What could go wrong?

CH 0. Awakening.
Location
Midwest
Roots spring from you and you are hoisted up to the sky to become a tree.

You scream out to the powerful to do something but they simply shake their heads.

You sink beneath into the ground into a dark cave.

Every muscle of your body is restrained, you cannot breathe and yet you do not die.

You created a body above that of The World and elevated yourself into an empty void.

Everyone you climbed over to get there is gone now.

You are alone.

---

You wake up from the nightmare. Your heart races though you aren't sure why. It was unpleasant but obviously so surreal that it could never possibly happen to you. You definitely did not find yourself alone upon arriving at the Shin'o Academy for the orientation. You met many people yesterday including your current bunk-mate who has awoken to your startled gasp:

[] "Sosuke, are you alright?" Tousen Kaname asks quietly not sure if you are actually awake. The reclusive man, already the subject of much gossip for his distinctive appearance, is apparently quite the morning bird.
You are AIZEN SOSUKE. You are a BOY.

[] Yadomaru Lisa lets out an annoyed groan. As she has mentioned to you yesterday, she does not enjoy waking up early in the morning.
You are AIZEN KOHAKU. You are a GIRL.
-[] Write in if you have a better given name.
---

You do not respond. Mostly because you are still tired, despite the sudden shock. The room is no longer pitch black but the sun is not yet cracking through the curtains either. There is still time to go back to sleep and you are not going to waste it. As you wait for your consciousness to drift away you think about how the first day of class awaits and though you consider yourself too dignified and collected to be giddy with anticipation there are some things you're looking forward to.

Choose two:
[] Receiving your Zanpakuto. The concept of a blade forming a spirit of its own from your core being fascinates you. The prestige of being able to achieve Shikai first, a fierce competition among every academy class, is equally enticing.

[] There are some interesting individuals in your class. Three stand out and you want to speak to one of them later. (You may make your two choices in this category)
-[] Tosen Kaname stands out for multiple reasons. The most noteworthy of course being the zanpakuto he already possesses.
-[] Shiba Isshin is rather loud for a noble. His attempts at currying favor with the females of your class were uncouth as well. Nonetheless he seems quite affable.
-[] Yadomaru Lisa mentioned she had prior martial arts experience. This was unnecessary as she had already demonstrated her prodigal talents on Isshin after some unsolicited flirting with a masterful roundhouse kick.

[] History class. Though not as exciting as swinging a sword or shooting a magic fireball you have many questions about the nature of soul society and why it is the way it is.

AN: Welcome to my first quest somewhat inspired by a shit post made in Omnicron's wonderfully written Number None. The year is Bunsei 2 or 1820 CE. Europe is about to enjoy an unprecedented half century of releative peace. The rest of the world is about to undergo two centuries bloodshed as part of the next phase of colonialism. Relations between sShinigami and Quincy are already strained and will be put to the test. More importantly though, Aizen has just enrolled in Shin'o academy. Will they become a smug prick with a heart of gold or simply a smug sociopath? That is up to you denizens of SV!

To absolutely no ones surprise this quest will be using a variant of the system seen in Number None and We Stand in Awe by @Omicron and @Maugan Ra . No bleach quest is complete without healthy (or unhealthy) debate about how to raise your ghost power level. Our protagonist has a core set of skills, the four shinigami combat arts, their ability to use their released zanpakuto, and the ability to manipulate Reiatsu, which have ranks associated with their overall level of ability. Rank is increased by spending XP which is gained at the end of story arcs, if someone writes an omake, or if art is produced (and god bless you if you decide to do that). In addition you can get 10XP for suggesting a kido spell to add to the list of numbered hado and bakudo (Maximum of 50xp per person per arc tho)

XP from plot progression is allocated based on a vote at the end of a story arc while omake/art creators get to decide where their xp goes.

  • Untrained: You have no ability with the skill. However you are willing and quite ready to learn
  • Student (100XP): You have begun to master the basics but the finer points elude you. The instructors at the academy expect this level of competency/talent in most fields before letting one graduate.
  • Competent (200XP): You can exercise this skill even while under strain. Junior seated officers average around this level.
  • Adept (400XP): You perform at a level that takes normal people years to achieve. Exercising this skill can be done without little thought. The average for a senior seated officer
  • Distinguished(800XP): You begin to enter a level of skill that is noteworthy. Here ones personal style may make itself evident. Senior Seated officers have at least one skill of this rank.
    • To progress beyond this requires a Shikai rank of at least Adept.
  • Expert (1600XP): You are reaching the zenith of what normal people achieve in a life time. Third seats and lieutenants at minimum have one skill in this rank.
  • Elite (2400XP): To master a skill to this level is to push yourself to the limits of normal ability. Experienced Lieutenants average around here.
    • To progress beyond this requires a Bankai rank of Adept. It is here the true worth of the bond between Shinigami and sword reveals itself.
  • Master (3200XP): Your proficiency is something for the history books. Breaking new ground for what can be done with this skill is not beyond your grasp. The best of the lieutenants have a skill here and captains multiple.
  • Champion (5400XP): Those who can compare with you in this skill can be counted on one hand. A seasoned captains area of expertise is usually in this rank.
  • Legendary (N/A): There is but one summit. To possess talent of this level is to stand above all else in creation and to obtain it you must best the person already at this level. Your name will be spoken of throughout the ages.
Additionally you may spend XP at the end of an arc on a Technique. Techniques have a far narrower scope than skills. They are a specific tactic/move your character has developed. This can range from Isshin's incredibly powerful finger flick to Hacchi in-canting a kido spell after he casts it to something more elaborate like Yoruichi's Shunko. They cost from 100 to 300XP depending on initial complexity. Possible techniques will be revealed as the story progresses as well as be included from reader suggestions(expect a lot of scrutiny from me though).

Kido:

Each in the kido skill increases the total number of spells you're able to cast. Each time you rank up spells of the previously acquired ranks will no longer require an incantation to cast.

[] "Sosuke, are you alright?" Tousen Kaname asks quietly not sure if you are actually awake.

[] Receiving your Zanpakuto.
[] History class.

"Aizen-san, How are you feeling," Tosen Kaname asks. The man has a soft voice contrary to his physical figure. While not particularly tall, when he arrived at the academy in a short sleeve shirt you could tell just by looking at his arms that the man had undergone quite the physical regime.

Though to be fair you had not seen any obese people with spiritual power so perhaps it was not that exceptional.

"I'm fine. Other than that bizarre.... Thing last night I rested quite well," You reply. "You seem a lot more talkative than yesterday,"

"I felt out of my element. I've only talked to nobles twice in my life before," Kaname's posture shifts slightly with the last part. You've clearly brought up bad memories. "I did not expect the third time to involve an invitation to wrestle,"

Shiba Isshin did make quite the impression on the class with his antics. He was quite eager to engage in contests of physical might with the males of the class. The man seemed to possesses a child like joy for the practice of martial arts. Less childlike however was his conduct towards the classmates of the opposite sex. His invitations for private kido lessons with Yadomaru-san had resulted in her displaying her own affinity with the martial arts and some laughter from you and your classmates. Of course, some of the other nobles did not seem happy to see this, but that probably wasn't your problem.

