[MGLN] Enforcer Quest : What the future hold

Okay, Bki's argument has convinced me. :eyeroll:

[X] Renaud

Some thoughts on the following build:

First of all, support spells are, honestly, not fit for Emma. She is a close combat specialist who will need her mana for direct applications to the opponents' skulls rather than sharing it with friendlies. She also has a penalty to control and a penalty to non-combat spells, with this field falling under both classifications. As such, it is only logical to discard their use, relying on our familiar and allies for such tasks.

Moving on, the opponents here use hit and run tactics so, normally, strong forcefields difficult to break out of would be a very useful asset. However, points cannot be spared for it without weakening Emma's melee prowess. Furthermore, it is likely that the enemy will have a mage specializing in the field; as such, without extra points dedicated to them, forcefields are largely useless for this mission anyway. And if we want to spring a trap, we will have time to set it up so efficiency becomes a lesser factor. In light of this, putting those points instead into areas that may allow us to bring the enemies to heel and round them up before they can even think of retreating is a much preferable option, I find.

I envision Emma as a strong- and fast-hitting fighter in Zest's vein. Thus, 2 points placed into movement spells for high mobility, as well as melee spells and shields for active attack and defense. A point put into binds primarily for sneaky, tricky trapping purposes (obviously Reina's influence there). And the last field of specialization is Information spells. If we had Eve, I would limit this to a single +, regardless of reflex enhancement. Alas, without a big badass wolf always there to protect her back, Emma both needs a greater expertise in searching/tracking spells herself and needs to react faster herself.

That, while looking good, would put the build at 9 points used, which is just one point away from suffering the unknown doomy doom of doom full penalty mentioned by Bki earlier. That's bad. Out of the listed categories, it's probably the safest to remove a point from melee spells seeing as the magic system already grants us 4 pluses to it. Overspecialization is also a thing, and there's no use in having S rank melee spells when they will dry the user's reserves faster than their names can be announced. If anyone has other ideas, though, I welcome any suggestions.

On baseline stats, this is up for discussion as to what is most useful and why but I've singled out Emma's reflexes in her backstory so I'm sticking with that.

[X] Plan Ferian Remastered

[+] Mêlée spells : Close combat spells and weapon enhancement.
[++] Shield spells : Defensive spells covering only a single direction in exchange for more stopping power. Often repel an attack.
[+] Capture spells : Spells used to restrain or detain a target, covering both bind and cage.
[-] Force-fields : Spells separating a large area from the outside world, often also applying some kind of effect inside the force-field.
[---] Support spells : Spells increasing the capabilities of allies. Also, healing spells.
[++] Movement spells : Rapid movement and flight spells.
[-] Dimensional spells : spell involving manipulation of the dimensions. Notably include teleportation spells. Things like the Arc-en-Ciel would also fall under this.
[++] Information spells : Spells related to information gathering and data processing. Notably, include reflexes enhancement spells.

Device
[X] Astra Purna
The professor, who had helped design and had personally overseen the device's creation, was given the honor of naming it. The foreign to her ears term "Astra", according to the professor himself, denotes a divine power in a culture from a far-away non-administered planet. "Purna" translates to perfect, complete, absolute, all. The naming theme for her spells is also derived from the same culture. She thought it largely unimaginative, what with every other spell ending with the same "astra" but hadn't objected out of respect for her teacher; it was also a convenient convention, as she would later find.

[X] Standby Form. A bracelet of classical Belkan design, usually carried around her left wrist.

[X] Bident Form. It looks like a bident with two straight, parallel blades*, and it works like a bident. It's used as a bident/spear, even. But if you look at it as just a bident, you will miss the small muzzle between the two blades and will get shot in the face at point-blank range. This is the device's shooting/sealing mode. The bident's blades double as conductive rails for Emma's most powerful powerful shooting spell, Vasavi Shakti, which fires a metallic projectile carrying a potent magical charge at several times the speed of sound using the principle of a railgun and mana conversion to power it; this allows for unmatched penetrative property and outright excessive destructive ability. Due to high risk of collateral damage and high lethality, this particular spell does not see much use. In fact, its use can be troublesome due to laws regarding mass-based weapons on worlds within the TSAB sphere of influence (it isn't, technically, one but as a magical attack that uses mass-based projectiles, it is up to interpretation; and people already pissed off at you for property damage will be more inclined to interpret things not in your favour). As such, the muzzle between the bident's blades is typically used to fire lesser shooting or bombardment spells.
Looks a lot like this, but without the helix motif and with actually bladed blades.

