I combined them and I intended to keep them that way.

I sent Freya back into the Abyss and just for an instant, reached for the Shard of my Dad trying to verify if all unallocated Shards lack the repulsion force or if it has something to do with other Shards, making the repulsion an inherent characteristic of them.

As it turned out, I could fuse with Dad's Shard without a fuss. Which confirmed my theory the Shards are the reason behind the repulsion force because they reject each other. I was about to summon Aku, in an attempt to push the Shard I got from Alabaster into him to see what happened but ultimately decided against doing it.

His Shard was far too valuable to risk it in that fashion. Honestly, I didn't expect the shard to vanish into thin air or stop working altogether but in case, that I would no longer be able to separate them again, once they are one, I would have thrown away the one thing that might save my life one day. Admittedly I wouldn't lose the power usage per se, but I would lose my constant access to it. I debated if I should risk it with the Shard of my Dad, but that seemed to be a monumentally worse idea.

As a result, I decided to postpone this experiment until I got my hand on a Shard that I wouldn't mind losing. "So, how do you propose we proceed in helping the Case 53?" I had just closed my mouth after asking this question. When I noticed a book in the hands of my mother, I could have sworn wasn't there a moment ago. And did Mom just flicker?

"We have to break in, obviously." She made her way towards my desk and placed the book on it, I managed to take a glance at the title on the spine of it and wondered how `How to kill a Mockingbird´ would be able to help us. "Your father never liked this book, he, in fact, despised it. Therefore I thought it might be a good hiding place."

She opened the book and got my first look at a number of folded pages placed into a hole cut into the book. Mom removed them and laid them out on the desk. "Those are the Plans of the PRT Headquarters Downtown, including all there is to know about their holding cells."
I gave her a questioning look. I was speechless. Why would Mom have them lying around? "They might be a little outdated. However, I think it's not a problem we won't be able to handle. "

"Why? How?" She grimaced at my questions as if remembering the answers to them inflicts bodily pain on her.

"Listen, can we postpone talking about this? It is not a topic I'm comfortable talking about, and I don't want to be responsible for your mind being elsewhere during our break-in."

I was about to retort when she preempted my objection. "Please, Taylor." I can't remember hearing her being that desperate. "I'm gonna tell you all about it, just not now."

I nodded and let the topic drop. And we concentrated on the plans in front of us.

Authors Note:
This chapter really was difficult to write for various reasons. I tried my best to disguise the infodump it contains into something resembling a part of a story... not sure how well I succeeded in it. You are gonna be the judge of it.

A few things to note, most of you might rightfully think I overdid it with new names for Taylors Shades in this chapter and the ensuing problems to recall them, especially if they don't have regular appearances. I'm aware of this problem which is why I'm happy to inform you it won't take long (a few chapters down the line) until her naming scheme goes back to the drawing board and she comes up with something a little better, reducing the number of names you have to keep track off.

"Well," I wondered, "if everything is frozen in time, including the air, how did she breathe?"
If the air is frozen in time, but present, she wouldn't be able to move. Actually, you might be able to force yourself into frozen air (because it is mostly empty space) but it would be like if you're perforated a billion times with tiny holes. It might have an effect similar to strong radiation exposure.

Oh, I'm sure the Protectorate and PRT might be inclined to forgone the kill squads.

I ordered the long-haired one to step forward. "She's a cyrokinet not limited to touch, but the closer she's to the object, she tries to affect the stronger, faster, and more pronounced her ability becomes. Furthermore, she can affect the area around her to conjure ice to use as projectiles and barriers."

I considered more than once writing a few sentences explaining that by using that power she sort of enters a breaker state that allows her to "move" through the air - sort of being surrounded by a thin impervious membrane - (at least it looks that way to the user - wouldn't be the first power that works different than it seems - Coil power comes to mind)

But decided against it - since the chapter already was an info dump...
Since you brought it up - I'll consider adding something...

@the DragonBard and @ptbptb thanks to both of you for pointing out those mistakes - really appreciate it.

The same was true for the girl with the Echolocation.
"Perhaps we have more luck with the next one." I pointed at the other girl. "She's far more interesting, able to tag items exceeding a certain size, including people, and is not only able to spy on what is happening in the immediate vicinity of those tagged objects but is also able to teleport to them.

Did... did you kill off Cricket and Mouse Protector as kids? Cause that sounds an awful lot like Cricket and Mouse protector.

I also recall a Protectorate cape by that name who operated in BB some years prior to canon. (Unless, by total coincidence, another author I read also created a heroic cape named Hummingbird and this is just a case of great minds thinking alike.)

"What do you mean, Taylor?" Mom asked by tilting her head uncomprehending, "It's your power. You don't have a reason to be scared of it. Those opposing you in the future are the ones who should be."

