Legend of the Five Rings: In Service to the Emerald Throne

How do you know DM won't consider you falling to the Dark Kami as a bad ending and simply give the role to someone else given that you've failed as Emperor?

Because I know @Dovahsith .

("It's just you and me, Lorgar. Corax and Lorgar! Lorgar and Corax! Ten thousand years of Corax and Lorgar! A galaxy that makes OTL 40K look like Star Trek is a small price to pay for this millenia spanning bromance!")

Let me think.
There is the only unfilled Major Clan, the Crab.
Think Samurai Sumo wrestler sized Nights Watch guarding the Great Wall against a constant invasion from Hell. They get looked down on for not spending time learning poetry when they have to defend all of civilisation from a Oni the size of a mountain with fanged mouths for eyes. Tend to be no nonsense, respect strength etc. basically the ASOIAF North except Japanese and located on the southern border.

Other than that you have the minor clans, the main ones that are active currently being the Wasp and the Fox/Kitsune. They are currently in an alliance with the Sparrow, a collection of impoverished samurai who are proud of their poverty.

The Wasp are odd due to refusing to use Katana's viewing it as a weapon dishonored by hypocrites, instead following the Clan Champion (a half Lion/Scorpion with grudges against both) as effectively becoming expert bowmen and bounty hunters.

The Kitsune are the descendents of the Unicorn who remained in the Empire when they wandered off to explore the world, considered the oldest officially mandated clan and have a strong relationship with the Crane and a reputation for marrying mysterious fox women. They can also talk to animals and are rather mystical.
Ya, I might just lurk here and watch you guys. So I can learn the lore more.

That be okay?

Their Wakizashi's (short swords) i believe. Pretty sure their grudge is limited only to Katana's so they can become legolas.

That is amusingly obtuse.

Also, I have on occasion seen it said Crab begs for aid, usually it is said they ask for aid and most portrayals of Crab show a very unbent unbowed demeanor. Does Crab actually beg or is it more like the Crab equivalent of begging?

Does that mean I get to play Fu Leng once Mina & Maugen Ra are done with their respective "Look at me, I'm saving Rokugan, I'm helping!" Great Decisions and Hantei 39 is so fed up with all this bullshit that becoming the earthly vessel of the Dark Kami and Lord of the End Times seems like a better option than another day of dealing with all his helpful vassals?

You assume @Maugan Ra will act as in canon. :V

No it's quite charming!

But yeah if @Dovahsith is fine with it I'd be happy to let you take a minor vassal family within the Phoenix with likely only one Action each year so you can play the game and enjoy it from a very minor prospective.
Honestly I think it would be better to watch and understand this world and lore before anything else.

It seems pretty meta-gamey to have the characters who OTL took the prophecy so seriously they started a war with Literally Everybody Else In Rokugan just...be chill about it.

The same way it would be if I on Turn One made a 180 degree pivot on Thirty Eight's "I ♡ the Scorpion Clan" and booted them out of the Imperial favor and the Imperial Court to be replaced with the Cra... (remembers Kisada also tried to usurp the Chrysanthemum Throne) with the Lio...(remembers Toturi succeeded in usurping the Chrysanthemum Throne) with......with....wiiiiiiiith.....

..........

................

@acecipher how would you like to not be poor ever again? The Emperor has a job opening.

Yes, but slavishly following OTL is also, mmm

A bit boring. :V

I can think of at least two ways @Maugan Ra could do things very differently.

I have seen it more like.... a Crab goes to another court and tells them, "Look, we say it normally and this time we really mean it: IF YOU DO NOT SEND ALL YOUR BEST WARRIORS RIGHT NOW TO THE WALL WE WILL LITERALLY ALL BE DEAD."

You know, begging.

You assume @Maugan Ra will act as in canon. :V

prepares the fortifications

So, I need to go over the canon a bit more, buuuuuuuut, if I recall correctly....

At some point there was some kerfuffle that was pretty stupid. The end result was that the Sparrow ended up guarding this really productive Imperial farmland that no one was allowed to eat from because MUH EMPERARS. It could feed all of them, and their poor, starving samurai, many of whom have to work the fields to even have rice to eat, were to guard it.

They were still starving afterward.

GIving the Sparrow like..... stuff is going to be a really awkward situation.

Well then.

I'll just look elsewhere to find a Clan, some Clan, somewhere, Major or Minor, that the Emperor can trust!

@Dovahsith
Are the Chuda still around?

Minor Clans
At this point in history the Minor Clans are:
80- Mantis (taken)
110- Badger -guards of the Northern passes (located on the Lion side of the Lion-Unicorn Border)
400- Sparrow (taken)
442- Tortoise - merchants and diplomats (and smugglers and spies, originally they were to trade with foreigners in order to keep an eye on them) located to the NE of Otosan Uchi on a peninsula
704- Dragonfly- near the Dragon and Phoenix, enmity with the lion (phoenix married a dragon instead of the lion she was engaged to, duels happened bad blood ever since)
750- Hare- fought against Iuchiban and long term enemies of the Bloodspeakers, located by Shinomen Forest
90- Fox- the Unicorn that did not leave with the Kami Shinjo on her journey, were forced out of their lands by the Lion (hint Lion are the true Villains!, see Wasp and Dragonfly as well). Have ties to Kitsune spirits (marriage ties as well!)
347- Centipede- Matriarchal clan located on the Coast, founded by a Phoenix but was far enough from their lands to be made a separate Clan, shugenja focused clan
834- Falcon- west of Shinomen Mori and near the Crab they have a land of spirits and study ghosts and other supernatural
1109- Wasp - from a Scorpion/Lion pairing follow the way of the bow and train and house Emerald Magistrates, protected by the Emerald Champion and enmity with the Scorpion and Lion

Huh... more than I thought, mainly since the Mantis haven't formed a Great Clan through merging several minors together.

Edit: Added founding dates and brief blurbs
