I mean, he could be a fraud in the sense of him not really being who he says he is. He could be the body hopping immortal he is in Canon, that either passes on the secrets to the next incarnation, or one that just takes over a new body to keep on going. He's not a Genius, but rather just a guy with way more experience and knowledge than anyone else in the world.

[X] Maybe you're curious about what the Jaune boy's tent looks like. Maybe you want to stick with Nora and Ren some more. Maybe, miraculously, you haven't gotten your fill of Ruby's chattering yet. Either way you're going with them.

Ruby you're adorable yet freaking terrifying at the same time. As it should be I suppose. Yang continues to be a good big sis; you kind of have to be to keep someone like Ruby in check, clearly. And outside it giving me Kakegurui flashbacks I'm kind of interested in what's up with that examination too; it'd be one thing if just Juane had passed it- I can think of some semblances that fit- but Ruby too? Hopefully we can learn more about it in time.

For now, let's get our supply situation in order before we forget and hit a wall later.

[X] Don't you still need to restock on dust? Go pick your way through the markets.
I just wanna know what fucking cards reading they got. Especially since it's Ozpin giving the reading...

Yeah, but that leads to the rabbit hole of Crow (the Scarecrow) being presumed* to be the former lover of Salem (the Wicked Witch of the West). Really, the entirety of the Oz characters start getting weird if you follow the rabbit hole of source material too much.
Qrow: Listen, it was one time, and I was drunk-
Ozpin: You're always drunk.
Qrow: ANYWAY, it totally doesn't count.

Amazingly, that isn't from the original source material.
Don't forget the Good Witch being friends with the Witch of the West and her having a thing for that guy too. Rabbit hole. The insanity just keeps going.
And neither is that. I think you're a bit confused about Oz canon.

I suppose the author could use the Wicked versions, but there's no particular reason to unless there's a compelling plot hook to be used. It certainly wouldn't be 'following the original source material' though.

Oh, no, I knew that. It's just fun to see how crazy the rabbit hole gets when you look at things like that.

While I would absolutely love to chat with Yang right now, this is probably the most natural point to go off alone and do Pyrrha stuff that we're gonna run into. We should use it to restock on dust stuff and listen around for useful gossip and such from the assorted hunter-aspirants. Might learn something useful enough to be leveraged into success against Glynda this way.

Ruby does seem to have actual psychic powers that let her spot Grimm, so I'd buy she can also predict card draws. Summer apparently got in that way, and I'm guessing Ruby inherited silver eye powers from her, as per canon. No one's mentioned Jaune having silver eyes, though, so it might be semblance weirdness, as might his spacing out for a bit. Either that or someone's feeding him answers (which might also be Semblance or magical weirdness).

It's interesting in that that power doesn't seem to be psychic in nature though or anything of the sort; she indicates that she can "smell" that her grandmother was possessed by a Geist, not just some sort of vague mystical sense. Unless she is speaking more figuratively. that seems like ultra-sensory perception and detection of Grimm, which wouldn't really apply to a bunch of tarot cards- two very different kettles of fish. Juane I'm almost certain is whatever his semblance is, and his spacing out for a bit probably plays a role. I wouldn't be surprised if it involves being fed data, or it potentially being something akin to remote viewing, though that one is less likely.

I don't know why you would think that vague mystical senses can't manifest as smells, but it is almost certain that she was being metaphorical, since 'X doesn't smell right' is a common idiom for things that seem or feel off and virtually never used literally.

Ruby didn't say that the woman smelled bad, she said 'something didn't smell right'. That's some kind of vague intuition, rather than scent.

I don't know why one would jump to the conclusion that a physical perception has a mystical sense in origin, though I concede it's certainly within plausibility. And she then gives a straightforward response to Pyrrha seeming to take her completely literally ("You just chopped her head off based off a bad smell?" is a pretty clear sign that she didn't interpret it as an idiom), but I'll also concede that that could be Ruby being Ruby, and Pyrrha just not knowing of it as an idiom. It's absolutely possible.

On the other hand, given that we are having a discussion that is entirely based upon a single anecdote spoken by somebody who often doesn't engage with other people in a predictable manner, and therefore are essentially functioning on almost total guesswork, we could just wait for future interactions when it'll be clearer exactly what the nature of her powers are, which'll clear the dispute up.

(Also I've heard people say "something doesn't smell right" in terms of actual smells, so it's not as universal an idiom as you're asserting. But it's really not a big deal.)

"Um, well, I was just visiting Granny Finta, right?"
I literally face palmed hard enough to hurt when I read this.

This. Jeanne D'Arc claimed to be lead by divine inspiration so Jaune probably has some variety of mystical insight.

You take a moment to think. You feel like there's been something that's slipped your mind recently. Something rather important that you've been forgetting every time it came up.

Oh. Right. Now you remember.

It's dust. Specifically, your lack of it. You burned through your supply fighting the Nevermore. While in retrospect, that was a bad idea considering the extended combat you were put through immediately afterwards, the bird didn't want to come down and it had been the optimal combat choice at the moment.

