Hey, Star Wars. Come here, I need to ask you something.

No, no, no. Not you DisCan, I'm not disappointed in you this time.

Legends come here. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. Okay

What's this?

starwars.fandom.com

Imperial II-class frigate

The Imperial II-class frigate, also known as the Class II frigate,[3] was a model of warship employed by the Imperial Navy.[3] The Imperial II-class frigate was a smaller, less powerful type of Star Destroyer.[2] These vessels had two extensive hangars on both sides of the hull,[3] which...

No, really. What's this?

Why did you call a class of frigate the exact same name and type number as a different, and in fact, iconic warship class.

Again, I'm not mad Legends. I'm just disappointed and confused.

So here's what I'm going to do Legends: We're going to forget this happened, but I will headcanon this craft as an Imperial Class-II frigate. As in a frigate class designated the Class-II and operated by Imperials.

That's what we'll do.

Okay?

Good talk.

Okay, I bet you that there has to be a story there. Like, some imperial slime ball somewhere named this much cheaper ship class in a confusing manner so he could request the funds to build a certain number of that frigate type and pocket the different in cost when people mistook what he was talking about.

Chaos IX
Chaos IX

89 Days after the Battle of Endor
Chandrila System, Bormea Sector

The Empire has always been at heart, a bureaucratic nightmare.

The Republic had spent millennia growing twisting and intertwining thickets of offices, ministries, agencies, bureaus, commissions, committees, departments, directories, boards, sectors, and divisions.

When the Emperor had come to power, it had been on the back of a promise to the Galaxy's people to cut away this fantastical haze of confusion with powerful offices of state and daring men of action.

In truth those new offices, Moffs and Grand Moffs, Grand Admirals and Warlords, had simply added yet another layer to the Republic's eternal maze of red tape. Jurisdictional overlaps, crises of command and authority becoming far more common than before as the bureaucracies expanded to fill the larger remits and mandates the new offices provided them with.

The men of action, the promised strong men who would cut through the Republic's red tape and deliver the galaxy from the bureaucracy's tendrils instead look around themselves, decided the red tape was a weapon and set about preparing themselves for war. They marshalled all their skill and ambition, reaching up and out of their little assigned spaces to wrap their hands around the tools of their jurisdictions. They did this and then they went to war with these horrific new weapons of prestige and paper.

For three long decades, the Empire's grandees, thousands of strong men and women of action, all worked towards the Emperor. They fought each other in bloody contests of paperwork and favour, played games with lives and wealth to catch even the most fleeting glimpse of attention from the Emperor, the one man who could elevate them into the ranks of near divinity overnight.

Fleet Admiral Shara Vaere did not consider herself one of those people.

She had always thought of herself as above these bickering politicians. She was a simple Naval officer, skill and loyalty were her coin. Nevermind that she fought her own battles within the Navy's own bureaucracy. Nevermind that Admiral Shara Vaere had dreamed dreams of influence and schemed schemes of blackmail sealed in the blood of hundreds of thousands.

That was simply how the Galactic Empire worked.

This wasn't something to question, the Emperor's will for struggle simply... was.

But now the Emperor is dead. That animating will, that grand Imperial axis around which the entire Galaxy had revolved was gone.

Already the Empire's nightmarish layers of paper and electrons had begun to ferment into a heady labyrinthine stew of muddled authorities and mixed jurisdictions.

Which is to say, that tracking down the origin of the orders to transfer her squadrons to Shadow Hand Command had been a bit tricky.

She'd called in her own favours, run through a catalogue of officers who were indisposed, dead, or clueless. She'd had working lunches with Wiezel and his cronies. She'd canvassed her own subordinates for leads. She contacted ex-girlfriends, former superiors, family, family friends, and classmates.

She'd even directly asked the new Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Uther Kerman what exactly was going on. Querying the man's office on the legitimacy of these orders. To no effect.

In the weeks it took for her to make any headway, she'd dispatched Vice Admiral Seles to take her squadrons down the Commenor run, running roughshod over the petty complaints of governors and petty Admirals that commanded sectors that comprised single worlds and fleets that were composed of little more than a line or two of frigates or cruisers that couldn't stop a full Squadron, much less the half dozen that she'd dispatched.

To be honest, most of the Admirals and governors were thankful for the help. The recognition that someone higher up the chain of command remembered their existence. The other half? Well, how many fleets did the governor of the ruins of Camaas have?

They hadn't caught a lot of pirates yet, though Seles' "Strike Wing'' had prevented at least one attempted hijacking by a rebel aligned militia operating out of Delaya, in the Alderaan system.

Seles had sent Vaere an excited message with a nearly pornographic amount of detail about the ambush. Cheeks flush with excitement when the small woman had used to her hands to demonstrate how her TIE Hunters had pinned a mixed unit of Y and X wings against a convoy escorted by a pair of Class-II frigates, destroying nearly the entire Rebel unit in a single devastating pass before they even knew what hit them.

