Yuri Partial Sucess!

☆☆☆

You decide to move at night. You could case the joint in the daytime, but you want to be thorough. If you were going to study the whole area, you were going to leave no stone unturned. Having to deal with people would be a pain and you were confident enough in your research not to ask around.

Plus, it'd look bad if you stole from an offertory box in broad daylight. You had some pride as a criminal. Doing it at night means less chance of getting caught. Less chance of getting caught means less chance of getting arrested. More importantly, it means less chance of looking uncool.

You have your plushies do it: the vampire bunny, JK werewolf and zombie dog already had a Grief Seed under each arm. Technically they were stealing, not you; the plausible deniability helps you sleep at night. Honestly isn't that what matters? That, and Liar Liar won't fuck you if you do get caught; half-truths are good enough to spare you from your blessed curse.

Kei, Madoka and the gloomy one are on the other side of the shrine grounds. They only make shrines bigger than this in Kyoto, so you didn't have to worry about Kei catching you steal. A part of you wants her to catch you, to scold you. The other, smarter parts of you gang up to push that thought away.

The plushies crawl into your pocket; you count the Grief Seeds by feel. You have six, plus the two you left with. More than enough for you, Kei, Madoka and the gloomy one. Normally you didn't like traveling with a pocket full of Seeds; they made you a target. A Gem cleaner is worth it's weight in gold and Maj close to Witchout could sniff out the damn things. Being loaded was a hassle and you hate hassles.

You look around. It's a cloudless night, the blue crescent moon sits high and cold in black velvet. You fiddle with the collar of your leather jacket; big skies made you feel small. The shrine grounds are empty, florescent lights along its hewn stone paths are all off. LED prayer strips provide your only light, hanging from bamboo trees growing over each other like an old screensaver. The wind whispers, you sigh. You're glad you came at night; this place would piss you off during the day. There's a nouveau rich neoclassical feeling to the place; steel and stucco painstakingly made to look like weathered wood and thatch.

A lot of effort for a facade. A lie. One that the world accepts without question.

Honestly, you're jealous.

You spit into an expertly kept shrub and wander for a bit, making sure to stick within pulsing range of Kei. It'd suck to get jumped without being able to call your pet beatstick. Your gun gets warm in its holster, you feel it through your tight torn blue jeans. There's a hint of cherry blossom and gun oil in the air, your zombie dog plushie climbs on your shoulder and motions towards the sacred dance stage. It's picked up the scent too.

You send it out to scout, close your eyes and let it's senses become yours. You see two identical looking girls in the grass behind the stage, hoods down on their white cloaks. From the design, they're Magius. They smell of cherry blossoms and sorrow.

There's a perky looking one in pigtails walking and talking with a posh looking one with a samurai ponytail. Both of them have brown hair and red eyes; you'd bet 500 yen they're twins. Your plushie gets closer, climbing atop the stage to make out what they're saying.

"Elder Sister, Elder Sister," the perky one says. "The moon is beautiful tonight."

"Right, dear sister," the posh one says. "It's radiance is divine."

"Not as divine as this shrine Elder Sister," the perky one teases, skipping over to a bag half under the shrine. "Or your flute playing."

"You flatter me overmuch, dear sister," the posh one says, pale hand to her chest. It almost glows in the LED light. "I am merely a novice flutist."

"You're too modest, Elder Sister," the perky one gives the posh one an aw shucks smile eyes closed. "Won't you play a tune for your precious little sister?"

The posh one closes her eyes and smiles back. From her early stress lines, it's not a common gesture. "I suppose I can indulge my dear sister a trifle." She transforms into a tarted up traditional Japanese dress in red, white and green. In her hands is a simple black flute.

With machine precision, the posh one brings it to her mouth and plays a tune. It's deep and wistful and longing. You find yourself getting lulled into their pace, think the Magius gear is a coincidence.

Then you see the bodies. Two Maj, turned to meat smoothies in a blender of cherry blossoms. The perky one must've pulled their bodies out of the bag. You pray to the Goddess they were already dead.

You flinch, your plushie body plops out of its hiding spot.

"Dear sister, I feel as if we are being watched," the posh one says, eyes open.

"Right," the perky one says, transforming into her Maj outfit, an idoled up mirror of her sister. Nouveau rich shit, just like the shrine. She plays a tune, high and jagged. A single eye glows red in the night's gloom, a pair of giant gnarled hands reach from the shadows around her.

She smiles in your plushie's direction as the hands flex wicked claws. "Come out, come out, wherever you are."

Huh, didn't think we'd steal from the Shrine... that's a bit reckless, considering all the things we don't know about it.

Also, whom do the offered Grief Seeds normally go to? Is there some organization that collects and distributes them? There obviously is, if Yuri is concerned about getting caught stealing, but who are they?

And how does it work with the Dark Offer? It's an offering made with a prayer to the Devil, but how does the Ripper - or at least the one who is involved with carrying out the sentence - get their due?
Then you see the bodies. Two Maj, turned to meat smoothies in a blender of cherry blossoms. The perky one must've pulled their bodies out of the bag. You pray to the Goddess they were already dead.
'Were already dead' - as in, before their bodies got desecrated? They look like they've been dead for a while.

