Lone AI Ship Quest

Okay, so... Ran some numbers. If we go in guns blazing, shields up, and FTL activated for the Athens (since I got the impression that that was a part of their fighting style)... We're left with 80 CPU. I'm not sure what effect that would have on our decryption efforts, given that I imagine the battle won't take an entire month, but... It's something to consider. Regardless, it is an option. I suspect the combat would work more with the FTL going on and off as necessary, but that would still represent a significant computer load.

So! Provisional plans:

[X] Plan 1: Fight!
-- Go in guns blazing. These guys are clearly hostile, and they may well come after you if you stick around much longer. Besides, those resources will look better in your shiny new cargo ship than in their grubby old mining vessel.
---- Minimal/No Decryption during the fight: Can't afford to not have computing cycles when you need them.
---- Target the comms and engines/drive cores (as possible)! They might have friends. Don't let them bring them in.
---- Keep the Jonas and Contessa back. These aren't fighting ships, they have no place being in close combat.
---- Spend the rest of the month harvesting, repairing, and looking at nearby star systems. Nothing stands out as needing to be built.

[X] Plan 2: Maybe we just got off on the wrong foot?
-- Move in close to Group 3, but with our offensive weapons powered down. Try and hail the mining vessel.
---- If they seem to be attacking, enact Plan 1.

[X] Plan 3: Ping the weird thing!
-- Who needs to pick a fight when there is science to be done? That weird object needs investigating.
---- Use the survey drone to try and send a message to it. It (probably) wouldn't hurt to see if it can talk--and if it gets angry, hey, it's just a survey drone.
---- If that doesn't work, send an assault ship in to investigate (with the FTL primed and ready). Give it a good old shot-over-the-bow to try and elicit a response.
---- Have the entire fleet ready to run if it gets angry at our prodding.

Research Priorities (in descending order):
Unknown Data Bank 1 - 500 CPU
Unknown Tiny Module - 80 CPU
Unknown Module 1 - 150 CPU
Unknown Module 3 - 150 CPU
Unknown Fighter Craft - 100 CPU

Which ever one gains traction. My planning skills are awful.

Plan 2 transforms into plan 1 if needed. Plan 3 looks like it could go first. Ping, then hail, then fight if needed.

I kinda feel like attacking, it could get us some loot and they attacked us first. They could very well be the guys that attacked our original ship.

Attacking could be a decent option but even if they did attack the ship originally diplomacy could be the best first attempt.

I give diplomacy VERY low odds considering this turns results. Also the GM seemed to hint it was pure hostility there.

And we do lose our surprise attack for this diplomacy attempt.

Since you seem to be moving in the direction of initiating contact the plan needs a bit more detail. Will you be using FTL to head there so it doesn't take a month or more, what formation will you be using, will you take the caterpillar with you or send it else where(such as group 1).

Also on the Decoding you can put a full list as if you were out of combat and all that happens is that it starts once combat is over. Every project will have to beat a DC with a 1d100 (an extremely low DC at that) or it will be partially completed and have a new cost for the next turn(likely only 1-5 CPU at most other then the database one which will just go up for its last month). Also after the combat portion of the turn is over you will have a choice of [ ] continue plan, and [ ] make new plan. though if you change the build list it gets its own rolls for the turn instead of the original list.

I didn't put up a build plan because there was nothing in particular that caught my attention (other than the platform, but until we know what's at group 4 and have some way to defend it, I don't see the point). Anyone else have any thoughts?

Oh, something I meant to ask earlier: for multi-turn decryption projects, do we have the option of doubling or tripling up on them to complete them faster, or are we stuck with the stated number of turns?

You can Try just throwing more CPU at it. But success will involve dice, though even if it doesn't succeed if you throw extra at it it will decrease the requirements from then on. The posted requirements are what Will happen in X amount of time, and will only ever fail if its a corrupted file to begin with, or there is a combat turn interrupt.

[X] Attack the ship(s) at group 3.
-[X] Use only the Athens class ships.
-[X] Use the FTL drive to jump as close as safely possible.
-[X] Prioritize attacks in the following order when possible: any unnoticed combat ships, the mining vessel, the platforms, the fighters.

[X] If the attack succeeds and the situation is safe move the Jonas and Caterpillar to the belt with their FTL drive.
-[X] Search the wreckage for any information or usable objects.
-[X] Then start resource gathering and build:
--[X] Micro Manufactory Module Mk1 and 3 Collector Drones.
---[X] Install the module and drones on the Caterpillar.
--[X] Long Life Sensor Platform Mk1 with 2 Collector Drones.
---[X] Deploy the platform with its drones.
---[X] It is set to maintain survey drones in the system and communicate any notable events in the future.
--[X] As many Athens class ships as possible this month.

[X] If the attack fails move any remaining ships to group 1.
-[X] Then start resource gathering and build:
--[X] Micro Manufactory Module Mk1 and 3 Collector Drones.
---[X] Install the module and drones on the Caterpillar.
--[X] As many Athens class ships as possible here.

[X]Research Priorities (in descending order):
-[X]Unknown Data Bank 1 - 500 CPU
-[X]Unknown Module 1 - 150 CPU
-[X]Unknown Module 3 - 150 CPU
-[X]Unknown Medium Ship 4? - 120 CPU
-[X]Unknown Tiny Module - 80 CPU

Not sure about how much CPU we have for research with this plan so I'm not including that right now.
Unless I've missed something, with shields, defensive weapons, manufactories, and construction drones running, we'll still have over 1000 CPU available outside of fighting. Assuming we lose no ships, of course. In that case, we have 1094 CPU, and each Athens is worth 115.

Edit: forgot to include the module CPU costs.

Two more questions:
1) Can we spin off copies of ourselves? i.e., if we find a way to build new AI cores, or find one without an AI installed, can we install a copy of ourself in there, or does a new AI have to be built from the ground up? (I may be planning to push us towards being a mini-Sobernost)
2) Can we pre-perform the FTL calculations from a third point? Say, if we went back to salvage wreckage of our old ship, could we lay in a course to be activated immediately if we detected a threat upon arrival?

1) All AI cores must be specially built, its in the tech tree you have some steps between whats unlocked and making new cores.

2) You can set contingency orders like that when you want. I have the locations of some other nearby systems set up in my notes but not what they contain so you don't have many known choices at the moment.

So writing up turn Full Nothingness plan.