And that's another point for my "That is totally not Annette but some form of Conflict Drive pretending to be her" tally.

Well then.
1) On to the watch list you go.

B) A few interesting notes.
Taylor clearly has GUs power, especially since if the Fairy Queen was a thing here, she would have already been referenced. So, that is one major player already off the field. Then again...
Taylor was already crazy strong with just raising dead capes to her service. Combining powers of her Shades just puts her on the path to make GU look like... well, a little girl playing pretend, real fast.

Oh, and here's a fun thought. The last anyone would have seen of Crawler is him getting punted into the horizon by an Endbringer. And never being seen again.

...

Until his ghost starts running around BB, anyway.

...

...

And now I shall await Kaiser pissing his frilly pink panties when Taylor inevitably has super-mode Iron Rain & Valkyrie open up a six-pack of whoopass on the Empire.
Talk about things coming back to haunt ye, eh Mr. Anders?

...

And how could I not mention QA dumping Danny and jumping ship to [BEST HOST] the moment the option was even suggested.
Tay:"Oh, Queeny! Yer not supposed to be there!" *yoink!*
QA: "BEST HOST! Yaay!" *whoosh*

Danny: "Oww, my head. Did someone get the number of that truck?"

Given the precedent set by Annette, I feel they should be referred to as the person/body the others would be fused into (as Annette + others was still her, I feel that Iron Rain + Allfather should still be primarily Iron Rain).

Also, something that I would like would be some of the other Shades getting their own independent thought, and maybe Taylor can reward them with personal time (i.e. giving Iron Rain time to spend with Kayden or something). This can also be a plot point, as their actions in their free time may reveal Taylor's power (i.e. Iron Rain going to Kayden), and things will need to be done about that. If it is just Kayden that knows, things could be done to keep her quiet, as things would be kind of like when IR was in the Empire, only time with her is dependent on both IR's and Kayden's actions along with circumstances, but if someone else finds out, it could lead to ~Delicious Conflict~. And if IR does reveal it to Kayden, I would see Annette threatening Kayden over it.

Chapter 10: Attack on the PRT

Suddenly I found myself on the rooftop of a building a block away from the PRT Headquarters. It was the middle of the night. The streets were only illuminated by the streetlights and the moon visible through the cloud cover. At this hour, even in a city as big as Brockton Bay, the number of cars underway was nonexistent. The same applied to the pedestrians, especially in this neighborhood. From where I was standing I had an unobstructed view of the buildings making up the PRT Headquarters.

Freya released her hand from my shoulder, clad in my new costume made out of Shadow-essence, and touched the wall of the staircase door and marked it with Blink's ability. Thereby giving us a point of retreat, that also could be used as a near-perfect overwatch position.

Mom,

- No, not Mom. She impressed on me the importance of thinking of her in her cape persona while in costume. How it helps to separate her two identities if you could even call it such, with her being a Shade, reanimated from the dead. Apparently, it is a good habit to develop in order to prevent a screw-up in calling the names of your teammates in stressful situations. -

She was standing right next to us and carried another tag on her body, in between her shoulder blades. Like myself and every other Shade did, since a few minutes ago. I used it as a teleporter beacon to bring Freya and myself here.

Sending her ahead while she used the power of Kairos allowed me to reach this destination without wasting any perceivable time. By doing so, I also took full advantage of the seemingly nonexistent range limit at which my Shades could operate.

"Listen, Taylor. Before we start, there is one thing I absolutely have to know." Her slightly muffled voice originating beneath her hood said, dead serious, only to follow it up with the question, "did you come up with a name for yourself?" I didn't need to see her face to know that she wore a shit-eating grin while asking me that.

I gave her the best I could manage of an annoyed glare, with my whole face hidden behind my mask. But it didn't stop Mom from interpreting my meaning and laughing at my mock anger.

"It isn't easy." I pouted as I crossed my arms in front of my chest.

"Of course it is," she declared, wiping a non-existing tear from the corner of her mask to emphasize her ridicule, "you are just overthinking it."

"Well, not everybody can cheat like you and stretch a second into an eternity to think on it." I shot back.

"In fact, you can." was her short response, while her statement was true. It made me roll my eyes at her, which in turn made her laugh even harder.

"Can we just start Sage?" I asked, not even trying to hide the annoyance in my voice.

The next time I blinked, Mom, or Sage, how she decided to call herself while in costume, was no longer standing on the roof. Instead, she appeared in the middle of the vast greenery next to the multi-story PRT building.

She placed herself directly above the underground facility hidden beneath the ground. Freya didn't hesitate. Directed by me, her hand came to a rest on my shoulder, and an instant later, we stood next to Sage.

