Legend of the Five Rings: In Service to the Emerald Throne

A Crane Concubine was Setorii's mother I think. Or Daigotsu's not sure....
No I mean I think traditionally the Hantei crown prince only marries Crane brides because of the first Hantei's huge unrequited love for his sister who was destined for someone else. :V

The crown prince or emperor marrying a non-Crane is a huge change unless I'm remembering my lore incorrectly.

So I feel this is a very symbolic gesture from each clan which makes it tough to know exactly how my clan would respond. Given who it is from I assume Crab would respond with something. My first thought was an iron flower for the Crab practicalness but that seems like a waste of time and resources so is really more a shallow gesture. Next I was thinking a flowering camellia sinensis as it would be practical as it could be made into tea, I believe I saw on the wiki tea plants grow in crab territory so is easy and locally sourced, and is an actual flower even if it is not the prettiest or best smelling flower which I think would hit many of the notes of Crab as I understand them.

Would this be a good gesture or am I off base?

I'd take the Rokugan approach to history on this.

Yes, every Hantei has married a woman of the Crane clan. However, there is no guarantee that the Sons of Heaven have only ever descended from those unions, ne? Men have their drives after all, and in the Imperial court one cannot expect the Emperor of all people to eschew the natural duty to ensure one's line.

To the Libraries!

Besides, I'm pretty sure concubines are a recognised thing in Rokugan. Their children even have certain rights, though they only get to inherit if the actual wife doesn't produce any children.

But then they won't be starving.

....we probably could work out some agreement though.

I must advise against this. The Crab will take your samurai, chew them up and send them back to you in vastly reduced numbers, traumatised and maimed. A Minor Clan such as yourself can hardly afford to be so wasteful with the lives of your samurai, else what will be left of your Clan in a generation or two?

Even greater poverty.

We have food on The Wall, send your best samurai and we will be sure to feed them.

This seems weird to be tbh, since generally what the Crab want more of is (in order) jade, and food. They have almost no problems with actual manpower what with BREED being stamped on the brains of every samurai-ko at an early age, which creates the perception of absolutely terrifying Crab mothers.

The Sparrow on the other hand are poor as shit, but have huge advantages in food production, despite getting the Shittiest Land north of the Kaiu Kabe Kuni wasteland. Their samurai farm, they barely maintain any standing force and again those guys farm. Like, with the peasants. In the dirt. And they're happy about it.

Might not be the massive rice bread basket you have up in Lion lands or larder the Crane have to pull from in the sea, but when your entire clan is directed at providing food and you'll eat some weirder shit (mountain vegetables, mushrooms, barley, tubers), food shortages shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure if the imperial court would find a functioning weapon offensive, but its probably the prettiest thing I have :V

So I should ask for his food and his soldiers?

He's asking for prospective brides if it helps.

... and I just sent him a giant phallic symbol. Oh boy.

No, see, this is the good side of the Emperor's habit of indirect communiques - misunderstandings are basically expected. You might get laughed at a little bit in court, but it's not like anyone expects courtly grace from the Badger in any case, so no harm done.

Probably.

Unless the Emperor demands you commit seppuku or something.

Well, from what I understand it's that we farm because we have to and are we make it by because our Samurai are farming. So if I disrupt the balance all kinds of things go to shit. Hence, I can't really contribute a ton of men or we will start running into food shortages.

TOTALLY FOR HIS VIRILITY.

That he said please indicates the weakness of the Unicorn, Unicorn is now clearly the second weakest clan to ever exist and now sits below even the Old Man on The Throne..

Who knows the mind of a clan made entirely out of half-Gajin suspiciously enthused with their steeds? :p

What would be the best thing to read to learn Crab?
The L5R wiki is decent for lore and getting a sense of the characters of the clan. There's a lot of fiction they've (AEG) put out over the years, otherwise if you can get your hands on the RP setting books and things there's a wealth of fluff.

I'd start with familiarizing myself with the families of the Crab: Hida (founding kami and HUGEST of HUGE samurai), the Hiruma (the Hida Champion's bodyguard and supreme salt-lords ever since their castle and lands outside the Kaiu Kabe were taken by the Shadowlands), the Kaiu (boffins, make everything, make the best stuff, build the Wall, maintain the Wall, love the Wall), the Kuni (the Crab's shugenja family and totally fucking metal. Paint their faces, jade strike anything that moves to see if it's tainted, live in a total shithole of horrific tainted mess), the Yasuki (courtiers, merchants, all around pushy, shady, and good to know. Stolen from the Crane clan which...well they weren't going to be friends anyway).

The Crab are associated with most of the southern minor clans, with the Falcon in the Shinomen Mori being the friendliest, but decent relations with the Badger (the death of the Badger Champion in Crane lands a few years back fanned the flames of the now smoldering Lion-Crane conflict), and the Mantis being less hunky dory due to arguments about who daddy loved most from way back when.

I have been reading the wiki and am surprised a bit, I expected a much more fire beneath the calm, direct, hyper loyal type of group. Instead the current crab seem to be more, "I literally hate most of you, will beat up the Emperor if given the chance, and want to go conquer something."
