So, instead of that update that I said I was going to try and do like 12 hours ago, here comes a meta question about pacing! (Why yes, I'm absolutely figuring out how to run a quest on a post-by-post basis and trying not to bungle this whole thing before we actually get to anywhere interesting.)
In the spirit of this being an actual quest and not just a fanfic, I want to give as much autonomy to the thread as possible to decide things - but I also think that needing two or three posts to get through one day's worth of game time is probably overkill. I also think, upon further reflection, it's probably not the best to be like "hey, plan out Kazuya's day" when we're still solidly in the on-rails tutorial part of the canon P3 timeline and there's just not that much to really do. (For those who don't have the game's timeline in front of them, the only substantial deviation so far is that the thread chose to show up earlier than "during the Dark Hour" which gave you an extra block of time to use as well as causing you to meet Igor early, meet Ikutsuki early, and bypass the canon "walking to the dorm in the middle of the Dark Hour" sequence). There aren't going to really be any major deviations until we actually get into a boss tutorial fight on the 9th.)
I can make the next update take us through the next three days so we actually get to the point where more interesting things start happening, or I can stick with my original plan which was to have the next update take us to the 7th (which has the welcoming ceremony for the school) and have you all vote again on how to handle that. If I do that, the only thing you really need to vote on is how resistant to the idea of schooling Kazuya actually is on a scale from "arriving to class early" to "unapologetic and flagrant truant." Would people prefer that over the original idea, which was to have shorter updates and votes on each individual block of time?
Similarly, once we do have access to everything, would people prefer voting on a per-time-block basis, per-day basis, or per-week?
I'm not a quest writer or anything, so take my idea with plentiful salt, but I think the solution can be summarised with "broad strokes".
Don't have us go into too much details with planning our day/schedule, but let us pick a general direction or way we want the day to go, along with some specific choices. So, I don't know how in-depth you're gonna go with social links, and if you can only do these social links on these days and time, yada yada, but as an example, we could say we want this day/week/time period to be more focused on some specific social links we want to advance, and then that's what happens for that time period, though probably with some dialogue vote choices when necessary. It's like overall looking at it broadly, but sometimes zooming in.
[X] Stay inside the dorm, but start exploring the common areas.
-[X] Head for the kitchen. Cooking is a very useful hobby.
Additionally, I've tried to make the end-of-post vote more straightforward but also more broad strokes.
Getting comfortable in your current surroundings sounds like the best possible use of your time. You reason that it's more important to be comfortable in your new living situation, given the circumstances. Iwatodai City will still be there tomorrow.
Owing to your previous circumstances, you don't have much in the way of worldly possessions, so it doesn't take you long at all to get situated in your room. From there, your attention turns to the rest of the dorm you have access to, and in particular, to the communal kitchen. Cooking had always been a hobby for you, before. Something about the way a little care, a little fire, and the right ingredients could come together to make something truly special spoke to you. And just like riding a bike, you might be out of practice now, but a little practical application will bring those skills right back to the fore of your mind. Equal parts joy and disappointment cross your face as you canvas what is almost already your domain by default. The kitchen was clean, meticulously clean in fact, in that sterile way that suggests long-term disuse. The lack of basic pantry ingredients doesn't escape your notice either. Nobody had used this kitchen in months, and it was such a waste. An understandable one, as a campus dining plan was a mandatory component of tuition for all Gekkoukan students, but still.
Taking stock of your new kitchen consumes the rest of your afternoon, but it's well worth it; you know exactly what you're working with, and you know exactly what's missing.
As it turns out, not only did you have the distinct honor of being greeted by the Chairman, but your dorm assignment has you living in the same building as Mitsuru Kirijo. You suppose that explains why this particular dorm is both of a distinctly higher quality and a lower headcount than the on-campus living arrangements, and you carefully avoid thinking about why that is as she introduces herself to you over - of course - a delivered meal. Carefully practiced polite introductions and unobtrusive small-talk that you filter out of your consciousness. Of course the food is delicious. If you have any problems or concerns, don't hesitate to talk to her or Akihiko Sanada-sempai. Yukari Takeba-san will take you to school tomorrow, to make sure you know the way.
After the meal, you're politely shuffled off to bed. Proper rest is critical to your health and wellness, and you can't help but note the way Kirijo-sempai expertly laces disapproval into that sentence aimed at both you and Sanada-sempai.
