Miracles of Ancient Wonder (RWBY/D&D Homebrew)

[x] head to the roof. Freedom and Purity you are called to defend, so free you shall be.

[ ] Go to the garden. From the land it came, and thus on the land you shall meet it.

-Gain Landwarden trait: Beastspeech added to languages known, lifesight 20 feet, ???
--- would Grimm even show on lifesight? I'm under the assumption that it's going to allow to detect anything that's alive, not sure how useful beastspeech could be, talking to animals? it could be a boon if more magical animals start to appear or are allready present

[ ] head to the roof. Freedom and Purity you are called to defend, so free you shall be.

-Gain Skycaller Trait: Gain flight speed five, Thunder, Lightning, and Wind spells gain +2 to their saving throw difficulties, ???
--- now this is something that I would go for if I was playing a game, it seems to have the most bang for your buck

[X ] Bathe in the stream behind the house. Into the flow of life you have been swept, and its currents shall carry you forward.

-Gain Lifeshaper Trait: All healing spells provide +2 Wounds upon casting, ???
--- this seems very interesting, besides the healing bonus what other branches could this unlock? I doubt it would affect grimm however it might well unlock some powerfull abilities down the road, could it lead to temporary buffs or some permanent changes? or allowing the cha to make some new lifeforms?

Shouldn't Ruby talk to her dad as well? she talked to Qrow and Yang, maybe see how her dad is doing, heck he could insist on Summer being the one true mom and Ruby could agree helping to put his mind at ease, possibly opening up later conflict with the three when the subject is brought up again. I don't think Tay will want to share all that much in the immediate future, maybe later when the girls are older.

Ozpin will probably pop up in a day or two, I'm not sure what time of day it is and if he can make the trip, magic would be an hot subject and I could see him drop everything to investigate the matter however him being the headmaster he might be juggling some balls that he can't afford to drop on short notice.

Oh damn I just rechecked the stats, damn those wisdom and charisma scores :) I think those will come in handy later on, Child of the Forest trait sounds interesting, perhaps Landwarden could provide more synergy?

Will the Pyrrha and co follow the canon path until Beacon or will they be different as well? I'm curious who else will gain magic, either way you're going to have people complain, keeping it to Ruby would make her overpowered, allowing Cinder to gain access to it will have people complain about buffing the vilains even more, a third faction would need to be filled with OC's who would yet again have people complain. Good luck it's going to be interesting to see what you choose.

"Yeah I'm a girl but I'm also a gun!"
More like "walking natural disaster." ;)
@Ericwinter Do Grimm count for the life sight? Will Ruby be developing her canon Semblance, or does the Primal Magic negate its development, or will she develop a different one due to our decisions? If she does get her canon Semblance, will the limited flight afforded by it be redundant with Skycaller's flight, or additive?
I haven't quite decided if you'll get a Semblance or not, especially since people might just forget or forgo Aura altogether, but if you do it will probably be a different one, since Ruby will develop into a different person.
Talking to animals is cool and all, but flying? Come on now. Lifeshaper... I'm not sure exactly what we're even looking at there.
Keep in mind that the flight, at this point, is little more than floating around. These option are just the start of focus branches to help direct character development, and Lifeshaper is the healing/restoration one.
--- would Grimm even show on lifesight? I'm under the assumption that it's going to allow to detect anything that's alive, not sure how useful beastspeech could be, talking to animals? it could be a boon if more magical animals start to appear or are allready present
The Grimm would be more obvious for their absence than their actual appearing in the sight, since they'll provide a void. Kind of like noticing a super-cool area with heat vision.
--- this seems very interesting, besides the healing bonus what other branches could this unlock? I doubt it would affect grimm however it might well unlock some powerfull abilities down the road, could it lead to temporary buffs or some permanent changes? or allowing the cha to make some new lifeforms?
All of the above, and then some. Grimm, I'm probably going to treat as undead for most cases except direct control.

He's not really in a place for any sort of coherent conversation, and Ruby recognizes that. Trying to talk to him at all would just get you yelled at.

It'll take a bit, since organizing a brief hiatus is difficult. That's part of the monthly scheduling you'll get soon.

Depends on how things play out with rolls and your own actions. Chances are a no, since most are marked as preferential for randomosity, but you never know. Magic is going to be everywhere, so they'll at least be touched by it.

[X] Go to the garden. From the land it came, and thus on the land you shall meet it.

It's not going to win, but eh.

[X] Plan Blessing of Ice and Fire

That was enough. As the beast brought its claws down upon where you and Yang lay entangled, something seemed to finally click in your sister, and her eyes narrowed to slits.

