[X] Choose a starter.
-[X] Rowlet

Rowlet seems to have a fun dynamic to explore as a partner pokemon.

[X] Choose a starter.
-[X] Rowlet
======================

You think...

It's honestly tempting to leave, but that would draw too much attention and you'd have to make a new disguise... Which is honestly something you'd rather not have to do, mostly because you're kinda proud how you current human illusion came out and totally not because you have no idea how you want to change it if given no other choice...

Therefore, the best option right now would be to choose one of these "starters", at least for the short term... but who to pick...? Litten seems pretty level headed, Popplio seems nice, if a little on the quiet side, and Rowlet...

...Is currently bouncing in place while practically vibrating with excitement...

...Well he's certainly eager. To the point where you kinda don't want to let him down by choosing one of the other two instead. Mentally, you can hear some of the Skulk elders scoffing at the thought...

But still, he does seem like the most willing to go at the moment, and you're not sure how much private time you have left with the starters so you suppose he'll have to do for now.

"I think..." you switch to humanspeak as you quickly reapply your illusion, "I think I'll go with Rowlet, if that's--"

"YES!" the bird in question hoots loudly, causing both of the others to wince, "I GET TO GO WITH THE AWESOME SHAPESHIFTING HUMAN!"

"C-Congratulations, Rowlet..."
Popplio dazedly replies.

"More like good riddance..." Litten growls, "That being said, do have fun..."

"Will do!"
Rowlet chirps before fluttering over, landing on your illusory shoulder, "Hope you guys get awesome humans of your own soon too! It would be sad if I'm the only one of my buddies that got one..."

"Thanks, I-I'm sure we will..."
Popplio replies.

"Mhm." Litten stretches, "...Oh by the way, miss... Lilith, right?"

"Um... yeah?" you blink.

"You should probably hide your tail before you leave."

"My..."
you trail off as you glance down at your backside, noticing a tail firmly not covered by an illusion... Perhaps you shouldn't have reapplied you illusion as quickly...

Carefully, you shape the illusion around it your tail, ensuring it's masked from view once more before turning to Litten with a sheepish smile... "Er, thanks..."

"Don't mention it. Anyway, take care."

"You too." you nod, before turning to Popplio, "You as well."

"B-Bye." she smiles, "D-Don't um... let Rowlet get into too much trouble, o-okay...?"

"Aw, come on, I'm not that bad..."
Rowlet pouts from your shoulder, "Anyway, so long!"

***
After a few more parting words between the starters, you exit the room with Rowlet in tow just in time to see Professor Kukui coming down the hall. He flashes you a smile as you stand still, with Rowlet eagerly bouncing on your shoulder in an attempt to get to move onwards.

"Made a decision already, eh?" Kukui speaks.

"Um yeah," you reply, "I um... decided to go with Rowlet here... he seemed so eager so I couldn't really say no... you know..."

"Ah, I understand." he smiles, "I'm sure the two of you will make great partners going forward!"

"Exactly!" Rowlet hoots, "With her shapeshifting and my superb adventuring skills there won't be a pane of glass on this planet that can stop us!"

You stare at the bird for a long second, nearly stopping yourself from asking him if you really wanted to know before Kukui starts laughing.

"I see you two are getting along great already!" he gives the two of you a smirk, before reaching into his clothing, "That settles it then." he pulls out a small, red and white ball, similar to the array of colored balls you saw on that Selene girl's waist earlier, "Here's Rowlet's pokeball, remember to take good care of him."

"I-I will, thanks..." you hesitantly accept the object, staring at it as it rests in your illusory palm. So this is one of the alleged capsules the elders would tell stories about... the things that humans stick pokemon inside... are you're going to have to stuff Rowlet into this tiny thing...? You shudder at the thought.

"...You okay?" Rowlet questions, as if sensing your discomfort.

"D-Don't worry, I'm just thinking..." you assure him, choosing your words carefully in order to not accidentally out yourself.

"Oh. About what?"

As you try to think of the best way to answer him in front of Kukui, you notice Selene and Rotom suddenly appear at the end of the hall.

