Okay, so I'm going to give you the next update within the next week, I'm just posting here to warn you, that it's going to get weird. How weird, you ask? "An entire update written in dactylic hexameter"-weird, is my answer.

So I hope you're ready for some Iliadic poetry.

Because you're getting some Iliadic poetry.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

*performs happy dance*

I like it when quests I read go with different update formats.

So, I thought I'd post what Manus shared on PoC/PoI's Discord Server.

Say Manus, what would Glory + Shame have gotten us?

ManusDomine

a cultural conflict

it could have turned out in three ways

a): you reconcile them and get a super-cool culture about warriors adopting symbolic, ceremonial identities with their masks, earning great glory in battle as themselves, but being ritually shamed in their masks which are already considered demons anyways

b): you do not reconcile them, the assembly of the warriors becomes a brawl and a bunch of them die, it's considered very shameful

c): you do not reconcile them, about half the warriors leave in disgust, they return later to plague you, having perhaps founded their own tribe or eaten some other tribe

Verse

The conclave of the Blooded proceeded with great skill, on part of Twining River, who argued skillfully and with great power in his voice. For his argument was simple, that the slaying of a human being - another warrior - is a great deed indeed. To slay a man skilled in combat and bearing in his hands a weapon is a demonstration of high martial virtue, for such a man is unlike any beast. His soul is of fire, and his hands are for the slaying of men. This is to be embraced! To be lived in glory! Only the man who embraces the blood that stains his hands in war can find glory in the deaths of others, and only the father that gives to their sons who find glory in war, the greatest share of food, shall see his son be a strong warrior. Otherwise, they commit great wrongness against the order of the world, for just as spirit is above man, so is the warrior above those who are not.

This was convincing to you, and of all the Blooded, who have become your brothers, you named him to be the cleverest and said to him, "O, Twining River who has spoken convincingly and skillfully at the conclave of all those who are Blooded in the battle against the people who live by the river, I name you as Fox-Tongue", and hence he was Twining River Fox-Tongue, and the Blooded knew that he was a man of persuasive skill and to respect him for his tongue, that was blessed by the spirit Fox. Just as you once had been named, you too had given a name as proof of his prowess, and he thanked you deeply for this acknowledgement of his skill, for you are the first among equals, in war and on the hunt in equal measure.

As the Kin to Air arrive, a joyous throng headed by the boy named Stone who had become a man recently, wearing a wolf-pelt cloak and a shield not unlike they who were worn by the Godlanders, it comes to be that you assemble the wood for a great fire. You surround it with a lesser and a greater circle of logs and stones, and the women and children from the fishing people are seated in the innermost circle, except for those who are taken by one of the Blooded and seated with them who seek wives or lovers among them. You too, take a woman from the fishing people, of dark hair and lighter skin than what is common among the Kin to Air, and eyes as clear as water. She is named Ash-thohe Kush-uy among her people, which you find tiresome and hard to say, so you name her Beautiful Ash, for to you, she is as hard and powerful as the ash in your spear, and her face is greatly beautiful. She is without child, and that suits you well, although her downcast eyes and aversion of your touch brings you frustration and sadness. What shall you do to make her speak to you? Another of the Blooded indicates with mirth in his voice that the sacking and burning of their camp and leading all the men away in chains was a misstep in your courtship, and you send him a deadly glare.

At this, she laughs bitterly, saying to you, "O, wild man of the plains, bearing spear and sitting with the maiden you would wed, are your people possessed of no shame? Does the suffering of those who are my sisters in spirit, if not in blood, and their children bring you enjoyment? Is the burning of houses and the enslavement of men a mark of courtship in your traditions? Forcing my hand, you have said to me "marry me and be my wife", with your spear in hand and given me a name in your evil tongue, which I have learned to speak from the laughter of your blood-stained companions, and you ask now "love me and be my wife", seated still with spear in hand and sitting among your blood-stained companions! Truly you are of a shameless people."

This brings you anger, and you barely restrain yourself from striking her across the face for such an insult to your honour, remembering only the face of the priestess who was promised Lugalkam as the camp burned and blazed, and smoke reached the heavens, as ash and dead bodies fed the spirits below. Then you say to her in fury, "O, woman of the hill by the river, sitting by my side and speaking my tongue, how can you speak such words? Was it not I who had you be spared, and your children preserved? And was it not I who turned away the blades of the Godlanders? And was it not I who was merciful and had you to be taken with us, who are the Kin to Air and people of a distant valley, rather than leave you in the wild to die and become pickings for wolves and ravens?"