"I'm daunted too at the idea of trying to find my place among the dozens of our peers," You did not expect yourself to open up so quickly but there seems to be a tacit understanding between you and Kaname. You find each others natures agreeable. However whether this is to result in a lasting friendship is yet to be seen.

"Hopefully that will be our greatest challenge at this academy," Kaname replies as you make your way into the main dojo.

---

The entirety of your class and the rest of the student seems to have arrived now. What must be over a hundred students are surrounding a rack of katanas but maintaining a respectable distance from it's guardian: Gengoro Onabara. You can't help but feel drawn to the rack yourself. Kaname, obviously, does not share the same compulsion but follows you as you migrate into the crowd.
"Everyone seems to be here. And anyone who isn't will be rewarded with some early shunpo lessons," Onabara Gengoro has a gruff voice to match his appearance. His rugged jawline, bald head, and broad shoulders suggest a storied career in the 13 Court Guard Divisions. "Some of you may already know me from the orientation. I am Onabara Gengoro the instructor of class one. You have already been deemed qualified for military service on the behalf of all of Soul Society. Here we will determine whether you are suitable for the Gotei 13." He goes on explaining that those who could not bond with an asauchi would still be able to pursue meaningful careers in other branches such as the patrol corps. The bulk of his lecture, however, is on safety which border from the obvious rules, such as not sparring unsupervised, to egregious incidents of recklessness such as the student who tried using his zanpakuto as a cutting implement to open a parcel and lost a toe. Kaname cringes at that and you don't think it's out of sympathy for the student.

---

"Oh no!" Watanabe Sei exclaims as her asauchi shrank down into a wakazashi. The assurances from Onabara that a zanpakuto's size in its sealed form did not have much to do with it's strength will not save the poor noblewoman from teasing over the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile Shiba Isshin examines the tassel that had spouted on the end of his Zanpakuto's hilt.

"You scored high on the reiryoku exams, Sosuke-san. Let's see what your zanpakuto looks like!" Tsunayashiro Kimiya prods you. The noble struck up a conversation with you yesterday regarding your background and talent with spiritual energy but you still doubt he would be pleased if you referred to him by his given name too. You elect to just smile and nod as you reach for an asauchi on the rack. You pull the asauchi from the rack and in a flash of violet the handle turns green. It's a small transformation and a similar reaction to most of your peers. Other than that nothing interesting happens

In your inner world, one of two things happens:

[] By a riverside gondola under an eternal night sky, a courtesan giggles. It'll be a while yet before the game begins in full but you two are bound to assemble quite the hand.

[] An oarsmen sets off on his raft. These waters seem to have no end but this journey must be taken.

Students continue to remove asauchis from the rack. Whether or not they transform seems down to pure chance. There are even a few members of Class I glaring at their generic blades. Meanwhile you and kaname watch the proceedings and make small talk with some of your classmates regarding the more interesting zanpakutos. Baseless speculation of what your shikais could do ensues mostly informed by childhood dreams.

Personally you desire:
[]A straightforward Melee type release. You think having some sort of special ability would distract from the skills you wish to hone and display here.
[]A kido type. The assortment of abilities that have been observed by zanpakutos of these type defy easy categorization. Most of all you're curious what type something based off your soul would produce.
[]An elemental type. Zanpakutos that control the elements are known to be among the strongest. Though really you just enjoy the mystique associated with a warrior who can call down tidal waves or lightning on their foes.

Tsunayashiro Kimiya is in a seperate group flanked by students he has appointed as his "retainers" and talks with other nobles. Isshin Shiba is also near in a seperate group talking with the unfortunate Watanabe Sei and others. Yadomaru Lisa orbits that group but you've noticed she is quite fine with keeping quiet in the background.

"Hey, you and Tosen both have accessories on your hilts," Sei remarks. You turn and see Isshin Shiba staring at Kaname's sword. He keenly regards it as he strolls up to him. Despite being close to you two in age, he seems to have gotten his growth spurts out of the way early and even with the academy uniform hiding his anatomy you can tell that he has not lived a nobles life of leisure. You're not sure how much of this kaname can discern, what with his lack of vision, but nonetheless Kaname is clearly discomforted. Kaname's relaxed posture tightens up.

"Yeah... I wonder if that's a sign. Perhaps we're kindred spirits fated to form a manly bond during our school years?" Isshin asks. You find this a bold topic for someone to broach to a person they've never spoken to before.

Kaname chokes on his words. You knew he possessed a shy side but you sense a bit of conflict. "I... Perhaps we could be friends.... Shiba-sama," Kaname replies, cautiously pronouncing the honorific. He begins to clench his fist. At this moment you remember you have yet to actually learn much about Kaname and feel slightly alarmed.

Isshin is unwittingly trampling over some sort of baggage Kaname Tosen carry's. Your course of action:

[] Step in. "Please go easier on Tosen-san. Being from the rukongai he's not used to interacting with someone of such a high station. Perhaps it would be better to get acquainted later outside of class hours,"

[]Approach Tsunayashiro Kimiya. You've conversed briefly yesterday with him. He has a strict view on etiquette and conduct between nobles and their.... lessers but you've established enough of a rapport you can approach him. Though you aren't entirely sure what he'll do.
May result in consequences.

[]Lisa Yadomaru has a similar disposition to you, ignoring her temper. You know for a fact she'll put him in his place, hopefully in a less physical manner.

[]Let it play out. It's not exactly a crisis yet.
-[] Isshin Shiba seems the sort of man to make amends for any pain he'd inflict in the end. Even if they don't end up friends, connections with one of the great houses will be a net positive for Kaname in the long run.
-[]you neither detest isshin shiba nor feel compassion for him. you simply think he is someone potentially useful to keep an eye on Huh what was that.

[] Write-in.

AN: Both of the zanpakuto votes are primarily about characterization. None of those options will preclude you from getting Kyoka Suigetsu once the vote on what your zanpakuto powers is comes up(Though if you make this Aizen have more of a righteous heart the nature of the illusions may reflect that).

CH 1-2. First Day 2/Making Friends?
[X] By a riverside gondola under an eternal night sky, a courtesan giggles. It'll be a while yet before the game begins in full but you two are bound to assemble quite the hand.

[X]A kido type. The assortment of abilities that have been observed by zanpakutos of these type defy easy categorization. Most of all you're curious what type something based off your soul would produce.

[X] Step in. "Please go easier on Tosen-san. Being from the rukongai he's not used to interacting with someone of such a high station. Perhaps it would be better to get acquainted later outside of class hours,"

You don't know what happened to Kaname but it seems like he has a wound that still hasn't healed. You interrupt Kaname.

