Let's Play Every Final Fantasy Game In Order Of Release [Now Finished: Final Fantasy Tactics]

I realize everyone is waiting with bated breath, and I am very excited to start FFVI, but I am forcing myself to take a few days' break so I can advance some other projects and get a breather before getting sucked up into another FF.
No worries, take your time. I'll just be here, quietly vibrating in place in anticipation. At least it'll give me time to finish up the music notes for the end of FFV, which I really should finish up before you get to the new game.

Oh, and I am totally digging out my copy of the piano book for the FFVI playthrough. I don't plan on going full music nerd for most of the soundrack, but it might be a bit fun to dig into the score a little.

I've been toying with the idea of going through the FFVI mobile port on Steam, which was gifted to me a while back but I never sat down and played through. I hear that it has the post-game extra dungeons, which I've never experienced so it might be an interesting perspective along with Omicron's playthrough.

Incidentally enjoy that one, it no longer exists.

Like, I assume if you have it they don't delete it from your library, same as I still have Dark Souls non-remastered edition even though you can no longer purchase it from Steam, but you can no longer purchase the mobile/Steam version anywhere now that the Pixel Remasters are out. These bonus dungeons are now defunct content, at least as far as legal means are concerned.

Well, the bonus dungeons are still available in the GBA versions of FFV/FFVI... but yeah there's no way to go about purchasing them firsthand anymore.

Personally, I suspect it's not even entirely a "we have a better version now with the pixel remasters", it's embarrassment at the huge backlash they got over the mobile/steam versions changing to an entirely new (and not very well fitting) art style for... no particular reason. It's one thing to touch up the sprites a bit, it's another entirely to turn everyone into moeblobs instead of keeping said sprites. So once the pixel remasters were a thing, they had an excuse to pull the other versions... even if said versions had bonus content with extra dungeons, jobs, and so on.
I can confirm, people who purchased that version of FFVI still have it in their steam library.
When it comes to steam at least, I'm pretty sure they never really pull games from your library entirely, just take them off the storefront. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dragon Age 2, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, etc... I've got a number of games you can't actually purchase anymore, but still exist on my account.

Hey, some of us have GBA cartidges.

Sometimes in cases like Dark Souls that they're just basically trying to phase out an outdated version, it's like, ok fine, and sometimes they gift you the updated one if you bought the older. Other times... My Steam library still remembers when the Castle of Illusion remake from 2013 got delisted from major platforms just three years later after release because Disney and Sega had a bitch fit about publishing rights for a year.

Though there is one last question. Is the world now one or two? Are we talking about a merged world or two separate ones again?

Well, it's certainly going to be an experience for the people of the newly reformed/saved world. Kingdoms that weren't there a few months ago are now a daily fact of life, trade and travel routes are going to be different now that there are viable stops elsewhere, and people are going to have a hard time explaining things to each other.

It's merged of course. It was only unmerged way back when to seal the void, and no part of the endgame even slightly suggested resplitting the world.
According to the terrible sequel anime, the name of the merged world is "Planet R".

Which is a stupid fucking name, but the only proper name its got so sone wikis will use it even when referring to the events covered by the game proper.

Yeah, that's just lazy. I mean, the Forgotten Realms setting used to be Abeir-Toril, and now it's two separate worlds called Abeir (inhabited by a ton of dragons) and Toril (where most of the setting happens).

You'd think they'd just merge the names of the two old worlds, or bring back the old name before it got split to destroy Enuo.

Maybe you are already aware, but if you start tomorrow you can do some funny/smart/whatever thing about playing it 'at release' due to the remaster switch version.

Speaking of which.

The Playstation/Switch ports of the Pixel Remasters are coming out with a whole bunch of new quality of life features like "disable random encounters," "double XP", "heal HP" after encounters, and so on.

Except I find no mention of any of these features also coming in a patch to the PC versions.

If it turns out these are PC-exclusive features I am going to set Squeenix HQ on fire in Minecraft.

Notably you can still purchase the 3D versions of FFIII and FFIV on Steam and you can still buy the the old FFVIII PC version even if a FFVIII Remaster also exists. So this might be true.
Now if any version of FFTactics was on purchasable on modern platforms at all it would be a lot better, but until then emulation will have to suffice.

I'm torn on whether I stay with the Pixel remasters all the way through for the bragging rights of completing the set, or playing through the 3D versions since I've heard they're a little more polished (and 3D models are more expressive than the static 2D sprites). And I'm not sure I really want to play 3 and 4 twice to get the "full" experience.

Keep in mind that the 3D versions are quite a bit challenging than the Pixel Remasters, in particular near the end.

If they don't come to PC, just use Cheat Engine.

I have terrible news.

The new features added in the Switch/Playstation version are not being added to the PC versions at this time.

I ask for privacy in this moment of great personal tragedy and mourning.

Not surprising, unfortunately; AFAIK Japanese software developers still consider the PC market some weird tiny niche vestigial thing that doesn't deserve to be catered to, and that we get any games for PC is something of a new development that they're still not all that sure is worth it.

Speaking at least for VI, it's not like this is a huge loss. Progression feels pretty good and you don't really need to grind for anything, so 2x XP only matters if you're one of those lvl99 MAX STATS type people. You can already disable encounters in game because of SPOILERS so that point will become moot. Healing after encounters...well OK that can save you a bit of time but on the other hand IMO resource management in high danger zones should matter. Quick save already eliminates a lot of the challenge, getting automatically healed up after fights would shred any leftover vestiges that were left. OTOH the easy rebuttal to that is if you don't like it don't use it so YMMV.

Yeah, the "traditional" view is that the PC is a machine for work, compared to the console (handheld, usually) as a machine for play. So software development for "serious" work stuff is decently healthy in Japan, but developing games for PC was seen as the domain of hobbyists and foreign developers.

I was under the impression this had changed (since over a decade ago), due to the current generation of devs having grown up gaming on platforms including PC, while also being old enough to be in senior management roles, but it's possible I was too optimistic.

Then again, Omicron did manage to overlevel tremendously in the process of mastering Jobs (and was glad for it), so that might be a factor.

I'd also not recommend power leveling early in FFVI because of SPOILERS. It's one of the few FF's I recall that could actually hurt you in the long run if you grind too much early.