At this, she looks at you in anger, and speaks in indignation and mockery. Taking from her hair, a piece of jewelry made of vitreous enamel and strange metal, and a beautiful stone, to let the dark locks fall around her face like a waterfall. She speaks as such, "O, you who are merciful like the wolf that does not eat spoils, keep control of your wicked tongue and watch your evil words. Saying to me, "I have been merciful, for you have not been slain with your husband" and asking me for thankfulness and forgiveness, you mock his memory and disgrace me for speaking to you in less than the tones of a wife scorned. The extent of your mercy is such as the Great Man who does not take everything that he can, in aiding the shield-bearing men of distant lands, you have shown the mercy of a murderer who said to himself, "I shall not stain my hands with blood" after casting his enemy to the ground!"

At this, you are silenced, and your Blooded companions laugh at you, as you sulk at the spiteful words of the woman whom you have named Beautiful Ash. You decide that after the assembled gathering of the Kin to Air, you shall do something else, with men who understand and can speak as you. Then you shall find joy, and surely enjoy your new wife later, she will find reason to listen to your words eventually, such is the way of things that wife listens to husband in counsel, just as man shall listen to wife in counsel. She is yet unwise to your ways, so surely she is simply ignorant of the scope of your mercy.

You Are Very Angry, What Will You Do?
This vote has secret effects.

[ ] You Shall Hunt - Tired of the harping of Beautiful Ash, you have decided to instead go hunting. Gathering a number of companions, you will set out to hunt the greatest beast that this hilly land has to offer, and then you will show your ungrateful harpy of a wife exactly how merciful you were, when she sees the ease with which you lay down prey. You will also see more of this strange land which you have come to.

[ ] You Shall Fletch - Interested in the shields of the Godlanders, you have decided to attempt to make your own. The wicker they are made of does not seem too complicated to recreate, and you saw the great effects that they offered the Godlanders. Recreating such a shield could be greatly helpful to both yourself, and the Kin to Air as a whole. If anything, it will only serve to heighten the status of the Blooded further, along with your own.

[ ] You Shall Explore - Several structures of the fishing people are still extant, which you do not know the meaning of. As much as their defeat was easy, you admit that they were a clever people, and built many fascinating contraptions. Both the sea-going vessels they seem to have bound to the water with thick threads, and the wooden fishing mechanism upstreams are curious to you, and you shall attempt to see if you can figure out their working, and perhaps if you too can imitate them.

[ ] You Shall Court - Strictly against all your wisdom, you decide that you will spend the time after this to talk to your newly acquired wife. Perhaps, it is time for you to swallow your pride and consider whether it is she or you who are without wisdom. Perhaps you have treated her unfairly?

However, first you shall sing of greatness and glory in battle, so the Kin to Air can understand the great skills of the Blooded, and the new glory you shall find in battle with the peoples you will undoubtedly encounter. The Kin to Air shall grow to be a name of fear and respect, of that you will make sure, setting no price that is too high.

You stand in the middle of the circles, and let the fire illuminate you from below as the sun illuminates the earth from above. Then you spread your arms, wearing your mask and holding a spear in one hand and shield taken from a dead man of the Godlanders in the other, and singing in a deep tone, you say:

"Chant to us, Air, woman,
child of home and distant,
manifold valleys, warm.
Chant to us, Lugalkam,
and his bright, sharp, icy
blade that made doom for foes.
Chant to us, Fire who breaks
their many foes, with his might,
saying "flinch, fear and flee
Air's mighty kin, who burn the
great tents of stone by the
water bright, and pelt them
who live under ceilings of
stone and straw, through missiles,
spear and flint.""

Then came another of the Blooded, wearing a cloak of wolven pelt and a long and dark beard, to the fire and sang of his own:

"Coming from those tracts of
land that Air's mighty kin, foe-slayer,
man-breaker, Fire went to
see for his own vision,
lands of hills, found riverside,
people and their homes by that
flowing river, called the
Tributary, such titled
being that its water,
flowed life-giving and
full of essence, nourishing
valleys and rivers, and
the people who lived there."

The man was replaced by a third of the Blooded, wearing a fox-hat and having hung the bones of dead animals over his shoulders in a string made of tendon, who sung:

"Here, he met powerful,
Man-leading, cloak-clothed
Lugalkam, wielding his
spear, counter shield-arm,
held sinisterly, powerfully.
Near his side, stood his men:
Standing two score of men,
shields resting, spears lifted,
helmet-clad, sworn to their
lord called Lugalkam.
Lugalkam voiced then
"Thee warrior, Fire of the
people from the lowlands far
off distant lands of no
name given, Fire of the…""

And so, the singing continues well into the night, fading down as the fire dies and the night becomes darker. Eventually, the time for sleep comes, and the circles are simply widened, with an additional, third circle encircling the two smaller ones. In this utmost circle, the Blooded and those hunters who stayed behind sleep, and take turns watching the night, ever ready to alert their sleeping companions and rise to the fearless defense of the Kin to Air.