I summoned Chione and used the power of the Shade called Rift to make the matter the ground was made out of, permeable, which in turn formed a small hole of see through and walk through matter right in front of us. I made sure to extend the cylinder of shifted matter down until it reached the deepest level of the facility.

Freya loosened a dagger I had formed out of her essence as a means to deliver her tags and dropped it in the hole. Meanwhile, Chione charged up a ball of sparkling lightning between her two hands and threw it down behind the dagger. The moment the ball made it through, she rescinded Rift power, and the hole disappeared.

I was somewhat surprised, that I could do all that without encountering a problem. Somehow, I wasn't expecting my Shades to have the necessary multi-tasking ability to use more than one of their powers requiring high levels of concentration at the same time. As a result, I was prepared to have to separate Rift from Chione to pull it off.

It couldn't have been easy keeping the matter shifted while simultaneously using the combined powers of Tyr and Valkyrie to create and employ the EMP-charge.

Fortunately, that wasn't necessary. Another mystery I have to get to the bottom of. My preliminary suspect for this multitasking ability I shared with my Shades was the Shard I got from Dad.

In the meantime, Freya touched Chione and teleported her to the overwatch position. A sensible choice Mom and I agreed on during the planning stages. For the simple reason that she was the one Shade that was best equipped to deal with any interference, from providing cover fire, a distraction, or just to stall one or two teams made up of your average Parahumans indefinitely. The moment she left us, I felt a small static charge passing over me. A second later, Freya returned to teleport both Sage and me to the dagger, deep down in the facility.

We rematerialized on sublevel three. The general area the holding cells were supposed to be located according to Mom's blueprints. Which I could only hope were still accurate.

There was barely any light after the EMP had disabled most of the systems, including all the bulbs. The only light stemmed from some luminescence bands placed every few meters along the corridor. The sparse sources of light they provided, even after my eyes adjusted to the dark, was barely enough not to run headfirst into a wall. I had to call myself to order, that no, I was not on the set of the newest horror movie, and I wouldn't die screaming to whichever monster was starring in it.

I fused myself with Echo, who granted me the sound-sense to be able to navigate through the near pitch-black darkness. It also helped to shift the focus away from my sight-based perception diminishing the tenseness and unfounded anxiety I experienced just by being here. It probably didn't help that my mind occasionally wandered back to the words of Panacea that I happened to overhear `she was ripping people apart while being a passenger in her own body´ and that I was here to meet this very girl. Within the confines of the best approximation of an abandoned Laboratory that could come straight out of any horror or zombie movie.

In retrospect, I really shouldn't have let myself be talked into watching all those horror movies with Emma and Anne.

I bent down, picked up the dagger, and gave it back to Freya. At the same time, I tried to make sense of the Labyrinth I found myself in. If I hadn't seen the plans beforehand and wasn't able to `see´ with more than my eyes, I was certain I would have been lost throughout the corridors, which are all looking exactly the same to me.

A good idea in general, I had to concede that point to the PRT because it makes break-ins and breakouts more difficult if you have problems orienting yourself.

A hindrance that was not applying to me. I was more worried about all the locked doors and the vast amount of containment foam that blocked off key points throughout the structure to slow down any movement to a near standstill - clever use of containment foam.

Luckily we arrived on the correct floor, thanks to Mom's blueprints. Otherwise, I would have needed the services of Rift once more to path us a way to our destination. We were even able to avoid having to pass through any containment foam barricaded crossroads and corridors by making a little detour.

The two guards outside the Case 53 cell were the main problem I saw myself confronted with. It was something we hadn't anticipated and, as a result, we weren't prepared for this scenario. We needed to devise a plan to deal with them, preferably fast and in a way that left them with no permanent damage.

I had to take them out one way or the other. Mom impressed on me the need for secrecy.

If that was still a possibility at this point. My actions, no matter how accidental they were, might have already put me on the map. Two ABB members mysteriously disappearing, and the Empire not only losing one of their capes - someone who was said to be unkillable - in conjunction with a heavy-armed squad of theirs, was really not something that wouldn't cause a stir. The only uncertainty was what conclusion they drew from it. But they no doubt suspected a Parahuman involvement of some kind - at least the Empire had reason to.

In an ideal scenario, aside from taking out their surveillance, the guards should have at no point been made aware of my presence. It was easier said than done. Even if I were to succeed in sneaking around them and into the cell of the Case 53, I couldn't risk them interfering or allow them to oversee something not meant for their eyes. Because of this, I couldn't just leave them alone.

I mentally went through the list of powers my Shades had at their disposal. There were numerous ways I came up with how to deal with them on short notice. Unfortunately, none achieved the boundary conditions I set for myself aside from one. But this one had the problem of giving away valuable information about my capabilities, which I was reluctant to do.

