KalinaQuest: Reflection (Bleach AU Quest)

Act 0.2: Visit, Part 2

At the end of the week, you heard what the plan was for this year's field trip. You would all be travelling out to various towns across the Gaian Empire. It was meant to give you experience with being able to solve a variety of problems.

Instead of teams of four, this year you were going to be sent out in teams of three and you were meant to not just have a repeat of the teams from last year's expeditions.

That meant Team A, which was Endymad and Mariannerie, was off the table for you. They ended up getting Tuilendra as their last member.

What teams were left then?

Team ATeam BTeam CTeam D
EndymadHelenriaAdamusMyrshai
MariannerieSeoihildaKryakoFrisob
Tuilendra[ ][ ][ ]

Hmm…

You could team up with Helenria again. She was a friend of yours. Seoihilda was nice enough too and a skilled fighter.

Team C… Well, you'd not really spent much time with Kryako. That team might be fairly rough though with Adamus there.

Myrshai and Frisob… They weren't the best students. Sure, Myrshai was smart but he was worse at fighting than you were and had relatively weak reiatsu. Frisob… Frisob just never really does anything that you've seen. He's a passable fighter but his marks in the theory classes are awful. And again, his reiatsu always seems so much weaker than yours.

Team B or Team D?

One second, where is each team actually going?

You find the sheet listing their destinations. Team A would be going to a city to the distant north east. Apparently they've got a lost library there which was stolen from some human ruler.

That might be interesting but there was no free space there.

Team B was going to a farming town in the south west. Nothing seemed particularly special about it though. It was apparently very old though. A very old town that had never had the economic power to become a city. Hmm? There was a mention of some kind of ruins that would be explored as part of the field trip.

Team C was… oh? They were going to the lands underneath the new world. That was probably the longest journey any of these teams would need to take. You didn't know much about the new world. Really there wasn't any difference between the underground here and the underground there. It's very far away culturally though.

Team D was going to a town to the near west. It was marked that it was probably the easiest of the expedition. Was that why the boys had chosen that team? As far as you could see here, it would just be helping the citizens with various problems with no interesting parts.

Well then…

Who else hadn't chosen yet?

Sigubert and Hesiodio? That was a pity, you'd been hoping that you could work with Sigubert this time. It seemed you both shared a grudge after all.

Let's see, either of them could join any of the teams. You could probably try to sway them one way or another but there wasn't really much point in that.

What would you try to do?
[ ] Join Team B
[ ] Join Team C
[ ] Join Team D

Additionally, you may:
[ ] {Suggest} Write in (Who do you think should take which empty spot, it will be random if you don't have any input.)
[ ] {Chat} Write in (With who and about what)

These are just to flesh out the next chapter.

And we're right back to this choice again. Luckily the field trip is the main point of this chapter so we're not losing anything.
Each destination has the same "Overall arc" and will have the same boss fight at the end, it's just a difference in what you do before that point and who you are with.
And yes, you can suggest and chat if you want to fill up the next chapter a bit.

-[X] Just, you know, talk. How did they spend their holidays? About fencing with Seoihilda, about social events with Helenria. It will be bad if you get too immersed in your studies and stop paying attention to others.

For some reason, I got the impression that this is what is happening with Kalina right now.

While it would be interesting to visit the 'new world', I don't think there's a chance in Hueaco Mundo that Kalina will willingly join a team with Adamus.

I like this option though:

Also, just for the sake of pointing out the term I was using. The place they're going is below the USA.
Yep, that's what I figured. It's why I put 'New World' in ''. It's a very pre-1900s way to call it, but that makes sense because the Gaian's haven't been above ground in how long?

I mean, it's not fair to say that they haven't been above ground in a long time. There are "Near surface" towns, even if those towns are only 1 mile below the surface instead of 15~ miles of most other towns that aren't seen as "Near surface"

The thing is that Gaian culture learns very slowly. They have modern books that they stole from the surface but they are still quite out of date culturally.

There are some Gaians that still think of north america as a group of British colonies. Mostly because the idea of "Parts of an empire leaving the empire" Is absurd to them.

As a note, I haven't said anything here that your character couldn't know. They do know that America isn't a British colony but, as an example, they might not know anything about the civil war. Sigubert is probably the only person in your acquaintance/friend circle that had heard about that. He's aware of a lot of surface history.

