@Alex on the sad occassion of the hiatus. Non-canon as such, but basically, the hiatus in Watsonian terms:
"I can't believe this is happening." Kensuke held his head in his hands, trying not to cry. He knew he cried way too much these days. He wished he was strong and smart like Mana, or strange and powerful like Kaworu, but he wasn't, as today had very much proved.
"I don't blame him," Maya said weakly, kicking her feet. "Your dad is just trying to look out for you, and with all that has happened in the city, well..." Maya turned away. She, too, was trying to be strong. "He's just trying to protect you."
"It's not fair!" Kensuke snapped, tossing one his models that had founds it way onto the dining room table onto a adjacent wall, colourful bits of plastic shattering. "I had so many plans! I was gonna train with you or... learn hacking or... something! I was gonna help. I was gonna be worthy of you."
"Kensuke..." Mana reached out a hand and placed in on his shoulder. "It's not about worthy. You could sit on the sidelines while Kaworu fought a hundred of his battles and I would not love you less. The truth is... with my... past... and Kaworu's..." Mana smiled. "Well, Kaworu's Kaworu. I'm not sure either of us could have made it here without you. You're our rock. Our shy, nerdy, built close to the water rock. And I wouldn't change you into some big hero even if I could."
Kensuke placed a hand on hers. "So what now?"
Mana sighed and pulled Kensuke down with her back onto the couch. "Now... now we hold each other and hope that the sun never sets and your father never comes to take you away." She stroked his hair as he lay his head on her chest.
"I don't want to go," Kensuke said, to Mana but also to the world.
"It's not going to be forever. I don't know much about all that EVA stuff, but all wars have endings. And when this is done we'll be here, and I expect you to come running. And until then... well it's not like we won't see each other – we'll have our phones and games and those chat rooms you showed me. I might send you a few photos if you get lonely..." Mana tried to smile.
"But I won't be here," Kensuke said plainly. "I won't be here when you need me, when Kaworu needs me. I won't be here far all the bad times, and the good times. I will only have memories."
Feeling some wetness on her cheeks, Mana drew herself up. "Well then, let's not sit here moping, let's makes some!" Pulling the boy up so that they were both standing Mana laughed as she looked Kensuke straight in the eyes. "Dance with me!"
Tears momentarily forgotten, Kensuke turned a unique shade of pink "Dance? I... I mean sure but... why?"
Mana giggled, but genuinely, her heart in her throat. "That night you and Kaworu invited me singing, our first date really... I didn't know what I was signing up for. I thought there might be dancing too. I practiced in front of the mirror for hours, only to find out it was just some bar." Mana smiled broadly and blushed with her boyfriend. "Isn't that funny?"
Awkwardly Kensuke swallowed and put one hand on Mana's waist, while the other clasped with hers. "I've never really danced before."
Mana copied Kensuke's stance, making the boy squeak when she put a hand around his waist "Just... hold tight and move with me." Mana began to sway. "What was that song I sang that night? It was fun but sad."
Kensuke smiled as he followed Mana's lead. "Blondie, I think."
Mana nodded as she gripped him tighter. "That's the one." In a slow deliberate cadence, so as not to cry Mana began to sing. "
Once I was in love, and it was a gas, he soon turned out to have a heart of glass..."
Kensuke could not help but grin at hearing Mana's song, moving his hips in time as the two gently moved around the carpeted living room. His main worry was trying desperately not to step on his love's feet.
"
In between, what I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine. Love is so confusing, there's no peace of mind. If I fear I'm losing you, its just no good, you teasing like you do." Mana gripped Kensuke tightly as she whispered in his ear. "After this... maybe we can go upstairs and make some more memories."
Kensuke breathed in hard. "Mana, no... You don't have to do that for me if you don't want to."
Mana smiled as she felt the wetness on her cheeks return "I want to. For you, I want to."
Kensuke tried to remember the words, his voice cracking. "
Lost inside, adorable illusion and I cannot hide. I'm the one your using, please don't push me aside. We could have made it cruising yeah." Feeling like his heart was going to burst Kensuke kissed Mana warmly, like it was all here, it was all now and tomorrow did not matter. "Come on," Kensuke said in his best attempt at coy "Let's make some memories."