Seles could be a frighteningly bloodthirst person in a cockpit. Certainly more prone to aggression and recklessness than when she was on a command deck. A place that Vaere often insisted that Seles stay.

But as of now Seles had the excuse of her Strike Wing being too new to delegate to junior officers. So Vaere didn't quite yet feel comfortable ordering Seles to stay on her bridge. Like any other woman, sometimes Seles needed to blow off steam.

And after that report had come her first sign of progress on the mystery orders, which she'd heard from an acquaintance of an acquaintance of an acquaintance in the Bureau of Ships and Services had been automated orders issued by something called "The Contingency".

Now that Vaere had something to point to, she worried at the problem like she was trying to cut through a durainium hull plate via polishing.

She shortly thereafter hit another wall, but she was then able to call in more favours to learn of a number of similar orders being "relayed" by the Naval Intelligence Agency.

Vaere learned of this from a cousin that had gone into Imperial Intelligence and who was now all happy to spill information about Naval Intelligence in exchange for what she was able to dig up on her end.

As it turns out, her cousin informed her in grim tones, the situation on Imperial Centre was -as always- a complicated mosaic of backstabbing and danger. And in this case Naval Intelligence Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax had gotten into a pissing match with Imperial Intelligence Director Ysane Isard, and shortly thereafter that man had vanished from the Imperial Centre.

The assumption had been that one of Imperial Centre's many forty story construction droids had built a whole city block over the Fleet Admiral's decomposing corpse.

Or, that had been the assumption, until Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax had started relaying orders from an untraceable location in the name of The Contingency. The orders held a similar level of clearance as that of the Chief of Naval Operations, but seem to have been relayed by Rax, a now apparently undead warlord at large in the galaxy.

Often these orders were to dispatch units to the deep core, or towards the fringes of Imperial space on mysterious errands. Like the dispatch of Admiral Sloan and a number of outer rim fleets to Akiva.

Obviously Vaere now felt no remorse in ignoring the orders of some petty warlord who held an equal rank to her own. In fact she felt no loyalty to a man who'd simply appeared one day atop the Naval hierarchy without putting in the time like her and her fellows.

Really, where did he go to the Academy? No one could tell her. Rax just showed up as a Commander in Naval Intelligence one day. Why should she, a good Navy woman from a good Navy family have any deference to some spook who'd probably spent his youth stabbing gangsters in a Nar Shadda back alley somewhere?

She didn't.

But Gallius aside, whatever the Contingency was, her contact at BoSS insisted that it predated Rax, and her cousin in Imperial Intelligence insisted that they didn't know what it was either. He hinted heavily that if she ever did figure it out, Imperial Intelligence would be much obliged.

What this meant for her and the Empire, she didn't yet know.

What DOES this mean for Vaere in the immediate term? Please vote for TWO Advantageous Consequences.

Advantageous Consequences

[ ] In the absence of any other orders some of the Imperial Navy detachments operating along the Commenor Run have decided to officially throw their lot in with Admiral Vaere and the First Bormea Supremacy Squadron.

Add the equivalent of a light squadron to Vaere's order of battle

[ ] Vaere hasn't burned her contacts across the Empire, in fact she's expanded them to a degree, and they're willing to help Vaere out where they can.

Get details and advanced warning if someone else Imperial (warlord or loyalist) moves against Vaere

[ ] Vaere gets lucky and manages to dislodge more information on exactly what The Contingency and Admiral Rax are up to. Something involving an "Operation: Cinder"?

Automatically Progress this narrative chain without spending more time or resources on it

[ ] During her fruitless searching and calling in contacts Shara did manage to find a great deal of information on what exactly is going on across the galaxy.

Gain the early results of the "[Vaere] -putting out feelers to the wider galaxy." action as an additional bonus

[ ] During her little jaunt through the bowels of the Imperial rumour mill, Vaere managed to uncover information directly relevant to her.

Gain the early results of the "[Vaere] -putting all her attention into following the tracks of the assassination attempt" action as an additional bonus

These serve as insurance against getting blindsided by an(other) Imperial warlord.

Advanced warning at no cost of our network? Sign me up for that, after all information is key for success. An extra squadron of ships as well? An excellent deterrence for any jumped up warlord or rebel who thinks this is the best time to strike.

It says in the title that this is a a defector quest, so...we may as well get ready to defect.

I think we should take the boost to the assassination investigation. As I've said before I'm fairly certain that it was ordered by the Empire in some capacity. If I'm right finding that out will probably help disillusion Vaere and perhaps her local command staff with the Empire, and perhaps give us an excuse to get rid of our ISB agent.

In a newly chaotic galaxy, info is king. Fresh, accurate info is even better

Actions feel like our most limited resource at the moment so a free one seems like a steal. Aldo if something bad is coming soon I'd prefer a little bit of warning.
