I wonder what lesbian mantises do.
I forgot I even had this quoted. But more importantly: kek
"That kinda power? Long-ranged attack, focused on a single blow, precise enough to slip past your tentacles… That's your bane, right there. If ya hadn't been straight more powerful, and hadn't had that opening of surprise, she might have hurt you bad. If ya met someone on your own level with that kinda ability? More dangerous than any big tough guy or Kido master, to ya personally."

"Oh yeah," Luppi said, eyes wide, "I'd be screwed. Can't say I know anyone who fits the bill, though."

"Hmm. Still, gotta watch your back."
CONCERN
"I mean," Luppi said, flopping over to his side, elbows planted on the mattress and his chin resting on his sleeves, "now you gotta tell me what you're gonna do about me taking out your ginger darling."
CONFUSED
"Say whatever you want," Luppi said with a cold smile, "I hear the music of your soul. You may be a fox, but I have you on a leash. You'll pay up. In time."
Now I'm interested to see how this plays out.

@Omicron Was Tesla expecting us to open the Garganta? Can't all hollows do that? Was he just waiting for us to snap out of the bluescreen and then we took the initiative?

That man deserves an XP bounty, see if he doesn't!

Tweaking Gin's nose by giving him precisely what he wants but can't actually have, but doing it in such an assholish way.

Just, magnificent.

Bluescreen? I'm not sure what moment of the fight you're referring to.
Tessai boss fight opening.
"Has the Quinta extracted the target?" he asks, deep basso voice rumbling like a forge's bellows. You nod quickly. "We need to leave, then. I don't think we can handle-"
Tesla shows up, says we need to leave.
Then you see his opponent.

He's a giant too, though a lesser one, human in his proportions - if only barely. Taut muscles ripple beneath his skin, pull his shirt tight around him. His hair is pulled back against his scalp, the front of it shaved and the back half pulled into a tight, thin braid, contrasting with his luxurious moustache. His thin glasses are covered in rain, and he awkwardly wipes them as he walks towards you.

The gesture is awkward because he is carrying an unconscious body on each shoulder: the white-clothed man and the dark-skinned giant.

Tsukashibi Tessai, former Captain of the Kido Corps of Soul Society. The man who almost captured you the last time you were on a living world mission. His power burns brighter than any of the flashes of lightning above; a whispering flame of colors not known to this world calls to you from within his souls, tempts you with promises of forbidden secrets.

"Orihime," Tessai says sharply. "Can you heal Uryuu and Chad?"

The long-haired girl looks up at him, eyes wide, surprised of his arrival.

"I-I can stabilize them, make sure they don't get worse, but I'm already at my limits…"

"That will be fine," he says, and lays down the bodies next to Tatsuki and Ururu.

You breathe again. You hadn't realized you had stopped.
Here's the bit where we just stared at the scary guy.
"Nemo," Tesla says, urgently, and you turn on your heels, slice apart the threads of reality to open the Garganta…
And then here's him saying our name and us opening the door.

Well, I didn't see that one coming. But in hindsight it makes complete sense from luppis perspective.

Oh, yeah.

Tesla actually meant "drop everything and run." While all Arrancars are able to open Gargantas, the ability to open it in a few seconds with a simple gesture is only universal to the Espada. Some Fraccions have it, some don't. Tesla probably doesn't, or he would have opened one himself, and he had no way of knowing if you had that ability as well. While he was concerned with Nemo's blanking out moment, he was waiting for the both of them to run, not an instant escape from Garganta, and he was just aware as she was that just immediately running off might have them roasted by an instant spell from Tessai. So he was caught in a moment of uncertainty, until Nemo's Bala gave him the opening to catch her and jump off.

"I'm waaay stronger than ya, and ya know it. But we're in my bedroom, where my extending sword ain't even useless but an actual liability. Ya got that instant gigai back in your pocket. Ya told me earlier how keen ya were to how my kinda power is your fatal weakness. And even earlier ya told me all musing-like how you should practice on disarming opponents. So I try my sneaky surprise extendo-stab, you flash-step out of the way and leave the gigai, my sword gets stuck in it or the wall past it for a split second, just time enough for you to be on me and rip it outta my hand. Then we're both fighting barehanded in a confined space, unreleased. My power don't matter then, 'cause we're playing to all your strengths, and I lose."

The bolded part sounds as if Gin also has a hollow form like Tousen had in Canon and as if that is something he is willing to share with Luppi. His Shikai would already be released in that scenario after all and Luppi being unreleased isn't really "playing to his strengths", meaning it can't just refer to that.

... Is it bad if my first thought was "That can't be an update, it's only 2.8K words"?

And if the Mangaverse ever got to see that scene, I swear someone will make an R-rated doujin regarding Luppi's "plans" for the gigai.

I am just quoting this to clarify that my Like is for the first part, not the sexdoll doujin thingy.:p

Or he's just referring to his Bankai, or to the fact that if his Shikai is out of his hands he's not really "released" :V

Soul Society's perception of "Hollow armies" is similar to the pop culture perception of "Roman Legions against barbarian hordes." The disciplined ranks of the Gotei 13 march with discipline and order, while the individually powerful and reckless Hollows charge forth in a teeming, chaotic mass, which can be broken by holding steadfast with discipline and courage.

Teamwork, tactics and disciplines, are not expected from them. Similarly, this doctrinal vision of Soul Society by itself ignores how much its martial culture goes against official dogma by incentivizing glory-seeking and honor duels.

One thing Soul Society isn't great at is resolving its competing internal cultural drives and grasping the actual nature and scope of outside threats. Whoever might have survived the Coming of the King likely spoke at length in debriefings about the nature of Hollow tactics, but five centuries have eroded that understanding, because nothing like Barragan ever came again.

To be fair to them, they really have no context for the Las Noches faction. The Arrancar are slowly becoming more and more human (no thanks to Aizen), faster than they anticipated.

They were expecting Hollows with swords, and maybe a rudimentary understanding of tactics. Feral. Primal. Cruel creatures, out to hurt.

They were not prepared for the Power of Friendship.

loved that interlude!
Luppi is all too often skipped, but not only did you include him, you gave him a unique, memorable personality and character we recognize, and love!
And his interactions with Gin-from the start as Gin picked him, to their stories to this-all great joy to read!

Honestly that would be an amazing scene for the Mangaverse. Showing a little of the internal politics of the arrancar army just after the arc that showed them to be a serious threat. I really hope someone decides to make a manga breakdown about it.

Well, that was a thing. Very similar characters they are, scheming backstabbers whose weakness is that they let themselves get attached to people.

How many XP is that omake worth, you think? :V

Nah, Gin is pretty much off limits until the dramatic reveal of his mission of revenge.
They were vague enough that it would only generate a bunch of conflicting theories. Hell, if the only thing you knew about Gin's motivations was this conversation you could be forgiven to think that he has a grudge against Soul Society. That's how vague they were.

...All hail Luppi, he figured out the way to do what we wanted.
I'm not sure if I'll do another omake for this quest, but if I do, I intend to grant at least another one to Luppi.

"I already told you. Don't remember? Second time Ginger gets maimed. And there isn't gonna be a month-long lull for her to get better, and people with higher priority got hurt, like her Captain. She's probably not gonna be part of the war at all, just recovering in some infirmary deep in Soul Society. Alive. I saved her life - saved her life from any other Arrancar who might have actually killed her in battle."
Yeah, someone is completely ignorant of the utter bullshit that Mayuri, Unohana and the shinigami medical establishment is capable of.