"Please go easier on Tosen-san. Being from the Rukongai he's not used to interacting with someone of such a high station. Perhaps it would be better to get acquainted later outside of class hours," You offer in a gentle voice. Helping with your families business has taught you a bit about persuasion. Isshin seems to immediately understand.

"Perhaps you shouldn't be talking to commoners without restraint either," Tsunayashiro Kimiya adds before Isshin can reply. Isshin turns to glare at him and you and Kaname step back. Kaname further. Ah, this was not according to your plan.

"Sorry, the Shiba clan neglected to teach me the importance of trampling over the downtrodden to pump my own ego up," Isshin says. Kimiya grins, but in his green eyes you can see a twinge of frustration.

"Perhaps that neglect is why your clan is not fit to reside in Seireitei and have to stay amongst the gutter trash," Kimiya retorts. Isshin is not fazed by this but pauses to consider a response. Other conversations nearby die down as students turn to watch the commotion.

"In that case, what does it say about you that you've been placed in the same class with us mongrels?" Yadomaru Lisa quips.

"Watch your tongue, harlot!" One of the students at Kimiya's side shouts. Lisa responds with the finger.

"Enough," Onabara Genjoro's voice rings out before he can reply. "If any of you want to go at it, you can wait until I've taught you enough to spar. Otherwise unless you want to see what the captain-commander has permitted me to do to break up fights, then simmer down." Onabara stares directly at Isshin and Kimiya while cracking his fists. "You may have duties to your family but you've also sworn an oath to protect the harmony of all of Soul Society and that includes this class." Kimiya bats one last glare at Isshin before walking away with his group. Kaname has regained his composure. Something seems on his mind.

Onabara then has you form into groups and practice the basic sword techniques with wooden blades. Incidentally, he mentions this is one of the few times all classes will be practicing together. You notice that he takes Lisa and Kaname aside to practice parrying.

Swinging the sword is easy but doing it in concert while stepping forward takes some getting use to, but, before the class is dismissed, you think you've gotten the feel down. Gain 10 XP for zanjutsu.

---

You were hoping for a full history of Soul Society but it does make sense that you'd only be taught the history of the 13 Court Guard Divisions. However that tale itself left much to be desired. It's more a recitation of events than an actual story. In response to conflict between the great houses and insurgent clans, the Soul King ordered Yamamoto Genryusai Shigekuni to assemble the greatest warriors of soul society to bring peace to the land. Why the conflict started is not mentioned either. Your father was not the wealthiest of merchants but he could afford a tutor to tell you that much. The specific details are more interesting: The first military campaign of the Gotei 13 was one of the two times Yamamoto Shigekuni used his bankai. He left a swathe of destruction in his wake so great the scars only had just finished disappearing from the lands by the time the quincy king came, one thousand years later.

Really if you think about it, with such prodigal strength, does the rest of Soul Society's military matter all that much. The monk Hyosube Ichibe has some impressive feats attributed to him but you're not actually sure if he's real or not. Perhaps Yachiru Kenpanchi, the first captain of the 11th and holder of the title "strongest shinigami", might be a contender but all you know of her is that she was a master of a thousand styles. You find your thoughts drifting away from the lecture as you think about the myths of the founding captains. As a child you've found it easy to withdraw into your thoughts and that has persisted into your adolescence.

Then it's night time and you find yourself outside by the river. Opposite you, a woman in a yukata, it is too dark to make out fine details, raises an eyebrow at you before smirking.

You are back in the lecture hall. You flinch. Gathering yourself you quickly look around the room to see if anyone noticed you. As far as you can tell everyone is looking dead ahead though you're not the only one letting their mind slip. Lisa, a few seats over, is leaning back in her chair and covertly focused on looking out the windows. Kimiya is not even trying to mask the scowl on his face.

Onabara finishes up with a brief overview of the recent developments in mod souls. He then releases the class for lunch.

---

Hoho class leaves you tired and sore but you mostly relish the feeling. Though you are simply running laps with the use of spiritual energy, many of your classmates find some difficulty in the concept especially Watanabe Sei. You find yourself constantly overtaking her. Though it's not a race, Isshin and Kimiya seem to be vying for the lead. Isshin stumbles and loses some speed falling behind you. He sprints to catch up but slows down alongside you.
"Hey Sosuke," You're not sure how he's getting words out with how much sweat is rolling down his brow. "Remember what we were talking about this morning?". You really hope he doesn't mean the argument with Kimiya. "That Tsunayashiro guy's kind of a prick right?"

Your heart lurches. You really don't think it's good for you to be involved in this. You begin to consider all the angles and craft a diplomatic reply.

"Nah, I'm just kidding. The other thing you said, you want to hang out after class?" He grins. You son of a bitch. "I know a bar that doesn't kick out academy students. It's a few blocks down by the 11th division barracks," He adds. Well, that's interesting.

"Have you invited anyone else?" You ask.

"Well I figured you might bring along Tosen-sama," Wait why does he get the honorific? Just because of the zanpakuto?? "I might ask Sei, but she'd probably say something about impropriety when really she's just afraid of getting caught. Maybe Yoichi and his brother."

"And Yadomaru-Chan?"

"If you want to broach it, yeah. I think she'd just assume the worst from me..."

"Is it really okay for us to share wine-"

"Beer, we'll be drinking beer. You're a man aren't you?"

"Is it okay to drink beer with a man of your standing without any... pretenses?" You realize you were never educated on how to actually initiate a conversation with a noble. You only knew the rules for responding to their queries.

"Yeah, Kimiya is acting otherwise but if he wanted to make you all grovel before him or what not then he shouldn't have joined the military. There's an entirely different set of rules here." Isshin picks up the pace. "Anyways I gotta go beat this punk. Let me know what you think, later!"

Isshin raises a fair point but you do wonder what the members of Kimiya's entourage would think.

---

The school day comes to an end and you mull over your options for free time. Choose two (sub options are free).

[] You talk to Kaname about communing with a Zanpakuto and his experiences with the blade.
-[](Optional) And ask him about what happened that morning.
[] You were going out for dinner anyways as the food served at the academy isn't that good. There you meet Yadomaru Lisa and have a nice chat about yourselves.
[] You decide to take Isshin up off on his offer.
-[](Optional) And then get really drunk and gain some valuable experience... regarding hand to hand combat.

AN: So I took a look at Can't Fear Your Own World the official light novel and it turns out my head-canon regarding pre-series chronology was a little bit off. Apologies to anyone this has bothered(As a turbo-pedant I know I would be). I think the changes in timeline do end up justifying Kaname's characterization a bit more.

Thanks for the attention this is getting and feel free to leave feedback on what you'd like to see or already saw and hated.

CH 1-3 Getting to Know Tosen Kaname
After the school day, you head out to a local ramen stand for dinner. You think filling up will help with the alcohol though you don't really know much about drinking. On the way back you see Kaname surrounded by five of your peers.