Safely put to bed, sleep finds you easily, and your dreams are mercifully empty.

Late Night
"Kazuya Minegishi, age 17. No permanent residence. Only living relative: Naoya Minegishi, older cousin, reported missing as of the previous September. A probable casualty of the Yamanote disaster, but no body and no confirmation."
Shuji Ikutsuki recites from the case file in clinical tones, as the two young women of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad split their attention between his voice and the monitoring equipment carefully embedded throughout the Iwatodai Dormitory.
Yukari is the next to speak. "Is this... really okay, though? I feel kind of bad, spying on him like this." She isn't alone in her objections - Akihiko had pointedly refused to even be involved in this, announcing he was 'heading out for a bit' and leaving without waiting for confirmation or approval.
"It's an unfortunate necessity, I'm afraid," Ikutsuki responds, "particularly given his unique circumstances."
Ikutsuki turns a page in his file as though he hasn't already committed the entirety of it to memory. "Saturday, August 31. Around 7:00 a catastrophic gas main failure results in the first in a chain of explosions that ultimately cripples the power and communications grids inside of the Yamanote Circle. Additionally, the entire area is affected by steady gas leaks resulting in mass hallucinations - reports of "demons" and the "end of days," and so on. Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces seal the area in an emergency quarantine that lasts for the next seven days. Young Kazuya is trapped along with his cousin and several hundred thousand others."
A carefully timed pause, as though Ikutsuki is considering what to say next, and not delivering a sermon he's given dozens of times before. "Following the official end of the lockdown, survivors are carefully moved through decontamination, debriefed on their experiences and provided with the highest standards of support to re-acclimate following the crisis. Unfortunately, as with any direct intervention on that scale, there were cracks in the process. Kazuya, and presumably his cousin, slipped through one of these cracks and disappeared."
"That's the official report, anyway." Ikutsuki smiles knowingly. "And, well, regardless of what actually happened, to survive such an unparalleled disaster... he must have tremendous fortitude. He'll be an invaluable ally to SEES."
"Sir, if I may," Mitsuru interjects, "we're not even certain that he has the potential yet. To say nothing of anything else." It's clear that, though she's going along with it, she's not entirely pleased with this affair either. Only Ikutsuki is truly pleased with the situation as it stands.
"Well, let's wait and see for now. The Dark Hour is almost upon us, after all."
Minutes pass in silence, until the world goes green under the influence of the Dark Hour - the hidden 25th hour that occurs every night at midnight.
Kazuya remains unaffected by the phenomenon, sleeping unaware.
"That's one question answered!" Ikutsuki's smile widens. There was clearly never any doubt in his mind. "As you can see, he's retained his human form. He's asleep, but he's definitely experiencing the Dark Hour."
Mitsuru frowns, and turns to some other equipment. "Odd. There are less Shadows than usual in the immediate vicinity."
"Oh? How interesting... well, it's something to keep track of. On that note, we should continue to monitor him for a few days. Just in case."
"Yes, sir," Mitsuru confirms. Yukari's frown deepens, but she says nothing.

Morning
You're woken up by Takeba-san. "Hey, it's Yukari!" she calls through your doorway. After a moment's contemplation, you open your door to let her in.
"Good morning. Did you sleep okay? It's almost time for school, and Mitsuru-sempai asked me to make sure you got there okay since it's your first day here. Are you ready to go?"
Are you ready to go? The question turns in your head for a moment. The only reason to go to school today is to confirm your classroom assignment and sit through welcome ceremonies. The former is easy enough to get after the fact, and the latter promises to be a tremendous waste of everybody's time, but attending is what a diligent student would do. Besides, it is the first day, and good first impressions are important.
[] Agree that you're ready to go to school, and allow Takeba-san to lead you there.
- [] But immediately leave as soon as her escort role is over. You've got better things to do.
[] Try your best to extricate yourself from this arrangement and make your way to school on your own.
[] Find ways to stall for time, become late, and otherwise not make it to school.
[] Ditch school entirely and openly. Nobody's going to notice one (two?) missing students in the crowd.
If you go to school, you'll spend the entire day at school. Feel free to write in specific things you'd like to do at school when not engaged with ceremonies.
If you don't go to school, how would you like to spend your day?
[] Follow your heart and explore your new surroundings.
