Monster (A Star Wars Imperial Navy Defector Quest)

[X] -Terror. Utter terror.

IMO, the most appropriate option.
Excitement would see the good admiral become a warlord, and relief would rather lean that way as well.

[X] -Excitement. Invigorating excitement.

This story is explicitly intended to be about a monster. It would make sense for her first reaction to the destruction of the pillars of the galaxy to be excitement over the new opportunities available for advancement. I also really like the idea of her joining the Rebellion / New Republic purely out of a desire for power rather than a moral realization over the evils of the Empire.

[X] -Relief. Inexplicable relief.

Going with these for now. Both work, and maybe just slightly hint at our Admiral possessing the shrivelled remains of a conscience.

On the one hand, the system that's her entire world and seemed undetectable, the cause she's dedicated her life to and killed countless innocents in the name of, has just vanished. There is no precedent or plan for any of this and the Admiral knows that none of it can be preserved in the long run. Blind fucking panic is an understandable response.

On the other hand, maybe there's just a hint of relief that the undefeatable system that demanded she slaughter innocents in the name of order cannot demand anything from her anymore? That the inescapable, all encompassing empire gas just stopped existing and she is finally free to give the orders (whether that's a good thing or a terrible thing is, of course, up in the air).

Update 3 Writer's Commentary (I guess):

One of the best parts of writing something like this, in this way, is mixing the more obscure shit up, and like, having both Horst Strage (Actually Pellaeon) and Rae Sloan both order the retreat from Endor to Annaj, because having a clusterfuck of both orders and (on the meta level) canons unapologetically delights me.

That and using big girl swears like "fuck"in Star Wars >: P

Also: There's something interesting in seeing the moment the Empire dies in someone's heart. The instant that ripple arrives and the only reaction is "fuck". How many people did this happen to in this moment? How many millions of Imperials having similar thoughts in the hours and days following Endor? In Legends the first major Warlords happen two days after Endor, when Admiral Prittik is unable to make up his mind at Annaj. The Empire dies quick... as it was always meant to, Palpatine very much embodying the sentiment of "Apres Moi, le deluge"

Amen to that! All the replacements that some shows use to get past censors annoy me even more when people decide to use them in fan works. What's the point?

Lol, it's not like people don't fuck in the Galaxy Far Far Away. I can see replacing something very Earth centric like "Jesus Christ" making sense, but why wouldn't they use something like "Fuck" and "Shit"?

I know it's literally Disney, but really now!

[X] -Relief. Inexplicable relief.

Because even a loyal imperial would have to feel relief that the chance of Vader or Palp breathing down their neck is not longer a possibility.

[X] -Terror. Utter terror.

Vaere committed her crimes in part because she was not brave enough to stand up to the cruelty of the Empire. I like the idea of her learning bravery and principles eventually, but she should start from a low base to make it more satisfying. As a split second reaction to the crumbing of an order you've invested so much in, I feel like fear makes the most sense to me.

I have one word (Repeated) for this.

Warlord! Warlord! Warlord!

Thanks for pre-emptively answering the question of "who actually ordered the retreat from Endor" for me. I was wondering about all that.

Chaos is a ladder. A rickety, old, rotting ladder, but that cookie jar is so close...