"I would enjoy the pleasure of your company," you explain to the golden haired dragonness. "Except I have things I must be doing."

She looks you up and down. You jut your chin out and give her a silent smirk as her eyes rove over your body, but she merely grins back at you, unapologetic for staring.

You really do quite like this girl. She's got character.

"Resupply?"

"Yes." You nod an affirmation. "I've been running on empty since this morning."

"Ah yeah, you should go get that fixed." Yang waves you off. "Going to need that dust when tomorrow comes around."

You trace your path back to the merchant you saw earlier. The one with the large coat and the cap with the feather in it. You had wondered, earlier, there was a merchant here. Why someone would be selling dust for the initiation. Dust was incredibly valuable in combat, and in all likelihood the merchant would end up needing it themselves.. It seemed a bit counterproductive to be trading away their own necessities, even if the profit margin was considerably higher in the forest.

In the end, you don't really care. The merchant can do what she wills. The convenience of her service outweighs any need to investigate. If some fool wants to sabotage themselves for short term gains, more power to them then.

You'll take advantage of opportunities when you see them.

You find the merchant in the middle of a very noisy transaction with a very familiar face. White hair, crystalline blue eyes with the hardness and sharpness of ice, and a voice that could command legions if she didn't scream so shrilly with it. The walking royal court that is Weiss Schnee is practically impossible to miss, though you don't recognize the ribbon-wearing pale-as-moonlight black-haired-amber eyed girl standing behind her. With the long black, red-highlighted hakama, and high collared sleeveless kimono top, long-white sash, blue obi, and the unbalanced long black detached sleeve on her right arm, she reminds you of the new fashion trend that has been sweeping the higher classes of Mistrillian high society recently. Shrine maidens, you think they call themselves.

It makes the large cleaver-like hatchet blade that hangs from her waist seem incongruous with her outfit. It is too bloody and brutal - a slab of barely worked metal, still bloody from the forest's Grimm - to match with her attire's elegance.

That isn't to say it's a bad combination. Quite interesting, in fact. It hints to a refined appearance but a wildness in private.

You rather like it.

"This is outrageous!" Your eyes turn back to the Schnee - the mysterious girl in black and white following still. "I could acquire 100 grams of pure, military-grade dust at this price instead of the trash that you're offering."

"Well in case you haven't noticed, princess, we're not exactly in a situation where people can exactly stroll into a dust shop with the Schnee logo painted bright and white across its front," the merchant replies in a softly gentle feminine voice, laced with hints of roughness that speak of long use and strain on the throat at the edges. He- she?- glares back at the Schnee.
"Transportation costs are going to be huge if you want some of my 'trash' out here in the middle of nowhere."

Weiss fumes. "I- oh, Pyrrha!"

You're spotted approaching the commotion. You incline your head slightly in greeting. "Schnee," you say before looking at the other two.

"Belladonna," the black haired beauty offers. "Blake Belladonna."

The merchant grins at you. Now that you're up close you can finally take a good look at their features. Half of their face is obscured under the high collar of their large black coat, which by the way it holds its shape around them, is certainly held up by struts or wires or something of the like. What little of their face you can see is tanned and freckled in a way that speaks to exposure to the sun, and their bright blue eyes are almost completely hidden under a spritely red-feathered green felt bycocket cap which flops around their head.

"Back, eh? You can call me Piper." They say cheerily. "Girl."

You raise an eye. "I didn't ask."

"Nah, but I can tell." You think she shrugs under her coat. It's so voluminous you can't tell. "Not going to make me grow out my hair and ditch the coat and cap and wear a dress, but I'd like to not think I'm so ugly that people mistake me for a male so humor me on this one, alright?"

"She yelled at Weiss," Blake shares with you.

"Belladonna!" Weiss promptly snaps. You guess that it wasn't information she meant to be shared.

"Hmm?" Blake looks back at her companion, face expressionless."My apologies, Weiss. I thought she was your friend? Was this not something to be shared?"

She talks tonelessly - but you can't help but feel like there's a faint sense of amusement under her expression.

"I- no, we are friends..?" Weiss shoots you a questioning look. You think for a moment, and then give her a shrug, an affirmative motion in only the vaguest sense.Sure. Why not. You're in a good mood right now. Besides, she's at least proven herself enough to have made it to the mustering point.

That in itself isn't a low bar to clear, but she's also shown you more respect that a certain blundering redhead you've met, so you're more positively inclined in her favor than you would normally be.

"Right. We're friends." Seeing your affirmation seems to bolster Weiss's confidence. She continues, though slowly, with looks that seem like she's gauging Blake's expression every other moment. "I just would like it if you let me share such details, myself."

"As you wish," the Blake girl acceeds.

A flash of hurried relief passes over Weiss's face before she wipes it off her face and returns to her normal superior expression. "Good. That's all I ask."