Team… B. Yeah.

There was no way in the world that you'd go with Team C with Adamus there and you didn't really know the members of Team D.

So yeah. Team B it was.

Everyone else sorted themselves into the teams and eventually the following came out:

Team A: Endymad, Mariannerie and Tuilendra
Team B: Helenria, Seoihilda and you.
Team C: Adamus, Kryako and Hesiodio.
Team D: Myrshai, Frisob and Sigubert

You felt bad that your friend had to go with Adamus but it made sense. Sigubert was never going to choose team C either.

Transport this time was apparently going to be trickier so there was some time before it was fully arranged.

While that was going on though, you took the time to chat with your teammates.

Helenria was happy to be on a team with you again. You had really grown much closer to her over the course of the year.

She liked spending time with you because you offered a different perspective. You had grown up in a normal village where she had grown up in what was basically a palace.

Kalina was fairly sure she had a friend for life in Helenria.

You'd spent much less time with Seoihilda. Sure, Kalina went to the fencing club to keep practising but she was still at the lower level. Seoihilda had told you about the official martial art though.

Now, some context, Gaians were all taught to spearfight, they could even get quite stylish with it though. But that was still just "how to fight with a spear." While Blade arts provided one path to improving your spearplay further, that wasn't what the fencing club went with.

There was a martial art called Gaian Spear Dancing, Seoihilda was working towards learning it. You didn't understand the specifics but it seemed to involve incredibly fast reflexes. You'd seen one of the last year students use one of its forms and their weapon became a blur as they spun and struck.

It would take a lot of work for Kalina to learn though, and she still had so many other things she wanted to work on too. Ultimately it was probably not a style for her. It was still interesting though.

Much later in the day, it was finally announced how you'd be travelling. They gathered you all to the briefing room and your teacher explained.

"Due to the large distances involved in some of your journeys, you've been given permission to use a core diver."

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Mn2mvlyNQ

The core divers were special vehicles that could only be run with the help of an experienced knight. They were probably only being allowed to use them because there were a prince and princess in this class.

The next morning, you all set off to the dive terminal of the capital city. It was a large-ish building in the noble quarter.

Normally it was only used for rapid response teams or vital messages that needed to arrive at their destinations at incredible speeds. AKA: It was something that only nobles would use.

The insides of the station were very loud as four pods were being positioned for successive drops. Beside them were a set of knights in full armour. They'd be the pilots then.

Your teacher went over the plan one more time.

The core divers would drop you off near your destinations today and they'd return to get you in three days time. Each destination was setting up a list of tasks and you were meant to do as many of them as possible.

Each team lined up at the boarding ramp as each loaded into their sphere along with the pilot.

Each pod was made of thick walls of heat resistant metal, there was a small room where the pilot sat that had thinner walls that were created to help them navigate through the outer core.

Since the pilot was near-blind to their movements, it took incredible skill to guide a core diver properly. Not to mention the Stamina it took to endure the heat in the less-shielded control room

Regardless, your team took up their seats in the diver's main room and lowered the harnesses.

You heard a loud clunk as Team A's pod dropped first. You took a breath.

The pilot called back to you all.

"10 seconds to drop, 9, 8-"

You held on tight to the harness. Neither of the others had ever done this before either. Helenria looked stressed but Seoihilda was managing her fear admirably, even if it did show in how she was gripping her harness like you.

"3, 2, 1, Dropping."

The clunking sound was louder as the mechanism dropped the sphere into the tube in the ground that lead to earth's molten core.

Your stomach felt like it was trying to fly as you plummeted down, down, down.

"Impact in 3, 2-"

You braced.

"Impact!"

There was a sound like crashing and you prayed that they'd done this right.

If you think water tension is bad, think about the tension that liquid metal would have.

Once the crashing was over though, you were able to open your eyes again. That said, there was nothing much to see.

Your pod, made of metals just slightly heavier than the surrounding liquid core, was sinking quickly. Your hand felt strange as you moved it about, it felt… lighter? No, it was the same weight, it was just moving as if it was lighter.

"Reaching target depth in less than a minute." The pilot called back "This should only take about five minutes total."

The idea of the core diver was this: If you're travelling from a lower elevation, you're travelling relatively faster. So, if you would go deeper, you'd be going faster.

The problem was navigating the sea of the outer core. That had to be done with sound alone as you couldn't see through the metal.

