Level-Locked [Gamer/Multi-Cross]

Optimizing 3
Another fairly short chapter, but it had a natural endpoint for a moment.

I stood back, letting the actual teachers take care of the students while fiddling with my phone. I turn out that since Negima timeline is some fifteen years or so ahead of my timeline, my Samsung Galaxy 7 actually has a full Paranoid Android OS and numerous system hacks built for it. After saving all my data to a dropbox equivalent., and revamping my phone's system, I started experimenting with what I could load on the phone, the first things being a hack to essentially get free wifi signal and data. I also had a free FM radio app, a few games to keep my hands busy, and a bunch of new little hacker tools.

Fun stuff.

I Downloaded a few guidebooks and a couple maps of Kyoto. As I finished downloading the annotated maps, I noticed the students finally falling in line and heading on the train, and joined the back of the crowd, keeping an eye out for stragglers.

As the crowd got on the train I walked to Negi;s side, the last of his students filing on.

"That's all. Yeah?"

"Oh, Corvus-san! Yes, this is all the students coming," he said, a slight slump to his shoulders.

"Any absentees?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at my young superiors mood shift.

"A few… Both Evangeline-san and Chachamaru-san are staying here," he said, slumping forwards slightly.

"Hmm. Sad to see they can't come. That's the... young blonde girl, and the taller green haired one, yeah?"

Negi blinks and nods.

"Alright, just wanted to double check I knew who you were talking about."

A few minutes pass as we make our way on the train, me falling back to let Negi, and Shizuka (who was sorting seating out) stand to address the class. I take up a position next to the door to our compartment duffel bag to my side and back to the wall.

"Alright, everyone! The 15th Annual School trip is about to begin! Please make the most of these five days and four nights!"

I started tuning the standard safety speech out, only to blink and reflexively snap a hand out and pull Negi aside when the door opened and a waitress with a food cart came barreling past him.

"Pay attention numbskull," I muttered as Negi regained his balance.

It was a little over half an hour into our train ride. most of which had been spent relaxing and reading off my hone. Shizuka finally interrupted my reading and I was quickly conscripted to perform a walk down the aisle when I saw something that brought a smile to my face.

"Magic the gathering?" I mused, looking at the familiar colored cards.

"Oh, do you play, sensei?" A student (… gonna say Haruna?) asked, smiling from behind her glasses.

"Yeah, I do, but my decks a bit out of style. Not sure if it's even tournament legal anymore, it's been awhile since I played." I rubbed the back of my head and reached into my jacket pocket, pulling out (of my inventory) a small black and blue metal deck case. "Anyone up for a challenge?"

Haruna's eyes seemed to flash and she looked across the table at Yue. "Yue, you're our best player, wanna give sensei a run for his money?"

Yue blinked and looked at her recently won game. "Sure."

Soon all the other games have stopped, all eyes were drawn to the deathmatch between me and Yue. I have to admit, she was good. A red/green ramp deck, well balanced and vicious in execution.

But I play blue/black Infect. (which apparently has gone out of style? That sucks, I wanted to update with new cards.). She tapped five to swing with an unfamiliar burn spell, and I counterspelled, before taking advantage. It was down to the wire, I had 4 health left, and she had 18 health, and 8 poison counters. Her monsters, once massive threats were both sickly now, a 2/1 and a 2/2 instead of the 9/8 and 10/10 she had originally played. I drew a card and grinned.

"I'll start by playing a Steady Progress, which proliferates and destroys your 2/1 and adds one more poison counter to you, and then I'll draw a card." I drew, and the two girls looking over my shoulders, the twins Fuuka and Fumika, both groaned, and I grinned. "And here we go. I play Spread the Sickness, killing your last monster, and taking the win with the tenth poison counter."

"Good game."

After disentangling myself from offers of a rematch, I continued on my walk, and looked around, making sure everyone was fine with a few uses of Observe.

It was only a minute or two later when I heard a scream from where I had just left, and looked back. suddenly there were frogs everywhere, Negi in the middle of it. I stepped out the car and started down towards the back of the train, knife drawn and held concealed by my hand and sleeve, my focus flickered, letting Eyes of the Occult activate.

I was two compartments down the train when I slowed and took a pause. I figured it would be a moment for the frog situation to resolve, so if I'm right… There! A small white and black bird shikigami came speeding past me, a letter in its grasp. I leaned back to let it go past, Acceleration and Eyes of the Occult flaring as I took in the magical signature that wrapped around the shikigami, which also flowed to… the waitress with the food cart? Oh.

OH.

Well then, I thought, narrowing my gaze and stepping back as Negi ran past, I stared down the mage from Kyoto.

This is something I didn't expect.

Fun.

When I saw this had updated, I was confused as to which story it was. I thought it was the one where the MC killed a crazy Hobo and befriended an Eldritch abomination, but it was this one instead. Nice!

HAVE A CHAPTER. expect updates for this story to be sporadic, short and irregular. sorry about that but its just how my muse is acting.