"So, Kaname when do you think you'll learn the name of your zanpakuto?" Hideyo asks.

"Sooner than you'd think but later than you would hope, presumably" Kaname answers.

"I bet Sei-chan will get there first since her blades the smallest!" Yoichi chimes in.

"That's not how it works!" Sei pleads as the group laughs at her.

"I believe, out of the rest of you, it will be Aizen-san, or perhaps... Shiba-san," Kaname continues gesturing across the way to you.

"Why do you figure that?" Hideyo furrows his brow.

"Getting in touch with the inner spirit of a zanpakuto requires introspection. Those two have a certain sense of direction,"

"Well I guess Shiba-sama certainly has force of will, not that I'm sure that's the same thing..."

"He's impulsive but I think there's a method to his madness,"

"He does take surprisingly well to jinzen..."

Kaname continues in a more serious voice. "There is another thing."

"What is it?" Sei asks.

"Or more it's he lacks something,"

"What?"

"He does not have... an insecurity about the size of his sword,"

They do not react for a moment. Then the dams break and they laugh as Sei lets out a frustrated groan. You find yourself smiling.

---

You walk back to your room. Besides you and Kaname, no one else seems to be present.

"Aizen-San, Is there something you'd like to talk about?" Kaname asks as you sit down on his bunk bed. You gesture for him to come closer but before you can realize how stupid that is he leans in.

"Yes, I'm going out drinks with Shiba-sama, I don't think you'd want to come but Shiba-sama would not mind," You whisper.

"I appreciate the offer but I've never had any experience with such things," Kaname responds quietly. "I'll make sure our roommates provide an alibi for you if need be. Was there something else?"

"There is but I don't want to bother you with a question you've been hounded with all day,"

"Ah, of course. Unless you have a tumultuous spirit, your zanpakuto should give you it's name as soon as you are strong enough. In your case, that should be rather soon,". You swear you hear distant feminine giggling in response to that statement.

"I'm nowhere near as strong as you or Yadomaru-san. I don't think I'd compare to even the three nobles in our class as they know at least a little kido." Kaname chuckles at that.

"Your spiritual presence is far more subdued than theirs. Developing a grasp on any of the four combat arts would easily make you my equal,"

"I envy your level of humility." Honestly you do wish you had something to brag about at this point, besides the fact you keep catching in the corner of your eye Sei looking at you.

"Would you like me to teach you something"

"About being humble?" You joke.

"Look at this," Kaname kneels and, in a single motion, stands up, steps forward, draws his sword, and slashes the air in front of him. Your eyes detail the arc the blade takes but you don't think your body would be fast enough to defend it from you. "This was the move I had to master to survive in Rukongai," Kaname sheathes the sword again and repeats the technique this time from a standing position. "Because of my appearance and disability, I was constantly preyed on by the common brigand." He sheathes it again. "You can see that it's a potent offense, but when used as a counter-attack it becomes a means to respond to unjust aggression."

He sits down again and Kaname continues. "There was a time when I saw something beheld something beyond the pale but I was completely powerless. I was filled with a blood boiling fury but.... I did not want to become reliant on mere brute force to right the world. Figuring that out and this technique was the path by which I came in touch with my zanpakuto,"

"Have you already obtained..."

"No, not yet but I have learned something else. Maybe I'll show you some other time... Anyways your spiritual aura is very tranquil. I think you will prove to be a great shinigami one day..."

"Thank you, Kaname. Could I inconvience you further and ask for some pointers on zanjutsu?"

"That would not be a problem..."

---

Tosen give you a few helpful bits of advice on your swordmanship. You can tell he has a real talent that's only magnified by the connection he's made with his zanpakuto. In the end, you leave the room thinking that Kaname Tousen is

[] A man of surprising clarity and strength. You have much you can learn from him.

[] Someone you will enjoy talking to in the future. Perhaps even a dear friend.

[] Powerful. If you are to stand out, you must strive to escape from under his shadow.

20XP gained for Zanjutsu. The Technique Iajutsu is now available to spend XP on(see mechanics & character sheet post).

CH 1-4 Drinks With Friends
You and the group set out before the sun sets. With you are: Shiba Isshin , Yadomaru Lisa, Watanabe Sei, and someone who you have not spoken to much yet: Fujiwara Yoichi, a man a bit younger than you with black curly hair.

"Are you sure it's going to be safe with all those eleventh division guys?" Watanabe Sei asks as she walks along Isshin. The noble stands only a head taller than Lisa and has only a single ponytail as opposed to Lisa's pigtails. Honestly you're shocked that the academy doesn't actually enforce a curfew. As long as you attend class, avoid public drunkenness(Though alcohol is de jure forbidden in general), and keep your zanpakuto back on campus, you can make as many trips like this you want.

"I'm more concerned about you passing out in that jacket," Lisa responded. You had all switched out your academy hakamas for more comfortable kimonos but Sei had brought an overcoat.

"I'm telling you... It might rain tonight," Sei answered.

"Didn't you say it would?" Yoichi asked.

"If it does rain we can just Isshin as an umbrella anyways," Lisa states matter of fact. You don't know if she's joking but, from what you saw of her in zanjutsu class, she's probably got some serious upper body strength.

"Wait then how am I going to stay dry...?" Isshin asks.

---

The tavern is crowded with a mix of off duty shinigami (Who Sei eyes nervously), still clad in their uniforms, and what you assume are tradesmen. Your tutor had taught you that sereitei was populated exclusively by nobles and military members but as you learned the basics of your fathers business you wondered how the local economy would work with such demographics.

"Who are they?" You ask as you sit down at the table. The waittress sits you near the end of the room. Sei choses to share one side of the table with you while the other three get their own.

"Probably some noble's retainers. They don't like to leave sereitei so they hire up people to provide the services they need, like craftsmen and construction workers." Isshin answers with his brow just a little furrowed. "We Shibas are more independent though."

"So Aizen-san, where are you from?" Sei eagerly cuts in. Huh, you thought you'd be second to last for that sort of thing. Lisa and Isshin seemed a lot more interesting in comparison.

"Oh, I'm from Aomizumi in the south. What about you Yadomaru-san?" You take a sip of your drink and suppress a grimace.

"But what does your family do?" Sei asks without missing a beat.

"Oh, My father's a merchant. He ships things up and down the Mu river. It's rather boring I'd say."

"Have you ever been on a boat?" Sei's interest slightly perturbs you. Then again most of Soul Society is land so you can see how that'd be novel.

"A few times, my father wanted me to see what the business was built on. It's mostly just tying knots and back breaking labor."

"Is that how you got so strong?" At this point you realize you've nearly finished your drink.

"Well my physical condition improved I'm not so sure about my Reiatsu though..."

Lisa chuckles. "If that were the case then it'd be the farmers and miners who produce most of our captains instead of lumbering oafs like Isshin." You nearly choke on your drink from laughter and shock.