Found what I was refering to in the earlier post, I didn't know if it was magic or just an expression you used regarding her eyes, figured I would ask, I've seen it used in both ways so I wanted to get it out of the picture early on. There was a Naruto fic I read a while back that was good overall however damn if the author didn't like using the expression of eyes narrowed to slits, after a while I just figured everyone had some sort of snakes eyes bloodline that randomly triggered when they were angry.

That's cool if magic is appearing in the world then you would expect that things are going to go down some unexpected paths, there's some quests that really went the extra mile regarding such things.

Yeah I'll admit things might be to hot for Tay to think straight right now, Yang showed signs of that as well, like father like daughter :)

Answering the Call
[X] head to the roof. Freedom and Purity you are called to defend, so free you shall be.

The roof, you decide easily. It's the safest place, with everybody on edge after the day's events and something about it's freedom calls to you. You move to the window, opening it and climbing out with the ease of long practice, memories of many nights watching the stars with Mom guiding your path, before ascending all the way to the peak of the sloped roof. It's almost sunset, you realize as you settle down, legs crisscrossed and staring out into the open sky. You had barely noticed noticed the day wearing on with everything happening, but now it is undeniable. Streams of burnt orange light, the last dying embers of day fall on you, warm and comforting with their glow. Slowly, you relax, and as your conscious mind relaxes its hold, you descend into the well of your power

Freedom. The word echoes through your soul, a sound and thought both as the winds wrap around you in loving embrace. For too long had the world lain trapped beneath the yoke of foreign gods, with even the cycle of life itself bent to their will. But now, now they were gone, their influence shattered, and so you were called to break the more physical chains, freeing beast and land itself from foul depredations and those dark powers which might take advantage of the chaos. You would be the will of Remnant itself written large upon the world, the first of many but no less exalted for it. The skies would tremble, the earth shudder, as you fulfilled your charge. You had but to grow into your power as might the sapling grow into a mighty tree.

WIth a gasp, you felt yourself suddenly released from the strange voices that had gripped it, an ancient sea of knowledge, power, and wrath. It almost felt too much, at first, the order that had been lain upon you, but then the truth of it emerged. It was not an order, but trust. The Choir of Life would not force you to obey, for that would go against the very tenets they wished you to defend, but the power was yours all the same. They simply trusted you would not betray them. IT made you happy, in a way few things had since your mother's death.

Eventually, you were distracted from the enormity of what had just happened by the realization that you had not, in fact, collapsed back to the roof. You were still floating in the air, held aloft by gentle winds. For a moment, you poked at them with your mind, and when they obeyed your will to shift you to the side, a wide smile broke out on your face. Oh, this was going to be fun.

XXX

After almost an hour of floating around, you find yourself collapsing into bed, a tired but satisfied smile on your face. It sucked that you couldn't do much more than float around slowly, but now that you knew your power would eventually grow you couldn't wait until you were zipping around like a hummingbird. And so, as the world order changes and time passes, life must go on.

How do you spend the next month?

Major Actions (Choose One):

[ ] There's someone Uncle Qrow would like you to meet (Begin quest "The Emerald Wizard)

[ ] You want to find out more about this mysterious "birth mother" of Yang's. Perhaps a better planned trip won't end so badly. (Begin quest "The Raven's call")

[ ] You feel… something, calling you from the depths of the forest. It sounds like it's in pain. (Begin quest "The Weeping Willow")

[ ] Your dad plans to go shopping for some essential supplies. Maybe you can find a nice trinket? (Being quest "Fang and Claw)

Minor Actions (Choose two)

[ ] Hang out with Yang some. She may be grounded but you can find ways around that.

[ ] Talk to Dad. He's been angry recently, and you would like to calm him down some.

[ ] Play with your magic. Maybe you can learn a new spell?

[ ] Ask Qrow to start training you in combat. Magic is nice, but you would like more ways to protect yourself and those you care about.

Prologue complete! Gained 300 EXP

Level up!

Trait options:

Landwarden trait: Beastspeech added to languages known, lifesight 20 feet

Lifeshaper Trait: All healing spells provide +2 Wounds upon casting

SkyCaller II: Flight speed increases to 10, +5 feet range extension to all weather spells

OOC: If you wouldn't mind providing a level-up plan as well, that would be nice. You can find the full formula in the Level Up section of the rules.

[X] There's someone Uncle Qrow would like you to meet (Begin quest "The Emerald Wizard)

Off to see the Wizard

[X] Play with your magic. Maybe you can learn a new spell?
[X] Hang out with Yang some. She may be grounded but you can find ways around that.