[] Something else... (write-in.)

In the Persona 3 canon version of this scene (which would've happened on the 8th if you're interested in looking it up in a Let's Play or something), Ikutsuki launches into an As You Know about the Dark Hour entirely for the player's benefit, which I like to think is because Ikutsuki is madly in love with the sound of his own voice. I've taken the liberty of writing up a quick Codex entry on the Dark Hour instead, which will either be edited or replaced in a future post as our in-quest information advances accordingly - I've decided on this approach rather than dumping a lot of late-game spoilers out here before we're even starting our second in-game day.
A 'hidden' hour that occurs every night at Midnight JST, the Dark Hour is a temporal distortion that came into existence 10 years ago. Normal humans caught within the area of effect of the Dark Hour transmogrify into coffins which protect them from the hostile environment and are completely oblivious to anything that happens during it. Persona-users, and those who have the potential to become Persona-users, are unaffected. Shuji Ikutsuki claims that he's had specialized training allowing him to enter the Dark Hour without the potential for Persona, but this may simply be an excuse. Besides the transmogrification of ordinary humans, the world itself is changed under the influence of the Dark Hour - the world assumes a sickly green tint and all bodies of water assume the appearance of blood instead. Additionally, random puddles of 'blood' form on various surfaces, even if those surfaces were dry outside of the Dark Hour.
Unmodified electronics cease operation during the Dark Hour, presumably because of the nature of the temporal distortion. It's possible to overcome this effect and the Kirijo Group has created electronic equipment that continues functioning through the Dark Hour, such as the extensive equipment within the Iwatodai Dorm.
The world of the Dark Hour is far more conducive to Shadows than the 'normal' world, and can be considered to be their natural habit, although it is known that Shadows are capable of existence outside of the Dark Hour. Shadows prey on the psyches of humanity - should a human without the potential for Persona be removed from or otherwise escape their transmogrified coffin, Shadows will beset them causing a host of effects from "Apathy Syndrome" up to and including being devoured entirely. Should a human survive the Dark Hour intact, they'll simply forget about their experiences entirely. By contrast, should the potential for Persona awaken in an ordinary human, they'll lose their coffin but won't be immediately preyed upon.
It's currently unknown what the maximum range of the Dark Hour is, or whether there even is one. A safe assumption is that the effect is centered around Tartarus, a massive distorted tower that rises from Tatsumi Port Island and exists only within the Dark Hour.
[X] Agree that you're ready to go to school, and allow Takeba-san to lead you there.
[X] You saw a man in a butterfly mask in your earlier dream, and he saw you too.
Protests rise up in the back of your mind, but you swallow them immediately. Easier to just go along with things for now, and besides, Takeba-san seems stressed already without you acting as a negative influence. So, with a polite nod, the pair of you depart for your first real day as a second-year student of Gekkoukan High School. Takeba-san makes polite idle conversation as you walk, largely to prevent an uncomfortable silence.
As it turns out, the train to Tatsumi Port Island is a monorail, sleek and modern. The glass sparkles, and in the morning sunlight the water you glide over sparkles too. You can imagine, for an instant, gliding yourself. A brief moment of rushing joy and freedom amid a neverending battlefield, or perhaps, the feeling a mighty bird of prey has as it circles its enclosure in a zoo.
You force those memories down with the ease of months spent practicing. Those days were over.
Takeba-san is looking at you with concern, and you politely pretend you don't notice.
Your attention turns to Tatsumi Port Island in the distance. An artificial island and a testament to the power of humanity to create from nothing, you find it even more beautiful than the water below you. There were reasons to be unsettled by everything about this situation, but those reasons could be left aside for just a while. Perhaps, you'll be able to make the most of this coming year.
If for no other reason, being able to take in the majestic landscape unfolding before you has already made this excursion worthwhile.
Tuesday, April 7
Midday
The cherry blossoms are in full bloom this time of year, and it makes for an impressive sight to take in as you walk a polite distance behind Takeba-san, who is busy greeting various other students. Your classmates, you suppose. Some butterflies flutter from tree to tree, completing the idyllic scene. You don't notice one particularly blue butterfly flitting about over your head.
Right on time for arriving, there's no shortage of students milling around, caught up in their own realities. Fortunately, a loose crowd of hormonal teenagers is well on the easier side of settings to blend into. You draw into yourself just so, fix a pleasantly neutral mask on your face, and the curious gazes slide right off of you.