"I don't know where you got lumbering from. You all saw me on the track today! I was like a tiger!"

"I think compared to Yadomaru-san anyone would look lumbering," Yoichi quips.

You decide to join in. "I'd still say that Isshin is rather brutish in his mannerisms,"

Isshin lets out a groan as the rest of the table chuckles. "Aizen-sama, can't you see they are just envy of my primal grace? Don't let them decieve you!"

"Why have you decided to call me -sama?" you ask. "It's not just because of the glasses is it?"

"Well uh..."

"In that case, I will continue to ally myself with them."

"Noo!"

---

Maybe you should have asked Isshin to stop calling over the waitress for more drinks and maybe you should have stopped drinking them but you felt like following the pace of your peers. You felt lightheaded and Sei kept swaying and bumping into you.

"Sho!...Sho!....Sho!" Isshin slurs as he bounced his glass in the air with the first hado spell. Yoichi is clapping in rhythm and Lisa stares in rapt contemplation while also struggling to keep her eyes open.

"Isshin... Maybe you should... slow it down?" You suggest. The Kido is impressive but his timing is getting a bit slippery.

Isshin pauses for a moment to contemplate your words then remembers the glass is in the air. "Oh sh- Sho!" He shouts again but this time the spell misfires. Instead of a perfect orb of spiritual power expanding from his palm, the spell is a mishappen lump and launches the glass on a ballistic trajectory over your head and - hey wait when did you start being able to see the actual spell???

You've begun to see with more than your eyes. Well done Ou-sama!

Hu- The glass shatters behind you and a man cries out. You stand around, stumbling as you get out of your chair, and turn to see a shinigami, a stocky man with bright red hair, clutching the back of his head as it bleeds profusely. Oh fuck. The shinigami stands up and turns to face you.

"OI- What the fuck! Who did this!" He screams at you causing his pompadour to bob and shake. His two companions walk up beside him and Sei grabs onto your arm. Your heart pounds. At this point the bar has gone silent and its compatriots, now solely shinigami, are staring at you.

Isshin waddles around the table to your side. "I did... I'm sorry." Wow his speech cleared up really quickly.

"Fuck your sorry! This hurts!"

The shinigami to the left, a bald man sporting a thin goatee, shouts "What the hell were you guys doing?" Sei begins to tug on your arm in an attempt to pull you away.

"I was doing a trick for my friends and got careless. I humbly apologize." Isshin bows.

"Are you making fun of me?" The red head shinigami yells.

The barkeep intercedes. "Take it outside or you're both gonna get banned!"

Isshin walks forward, fishing in his coin-bag, and approaches the shinigami. "Let me make this right and pay for your medical treatment."

"Pay for what? Fourth division doesn't charge people, asshole!" The red head shinigami curls his fist in rage and throws a raging hay-maker. It strikes Isshin straight in the jaw. Isshin falls backwards and you clumsily try and catch him, your limbs moving like they're made of lead, and only succeed in softening his fall. "Stupid richboy!"

Sei gasps loudly. Yoichi stands up and Lisa takes a stance.

[]You cannot abide this! Your face burns with rage and so does your reiatsu. This is exactly what Kaname was thinking about.
-[] Reciprocate and throw a punch of your own.
-[] Charge the Shinigami and tackle him to the ground.
-[] Be responsible and go outside first.
-[] Feint kneeling down to examine isshin so you can grab your own drink and smash it in that shinigami's face.

[]You must calm this situation down. (You may want Aizen to do more than one of these but which one do you want him to do first?)
-[] Get Sei to help you pull Isshin away (and hold him back if need be). Announce that you're leaving.
-[] Get between Isshin and the Shinigami and try to de-escalate by stalling.
-[] Ask Lisa to take Sei home. You don't know how she'd react if things got worse.

[] Write in. Remember all parties involved are drunk as fuck.

CH 1-5 Diplomacy
Isshin squirms as he tries to get up but keeps stumbling over.

You shake your arm and wiggle out of Sei's grasp. You need to put a lid on this before anyone else gets hurt. You step over Isshin with your hands held up towards the shinigami's.

"Gentlemen, I believe we can.... all come to an.... understanding," You find it hard to get the words out. With how smooth your voice is though you really doubt it makes a difference. Perhaps you should become a singer.

"How?!" Mr.Redhead asks.

"We could..." you pause but smile to show confidence. "...Get more drunk?". They continue to stare at you. Hmm. "You should... go home and... get that taken care of." The shinigami glares and then looks at the fumbling Isshin with disgust. You lean over to help Isshin up.

"Yeah, you punks aren't worth it," The shinigami admits. He and his friends turn away from you. Isshin, leaning on your shoulder, opens his mouth to say something but something catches on his throat.

He then retches and vomits on the back of the shinigami's uniform.

Damn it.

"What the hell-" The shinigami turns to you as he feels the back of his robes. His eyes widen in rage. At this point you realize a threshhold has been crossed. You do what any reasonable person in your situation would.

"What-" Is all the shinigami gets out before you shove Isshin into him.

"Run!" You shout as you push Sei to the side. Isshin wraps his arms around the shinigami and grunts.

"Shiba-Slam!" He triumphantly roars as he leans backwards and suplexes the shinigami. You dive to the side knocking Sei over in the process. The rest of the bar cheers as the shinigami goes right through your table.

You yourself land on her and fumble trying to get off as quickly only to realize your fine motor control is not what it was the start of the evening. Sei makes a sound you don't quite catch amidst all the commotion.

As Sei gently pushes you off her, you roll over something hard. You pay it no mind as you behold the shinigami's two compatriots, the bald one and the one with the mohawk, tackle isshin to the ground on top of their pompadour'd ally. They wrestle amongst the wooden fragements and vomit.

Lisa runs up and jump kicks the bald shinigami in the face sending him rolling. Yoichi staggers in and throws himself at the other shinigami.

Isshin begins shouting "Seppa!" repeatedly and sand, you're not sure from where, is tossed around. The ground is soft, though not as soft as Sei, and you're tired. You decide it might be best to conserve your strength before getting back in the fold...

---

You dream of the gondola again. A woman brushes your hair as you rest your head on her lap.

"Do not fret. There is always next time."

---

You awaken to rough shaking. You roll over onto your back and open your eyes though all you can see is blurs. Incidentally your skull feels like there's a horse inside trying to stomp its way free.

"Get up," the harsh words of Onabara Gengoro send a chill down your spine. What is he doing here? What are you doing here? Where are you? Thinking about this makes your head hurt more.

"First time?" You groan in the affirmative and he chuckles. "Yeah that's what I figured. It's the same with the rest of your group, funny enough." Huh, and Isshin seemed so confident on the way over there. Then you remember the fight and your body goes stiff as you realize your situation.