"Hey Lilith! Ooh! Did you choose Rowlet?" she smiles, "That's cool! My first pokemon was a Rowlet too!"

"Oh uh... Really?"

"I like this other human, she has good taste!" Rowlet comments, seemingly forgetting about his earlier question, "But I bet the two of us make her and her Rowlet look uh... slightly less awesome by comparison! ...Where is her Rowlet anyway? Do they not like human riding?"

"Yep! Actually, wanna meet her? It'll give you some ideas of what he'll be like when he's bigger... Or would you rather wait for the surprise?"

"I uh... um..."

"Now, Selene, no need to overwhelm her so soon after choosing her starter." Kukui interrupts before glancing at you, "Anyway, am I correct in assuming that you don't have a pokedex already?"

"...A poke...dex?" you tilt your head, "What's that?"

"Bzzt!?" Rotom vocalizes in a way you can't accurately describe,

"Oh, wow, you must be really new at this." Selene blinks, before smiling, "So, who wants to give the explanation?"

"Well as a pokedex myself I feel like I'm the mozzzt qualified to explain thizzz." Rotom floats in front of you, "A pokedex is a device thatzzz essential for any trainer to have. It recordzzz and containzzz information on every known pokemon in the world, and it hazzzz a lot of other neat featurezzz as well! For instance--"

"I think it would be best if she were to figure that out on her own." Kukui chuckles before handing out a white device similar to Rotom, except with less features, "Here. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare Rotom to operate this at the moment, but this pokedex still have all the essential functions a new trainer might need."

"Um okay... and I can just... have it...?"

"Well, as a pokemon professor, I'm authorized to distribute pokedexes to new trainers in addition to their starter pokemon. If you're worried about paying for it, then don't. They're actually not that expensive to produce, and there's legislation in place to make them more accessible to low income trainers anyway."

"Basically, it's free." Selene explains, "Though if you want to put more features on it you'll have to pay for the upgrades, though the basic stuff is enough for most trainers."

"I see..." you reply as you hesitantly accept the device as well, "Thanks..."

"Don't mention it." Kukui smiles

"So will this thing start flying like the orange one?" Rowlet asks.

"Oh, right..." you glance at Kukui, a little curious, "What did you mean by a spare Rotom?"

"Ah, I'm glad you asked." he replies, "The pokedex models I have on hand are special, in that they can be operated autonomously by a Rotom. Selene's pokedex was actually the original test model."

"Yep! Rotom here's the OG!" Selene glances over to the floating dex, which does a gesture equivalent to puffing out one's chest, before its lower face shifts into a picture of a similar looking creature with a round orange body and a pair of blue arcs of electricity branching off of it like a pair of arms.

"Rotom, the Plasma Pokemon." a different voice drones from the dex, "With a body made of plasma, it can inhabit all sorts of machines. Recent research has led to the development of many different machines that take advantage of this pokemon's unique capabilities. It loves to surprise others."

More things pop up on Rotom's face thing, but it looks like the same blobby stuff on the wood thing outside the lab, and therefore you can't make heads or tails of any of it. You do, however, notice a couple of symbols in the corner: A yellow one depicting a lightning bolt, and a dark purple one depicting something wispy... Are these supposed to show the type of the pokemon being shown? If so, you're pretty sure the lightning might be electric, but you're not sure what the wispy thing would be... Ghost perhaps? It does kinda remind you of malice in a way...

...Anyway from what you can see it appears that Rotom's also a pokemon? And possibly a fellow ghost at that...? Interesting... Also another reason why you shouldn't use pokespeak around humans, who knows who also has one of these things with them...

"Ooh! Do me! Do me!" Rowlet flutters, "What does the dex thingy say about Rowlet?"

"It seemzzzz that Rowlet wantzzz to hear his entry." Rotom comments in his normal voice, adopting a bemused expression.

"Aw, how cute!" Selene giggles, "Actually, why don't you give it a try, Lilith? Just point the dex at him and press the big button!"

"Um... Okay..." you reply, before doing so.