On second thought, I realized they would probably suspect us of having a teleporter in our midst either way. By a lucky picture having been taken by a camera monitoring the outside of the PRT building. The fact that we appeared inside their base right next to the holding cells without us having to walk down here.

Because of this, I was convinced that the course of action I decided wouldn't make a difference worth mentioning.

Freya teleported to the tag on the roof and threw her dagger to the ground below. Then I waited for the exact right moment, which came to pass just a few seconds later.

The two guards I was closely watching, already on alert, drew their guns after I listened in on their third failed attempt to re-establish communication with their Command Center. Something entirely impossible now that their radios were fried. The EMP did great work there, but I doubted that even if their radios would have miraculously survived somehow, that they could have reached someone. We were not only dozens of meters under the surface, what further complicated matters was that all the communications relay positioned throughout the walls of the structure were a molten mess.

They positioned themselves left and right in front of the heavy metal door, the Case 53 was behind. With no light and communication down, they retreated into the doorframe in an attempt to use it as cover. They came to a stop back to back with only a little space in between them. Both of them held their guns at the ready and pointed them down the two opposing sides of the corridor.

I could hear the steadily increasing heartbeats in their chests, the slight twitches of their muscles in their agitated state. All of it being signs of fear.

I was taken aback by the realization that, it was me who elicited those reactions in grown, trained adult men. I already knew in an abstract capacity that I was no longer a normal human. Nonetheless, it was an entirely different matter to be confronted with the reality of it.

Not even in my wildest dreams, I thought it possible to be someone's Bogey-Man. It would take me quite some time to get used to the fact that I was to be feared with the powers I had at my disposal. Depending on what I used them for, I held the potential to become a nightmare for humanity or one of their saviors.

I returned my drifting thoughts back to the matter at hand. There would be plenty of time to think of the implications I was just confronted with later back at home after I finished what I came here to do.

I reestablished the control over Sage's body like I did previously with my other Shades and activated the power she was granted by being one with Kairos. The change to my mind was immediate. It felt like some duplicate part of me was suddenly cut off, frozen in time, leaving only a small part of a greater whole behind, anchored in Mom while retaining its ability to act.

I probably should have tried that beforehand, back at home instead of in the middle of an ongoing operation. After all, it could have backfired in so many ways that I should never have risked attempting it here.

I stopped reprimanding myself at this juncture with the knowledge that no matter how good a job I did with it, Mom was surely going to be nagging me for my carelessness when we got home.

I turned my head and saw my own body standing there, unmoving, frozen in time. It was a surreal experience seeing oneself this way. Unable to resist the temptation, I reached for my face hidden beneath the hood of my tunic. The skin of my cheek felt cold to my touch like smooth marble hard, and immalleable. Thinking that I might have more luck with my hair, I tried to smooth a strand of hair sticking out from under my hood back. Realizing that it was utterly unmoving.

Apparently, the power of Kairos worked exactly, as advertised. As I retracted my hand, I noticed a barely visible sheen covering my arm - No, my whole body - and wisps of something skirting around it, filling the void of where my arm was just an instant before flowing around it.

Realizing that this must be the air displaced by my body redirected to the position my body occupied to prevent me from creating localized evacuated spaces. A pity - I was sure I could have found ways to weaponize this.

It took me a moment until I was able to avert my gaze from this spectacle. Given that Sage didn't have a need to breathe, I had time in abundance to reach the guards.

Nonetheless, I thought it prudent not to loaf around too much. I followed the dimly lit hallway taking a long way around, thereby avoiding all the obstacles. When I turned into the hallway the cell was located in, despite knowing what awaited me. I was startled for an instant as my eyes puzzled together that what I first thought to be some shadow was a gun at the ready pointed my way.

It was a disturbing feeling that permeated me at that sight. On the one hand, it was ambivalent because I was fully aware a simple gun was no threat to me, neither when the time was paused nor when it wasn't, given the properties of my costume and the fact that my real body was equipped with Alabaster Shard. But, on the other hand, there was this instinctual, more like acquired fear coming from seeing a weapon designed to kill people up close and directed at me.

I wondered how long it would take for somebody to get used to this, if at all possible, and if it would happen to me, eventually.

I continued my walk. The closer I got, the more distinct the badly lit expression of the PRT trooper facing my way became. Although parts of his face were hidden behind the visor of his helmet and the mask covering everything beneath his eyes, I couldn't deny the impression that it displayed fear and determination in equal parts.

The odd thing was that I was capable of reaching that conclusion with what little I could actually see of him. There really wasn't much that could give such feelings away. Short of his body language, as he pressed himself against the doorframe to maximize what little cover that provided, his dilated pupils with weapons held in his hands and fingers curled around the trigger was more expressive than I thought possible.