Sadly... the effect is absolutely wasted on Takeba-san. It was a lot harder to disappear from someone actively looking for you than it was from people merely looking for "different" or "interesting." A slight drop in her speaking voice is the only indicator she might have even noticed what you were trying to pull, and if she did notice then she certainly didn't care.
You wince as she brightly, if quietly, welcomes you to Gekkoukan and informs you that you're going to love it here. That remains to be seen, you don't say. You've got it from here, you say instead, already moving for the shoeboxes and away from your escort.
"Hey..." You freeze mid-step.
Unbidden, a different pink-clad teenage girl flashes through your mind. You turn around and half-expect to see a trying-her-best-to-not-look-concerned Yuzu standing there instead of Takeba-san, carefully deciding on whether to hug you or strangle you or grow more arms so she can do both at the same time. 'You... you... IDIOT! I can't believe after everything you said about not running, you go and pull something like this?!'
The moment passes. It's not her.
"Listen, I know it can be tough, moving to a new school. And we dormmates have to look out for each other, so... let me know if you ever want to just talk."
You'll keep that in mind.
Takeba-san disappearing into the halls of the school with a cheery "See ya later!" makes it much easier for you to blend in. Already, the idle school gossip is about the presence of a mysterious new transfer student, but you note with some satisfaction that the rumors haven't developed beyond "spotted at the shoeboxes and welcomed to Gekkoukan by Takeba-san." A partial success - it would've been annoying if the mysterious transfer student had been seen arriving with one of the apparently more popular girls of Gekkoukan High.
You're in Class 2-F along with Takeba-san. Of course you are. Check-in was taken care of ahead of time, and you take advantage of the extra time before the assembly begins to canvas the school, noting some important landmarks as you go. The nurse's office, empty for now. The library. Some kind of academy store that might be useful later. Before you can locate the club rooms, the announcement rings out that it's time for the welcoming ceremonies to begin. You still end up being roughly in the middle of the pack for arrivals, as it seems nobody else particularly wants to be at this ceremony either.
Fifteen words into the Principal's bloviating and it's obvious why.
...the idle chatter of the students around you isn't much better.
You end up slipping out of the auditorium slightly before the scheduled end of the ceremony, swinging back around to complete your brief exploratory tour of Gekkoukan. You find the club rooms, but nothing immediately jumps out at you - and as a new student, you expect it'll be a little while before you could join one anyway.
Tuesday, April 7
Afternoon
Toriumi-sensei, your homeroom and Composition teacher, insists on having you introduce yourself to Class 2-F as the new transfer student. So much for a low profile. Worse yet, this is the only notable thing that happens during homeroom.
You're glad you took the opportunity ahead of time to scout out the main building, because your hopes of slipping out quietly as the bell rung are quickly crushed under the foot of a lanky looking boy in a baseball cap.
"'Sup, dude?!" So loud. "I'm Junpei Iori. Nice to meet ya!"
Iori-san transferred here three years ago, and apparently wanted to check up on you to make sure you weren't freaking out on your first day. You file the information away accordingly and nod politely. He looks like he's about to say something else - perhaps quip about how you're not much of a talker, but he's interrupted by Takeba-san sighing loudly and pointedly in his direction.
"At it again, huh? I swear, you'll talk to anyone if they'll listen. Did you ever think you might be bothering someone?"
"Huh? But I was just bein' friendly..."
"If you say so." Takeba-san sounds unconvinced. "Anyway, I just came by to make sure your first day went well."
"Um, hello? Did you forget I'm in this class, too? C'mon, lemme in on the fun!"
Takeba-san fixes Iori-san with a disapproving look. He ignores it in favor of grabbing a shovel. "By the way, do you two know each other or something? The whole school's abuzz with talk of a mysterious transfer student. C'mon, gimme the dirt!"
"Ugh… Could you just cut it out? I hate dealing with rumors like that. I mean, I'm used to it, but he just got here, you know? Don't you feel bad, spreading rumors like that?"
Like a desert mirage, you can see the flickers of memory play out before you, overlaid on the current scene. Arguments just like this, in a classroom just like this, between Yuzu and Atsuro... your best friends. Feelings of longing wash over you, mixing with the ever-present feeling of discontent. Is this really okay?