[X] Crescent Form. A polearm with a large, heavy blade on its business end*. This is the mode primarily used for close combat, and on top of being a highly effective weapon by itself in Emma's hands, it's the form most attuned to her melee spells. A plasma extension can be generated around the blade, dramatically increasing the weapon's cutting power. Alternatively, the blade can be used to focus and hold a strong charged of conversed elemental mana that can be unleashed on a moment's notice; this trick is often used if the opponent chooses to block an attack with a melee weapon of their own, placing them within range to be thoroughly shocked. The back of the blade holds a thin chasm that can likewise accumulate unconversed mana and release it in a torrent of force driving the weapon forward towards its target for a much faster and more powerful blow than anticipated. Alternatively, a spell derived from flight/motion spells can be used to generate a similar effect, of lesser effectiveness but continuous. Other melee spells can be used with this mode as well, of course.
*Looks like a guandao akin to Guan Yu's here but with the dragon head replaced with a cartridge system akin to Bardiche.

[X] Slash Emperor. A new mode devised fairly recently on Chrono Harlawn's suggestion. The shaft of the device is shortened for more comfortable wielding, and the physical blade of the polearm is substituted with a torrent of plasma focused into a thin, flat shape.* The lesser weight of the weapon allows for faster, if lighter, swings. The issue of decreased striking power is mitigated by the increased penetrative power and overall destructive capability. The size of the blade can be altered by increasing or decreasing the energy output. Using the cartridge system, it is possible to extend the blade to colossal proportions, with the limit being the user's ability to hold that amount of power in a coherent shape. Due to her control issues, Emma cannot effectively use this form for extended periods of time or extend it to truly huge length without a risk of it exploding effectively in her face. For the time being, she has found applications for the principle that the original wielder would probably pale upon hearing about. For example, using a manoeuvre similar to Barrier Jacket Purge, Emma can overcharge and forcefully disperse the blade, thus unleashing a torrent of lightning and plasma in a short- to mid-range conical area in front of her.
*The appearance of the resulting weapon is akin to Sannosuke's zanbato
Yup, I'm totally not stealing Fate's trick here. I'm having Chrono do it for us.

(Haha, indeed, @lordhasen's proposition is fitting)

*cough* *cough*

Just saying that I would very much like to have a majority before closing this vote.

...I'm not sure how to interpret this. Gaus originates from a Medieval nickname of the same vein as "birdbrain", which isn't exactly appealing, or a name a noble bloodline would want. If you're referencing Carl Friedrich, though, I'm certain Emma would be flattered by the comparison.

EDIT: Also, have a pic of Emma enjoying a fight way too much.

Yes, I was referring to Johann Carl Friedrich Gauß. Mostly because his work in Magnetism, and after him named Gauss gun. I know we are using a Rail gun, which is by the way much simpler to build but somewhat less efficient than a Gauss gun. Have you problems with playing with a name of a real person's name? If yes, I could propose names like Golf, Polo or even yugo.

*sigh* Do I really need smilies to denote every joke I make? I know well enough who that man is, what he's done, and why coilguns are great. I had simply poked fun at the surname's origins.

But if you want to take this seriously... sure, I'll play along. Nope, I'm in no way annoyed by the patronizing-appearing remarks of Captain Obvious' caliber. Not at all.
Etymology kinda matters here - no proud warrior race guy/girl would stick with a family name that means "breeder of geese" and is typically used as an insult to a person's intelligence when they get a noble title. As such, no, I don't find that last name particularly fitting. As for Carl Friedrich, as awesome as gauss cannons are, they are only named in reference to him. I find that his personal achievements as a mathematician would be of much greater importance to any mage - a mind attuned to math is pretty much a requirement for a mage of any ability, so being compared to the greatest mathematician since antiquity would be a damn fine compliment, if they knew who you're talking about.

Moving on to coilguns and why they are not so awesome in the present context...
First of all, the comparative efficiency of a coilgun versus a railgun depends strictly on the specific implementation. Furthermore, with magic allowing for considerable advantages that are impossible to replicate with currently available technologies, that is, frankly, beside the point. The issue of import is the desired application of the principle, which in this case is a ranged weapon built into a primarily close combat weapon. A coilgun is fragile and sensitive in comparison to a railgun's simpler design. With magic providing for a plasma armature and mana shielding to substitute the barrel, the railgun will remain functional as long as the rails are undamaged. A coilgun, on the other hand, would require for the entire barrel to remain safe lest we want the device to explode in our hands. That is even without mentioning that a coilgun would need a physical barrel in the first place. With that consideration in mind, a coilgun may be the better choice for a long range specialist mage who stays their distance and does not engage in melee but that is not Emma.

