Let's Play Every Final Fantasy Game In Order Of Release [Now Playing: Final Fantasy IX]

Don't forget that your version of the game is literally cursed, so that's gonna be fun to account for in your final judgement, and then there is the issue of whether the quality of translation should reflect on the game or not.
If someone has any clue why my version's audio is broken while even other people using the Steam version don't have that issue I'd love to hear it btw

It's gonna be, huh, interesting to do my usual "assessment of the game compared to its direct predecessor" round-up post for FF7 and having to try and distinguish what are VI and VII's respective "inherent merits," so to speak, versus what is "the Steam version of VII is effectively the 1998 original in digital form while VI's nostalgia remake came out literally last year."
Will you even be able to remember what FF VI was like when you finish FF VII in three more years?

hiss

It was an abomination! A perversion of Lloyd Alexander's beautiful work! WE HATESES IT!

Though if you're gonna talk about The Black Cauldron movie not being accurate to Chronicles of Prydain, then you kinda also have to talk about Prydain not being accurate to actual Welsh mythology (e.g. Arawn wasn't a villain at all in the myths). Granted, that's partly inevitable when adapting mythology for a child audience, e.g., you can't exactly have Percy Jackson bringing up that his dad's a rapist.

It is a rare example of Disney adaptation being darker than the original though. Only other case I can think of is Pinocchio, where unlike the book most of its villains got off scot-free.

And yes, fully aware of the hypocrisy of talking about mythical accuracy in a thread about Final Fantasy. Or just the hypocrisy of talking about 'mythical accuracy'

I'm not sure where/when Xenogears belongs in this discourse, all I know is that's the gateway to trying to get Omi to review the Xenosaga saga.

Super Mario RPG is the predecessor to FFVII in terms of minigame hell.
I don't remember any of the (non-optional) minigames in Super Mario RPG being that bad?

Also, if we're suggesting other games to add to the pile, Skies of Arcadia and Golden Sun, anyone? :D

You people, the reason I said Chrono Trigger is FF7's predecessor is that it was made by Square and falls in between FF6 and FF7 chronologically.

SoA, Golden Sun, and Super Mario RPG were, you know, not made by Square and while Xenogears was and is in fact name-checked in FF7 it came out afterwards.

Let's not be too silly here, yeah?

Ah, for most of that, I wasn't aware; sorry.

However, as far as I know, Super Mario RPG in fact was made by Square. Wikipedia also lists them as the developer, at least.

Super Mario RPG was made by Square, it came out just between Chrono Trigger and FFVII.

Yeah, to be entirely fair to Super Mario RPG a lot of its minigames both aren't all that bad, and don't really have a fail state of "you lost the minigame? TRY AGAIN FOR SIX HOURS" so much as missing out on rewards (which are often just Frog Coins that you can technically farm anyways).

Heck, some might argue that failing one particular minigame and getting a kiss from Bowser instead of Peach is totally worth :V

?????

It's even been a big thing for a long time that part of the reason we never got Mario RPG ports or remakes was because Square likes to keep a stranglehold on things they have ownership with, though obviously that changed recently considering the Remake just came out.

Though yeah granted, it's not nearly as interconnected to a Final Fantasy series retrospective as say, Xenogears or Chrono Trigger is. Xenogears is to my knowledge chunks of unused Final Fantasy ideas in the first place, and Chrono Trigger would totally be a Final Fantasy game if you just slapped in some traditional elements like common enemy types. Frankly, I don't actually expect Omi to play any games for the thread outside of mainline Final Fantasies 1 through 16 that aren't direct sequels/spinoffs like X-2 and the XIII games, and maybe Final Fantasy Tactics.