"Onabara-sama, I-"

"Calm down," His voice softens and his scowl disappears. "I'd say I was furious but you're not exactly the first students to get in this situation, though doing it on the first day is certainly novel." Your vision focuses and you see the furnishings of an infirmary around you. You look at Onabara and he's grinning slightly. "You're a promising student with lots of potential so I'm not going to punish you." In gratitude, you bow and your glasses fall off. "In fact, you're so promising you're going to start getting up before dawn for shunpo practice with some upperclass students."

"Forgive me sensei, but I do not actually know how to perform shunpo...."

"No worries, I'll make sure the grind they essentials into you." What an odd turn of phr-

Oh.

"After two months with them, you'll be the best in the class at it. I'm sure."

Oh dear.

"And later, I'm going to personally give you some pointers on hand to hand combat."

Shit.

[X] Plan Speeding to Shikai

Shikai is now Student!
Hoho is now Student!

Surplus 21xp was put into zanjustu as only one person specified what was to be done with it. Zanjustu is now halfway to Student!

"Well done, Aizen-san! You've managed to increase your max distance to one and a half times your body span!" Yamada Seinosuke pats you on the back.

You pant and limp back to the start of the course. For the past hour you've been practicing the delicate art of the flash step at the long jump runway. Your goal is to launch yourself forward, as track and field athletes would, only with minimal use of your actual muscles. Instead you draw from your reserves of spiritual energy and vent it out from your body in as tight a beam as possible to propel yourself forward. Releasing your energy is fairly easy and directing it into a shape is managable, in fact you once knocked Yamada on his ass while he was unaware, but once you get into the issue of maximizing pressure & flow the process quickly becomes exhausting. Timing it with the flow of your leg movements is another challenge. You don't quite feel ready to use the technique in combat outside of as an opening move.

"A senior seated officer can do at least ten times that," You answer as you wipe your brow. Your limbs burn from the deprivation of spirit energy and you feel a great wariness in the core of your being.

It's simultaneously the worst and best you've ever felt. You feel like you're tearing a brick wall to pieces as you gradually improve.

"You know, most students don't even start learning shunpo until their last year. Most can graduate without having learned it if their conditioning is good enough." Seinosuke says. You had expected a rougher treatment from the upper classmen, especially after the first day when he asked you to demonstrate your ability to generate spiritual pressure and toppled him, but the black haired youth seemed curious to see what progress you could make.

The fact that no one else in this class could perform this technique excited you too, as much as you didn't want to admit it.

As you leap forward at the speed of sound you ponder how Isshin is handling his punishment.

---

"So he electrocuted himself?" You ask befuddled.

"Yes," Sei responds cheerfully as she awkwardly sweeps the main hall. The poor highborn girl has never held a broom in her life and it shows. It doesn't help that nobody wants to embarrass her by correcting her form. "He attempted the fourth Hado without an incantation."

Hmm Isshin must be feeling ambitious too. Honestly, you're jealous he got the mandatory kido practice. "What brought this on?" You ask.

"He was trying to impress the upperclassman he got paired with, apparently she's quite the beauty." Oh, well that's a valid reason to strive for greatness. "Aizen-san, do you think you'd ever pull a stunt like that to impress a girl?"

You pause and think of all the women in your life. "I think there is one."

Sei jumps a little. "Ah- can you tell me who that would be?"

"My zanpakuto spirit."

"Gah- That doesn't count! I meant among our class!" She pouts.

"I think it's a bit early for that," You answer matter of factly. Sei facepalms. "What?"

"There's no such thing as early! Especially when you're probably going to graduate before all of us!"

"I doubt that. I have yet to make any progress in Kido and I'm not very stellar at Hakuda either."

"Only because you're burning ridiculous amounts of energy in the morning on something we don't even have to learn! What happens when you're done with that?"

"So you think I should ask someone out?"

"Yes!"

"I'll think about it, I suppose." You don't really know who would accept though. Maybe Yadomaru-san?

---

It's the first day in months where you haven't had shunpo practice in the morning. Yamada-senpai had family matters he had to attend to apparently. The wooden practice blade has never felt so light in your hands before. Today your spar with Tosen Kaname is a far more even contest. He goes for a thrust towards your chest which you parry slapping his blade to the left. You push forward and bring your bokken down and to the right slashing across Tosen's thigh. Tosen pivots to the left to avoid being tackled by you and you slide a several feet forward.

"Stop" Fencing Instructor Nagakiso commands. You feel ecstatic. You've never managed to strike a blow on Tosen before, outside of what would be considered a mutal kill in a real battle. "Aizen, Tosen, you've really improved these past few weeks but I think you've been sparring too much together. Tosen-san please take a break and Tsunyashiro-San come up."

The white haired noble steps up and faces you. You both take your stances. You hope he doesn't try to wail on you without restraint like he does when he spars with his "retainers". It doesn't help that he has not spoken to you since the first day.

"Begin!"

Tsunyashiro Kimiya does not respect your wishes. He darts forward and you only barely step to the side in time as his blade stabs past your face. Your glasses brush up against the blade and are knocked off. Time slows for you as you see them twirl and tumble through the air.

What do you do:
[]Strikes against the head are a violation of the sparring rules. Break a rule of your own by flash stepping behind him and striking him down
[]You've had plenty of practice with Hakuda this past month. Swipe his blade to the side and step in to slam your elbow into his gut.
[]Perhaps you can repeat what you did with Yamada-senpai. Focus your reiatsu on him and strike him while he's temporarily paralyzed.
[]You cannot be seen without your glasses. Flash step away to catch them before they hit the ground and shatter.
[]Write in.

CH 2-2 Showoff
You're not sure why Kimiya broke one of the only three actual rules and tried to impale you in the face just now and you don't really care. You turn, your back now facing the rest of the class, to watch your glasses fly through the air in a ballistic trajectory. You can't afford to lose them both for the sake of your vision and your image. When you look at yourself in the mirror without the glasses you squint and your eyes become a lot more menacing.

You reach out for your glasses but the world seems to have slowed to a crawl. That is not a problem with your recent training. You kick forward, spirit energy pooling beneath you, and leap forward. You go flying past the glasses and only just grasp the handle between your finger. The world returns to a more normal pass as you land four feet away and carefully put the glasses back on. You turn back to face Kimiya and your classmates. Their jaws have only now just begun to drop.

Kimiya glares at you. " A little overkill, don't you think?" You frown and your brow furrows. That's all he has to say? An idea immediately pops into your head.

"No, but perhaps this is." As before you vent your spirit energy only this time with no control over its shape, merely only making sure its aimed at the man in front of you. Kimiya immediately falls to one knee and you smirk as you step towards him, sword raised high with one hand.

You pause for a moment to consider the most painful blow you can inflict on him as permitted under the rules. Nagakiso raises his hand again.

"Stop."

After a moment, you lower your blade and both of you walk off. Kimiya doesn't even look at you instead he shoots a look towards Isshin. How strange.

---

"By the way, that was incredible how you just gave Kimiya the look of death," Isshin proclaims between frantic bites of ramen. The man eats fast and frequently.

