For the girl known as Kiyohime, life was dull.
Wake up. Eat. Clean. Ensure that the visiting priests were comfortable. Cook food. Clean more. Sleep.
The closest that the girl ever got to something resembling interesting was the letters from her friend, Misukume. Kiyohime hadn't met her in person in years, but they still exchanged letters regularly. The girl had gone on to join the imperial court of Emperor Toba, and certainly lived a much more exciting life then Kiyohime did.
Life was a monochrome blur, each day indistinguishable from the next. On and on, it repeated endlessly.

Life was a monochrome blur, each day indistinguishable from the next. On and on, it repeated endlessly.
Until she met him.
The priest's visit wasn't something that was unexpected. Kiyohime lived with her mother, on the route to a shrine. Priests would stay for a night on their trip to the shrine. It wasn't something that came as a surprise.
But this priest wasn't like the others. They were grumpy old men, for the most part. This one was different.
His name was Anchin. And from the moment they met, Kiyohime's world changed.
He was polite. He was nice. He helped Kiyohime with her chores, even as her mother told him that he didn't need to. He was handsome. When he smiled, Kiyohime's heart skipped a beat.
When Anchin called her beautiful, Kiyohime realized she was in love.
When he left to visit the shrine, Kiyohime waited. He still had to return from the shrine, and when he did, he would stay another night. Another chance to see Anchin... It was all she wanted.
The world seemed much more lively, in that day. Much more colourful. Much more beautiful.
As the day drew to an end, Anchin returned. Kiyohime saw him come, and was overjoyed. She didn't leave his side once, that night.
When the morning came, he had to leave once more. And suddenly, Kiyohime was afraid. What if she never saw him again?
And so, as he left, Kiyohime told him everything.
She spoke of her love, of how he gave the world a purpose. She begged him to stay, and when he said he could not, begged him to take her with him.
Anchan once again said he could not. He said that his duties as a priest would keep him too busy, and that he would be unable to care for her if she came with him. But, to dry her tears, he promised that he would return one day, and would marry her when he did.
With the knowledge that he would return, Kiyohime was calmed. And so, madly in love, she waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Weeks passed. She waited.
Months passed. She waited.
Years passed. She waited.
Anchin never returned.
It wasn't until after her mother died, that Kiyohime realized that Anchin wasn't coming back. And with that realization, she wept.
Her tears fell endlessly for days and days, and the sorrow she felt rooted into her heart.
Years passed. Misukume's letters had stopped coming. Anchin finally returned.
He was old, now. Kiyohime didn't recognize him at first. But once she did, the sorrow in her heart turned to hate.
Her face took a scary look, and at the sight of her, Anchin grew fearful, and ran. She chased him, until they came to a river.
Anchin was allowed into a boat, which left before she arrived. Her hate still strong, she swam after the boat.
She loved him. She loved him, she loved him, she loved him. He betrayed her. He abandoned her. She was sad. She was sad, she was sad, she was sad she was sad she hated him she hated him she hated him hate hate
hate hate hate-
When she came out of the water, she was no longer 'Kiyohime, the Human,' but 'Kiyohime, the Dragon.'
Her hate spurred her on, and she chased him to a temple. The priests inside tried to stop her, and in her rage, she killed them. Eventually, they ran, and she allowed them to escape.
She could smell Anchin, hiding from her. She followed the scent, and found him, hiding underneath a giant bell.
She could have moved it, easily. but she refused. Instead, she would make him suffer, like she had suffered.
Her breath was set aflame, and the bell melted. Anchin died, covered in molten steel.
And as the target of her hate died, all that Kiyohime had left was the sorrow.
By the time the priests arrived to exorcise her, Kiyohime had already died of a broken heart.

Love... Hurt so bad. But still... It was better then the alternative. The world as it was, monochrome and lifeless, was not something Kiyohime wanted to return to.
Perhaps, the next time she found love, they wouldn't leave her. And if they tried...
She wouldn't let them.