As night becomes morning, and a golden sunrise behind pale, puffy clouds lights up the earth below, the Kin to Air rise, and the honoured grandmothers convene to discuss what they shall do now. Uniquely, you are allowed inside to watch their deliberations, although not to speak yourself, unless allowed to do so by one. They handle grievances and discuss matters of marriage and blood, especially in relation to the new additions to the tribe. Finally, they discuss the way forward, and what the Kin to Air shall do now.

What do the Honoured Grandmothers Decide?
This vote will affect the future of the Great Journey.

[ ] Keep to the Journey - The elders decide that the only proper decision could be to travel forwards and keep to the Great Journey. You shall go westwards, and then you shall go northwards and northwards until you can walk no longer, as the fire once revealed to the honoured grandmothers. As the ancestors of the ancestors said, so must it be.

[ ] Venture Deeper Into the Hills - It is a strange land you have come to. Here, men and women worship strange beings in the river, and build permanent tents of clay. They capture eels in tapestries of disparate strings with holes in them, and they speak in strange, guttural tongues. You shall go deeper into their lands and discover what secrets they hold.

[ ] Seek the Land of the Gods - Your greatest allies have been the so-called Godlanders and you shall follow in the tracks that they have left. You will travel all the way until you reach the this land of theirs, where their gods walk the land, and they build vast camps behind great walls to keep all who are outside, outside, and all who are inside, inside.

[ ] Write-In - You shall go into another direction. Name a rough direction the Kin to Air shall go as secondary vote to this write-in.

AN: As a result of this update, the Kin to Air have acquired a new, warlike addition to their Values and a new Myth: Tale of Fire.

Bride kidnapping is a proud and noble tradition. So it makes no sense to pick this, since we would be admitting to having done something wrong. We haven't done anything wrong, just innocent Nomad Stuff. :V

indeed random member, the ancient civilizations are free of guilt and blame, for they were merely products of their time, t'is only fair for fire to kidnap brides and blame her for not bowing to his merest wish

Prideful you are, Fire-Slays-Many! Is it any surprise your bride to be is your match in pride and thrice that in scathing wit?

YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

This update was great and I want more into my brain mouth.

[X] You Shall Hunt - Tired of the harping of Beautiful Ash, you have decided to instead go hunting. Okay so why this? Because I think it has a legitimate chance for us to get the waifu.

To explain more. Currently Fire is Very Angry, thus trying to make something will be hampered by frustration. Anger clouds judgement and fine thought. He's intelligent enough that I expect something, but it will not be a happy creation. Exploring is of little use now, since we have few people who will want to explain and just by having an angry man look at it ain't going to get much, though again it won't be nothing, and further we are moving on soon and leaving much of these people behind because we must.

Courting is, out of all of them, the one I consider the one most likely to go badly. This is because of a couple of factors. One is that Fire is Very Angry and thus I expect him to some how harm his wife. Fire is not a man which has been taught to swallow his pride, just look at his reaction here. Further, the choices we took in the update before this are quiiiiiiite counter to this vote choice. It is a U-Turn on a previous decision we already made, and places pressure on Fire at a point where he is already unstable. Since I like Ash-thohe Kush-uy quite a bit and think her ribbing completely justified, I'd rather not have her tale be marked by whatever terrible reaction from Fire I see this choice leading to. Furthermore when I see that roasting from his brothers, I see a dare to regain his role of top hunter[hyper-masculine postion] with the implied requirement that he get it back. From Ash-thohe Kush-uy I see a dare to prove himself to her, a test of "Why should I call you husband?" and that a clever man would see it as so. And thus, that if we can prove Fire's worth to Ash-thohe Kush-uy then this relationship can possibly improve.

Thus a great hunt against a great beast. Now this is of course risky, so Fire could die, in which case I'd actually be happy with that result, because Ash-thohe Kush-uy basically got her revenge tangentially, though it is balanced by the issue that she is kinda disconnected from the Kin again and must associate with her friends in the women and children.

So yeah, If we take Courting I expect one of them to be dead, and Fire decried as an idiot in his legend. And I'd really rather not have that happen. :V

This is just sense, don't counter the edicts of the elders, when they are literally our source of authority and their position is already wearing away before our eyes.

As much as I want shields, being angry does not help when doing slow and monotonous work like shaping wicker. It is better to vent Fire-Defeats-Many's frustrations in a hunt, that will also let them remember that the warriors are not only for murder, but for providing for others.