I moved the body of Sage in between them to the unoccupied space directly in front of the cell door. This way, both of them had their backs turned to me and each other. I readied myself for a backlash I assumed would hit me when the parts of my mind synchronized themselves once again, in an attempt to not lose the initiative while I regained my bearings.

I steadied myself and unpaused the world. Luckily, I had prepared myself. Otherwise, I would have been incapacitated for a few seconds. What hit me felt similar to when one of your limbs had gone to sleep and was suddenly in the painful process of reawakening. With the difference in my case being that it wasn't a limb but my mind.

There was this prickling sensation like needles pricked inside my brain while the separated parts reintegrated themselves back into one synchronized part, once more.

While enduring this fading-away repercussion, I managed to retain enough of my faculties to execute my plan.

I used Freya and teleported her immediately to the position of Sage and, without wasting a single second, simultaneously laid one of her hands each on the backs of both the Guards. Before they even had the chance to react to the touch, all three vanished and reappeared outside. Near the dagger, Freya had planted in the asphalt in front of the building.

She immediately teleported again, giving those guards not even enough time to turn their heads, and arrived back at my side. She recalled the dagger made out of her essence back to herself. It reformed out of wisps of Darkness in her hand. I took her other hand she offered to me, and an instant later, we reappeared next to Sage.

It never really occurred to me before how strong of power teleportation is in the right hands, how many combat-orientated applications it provides. Instantaneous transportation has a nice ring to it, and it is useful; no doubt about that. But this powerset isn't feared or infamous like so many others when it should be considered far more dangerous depending on the limits of the specific powerset than most other abilities.

It was I was sure something the guard outside would be willing to attest once they puzzled what just happened to them together based on the few clues they had.

I released Mom from my direct control and, for the first time, took a look at the door separating me and my target with my own eyes. It was a heavyset door that reminded me more of the entrance to a vault you would expect to find in a bank, not in a cell.

Hopefully, the reason she was incarcerated here was simply that all available cells are that heavily reinforced and not out of necessity to keep her contained.

At least what I `saw´ transmitted through the vibrations inside the cell gave me no indication that I was about to face a bloodthirsty killer. The mass of tentacles I could make out was curled into a ball at the far side of the room. She was trembling like a leaf and gave a picture the furthest from what I suspected a ruthless killer would look like. She was just a frightened little girl confronted with circumstances out of her control, precisely like Panacea depicted her.

The softly spoken mantra she recited to herself with a soft Russian accent, repeating the same words over and over again, telling herself to keep calm, just served to reinforce this impression.

If I wasn't already here to help her, seeing her like that would make up my mind to do just that.

"What's the situation?" Sage to my right softly whispered.

"She is scared and has retreated into a corner of the cell," I told her in response.

"I see," Sage pondered, "how do you want to proceed?"

"We should open the cell and talk to her," I suggested. "I don't want to presume to have the right to make choices for her. Despite evidence to the contrary, I wouldn't want to just take away her powers without asking if it is okay to do so."

"Not wanting to violate her right of self-determination by deciding something major like removing her power without her input or permission. That I can get behind," she said with a grin.

I was sure her essentially repeating what I said in a more technical term was loaded with innuendo I didn't have the context to understand, which was why I limited myself to saying, "I guess so-"

"You know, it makes me really proud hearing you talking like that. However, you surely can't think that she'd deny herself the chance of leading a normal life?"

"I don't." I conceded, "But I want to do this right this time"

A glance towards the charred intercom affixed in the door frame made it clear that any talk with her had to be face to face.

I summoned Iron Rain and moved her in front of me right next to Freya. Meanwhile, Sage positioned herself half a step behind me and laid her hand on me in passing. With a slight application of Iron Rain power, her complete reign over metal, the door in front of us liquified and flowed aside as we stepped through the entrance into the cell.

Sharing her senses, I witnessed how she restored the door by returning the liquid metal back into place. To make it perfect and in order to erase all traces of the door being dissolved. Sage followed it with a gentle touch of her own. A slight application of Chrono's ability was enough to restore the door to a point in time before it had been liquified.

"STAY AWAY!" the ball of tentacles screamed the moment she noticed our entry into the cell.

"Hello, little one, my name is T..." I interrupted myself before I could divulge my real name. I couldn't help but notice how Sage bit on her lips, in an attempt to prevent herself from laughing at my plight. I felt my cheeks heating up into a blush, and I was, for the first time, glad I was wearing a mask. If mom, - no Sage, I chastised myself - could see me like this, she would never let me live it down. Especially since being in this situation was my own fault to begin with, by not heeding her warning in how important it was to have a name to call yourself even on your first night out.

Which, when I thought about it, I really should have known better. She was the one of us with the experience and the habit to be right most of the time. Oh, how I hate it when she is right, and I disregarded her in favor of my own flawed judgment allowing her to say the words `I told you so´ with a knowing smirk on her face.