You'd heard of Gaians who could do this kind of dive without needing the pod but that sounded a little silly to you.

Time passed and you all calmed down. The temperature in the pod was slowly rising though. There was no real way to cool it down here.

"Reaching the destination, prepare for a rapid ascent." The pilot gave the next call and you all braced again.

You didn't fully understand how the core diver was able to ascend but for the time being, you wouldn't question it.

There was a lurch as the pod started ascending towards the roof of the core.

Now, they couldn't build stations everywhere, major highways had small stations though.

You reached the Outer core's surface and the pod was carried up to the station platform.

Now all that you needed to wait for was for the sphere to cool enough for it to be safe to disembark.

Was there anything you wanted to do in the meantime?

[ ] Write in (This isn't just for the pod, you should also suggest things to discuss while making the last bit of the journey to your destination.)

Ending this chapter here because, while there is still travel to do, this chapter feels like it's been long enough.
Anyway, the Core divers.
Has anyone here read the artemis fowl series? I took some inspiration from those books for my version of the Gaians' culture, the Core divers came from there too, inspired by the shuttles.
A version of them are used for rapid transit between different elevations, the method is basically the same.

Act 0.2: Visit, Part 4

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpRvk8x60Xw

As the pod cooled, you decided to chat about various things.

Helenria seemed curious about how the lower class lived their lives so you and Seoihilda told your stories.

Your home village was fairly small for a gaian settlement. Now, sure, if a human had seen it then they might have thought it was still large. Around ten thousand gaians lived in the wide open caverns. That was nothing to the five hundred thousand or so that lived in the capital but you must understand one thing.

Gaians had no natural population limiters. Gaians don't require food or water. They don't die of old age. The only thing that can even slow their growth is running out of caves and caverns to live in and that can be sorted with the excavation of new caves.

So, what defined a "village?" It was the same as with humans. It was with production chains. Let's take jewellery as an example. While nobles traditionally have more ornate bodies, that's more a fact of the wealth they grow up in than any quirk of birth-

"No." Helenria objected to that "It's not just that actually. It's both. Nobles have a higher affinity for jewels and precious metals. Those born noble but raised peasants don't get the ornate decoration, true. But those born of lower classes and raised to higher don't bond to precious materials as easily."

…Was that just what she'd been taught or was it true? You weren't quite sure. She seemed to believe it though.

Regardless, back to jewellery. Gaians at every level of society liked decorating themselves. That made well made jewellery a commodity.

Villages were any settlement that gained most of their money via extracting or farming raw materials. Towns were settlements that gained most of their money via creating products using raw materials. Cities gained most of their money via… well. It differed.

"I've heard that it's largely taxes." Seoihilda noted.

Helenria rolled her eyes at that "No settlement can get all its money from a source like that, especially not one as big as a city. No, they're basically just doing the same thing as towns but on a bigger scale. They combine products together to create a greater product. A city may provide soldiers by importing arms and armour, you see?"

Your home village had been a gem farming town. Gem farming was fairly easy work, if very time consuming. Seed crystals, the proper raw materials, heat and pressure were all you really needed. It was in a way, much like how food was farmed.

And food was a product. It was actually a product that Seoihilda's hometown had worked on. Restaurants and a merchant route that took food from villages and sold to cities, normally in collections that had everything required to run a restaurant in a city.

By this time, the pod had cooled and it was safe to leave. Technically it was possible to leave earlier in the process but you would be in danger of burning yourselves on the way out.

As you left though, you pondered the differences in societies. All three of you were largely from the center of the gaian empire. What was life like outside that center, what was it like in the towns that sat just below the surface world.

What was the sun like? You'd read about it in books.

Once you three were out of the station, you set off down the highway towards the farming town in question.

Faria, a town that farmed the hardy grain that could live in the depths. Basically the grain for all of the bread eaten by Gaians came from here or a nearby village.

On the way, you started up a new conversation with Seoihilda.

"How different is Gaian Spear Dancing to Blade arts, really?"

She shook her head, most of what she knew of blade arts came from you telling her about it in the past along with what she'd found in the library after Adamus had first shown it off.

Regardless, she did have some thoughts.

"It's skill vs cheating. No, let me try again."

She quickly changed her mind after suggesting the path you and Sigubert were interested in was cheating.