Also, her issues with control also favour the railgun - it needs but a single, if powerful (which is not an issue with Emma's inclinations), pulse to fire, whereas a multistage coilgun (a single-stage one will not have the necessary power for a weapon, especially for the scope of this setting) needs high precision switching between powering the coils in succession.

Such are my considerations for choosing a railgun over a coilgun here.

It's a shame we don't have an extra point or two to grab that third 'physical condition' dot, but everything I see in the layout looks to be well-considered and important. The name is pretty funny, by the by. 'Fox' indeed.

I will keep the build vote open until the next update.

I wanted to write more, but I don't want to delay this update more than it already was, and I lacked inspiration for continuing.

...

The leader of the IDF is an imposing man. You yourself are rather tall, and yet he tower above you. A middle aged man, with short, greying hairs and piercing blue eyes, his looks betrays his experience, even discounting the missing eyes and various large scars marring his body. As for clothes, he wear what you assume is the uniform of the military police. It comprises of a tunic and trousers, white coloured with red ornaments. An elaborate symbol on his shoulder boards indicate his rank. You're unfamiliar with the exact symbols used in the area, but from his position, it isn't hard to guess he is at or close to the top of the hierarchy.

The man look at you for a few seconds, before turning toward Yana. The girl squirm under the disapproving glance. He sigh.
"I guess it was too much to expect you would be on time..." he says tiredly, before turning back to you. "Sorry about my subordinate." He say. "You're the one the Bureau sent?"
"I am, sir. Enforcer Emmanuelle Renaud, at your service."
"General Kian Kaer. It's good to have someone with your expertises here. I would have liked to resolve the case without counting on the Bureau, but we have a severe lack of manpower, and the situation proved to more critical than we had estimated."
"Preventing Lost Logia and destructive weapons falling into the wrong hand is one of the reason for the Bureau existence." You answer. "It isn't an inconvenience for us, and neither is it a mark against your forces." He nod.
"We have prepared accommodations for you." He give a glance at Reina. "We didn't anticipate a familiar, but if you request, we can have another, bigger place ready latter on." You look at Reina, who shrug, before answering.
"We'll first see the place you have prepared." He nod.
"Now, for the case... Yana and the others member on it will give you a detailed overview. Apprehending the criminals, while hoped, isn't the priority, so much as preventing them for obtaining the data, as well as protecting the various dig sites and preventing them to steal dangerous artefacts from them."
"Simply reacting to their actions?" You ask.
"Not necessarily. If you find promising leads, you should obviously follow them. But it should not be at the detriment of safeguarding the Lost Logia... Now, do you have any question?"

Do you?

[] Write-in.

Any details regarding the case, we can ask for from the people working on it. This, among other things, includes the Lost Logia, their form, purpose, and function. Their time of origin is unnecessary trivia, and random guesses to what shape they have shows impatience. Both of these are telling of an astounding lack of professionalism. Let's not do that, okay?

Now, what are our points of interest with this important person? The case, obviously, but more specifically, the aspects of it that will be difficult to handle without his involvement:
- release of classified information
- going past bureaucracy, if we need urgent access to a restricted area, for example.

Both of these, if they come up, will need his direct involvement so the only thing that I can think of in terms of questions would be a way to contact him.

Another important point is what we should expect in terms of access and cooperation. What are our priviledges for the purpose of this investigation? We are not part of the local hierarchy so how do we fit in? By proxie, meaning we'll have to rely on someone's willingness to cooperate, or is our status determined in a more concrete manner, such as a temporary rank/position within the local structures?

One more thing that comes to mind is, just how far does the enemy's access stretch? As the former ruling power who had reigned supreme until fairly recent times, their capabilities might be more far-reaching than we expect. What is the likelihood of them not listening in on official channels? Heck, what is the likelyhood of them not listening in on the current conversation? Are there channels with security he is truly confident in? What is the probability of someone involved in the case or at least having access to the relevant data being compromised or an enemy agent? And in reverse, can the people we will be working with be reliably trusted to be loyal?

The most important matter of all, however, is whether we can trust him. This is not something to ask, though. Not just that, but it may be best to work on the assumption that yes, he is only what he is and does his work diligently. After all, if the very top is compromised, this will become a clusterfuck of epic proportions, and we don't need a diplomatic incident on our hands. Though... had Eve won the familiar race, I would probably just go ahead and ask. Because superior senses, hightened perception, and enhanced data analysis via magic makes for a good lie detector.

[X] Questions:
-[X] What is my status with the local law enforcement / military? Will I need a proxie for official matters, and who are they if so?
-[X] Should I expect the enemy to be listening in on this conversation? I am half-joking but only half-joking. Are there secure communication channels he is truly confident in?
-[X] Is there a way I can contact you directly when necessary? If yes, what would be the acceptable conditions to impose on him so?