Couldn't she have been wrong just this one time and not let me look like a wise-ass on my first day as a cape?

"STAY AWAY!" she repeated herself, this time more forcefully. "I don't wanna hurt you, please I can't control myself." her next words were barely understandable through her sniveling "I don't wanna be responsible for more deaths, please." she begged, "Go away and leave me alone"

It was hard, despite knowing that I could help to ignore her pleading. I have never seen someone be as miserable as her at this very moment, and as a result, had to force myself to continue and not give in.

As a confidence-building measure, I took a step towards her and another which made it necessary for Iron Rain and Freya to take a half-step to the left and to the right respectively to allow me to pass them both. I lowered myself to my knees in order to get my head closer to her eye level.

It was a calculated risk, but one I was confident I could take since we were still separated by most of the room, and I was sure she posed no serious threat to any of us.

"What's your name?" I asked in a soft and steady voice. She was taken by surprise at that question, her pleading and soft-spoken words halted unexpectedly, and even her erratic moving tentacles moving around her head froze for an instant. Only to start anew barely a second later in what was probably best described as the closest approximation that her body was able to perform to hugging herself.

"I ... I don't remember." she stammered. I could see the signs of her being about to break down again after she admitted it.

"Well, in that case, you'll just have to choose one for yourself after I've cured you. But you probably should refrain from asking me for advice. I'm really bad at naming stuff, and the last thing I'd want was to screw that up. After all, you are gonna be using that name for quite some time if I have anything to say about that. I mean, I couldn't even come up with something for myself ..." I couldn't help my rambling. It happens whenever I'm confronted with a person I'm not already familiar with. It didn't escape my notice that she got exceedingly more agitated. She started moving around in a circular fashion within a small confined space not more than a few centimeters from her initial position.

It was more than likely her version of fidgeting from one foot to another. I was alarmed by her tendrils reacting to her new mental state, they acted out, some of them even lashing in my direction.

"What do you mean by cured?" she spat out. "I can't be cured. This healer girl couldn't do it. And they said she could heal all. Why are you making empty promises? Do you enjoy it to get my hopes up just to crush them?" She said, getting louder and angrier with every word she spoke.

"No, no, that's not..." I tried to soothe her, my hands raised in a placating manner when I realized it didn't have the intended effect on her. Switching gears, I gave it another try when I told her, "I genuinely want to help you." The space she bounced around in got bigger and bigger with every second. Her tentacles moved more frantic, giving off the impression to be less and less under her control. The more she lost her composure, the more her focus waned on keeping them in check, and the more they started to develop a life of their own. If what I gleaned from the words of Panacea, this meant attacking everything moving around her. "Please, calm down." I pleaded, "Let me explain."

"Calm down?! I was calm. I just wanted to be left alone, so no one would be hurt. It was you that ignored me. I didn't want to hear another set of empty promises to get my hopes up. I warned you not to get close. I told you I'm dangerous, so why didn't you just listen."

That was all the warning I got before she was in mid-air leaping at me. I already saw her tentacles around my head and crushing it like a ripe tangerine, but something blanketed my view on her a moment before she could reach me.

It took me a second to realize that it was Freya that stepped in front of me and plucked the mass of tentacles with both of her hands right out of the air, I could see how her tentacles worked their way along slung around her arms towards Freya's body, trying to entwine her, to crush her. But couldn't make any headway held in a steadfast grip, denying them any leverage to be used to escape.

The struggle continued for just a moment until Sage reappeared behind the girl well outside of the tentacle girl's field of vision and laid a hand on her. A second later, the tentacles ceased their struggling.

At least to my understanding, they simply lost their strength. Whereas before, Freya had to steady herself and use a modicum of strength to incapacitate the mass of tentacles, it now looked like she was holding a toddler instead of an angry cat.

"They don't obey me. What did you do?" the girl asked near panicked. If she had a ribcage, it would have been at that point that she would have started hyperventilating.

"I temporarily took away your power." Sage nonchalantly said from behind her.

"That's what I tried to tell you the whole time." I said, "We don't think we can help you. We actually know."

"Please," she begged now with tears in her eyes, "don't go away, don't leave, I didn't mean to attack you. I can't control myself when I feel strong emotions. Please, I will do anything... just... just don't go."

"I won't." I said, "I'm here to help you, and I intend to keep my word." which was enough for her to start crying. And for the first time, I really, without a sad overtone, was glad for having my powers, being able to help someone no one else could. It is how I always imagined it would be to have powers and use them for good.

Looking at her body, the confidence in my words faltered, and I couldn't stop myself from expressing my concern, "You think it will work?"