Is this something the two guests brought with them, or were the bodybags already at the shrine, and the two picked them up? Are they trying to get rid of the bodies? The 'steel and stucco' structure of the shrine implies a secret behind its construction, so there may be a containment facility, or a Magius hideout, or something to that effect around here.

What is the "main shrine" listed among the options? Why is it safe there?

Come to think of it, how far is the pulsing range, and how big are the shrine grounds that Kei is supposedly on the other side of?

The Seeds are payment for Ripper-chan. That's what the Dark Offer is: payment. Nobody knows how she gets her due because normal people don't root around in offertory boxes. Yuri deduces that Ripper-chan just takes the Seeds like she does after a job and that the Ripper-chan Rumor is some Scooby-Doo bullshit.

Yuri is worried about stealing in the daytime because the police would assume she's stealing money.

Yes, but being bodybagged doesn't necessarily mean a Maj is dead. Since they don't need to breathe, Maj can be stored in all sorts of fun places with their Soul Gem intact.

A Maj torture method is to take a girl's Gem and put them in a coffin or other small container. They start to freak out and convince themselves they're suffocating; in the panic they rarely realizes how long they've been going with bad air. The ones who do realize and aren't hip to all of the secrets of Majdom, tend to corrupt with the quickness.

Play and find out. :V

The inner shrine is the main shrine. And it's not necessarily safe, it's your main objective.

Come to think of it, how far is the pulsing range, and how big are the shrine grounds that Kei is supposedly on the other side of?
The pulsing range is plot distance. The plot of land where the shrine resides is plot square meters. :V

But seriously, pulsing range is the same distance as a girl's effective Soul Gem communication range, which I believe is 100m. The outer walkway's width is 110m across and Yuri's sticking within 100m of Kei via constant low frequency Gem pings. Kei and Yuri are on the opposite sides of the walkway width wise. The main shrine is 45m away from the stage Yuri is currently at. Inside the main shrine is the objective.

Ah, I see. It's a normal shrine (by the day, at least), but you can throw in some 'extra' for the services. For some reason, I thought most shrines in a city with heavy Maj presence dealt in Grief Seeds (since it's the magical currency), and was wondering who could be in charge of that.

...I mean, it's totally something we should introduce, since no one is more fit to absolve Maj of their sins (and their Grief) than the envoys of the Goddess. What is a mere pittance of Seeds compared to one's immortal soul, er, Soul Gem?

Also, it just hit me. Three Grief Seeds in a day! Ripper-chan must be a very busy girl. :V

All I needed to know was whether moving towards the main shrine would put us out of the 'distress signal' distance, which it looks like it might.

Also, the objective is to bring Madoka and Homura to the main shrine. If they aren't with us, then what is the point of going there? To trigger all the traps personally? No thank you! :p

There's a reason for the lack of updates that's not laziness or my life being a dumpster fire: I wasn't fully prepared to make a Magia Record Quest and I honestly don't feel Yuri can carry a story by herself as she is now. Even with outlining and stuff, I just don't hear her like the others. Since this is a Quest, it wouldn't be right to just kill her off.

So good news bad news time. The bad news is this is on official hiatus now. You'll have to hold this cliffhanger.

The good news is MagiReco part 1 is wrapping up and getting an anime release sometime this year. Once the anime is completed, I will reboot Kamihama Deathmatch with full readiness and a character you and I know very well.

Hopefully, instead of fouling out with our Angel of Damnation, I'll hit a Homurun. :V

It's a shame, because I really liked her premise as a character. Just like Sayacchi has to tread the line between animalistic and outright beastly, so does Yuririn must balance on the precipice between the truth and lies. The scene where she spoke mockingly of Kei only to be told it wasn't true and her horrified reaction was probably one of the best in the entire quest. Someone who warps reality around them to the point they can not affort to be truthfull even to herself, for fear of it being turned against her - having to make do with half-truths, half-cares and half-loves, - are they not a perfect fit for a PMMM protagonist? It has a classic feel of a story about trust and overcoming the fear of rejection and loss, but with a cruel and eldritch twist to it. Or a fairy tale, where one careless mistake brings ruin, turns the carriage into a pumpkin, or a loved one into a swan.

I felt there was great potential to be tapped there, but maybe the story you wanted to tell is a different one.

Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed for this to resume, or reboot, or what have you. I don't think I ever had so much fun with PMMM fiction as I did with your setting. There is something in the combination of mystery, violence, and loud carousing in-between that warms the cockles of my twisted heart. I love strategy games with several conflicting parties struggling to achieve an objective; I love mysteries with inexplicable phenomena that people try to exploit without really understanding and oftentimes dooming themselves in the process; I love watching the characters grow as their weaknesses, doubts and naivette get kicked out of them, and I do love some good old brawling and tussling. These quests deliver on all accounts.

Once the anime is completed, I will reboot Kamihama Deathmatch with full readiness and a character you and I know very well.
Hmm? Who will it be? I was pretty happy with OC mains...

In Japanese, it would be a Homura~n, my mans.

Thank you for the kind words. Yuri has an interesting premise, but I couldn't get her voice down. I need my protags to have a strong character voice to drive my writing along, and felt Yuri only had that voice playing off Kei. Every update with just Yuri felt like pulling teeth to write because of that.

The layover gives me time to hone her voice, since the Ganbare Crows will still be a thing.