"Rowlet, the Grass Quill Pokémon." Your dex drones in a similar voice, "It builds up energy during the day with photosynthesis and flies silently through the sky at night for prey. They launch sharp feathers while flying about, switching to vicious kicks when an enemy gets too close."

"Wait, really? I can do that!?" Rowlet squawks in excitement, "The feather thing I mean, of course I know how to kick things... Anyway that sounds really freaking awesome I want to learn that as soon as possible!"

"I uh... think he got excited about the cool stuff he can apparently do..." you blink as Rowlet rapidly flicks his wings out towards the wall while straining.

Selene giggles, "I mean if I was a pokemon and heard a pokedex tell me about the cool things I could do I'd be excited too!" she gives you a thoughtful look, "...So, what do you plan on doing now? Do you plan on taking the Island Challenge?"

"I uh... no? I sorta haven't been here for long... sorry."

And that seems to have been the wrong to say considering how Selene's eyes suddenly light up and a grin spreads across her face... You don't like where this is going... "So not just a new trainer, but new to Alola as well, huh? Yeah, I can work with that!"

"E-Eh...?"

Kukui simply smiles and shakes his head, "I'll leave you to it, then Selene. Try not to overwhelm her too much..."

"Don't worry, Professor Kukui, she'll be in good hands!"

"W-Wait, what do you mea-AAAAAAAAA--" is all you can say before you find yourself being dragged by Selene for the second time today.

"Whoa! Is this when the adventuring starts?" Rowlet chirps as he's nearly thrown from his perch, "I sure hope it is! We have a whole region to do awesome cool things in ahead of us!"

"Bye professor!" Selene calls over her shoulder as you once again find yourself wondering just what you've gotten yourself into...

***

"Alright, Lilith, so the Island Challenge a right of passage here in Alola that is basically our equivalent to the pokemon gyms of other regions, you know what those are right?" Selene asks as the two of you walk away from the beach, at a thankfully slower pace than when you started... You were quite afraid that your illusion would pop from you tripping over a rock or something...

"Um... y-yeah? Who wouldn't...?" You reply. Truthfully you have absolutely no idea what a gym is, but you play along anyway.

"Great! Well throw all that knowledge out the door because we do things differently here!" she smiles, "Each island has several trials, each designed to test your strength, skills, and knowledge! Clear all of those, and you have to challenge the island Kahuna to a Grand Trial in order to earn the right to move on to the next island!"

"I see..." you fidget, "And the point of this is...?"

"Well, to see if you can become the strongest trainer in Alola, duh!" she continues, "Once you clear all the Grand Trials, you get the right to climb Mount Lanakila and challenge the Elite Four in the Pokemon League!"

"Ooh! That sounds like lots of fun! Let's do that!" Rowlet flaps his wings in excitement.

"Is that it...?" you ask, kinda not wanting to be forced into this if you can avoid it.

"Well, if you beat the Elite Four, then obviously you get to challenge the champion for their title." Selene explains, "Our league is still pretty new compared to other regions, so our current champion is actually our first, and nobody's been able to beat her yet. She also sounds really cool and mysterious from what I heard about her..."

"Really, Selene?" Rotom frowns.

"...What?"

"Are you really doing thizzzz...?"

"Doing what?" she gives him a cheeky grin

He makes a noise that sounds like a sigh mixed with electrical arcs, "...Nevermind."

"Oh, Lilith, by the way..." Selene glances back at you.

"...Yes?" You hesitantly respond.

"Do you plan on giving a nickname to your Rowlet? I know some trainers like to name their pokemon, so I was curious if you were one of them."

"Well, I don't know..." you think for a moment, "Actually, do you think you can give me a couple of minutes alone with... my pokemon?"

Your pokemon... It feels so weird to say that...

"Hm?" Rowlet rotates his head towards you at your words.

"Huh? Oh. Sure, go ahead! Rotom and I will wait just down the road!"

"Thanks." you make your illusion smile, before quickly turning to the bird on your shoulder once Selene is out of earshot.

"So uh..." you say in a low voice, "I'm honestly not sure about this whole Island Challenge thing..."