"I think so," Sage said, "it is hard to tell. Even with the two healing powers I have, I can't be sure ..." if she was gonna live long enough for me to use it on her, remained unspoken. Obviously, Sage shared the same worries I did after really seeing in what state her power left her body. She was merely a head with numerous tentacles sprouting out of it, lacking a torso and anything else that would be necessary to resemble a human being. I had no idea how she was even alive with her organs dangling from the largest tendril extending from the back of her head.

And I feared taking away her power permanently would leave her with only what I saw in front of me, her head, and I got the strong suspicion her tentacles might reverse to just being long hair. Even the one containing her organs.

Which would mean we had at most seconds to do something about it to prevent her death, not the best prospects for any kind of thing and especially not if life is on the line.

I noticed how the little ball of tentacles intently listened to us. Even if we didn't outright state our concerns, she seemed to pick up on them, her questioning eyes at least led me to that conclusion.

"How to say it best..." I asked myself aloud. "We can remove your powers, we have no doubt about that." her expression gave away her incomprehension "Unfortunately we can't be sure if you will survive the procedure. There is a chance that you might not survive the attempt."

"But there is a chance you can heal me, make me human again." I nodded at her question, and without any hesitation she commanded. "Do it."

"Are you sure?" I asked, trying to make sure she really meant it.

"Yes," she affirmed, "no matter how small the chance I'm gonna take it, even death is better than living like this." Her eyes trailing down at her non-existent body. "Should I die, I at least won't have to suffer any longer, and no one else has to die because of me."

I looked into her eyes, trying to find a sliver of doubt in them, anything really that would allow me to justify not to do it. But I only found acceptance and resolve.

Which didn't make things easier for me, on the one hand, I knew she was the one making the decision absolving me of any blame should the worst come to pass with her dying. On the other hand, it wouldn't matter because, at the end of the day, it would still have been me presenting her with the offer instilling new hope, and it would be at my hands that she would die.

She was supposed to be my redemption from the deeds I was forced to commit, a way to reduce my guilt, not something that would increase the load on my conscience manifold because, in my eyes, she would be the first innocent for whose death I would be responsible.

But would she really die? With my power, there was a chance I could resurrect her. Should I ask her for permission in this case...

I interrupted that train of thought. There was no guarantee that she would turn out any different than most of my Shades. Mom, Sage was an exception, nothing more, and what did it say about me, that I was willing to attempt this in the first place while I was expecting to fail - considering it to be a certainty. Anyone remotely reasonable would abort this before it was too late - something that can't be taken back.

I originally attempted this whole thing because I was convinced she was going to live, right?

Damn it, Taylor, this was not the time to falter. You are a Hero. Heroes save people, so that is exactly what you are gonna do, nothing else.

With renewed vigor, I gave Sage the go-ahead. She placed one of her hands on me and the other one on the girl's head amidst the tentacles. I felt the shard Sage pushed into me establishing a link with it. Without wasting any time, I unleashed the Abyss, its greedy tendrils reached for it and plugged the Shard like ripe fruit from a tree severing the connection.
The effects were immediate, the body of the girl started losing cohesion, the tentacles breaking and withering away, they crumbled to a necrotic mess on their way to the floor. While what little of her was left, barely more than head, was desperately gasping for air.

"I need enough mass for her whole body, set her down on the ground within her tentacles," Sage said. At a nod from me, Freya complied with her request. The instant the head was lowered into the pile of tentacles Sage applied regeneration and reversed the time on what was left.

At first, she only gained the upper half of a torso, the more the time was rewinded, and the smaller her body got, the more of it was restored, all the while the regeneration kept her alive.

During the whole process, the girl's breathing was suspended numerous times, and every time it happened, I feared that she was dead. Sage was clearly struggling with her task, finding a past version of her small enough that her body could be whole again.

If not for the progress clear to see, I no doubt would have felt compelled to end this right then and there. Seeing the girl constantly struggling to stay alive was the cruelest thing I have seen in my life, and I was only watching. I couldn't even imagine what it must be like for the girl.

Sage got closer and closer until she was successful, and the ever-changing body settled in a small form of a girl, I would guess her to be around the age of seven.

She was taking deep breaths and was recovering from the ordeal I put her through. I could feel her shard in the Abyss, which meant nothing less than I was successful. I felt giddy and couldn't help but inwardly smile at this.

"It's done." Sage declared, "Let's go before the PRT shows how they appreciate someone infiltrating one of their facilities."

She had just closed her mouth when I witnessed through the eyes of Chione overlooking the PRT headquarters from her overwatch position the arrival of Armsmaster on his Tinkertech bike. As a result, Sage's suggestion suddenly gained a lot more urgency.

I unsummoned Iron Rain and Sage, while I directed Freya, who was holding the head of the former Case 53 in her lap, to softly put her down. Her head was gently placed on the floor when she stirred, taking in her surroundings.