That's an interesting exchange right there. Service, but with caveats? "You two seem to be quite familiar with each other."

"Blake offered her help in the forest." Weiss explains offhandedly, her voice casual. "My pathfinding skills needed a little… brushing up on, and Blake offered her services."

You look towards Blake. She shrugs. "Weiss is hardly a subtle figure, and I thought it would be worthwhile to lend her my support."

"Indeed." Weiss nods along. "Naturally there will be people who seek to make good with me. And you, Pyrrha?"

"Me?" You turn your gaze lazily in Weiss's direction, resting your eyes on her.

"Have you found any allies?" Ah, so it's that old question again. "I think we could work well together."

Your lips curl at the edges. You're in the mood to find this amusing rather than just boring. "And what of Blake?"

"There is no need to worry," Blake says smoothly, stepping in before Weiss can respond. "I am merely Weiss's supporter."

"Right." Weiss's eyes flick between you and Blake. Now you're really interested in what happened in the forest between the two of them. "So…"

"I've met a few people," you answer noncommittally. "I haven't decided who might be good on my team."

'My team'. Because you're definitely going to be the one to lead it. Who else would? Nora? Please.

You'd strike her down if she even so dared to try to rise above you.

"I-"

"Not to interrupt your catching up." Piper interjects, cutting Weiss off before she has the chance to speak. You'd half forgotten the coat-clad girl was there. "But are you going to buy or not? Scarlet offered to cook up some rations for me and I'd rather not go hungry tonight."

Weiss trembles, brows furrowed and fists clenched from being interrupted, and lashes out with that anger back at the coat-clad girl. "Not at those prices!"

"Well, give me an offer." Piper smirks back at her, brushing off Weiss's anger like rain..

You watch silently at the two slice at each other with harsh words as they bargain. It's not as if you're unfamiliar with the sight; you've seen it multiple times. Your uncle, though you'd prefer not to think of him much less acknowledge his positive qualia- was a largely self built man who carved your family out from the brink of poverty with only his cutting words and cunning wit.

But you certainly didn't expect the Schnee girl who grew up in the lap of luxury to be that desperate for even the smallest of savings. You wonder what sort of childhood she had if she fights this viciously for every scrap of lien. It was an incongruity - one who should have grown up without understanding the value of lien, to fight so determinately for even only one.

You shift your weight from side to side, impatient. While the haggling was interesting at first, it has grown tedious. Finally, after near fifteen minutes of bickering, Weiss throws in the towel. Quietly, she shovels out a much reduced amount of lien for a few vials of dust that the other girl procures from her coat. She slides them into bag.clearly custom made, and well made at that. without much fanfare.

Piper folds up the lien into her coat before turning to you. "And you?"

You name what you want and get a price that a little rich for your taste. You frown. Is it really that expensive?

You're hardly lacking on money, but you only have so much in personal assets and you'd die before going to go begging to your family for more lien.

[ ] Weiss spots your frown. "Pyrrha," she says with deliberate casualness, like she's trying not to have you lose face. "Since we're friends why don't I cover for you?"

Piper shoots her a look that seems to say 'if you have that much money that you can afford to buy dust for your friends, why did you spent that much money trying to chop the price of the dust you just bought down'. You on the other hand are pensive.

She's certainly not doing this for free. She'll want a favor.

[ ] Piper watches your face twist. You watch her eyes calculate a bit before she suddenly smiles at you. "You know what? Why don't I give you a bit of a discount."

"What's the catch?"

"Why does there have to be a catch?" Piper says with a smile. "I mean you're Pyrrha Nikos, right? I'm a fan, a big fan. If it's just a small favor for my idol, I'm sure I could do it."

The unspoken assumption is that she'll be wanting a favor back, of course.

[ ] Forget it. You'll just pay. You dig lien out of your pocket and just shell out. Your wallet is going to be hurting, and you might have to find a job or some way to earn more money lest you go crawling back to your uncle at some point but you're not going to go around owing favors to anyone.

Anyone.

QN: Juan de los Arc is @logiccosmic 's original character do not steal. He will show up eventually in the story riding a horse and using a giant windmill for a spear. He is a master class fighter and 10x the lover as he is a fighter. His power is that he can warp the very skeins of fate to accommodate his presence. Unfortunately he is too high class for this early segment and will not be introduced until late in the quest.

I have a conversation planned for the next segment but I don't actually have the contents of the conversation planned. What would you guys like to read? Throw me some suggestions.
There is a way to get dust without owing anyone a favor or having to pay exorbitant amounts of money but it involves the power of friendship and I'm not giving any more hints than that.

Honestly I just can't see Phyrra willingly owing favours to people she's just met / barely knows. She doesn't seem the type.

I agree, but I could see her 'accepting' Piper's offer. After all unspoken assumptions are not legally binding agreements and this is business, not something between friends. If she thinks that selling something for an honest price is enough to get a favor out of Pyrrha Nikos (who is probably somewhat used to people offering these favors freely as a way to curry influence) then more the fool is she.