"It's not really. It's a one trick pony. Anyone with a firm grasp on manipulating reishi would be prepared for it." You and Kaname consume your meals in a more reserved fashion.

"Yeah but the look you gave him was so intense too! It was like you were the buddha consigning someone to hell!"

"Uh, I don't believe that is how that works," Kaname chimes in.

"Well Aizen-sama in that moment looked like a man who could hold the world in his palms!" That also seems incorrect but you let it slide.

"I was merely upset at that outburst. Do you have any idea what brought that on?"

"He's been beefing with me lately," Isshin shrugs. "He wants to form an association of nobles among the student body or something? I told him that sounded pointless considering there's like maybe ten of us in the academy total right now. Then when he tried to talk about maintaining our dignity I told him it sounded boring."

"I don't see what I had to do with that."

"I guess he sees you as one of my peons? Maybe it's cause Watanabe-chan shot him down this morning."

"This is the first I'm hearing about that," You reply. Though that would make a lot more sense. Kimiya needed to blow off some steam and you were apparently the closest thing. "Do you think I should go talk to him?"

"Nah, screw that guy," Isshin slams down his bowl to accentuate the point. "If he gives you more trouble just kick his ass!"

"...But that's how this all started..."

"Perhaps you should challenge him to a duel and kill him," Kaname suggests stoically. You and Isshin stare at him waiting for the punch line to drop. It doesn't but you swear you hear a woman laughing off in the distance.

"That's messed up!" Isshin responds. You're just curious where this is going.

"It's the inevitable end point of any cycle of violence. Fisticuffs with someone just leads to greater alienation and hostility." Kaname speaks confidently as if he's a lecturer at the academy himself. Isshin's posture loosens.

"Oh you're just on another justice thing..." Isshin replies relieved.

"Though if Aizen-san wishes it, he will have my blade," Kaname adds.

Isshin knocks the bowl over as he reaches over to pull Kaname towards him and whispers hurriedly "Don't ever say anything like that in public again! The Omnitsukido is always listening!"

Kaname pauses in thought. "...I'm sorry. I did not think of the consequences. I apologize for any inconvenience I've caused you." He whispers. His tone is frantic and seems sincere and yet...

"I think we should call it a night," You suggest. You pull Kaname away and you quickly depart as the chef begins to quarrel with Isshin over the shattered pottery.

---

Before heading to bed, you decide to meditate. You close your eyes and when you open them again you find yourself outdoors sitting in a field of grass. Before you is a gondola on an elevated hill and a river bending around it. Beyond that your surroundings are a blur.

"Hello, Ou-sama. I'm so excited to finally meet with you face to face." The woman in the pink flower-patterned yukata smiles. Her hair runs long and hides her left eye. She gestures for you to follow her to the gondola. Crickets and Cicadas chirp and buzz as you kneel before the short legged table at the center of the gondola.

"It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Miss...?"

"You already know my name. You just have yet to find a reason to speak it." The woman leans to the side and draws a tea set from under the table. "Though with how strong you're getting that might be a while."

"I was told being strong was generally requisites for communing with your spirit..." You take a sip from the tea, and then another, and then another. It's quite good.

"What if I told you clarity of purpose was more important to utilizing my power than martial prowess?"

"That would just make me curious what your ability is? Perhaps you could give me a hint?"

She frowns. "A sword without something to be swung at is just a trophy piece, Ou-sama. Please find a use for me..." Your vision begins to dim.

"Isn't protecting Seireitei enough?" You ask hurriedly. "Defeating hollows and maintaining the balance of the world and all that?"

"I am more than gardening equipment, Ou-sama... Surely there is something you want..." The world disappears and you're back in your room. Kaname sends you a glance, nods in recognition, and returns to reading his texts.

A goal huh? You'd never put much though into applying to the academy besides the opportunity to get away from a life of menial labor and accounting. You'd never fancied yourself becoming a great hero even after the initial exam at the academy suggested you had spiritual reserves on par with that of a vice-captain. Why would your inner spirit talk about such things?

A yawn escapes you and you decide to delegate the matter to tomorrow's Aizen. You depart to bed.

Over the next month two especially interesting events occur (choose two)
[] You have a word with Tsunyashiro Kimiya about the sparring incident. It goes well but he presents you with a... strange offer.
[] Onabara-sama sends you on a training mission to the real world with some upperclass-men.
[] You've been meaning to ask Shiba Isshin about that strange technique he used last month during the bar fight. Where did all that sand come from?
[] You ask Yadomaru-san out on a date. How bold!

CH 2-3 Springtime of Youth
"Shiba-sama," You pat Isshin on the shoulder as you depart history class. (This time it was more of a civics lesson).

"Yes, Aizen-sama?" He turns and smiles at you.

"I would like to talk to you regarding last months incident. Also you know you don't have to call me that,"

"You're right it's been long enough, Sosuke-san."

"Oh uh, I guess that's alright," You really did not expect that. Honestly, you were kind of hoping he'd call you senpai. "Anyways, I wanted to ask you about that techique you used during our altercation..."

Isshin's smile fades and he stares at you intensely. "Let's talk about this elsewhere,"

---

Isshin leads you out back past the courtyard, where you practice your morning shunpo, and past that to the grove behind the school. His tone has left you speechless the entire journey there.

"What you're asking of me is to share a Shiba Clan secret technique. One that at a young age I was forbidden to use." He turn from you and faces a tree. Holding his palm out, he spins his arm in the shape of a slight spiral. Then he thrusts it into the bark of the tree and in a flash sand pours from the impact site.

No, you quickly realize. It's not that sand pours from the bark but that a portion of the bark has become sand. Transmutation of reishi is certainly novel by the stands of the kido taught at the academy.

"But why was it forbidden?" You ask hesitantly. Could this spell produce things other than sand? Such as pure spirit energy? What have you stumbled into?

"It was many years ago that I did a terrible thing..." Isshin dejectedly answers. He sits down legs crossed and you join him. "I was a young boy at a shiba family gathering..." Isshin has a heavy look in his eyes. It gives the appearance of a far older man. "My cousin Kukaku wasn't paying attention to me so at dinner I turned her glass into sand and spilled wine all over her dress..."

You chuckle. "That doesn't seem so bad...?"

Isshin seems to stare past you. Then he looks down at the ground. "You wouldn't understand.... the wrath of that woman." He rubs his forehead like an old wound has come back to life. Then he perks up again. "After that the clan elder said I couldn't use it anymore for pranks. So you want to learn it?"

"I... well yes," You answer. That doesn't seem to be a healthy emotional shift.

"What's your proficiency with barrier spells?"

You pause for a moment. "Well zero, I haven't been able to get decent kido practice in as of late so I've focused on Hado. " Hopefully that would change soon with your two month punishment near it's end.

"Alright, first we gotta get that out of the way, but I want one thing in exchange," Isshin answered.