Also, Bki, can I maybe get a pre-emptive clarification if I'm listing something Emma knows or at least has an impression about IC already? For example, if this guy has led the revolution, it's highly likely that yes, he can be trusted. That sort of thing.

In a few days, I should have far less access to internet than I had previously. I will try to get an update before then, but after that it may take some time for the next one (though hopefully, I will take that time to have a nice, long update)

Also, Bki, can I maybe get a pre-emptive clarification if I'm listing something Emma knows or at least has an impression about IC already? For example, if this guy has led the revolution, it's highly likely that yes, he can be trusted. That sort of thing.

I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking here... If you could reword it?

I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking here... If you could reword it?
Some of those points may fall under Emma's IC knowledge that we are not aware of. For example, I've said that it's an important question whether this leader of the IDF can be trusted. But Emma may know background stuff that makes him either more or less trustworthy; for example, if he has led the revolution, his trustworthiness increases due to previously shown anti-royalist mindset, and on the flip side, if he has been high up in the former administration, the probability of him being secretly a royal loyalist increases.

Basically, if there is background information available to Emma in character (but not to us players) that is of relevance to what I've written in my previous post, it may be helpful to know it before we ask questions about something Emma already knows. Damn, I cannot keep it simple to save my life...

Hahaha! You can't hold me procrastination! I am too strong to succumb to you!

*cough*

Hum.

That say, the character sheets will have to wait some.

...

You feel it will be better to start with the potentially problematic question. You feel like you should be careful with how you phrase it though, as your (totally legitimate) comments have the unfortunate tendency to offend some people... Well, so long as you make it clear you're not implying they must be incompetent, it should be fine.

"I think it's strange how much the terrorists have managed to stay under the radar until now," you begin, before rapidly adding : "I'm sure that you did everything you could given the means at your disposal, of course, but they may have managed to get accurate intelligence on your moves. Maybe they have a high ranked infiltrator, maybe they have access to your network or maybe they found a way to monitor on this and other conversations you may have."

Kian let out a small smile.

"You're more perceptive than I feared you would be. With the way they have avoided us, we have suspected the same. We have replaced our network recently, using the most secures technology in dimensional space. While of course, it doesn't totally eliminate the risk, it is highly unlikely our network is compromised. As for infiltrators, we have effectuated thorough checks, and the few we founds were extremely low ranked. It is almost impossible that there is a significant leak."

He suddenly turn his head toward Reina, giving her a severe glare. The fox, who was likely about to share some humorous (for her) insight, as she often does, let out a small eep.
"I assure you I wouldn't find amusing the joke I can guess you wanted to make" He says a menacing tone. Turning toward your familiar, you can see her repeatedly nod her head, hoping her show of acceptance would pacify the general.

As if questioning the loyalty of a general having fought in the war against our enemies, during which he likely lost many friends and relatives, was a good idea, you muse, guessing what Reina had wanted to say.

He does, and return to your conversation : "As I was saying, however they avoided us for so long, it is unlikely to be because of a leak."

You accept his answer, and so decide to move on to your next question.

"Then, as we can talk without feat of being overheard, what about my position within your forces?"

"The officer charged of the case, is, to my great distress, my foolish niece next to you," he says while giving a disapproving glare at Yana, who shrugs in return. "She will act as a go between you and the rest of the force, though if needed, you can supersede her decisions. She is the only mage on the case that rank at A or more, though we can divert more fighters in an emergency. I think you can empathize with being understaffed so much, can't you?"

You can. It doesn't even surprise you that Douhalenn's army is even worse off than the Bureau when it comes to the number of high-ranked mages available. Those above B rank but below AAA tend to suffer the worst casualties, are they are sent to the thickest of the fighting where they are the most useful, but aren't yet good enough to thrive in such conditions like an Ace can.

"So..." You try to summarize. "I can command the task force formed to hunt the terrorist if needed, and call for reinforcement for the rest of the force in an emergency?"
Kian nod.

"I see." You continue. "What if I need to contact you directly?"

"I will send you a secure channel that you can use in emergency. Can I trust you judgement on what situation merit such a call?" You nod.

Your device soon announce the reception of the coordinate of say channel.

"Then, is that all?"

"I think so."

"You can go then." He nod toward you, Reina and Yana, clearly dismissing you.

"So..." Yana says soon after you leave "Would you like to meet the rest of the team? Or maybe you're tired from the travel and would prefer to do that tomorrow?"

Come to think of it, you're starting to feel a little tired... You should...

[] Meet with the team now.
[] Better be well rested. In addition, seeing them at the beginning of the day would give you more time to get to know them.
[] Something else? (write-in)