Let's combine these two. Hang out with Yang by practicing our magic.

[X] Your dad plans to go shopping for some essential supplies. Maybe you can find a nice trinket? (Being quest "Fang and Claw)

Potential early Blake. Hmmmm.

[X] Play with your magic. Maybe you can learn a new spell?
[X] Hang out with Yang some. She may be grounded but you can find ways around that.

I agree with these two minor actions.

We still need an actual level up plan people.

Hmm, the physical stats are throwing off my planning because they're apparently nerfed due to being a kid, and I don't know how they're supposed to be balanced back as we grow up. At the moment I'm leaning towards Dexterity, because it applies to all combat checks (except for Mental attacks), so having it at least to average so it's not penalizing everything is a good start.

Oh hey, we get to pick from the same Traits we just voted on. I'll probably vote for Landwarden again, since Lifeshaper won't help us until we actually get Healing spells, and doubling down on Skycaller isn't as much of a boost, though we'll probably want to keep investing in it over time.

@Ericwinter are we still limited to the list of Cantrips from last time for the three Abilities we can pick here?
Edit: Nevermind, I looked back at the spell list.

[X] Plan Earth's Bounty
-[X] Landwarden trait: Beastspeech added to languages known, lifesight 20 feet
-[X] +1 Dexterity
-[X] Simple - Detect Magic
-[X] Complex - Goodberry
-[X] Grand - Entangle

Longstrider-simple

You touch a creature. The target's speed increases by 10 feet until the spell ends.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.
I think some info's missing here. When does the spell end?

Cure Wounds-complex

1 Action

Instantaneous

30 ft (30 ft )

A creature you touch regains a number of hit points equal to 1SPL(V). This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the healing increases by 1SPL(V) for each slot level above 1st.
Minor typo.

Healing Word-complex

1 Bonus Action

Instantaneous

60 ft

A creature of your choice that you can see within range regains wounds equal to 1d4 + SPL(V). This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the healing increases by 1d4 for each slot level above 1st.
Why's Healing Word just a straight up better version of Cure Wounds when they're the same level?

Goodberry-complex

1 Action

Instantaneous

Touch

Up to ten berries appear in your hand and are infused with magic for the duration. A creature can use its action to eat one berry. Eating a berry restores 1 wound, and the berry provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day.

The berries lose their potency if they have not been consumed within 24 hours of the casting of this spell.
Does the Lifeshaper trait affect this? Batches of 10 not!Zenzu beans that could potentially heal 3 Wounds each, that can be made every few minutes without resetting previous batches, that last 24 hours? Yeah, that's really good.

Hunter's Mark-simple

1 Bonus Action

1 Hour

90 ft

You choose a creature you can see within range and mystically mark it as your quarry. Until the spell ends, you deal an extra 1SPL(V) damage to the target whenever you hit it with a weapon attack, and you have advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) or Wisdom (Survival) check you make to find it. If the target drops to 0 wounds before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.
Oh, I definitely want to get this as soon as we get an actual weapon and start combat training. I just like Marked For Death abilities, and it'd give us a major boost in chain killing Grimm.

Once again I'm frustrated by the Grand restriction, especially since so many of them are self-centered AoEs with friendly fire.

I basically agree with veekie's level choices, I'll just add the Attribute point and an actual plan format.

My fault, I think I missed that when transfering things over.
Why's Healing Word just a straight up better version of Cure Wounds when they're the same level?
Again, my fault. WHile reformatting, I misread a few things, and the ranges for cure wounds were accidentally replaced with create water's. It should make more sense now.

Honestly, I want to say no since looking t that kinda makes it overpowered, but considering the action cost necessary and that this is basically the ind of thing Lifeshaper was made for... sure. I think a good balance is not allowing multiple instances of Goodberry to exist, so you can't just stock several hundred at once. Ten berries on the field at maximum, unless you've got multiple casters.
Once again I'm frustrated by the Grand restriction, especially since so many of them are self-centered AoEs with friendly fire.
There's a reason I chose those for the Grand Spells. They're meant to be either first strikes or last resorts.

I'm not changing my other votes, but this seems like an interesting character progression. Plus if there's a twist that Yang can literally become a dragon, then this should allow us to continue coordinating with her should she stop being able to speak a known language.

You might want to at least copy paste it over or the vote tally will leave it out. Also, since when was my name DragonParadox? I think you're in the wrong quest for that ;P

I have never heard of this 'DragonParadox' nor am I sure I ever will again, but I know one thing for sure. The internet takes no prisoners and people often think they're clever by doing silly tricks like that. Hence bet hedging. Good quality reading though, keep it up please!