"Wait, didn't you say it was a secret technique?"

"Yeah, but earth magic isn't that big a deal. If you wanted to learn about fireworks though... you'd have to join the family.... say do you want to meet my cousin?" After that description of his family you don't think you would.

"I think it's a bit early to think about marriage arrangements, besides what was it you wanted from me?"

Isshin blinks and you swear you hear an inkling of dejection in his voice. "Oh I wanted you to sign up for the combat art tourney this spring."

"I'll have only been here a year by then competing against those who have been here for four. How far do you expect me to get in the bracket?"

"And two springs from now you'll be in the thirteen divisions!" Isshin pouted. He pauses for a moment as he regards your shock. "I'm just a little worried about you, is all. You're always so inclined to just sit back when was the last time you went hog-wild?"

You think back to the last time you acted in the heat of the moment. You remember with a tinge of satisfaction your spar with Tsunyashiro Kimiya. The catharsis of your intense training finally paying off, and being the subject of everyones gossip for the rest of the day didn't hurt either. Perhaps you could re-capture that moment.... No, you don't want to be that kind of person but then again did not your zanpakuto ask you to be more ambitious? But likewise would she respect a man who chases such base desires?

"Also. all the girls will be watching," Isshin helpfully adds.

You're reminded of your conversation of Sei. You guess that's something you should be doing, and really isn't impressing a woman what you're trying to do to achieve shikai? Haha, oh dear.

"Perhaps I will give it a shot," You answer. " But are you sure you want to train the man who'll take first place from you?"

Isshin laughs. "Maybe I'll be scared when you can actually cast something more complicated than Sho."

"Why don't you try casting something on me right now?" You smirk and stand up. Before Isshin can reply, you take off flash stepping your way back to the dormitory. Luckily no one is in your room to see you arrive and immediately fall over wheezing for air. You've broken your record for longest distance traveled many times over. You suppose you'll have to break it quite a few more times if you wish to come out victorious in the tourney.

---

"Good news!" Yamada Seinosuke announces as you step onto the track field. "We're not doing practice today!"

What a shame.

Seinosuke lets out a brief yawn and continues. "You can go back to bed. Onabara-sensei has decided you should accompany my class on a training mission to the real world today." What. "Meet us on the roof of the Western Hall an hour after dawn, and bring your zanpakuto." Seinosuke turns from you, and walks off.

"Wait, don't you have more to say?" You ask. Seinosuke shakes his head and continues walking.

---

Instead of going back to sleep, you sit atop your bed with your zanpakuto on your lap and meditate. You see nothing and lapse into slumber.

---

"Good to see you made it," Seinosuke greets you. His class is slightly smaller than yours it seems.

"Is this the first year prodigy?" A short and stout student your age asks.

"I'm Aizen Sosuke, first year. I suppose I am somewhat of a quick learner..." You bow.

"I heard you can do flash step? Can you release your zanpakuto too?" A purple haired student with a pony tail adds. You find it difficult to meet her gaze and not just because she has a little height on you. You wonder if the girls from your class will look like her too in a few years. Suddenly the things you discussed with Isshin and Sei resonate a lot more with you.

You briefly have second thoughts about joining the tournament.

"Hey dolts, introduce yourselves first," Seinosuke shoves his companions. "This is Kenta and Aki. They'll be following us today as we hunt down the dummies."

"Dummies?"

"Yep, did you think we were going to hunt real hollows?" Aki giggles. "I don't think you're ready for that yet, but I think it'd be fun to see you try."

"Yeah, there's a group of sixth years who set up a kido barrier around the training area. If a hollow actually breached it we'd have to cancel the exercise and run back here." Seinosuke adds.

"Don't worry though, I'll protect you." Aki smiles and you suddenly become very aware of the existence of your beating heart.

You find words out of your grasp at that moment so you just bow again. "I'll be sure not to let you down." You add hurriedly.

Seinosuke grins. "I doubt you'll have trouble. All we'll be facing today is some puppets with their strings being pulled by kido."

---

You exit into the human world in the sky. For a split second, you feel terror as you fall before being grabbed by the collar by Seinosuke who quickly explains the particulars of the human worlds spiritual atmosphere and the art of levitation. You quickly take to it, but you don't think that'll save you from future teasing today.

Below you is a sprawling orange desert adorned with great rocky plateaus. You would assume the area has never been inhabited had it not been for the structures carved into the side of the plateau walls.

Immediately you hear a loud thud to your left and turn to face it.

Off in the distance, you spot your first hollow. You can't make out the fine details of its mask but it's black bulb shaped body, adorned with dull yellow strips, with a massive lance extending from the bottom is quite striking. Your eyes can hardly keep up with the motion of its flickering wings and constantly twitching arms either. Less graceful is the way it constantly bashes itself into the invisible barrier, only made apparent by the flash of light created on impact, haphazardly and impotently.

"Wow, that's a big one, and pretty eager too showing up this early," Seinosuke observes.

"Is this a common occurrence?" You ask. Sweat rolls down your forehead, and you wonder if the rest of the Human World is as hot as this place.

"Yeah, of course. They usually show up once per exercise because of the collective spiritual power of the class," He answers.

"It probably wants to gobble you up," Aki adds and slaps you on the back. You jump a little. "I bet if it took a bite out of you it'd become a menos." She laughs.

"Good, we'll know who to throw at it if it breaks the barrier!" Kenta chuckles. You raise an eyebrow. You can't let this stand... especially not with Aki watching...

"Wouldn't it make more sense to leave the slowest one behind, Kenta-senpai?" You suggest. You really hope he doesn't know how to flashstep.

Kenta eyes tighten. "Why don't we see who in that group it is? Race you to the practice area?" Well damn. You really hope he doesn't make you eat those words. Maybe paralyizing him with your reiatsu would work, but then again the exploits of your spar with Kimiya have spread far across campus.

You don't get to answer as you and the other students turn to face the newly re-appeared door in the sky, the Senkaimon, in response to the large spiritual pressure emitting from it.

Out of the doorway steps a weathered old man, clad in the robes of a shinigami, whose gray hair spots a single streak of black dye down the middle.

"Apologies for the interruption," The man announces and bows, as he does so you note the one on the back. This man is a member of the first division: the elite of the Thirteen Court Guard Divisions. "Carry on with your training, and pay me no heed." The class begins to murmur.

You:

[] Introduce yourself and ask him what has brought him here.

[] Ignore him. The man did ask to be left alone and you just realized the distraction is a perfect opportunity to get a head start on Kenta.

[] Write-in.

Aizen has gained knowledge of Seppa. The technique will automatically be unlocked when his rank in Kido reaches Trained. Aizen has also gained knowledge of GIRLS.

AN: I'm going to give 100xp (to be spent at the end of the arc) to anyone deranged enough to write an omake about Isshin and Aizen going on a date as @RedYellowBlue suggested earlier. Writing the first half of the update reminded me of that.