"Huh? Why not? I'm sure we'd be amazing at it!"

"Well uh... I really want to get back to my Skulk, and I don't think staying here for who knows how long doing these challenges would help with that..."

"O-Oh... Well uh, you're the boss then, so... how do we do that?"

"I-I mean you don't have to come along if you don't want to..."

"Nah! You picked me as a partner! Where you go, I go! Plus I'm your backup! Going anywhere without backup is bad news, right?"

"...I mean if you really want to I guess you can come, but the Skulk kinda doesn't like outsiders so..."

"Well we can just cross that bridge when we come to it! So where is this... skulk thingy anyway?"

"The northern tundra of a region that the humans call Hisui. Though I'm not sure where that would be from here, I sorta washed up on shore..."

"Hmm... Well that might be a problem, that cool Selene girl just said the only way to get the right to leave the island was to fight the kahuna guy in the island trial thing right?"

You open your mouth to answer before realizing that he has a point... If everything Selene says is true, then the only way off the island and start looking for Hisui without arousing suspicion would be to do the Island Challenge in at least some capacity...

"Hmm...."

You're... not really a fan of the idea... but you think about it...
[] Honestly you might not have much of a choice. Might as well keep up the "trainer" act for now...
[] Maybe you can sneak off the island instead? Though first you'd have to ditch Selene and Rotom without them noticing...

"Oh, speaking of things Selene said, did you uh... want a nickname at all?" you ask.

"Hmm... It's up to you! I don't mind either way!" Rowlet replies, "You're the trainer after all!"

[] Nickname Rowlet?
-[] Yes. (Write-in)
-[] No.

(This will set the precedent for nicknaming pokemon. If "No" wins here, then you will not be prompted to nickname pokemon with future party members.)

So Selene is the champion huh.

Made a minor edit to the dex entry segment due to noticing an inconsistency that slipped through the proofread. Don't worry, it doesn't affect the votes, but I felt I should mention it just in case it may confuse people who already read it in the future.

We shall have the Most Heartwarming and Nice adventure! With Friends! And Challenges! And Fluff! I also suspect that we've travelled forward in time (maybe via ultra wormhole...?) so having a goal to work towards when we find out... would be nice. (Edit: whoops, didn't read the "surviving" part on the description. Swallowing my words now!)

IC it makes sense too; Selene seems... nice, for a human. If a bit too enthusiastic. Better to study humans first, too, if we want to blend in. And maybe she'll know how to get to Hisusi...? (And well, Rowlet seems pretty taken with the idea of a journey... and it would be nice to travel with a friend...)

Also, nooo! How DARE you make the starters all so utterly likable! With such distinct personalities, too! Poplio was super cute, with that shy charm, and interested in contests! (Witch, if we were to make, it would be fun to have a vote on the choreography, with bonuses if we came up with something good and/or creative.) Litten seemed mature with a (heh) cool head, with would have helped us not panic. And knowledgeable, to booth! Why make us choose one?! (jk)

I'm happy we ended up with Rowlet. He seems enthusiastic and nice (actually reminds me a bit of Selene), and introvert-extrovert is one of my favorite dynamics. Since he evolves into a ghost type, we could train with him, and learn some tricks in turn.

Ah, one last question; is the quest narrative-based, or will there be rolls?

Hey, just wanted to apologize for the delay, my evenings have been rather busy as of late.
Will try to have the next update up sometime this weekend, so please wait just a little bit longer.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Hey, sorry I kinda dropped off SV for most of the month. Unfortunately I've still been a bit busy most evenings so I haven't really had time to update quests. That being said I'm planning on hopefully getting this (and a couple of my other quests) up and running again within a couple weeks if I can.

Really, I just wanted to let you all know what was going on, and that continuing this quest is still on my mind.

Also...

Wow... I really didn't expect to see something like this. In fact, I think this is one of, if not the first, times anyone has done any sort of fanart on one of my quests. I guess that means I must be doing something right this time? *shot*

Joking aside, this seriously looks amazing. Mind if I threadmark it?