"See, I said I'm gonna help you." She looked at herself and couldn't believe what she saw, since she immediately touched herself and even went so far as to pinch her cheek, which now lacked the stylized c from before, making sure she wasn't dreaming. She started crying again, this time tears of joy.

"Thank you, thank you so much."

"Don't sweat it. That's what we Heroes do, helping those in need," I said to her. "I have a favor to ask of you." As she tried to sit up. But ultimately failed to do so, not fully adjusted to her new appendages, which made it necessary for Freya to support her.

"I'm gonna do everything you just have to ask." she declared immediately before she even knew what it was I wanted her to do.

"I would really appreciate it if you wouldn't tell the PRT or anybody else, for that matter, what happened here. Let's let it be our little secret. Can you do that?"

She enthusiastically nodded her head, which made me fear she might give herself a concussion, but as suddenly as she started with it, she stopped. Her expression shifted from happy to fearful in the blink of an eye.

"Does this mean you are gonna leave me behind?" she whimpered. I didn't immediately respond to her question, which she rightfully interpreted as a yes. It was sort of. The actual plan was to drop her off somewhere safe. "Please, take me with you. I don't wanna stay here. I will be good. I will do everything you say but please don't leave me here. I don't wanna be alone again."

I was about to respond, dozens of reasons to deny her request on the tip of my tongue, of why she couldn't come with me, that we had everything planned out. But then I saw her eyes, her whole expression that laid bare her fears and desperation.

And all those well-thought-out arguments died in my throat, never be voiced. The only thing on the forefront of my mind was - Screw it – I couldn't bring myself to ignore this cute little girl's desperate pleading. What kind of Hero, what kind of human would that make me? I just couldn't leave her alone.

A moment later, all three of us vanished into thin air.

Authors Note:
To answer the question, that might or might not pop up, how Sage was able to get up on the roof of the building at the beginning of the chapter if she is unable to interact with the world while in her Breaker state. She used the Fire-escape on the opposite side of the building from the PRT buildings perspective – no need to open doors or any other interaction with the world necessary.

Unfortunately, Worm canon doesn't answer the question of what happens to Case 53 Capes, when exposed to a power nullifier, for example, someone like Hatchet Face. (Here I mean those strongly mutated Case 53 like Weld or Garotte/Sveta, who don't seem able to survive without access to their powers.)
(It probably doesn't shut down)-Nags

There are essentially two scenarios of how I think it might work – one, they lose their power, and since the power is all that keeps their body from failing, they simply die. On one hand, it seems counterintuitive to a power suppression or stealing power to have such far-reaching consequences, given the shards' purpose is to gather information. On the other hand, Case 53's and their underlying mutation is something unnatural, something that shouldn't have happened during a normal cycle. Therefore I doubt there are protocols in place preventing the demise of monstrous capes without their powers.

Two, as I described in chapter 08 of this story, I think there is a high chance that non-permanent effects of suppressing or stealing powers leave the Shard still tethered to the Case 53, therefore, preventing their demise. Because even though they lose their power simply the connection is not severed completely.

As you have probably already noticed, I went with the second interpretation, if only to prevent unintended deaths at the hand of Sage. And in a sense, a concession to the plot as a whole ...

In regards to restoring `Sveta/Garotte´ body -
I'm of two minds on what Chronos power is capable of doing. I described it as a power that can influence the proper time of an object or person in both directions forward to the future and to the past. Allowing for some really interesting applications... but in case of it being used on a person, it would not only allow de-aging and return it to a previous condition. This is something usually desired if you are just intending to heal someone but would also have the adverse effect of erasing the memories the person accumulated in the time span he or she is reset to. Allowing for Taylor to erase memories... or in the case of `Sveta/Garotte´ to restore them to a time before Cauldron erased them. (effectively eliminating/killing her present personality with it)

Not really a huge problem IMO at least not in regards to what I have planned in doing with her – it makes no real difference for the story if she can be classified as `Sveta/Garotte´ or `fisher village girl´ but it makes a huge difference in other regards. Because this power is gonna play a major part in the future. (I'm sure some might be able to guess it correctly.) But for that to occur. The power either can't be allowed to change the memories of subjects it is used on, or it has to be up to the user to decide if memories are affected or not.
At the moment, I'm inclined to go with the version the user can decide – it won't break the setting but allows for some interesting uses, but not without drawbacks.

For example, Taylor(Sage) will be able to restore the memories of Case 53 by erasing the memories they gained since Cauldron let them free... making it a double-edged sword. What this power won't be able to do is remove powers. They are anchored to the DNA of the person, and if Taylor doesn't outright reduce them to a state before or after they had DNA the power (Shard) will stay with them. That, of course, doesn't mean she can't steal powers in other ways, just that this particular power can't be used to depower people.