You don't say anything, and you're not really looking at anything either, and Takeba-san mercifully decides to break off. Something about the archery team, and warning Iori-san not to spread any rumors.
Iori-san says something about coming to him if you have any problems as he turns to leave also, but you don't really hear him. You don't make any immediate moves to leave, either.
It's fine to just take a few minutes to reminisce.
Tuesday, April 7
Evening
You decide to take a more circuitous route back to the dorm than is strictly necessary. Tatsumi Port Island looks magnificent under the light of the setting sun.
That Takeba-san and Kirijo-sempai are waiting for your arrival isn't particularly surprising. You ignore them in favor of heading directly to your room.
Sickly green hues tint the city beneath a menacing moon.
Puddles of blood dot the streets. Grotesque blobs of malevolence prowl around...
Where these streets should be filled with people, only glowing coffins stand instead.
In the midst of this macabre scene stands a pale shirtless man. He strides through the coffins with a revolver at his hip. His future victim waits unknowingly in a coffin that won't protect them from this.
To his left, a woman in a gothic lolita costume. To his right, a man with a briefcase.
Overhead, a black butterfly flits through darkness, landing on the shoulder of the pale man.
The butterfly is staring through you.
The nightmare shifts. You can't make much of anything out in the chaos. Our game continues. Wednesday, April 8
Morning
You wake up in a cold sweat. What was that dream about...?
Best to push it out of your mind for now. After all, today is your first real day of classes.
[] It's best to arrive early, work diligently, and overcome your feelings of trepidation by channeling that energy into study.
[] There's no rush. If you're not late, you're early, right? Take a more circuitous route to get to school, maybe stop for an extended breakfast on the way. You'll get there when you get there.
[] You're not really feeling it. Might as well go somewhere else.
- [] Where to? (Write-in.)
And, is there anything in particular you'd like to do after school? You may choose up to two, or as few as none.
[] Explore more of Tatsumi Port Island.
[] Explore more of Iwatodai City.
[] Get to work on bringing your kitchen up from "theoretically usable" to "actively used."
[] Maybe try just a little bit harder to connect with Takeba-san and Iori-san?
[] Try calling your old friends. You haven't spoken with them since you left...
[] Something else? (Write-in.)
Things are going to be a bit more crazy if Philemon considers coming out to guide us being important enough to do personally, cause that also means Nyarly-chan can act just as much.

That's great, but I don't know about P1 and P2 at all, except Philemon embodiment of good, nyarlotonguetwister embodiment of bad. Uhh, not to make you do another info dump or to be rude, I mean, this doesn't mean anything right now

My manifestation of the Crawling Chaos can't be this cute!
This is very much not the canon Persona 3 universe or timeline, and things are going to get very crazy very quickly once we get past our first few days as an Ordinary High School Student. I will say this whole set of tutorial posts helped me to the extent that if I had tried to massively condense everything into an intro post it would still not be done and I'd never be satisfied with it, but forcing things out on a one-or-two-votes-at-a-time basis is preventing me from getting too caught up in my own head. We're almost there, which is a thing I have to keep telling myself more than I have to keep posting it, haha.
Also I forgot to add timestamps into the last two updates. I just did that. It's the morning of April 8th, game-year. The first major story battle is set to occur during the Dark Hour of April 9th, so we have two more ordinary high school days. This is going to be one of those things I'm bad at. Feel free to yell at me when I forget them again.

There will be a proper informational post on them later once we're properly introduced and/or major character bios for them.
In the meantime, it'll suffice to just mention that Philemon and Nyarlathotep are exceptionally powerful denizens of the Collective Unconscious who are engaged in a game with each other. The terms of this game are to see whether humans can become enlightened beings by rising above their nature, or if they'll give in to base instincts and utterly destroy themselves.

So, uh, I think everyone who was going to vote already has. Just in case that's not true, a quick heads up that voting is now closed. You produced a 4-4 tie for the second "spend time on this today" choice but luckily for all of us you ended up with enough time to knock out three tasks, so it's fine!
I really wanted to have the next update out today (by which I mean "4 or 5 hours ago") and that's obviously not going to happen. It'll happen tomorrow, I promise! In the meantime, please feel free to look at the (somewhat lacking but will grow as we find more stuff to do) list of interesting places I've edited into the third post and second Informational threadmark of this thread.