Huh, I appear to have found the first antagonist, early in the Arc. First things first, I cast an Observe.

Amagasaki Chigusa
Lvl: 61
"Kansai Magic Association Adept"
"Onmyōdō Charm Specialist"
An onmyōdō charm user from the Kansai Magic Association, Chigusa is currently trying to prevent Negi from giving his letter to the chief of Kansai Magic Association, because she does not want relations between the Kansai and Kantō Magic Association to improve. Chigusa bears a grudge against Western mages because her parents were killed in the great magic war that both Eastern and Western mages fought in twenty years ago.
Emotions: Amusement, Focused, Annoyance, Hate

Oh goodie. A Summoner on a revenge kick. Expect lots of annoying minions, a few larger tanks to block for her, and traps. Joy. Now, Do I confront or do I play the subtle game… Negi's on his way back soon. Let's go with subtle. I want to be able to track her... Ah, sympathy should do it. I just need a blood sample.

I slid a hand into my pocket, opening my inventory and pulling a small plastic vial. I sighed and started heading towards the girl starting to get up off the floor. I sent a flicker of Osteokinesis through my hand, twisting a very small. sharp and hollow point of a piece of bone from one of my metacarpals into my hand. I reached down and helped her stand up, my hand pressing against her arm tightly to steady her, and distract from the makeshift hypo from being noticed.

"Sorry about that miss. Negi can be… excitable." I gave a grin, another flicker of Osteokinesis pulling my bone out slightly from the hollow of the needle, making negative pressure in the compartment and pulling a small amount of blood from her before I let go. "You okay?"

She grinned, (Cute, shy, a bit sexy, and very very Fake) "Ah, sorry sir. No, I'm fine." And there, a flicker of annoyance and displeasure, probably Negi and Setsuna just faced off with a destroyed Shikigami off. "Do you want anything from the cart?" she turned to face me, but I saw her eyes flickered towards Negi's exit earlier.

Hmmm… "Could I get a Towel, please? I expect one of the girls to spill something sooner or later, pays to be prepared." I chuckled and rubbed my free hand through my hair, taking care to put the other hand with the blood sample in my pocket, transferring the blood to the vial, and the vial to my inventory.

Gotcha, bitch.

She handed off a towel and I thanked her, before walking back towards the girls. I figured we had less than half an hour till we hit Kyoto. Tonight was the kissing game, probably, and then we have the kidnapping to go along with that. Which means I need to make a blood tracker sooner, rather than later. I have a spare compass I can cannibalize, but it's gonna be sketchy. I sigh and glance back just before entering the car with the girls. Setsuna was coming down the Aisle behind me.

I look at her and nod, holding the door for her to pass.

"Nice Interception with the Shikigami by the way," I mutter as I follow behind her and take my seat next to the doorway and passes me. She jolts and looks my way, but we're already in view of the rest of the class, and that keeps her from asking questions.

In the meantime, I cast an Observe on her as well.

Setsuna Sakurazaki
Lvl: 58
"Silent Bodyguard"
"Shinmei-ryū Master"
Setsuna is a half-demon hanyō from Kyoto, sent to Mahora Academy to be the guardian of Konoka Konoe, the daughter of the Kansai Magic Association leader. Although friends with Konoka from a young age, she ends up distancing herself from her due to a childhood accident. Setsuna is a master of Shinmei-ryū swordsmanship and is skilled in close quarters combat.
Emotions: Shock, Curiosity, Sadness, Confusion.

About what I was expecting. Interesting that she's stronger then- wait. I watched Negi walk by and I checked his level.

Negi Springfield
Lvl: 59

Oh, Come the fuck on. when I was in my late forty levels, it took me a day or two of grinding monsters, or a couple quests, to level up. Can this kid just jump a half dozen levels? What the hell.

I sigh and settle into watching the kids get ready to go. My stuff is all in my duffle bag or inventory as it is. so all I have to really do is relax and wait for us to get there.

It's not long before we pull into Kyoto station. I help the others herd the students off the train and a block and a half away, to the hotel, we're staying in. I end up my own single room, while Negi and Shizune Sensei shared a room. Soon after dropping my bag off, I ended up following Negi and the other teachers as we went to chaperone the classes on the first of the tours, heading to Kiyo-Mizu Temple. I keep an eye out and suddenly get a bad feeling.

Fuck. Eyes Of Occult flicker on behind my glasses as I look around, and there it is, hanging in the air. a faint level of magic, Similar to that of Chigasa's. No, it is hers, a different type of spell.

I focus and I can pick up the feel of the magic. it's... tricky, but not malevolent. Feels like a fae prankster I had to deal with back home. Joy.

Something in my thoughts click. My eyes travel from the magic to the girls, to the temple around us.

As it dawns on me, I can't help but feel a horrifying sense of realization drop, words slipping out under my breath.

"Oh god. Its an Escort Quest."

Thos was gonna suck.