"It's a matter of the result. Gaian spear dancing isn't supernatural. It's normal spearplay, just done at a much higher level. On the other hand, Blade arts don't seem to require that much skill to use."

Wow, she managed to insult you, Adamus and Sigubert there.

"Not like that." She quickly tried to roll it back again "I just mean that while I might master an advanced kata that would allow me to flow through attacks as if I wasn't there. Blade arts might just actually make you invulnerable…"

She threw her hands up "It feels a lot like cheating to me at least."

…Hmm.

Most blade arts were apparently not allowed in the fencing club. It seemed to depend though.

Was it possible to be elitist with a style that as far as you could see was just worse in every way to blade arts?

What was the point in working for something that didn't even make you that much stronger?

Not too long after that though, you got to the opening to the village's cavern. The main cavern itself actually seemed smaller than the one you had grown up in but you saw there were a few tunnels off to the side that likely led to the grain fields.

Like most villages though, the houses were built from quarried stone, mortared together with a sludgy mix of crushed rock, mud and clay. When exposed to heat, the mixture would harden and keep the lumpy pieces of rock together. The roof of each house was tiled as trying to do the same as the wall would just result in the roof falling in.

The first thing to do here would be to find the mayor, you were all told that he'd have the tasks you'd need to do.

You entered the village easily enough and headed to the biggest house…

That was the grain storage.

You headed to the second biggest house and met with the mayor. He was a large Gaian and he happily handed over the tasks. A lot of normal chores were here but the mayor explained there'd be more tasks ready tomorrow.

You had three days here, that could be broken up into about 6 sections, seven if you wanted to be tricky.

This afternoon, tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, Day 3 morning, Day 3 afternoon. Last day morning.

That said, you were expected to spend the last day just packing up and heading out to meet up with the pod to take you back to that academy.

With that in mind, you had been given three tasks to do so far. Plus you also had the opportunity to explore the village and find out where the ruins were.

With that all in mind, how would you want to spend this afternoon?

[ ] Get to know the area (And learn where the ruins are)
[ ] First Task (Find a missing pet)
[ ] Second task (Help with the grain harvest)
[ ] Third task (Find a thief)
[ ] Other (Write in)

Hey look, I am just blatantly taking another idea from the trails series. I'm not sorry, they're good games. More seriously though, you have tasks to do and ruins to explore on your own time. Plus, the write in option. This is if you want to do something that I haven't specified.

Hmm, how much time do we have/how many activity slots do we have? Can we just crush through all the Bracer Sidequests tasks at once, or do we need to prioritize?

Hmm, how much time do we have/how many activity slots do we have? Can we just crush through all the Bracer Sidequests tasks at once, or do we need to prioritize?
There are 5 slots you are free to use, and one that you can use but it would mean making the knight who's comming to collect you annoyed.
This means, that with three missions you've already been given and at least one more tomorrow, you don't have time to do everything... in theory.
In practice, if you do really well on a task, you don't use up a timeslot. That can at most happen once per timeslot.

"Doing really well" requires you roll at least 5 more (on the tricky tasks) or 10 more (on the easier tasks) on whichever check counts as the "Main check" of that task.

As a reminder, the academy doesn't expect you to complete every task given to you, it's bragging rights only. If you only want to do a couple of tasks and then spend one of the days exploring the ruins, the academy wouldn't complain.

[X] Get to know the area (And learn where the ruins are)

Familiarity with the area should make it easier to work in that area.

Agree, let's do the rounds get to know the town first.

[X] Get to know the area (And learn where the ruins are)

Act 0.2: Visit, Part 5

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGTldvD3PZk

You decided that today could be used to figure out the lay of the land.

You, Helenria and Seoihilda wandered the town and asked about its history.

Helenria aid another: 2+6, fail
Seoihilda aid another 13+8, pass
Gather information: 19+6+2 (Seoihilda's aid another)

It dated back in its current role for about a millennium, give or take. Before that it was actually a town that created arms and armour.

After the civil war though, they had stopped production and became a mining village instead. It was while they were working like that that they had rediscovered the ruins.

The ruins you heard about were even older than that though. It was said they dated back to year 0 of the Gaian calendar. It was a Bunker that had supported the local Gaians just after their breaking.

It could be called the source of Gaians in this area. Not under europe, but under this area specifically. Regardless, Gaians spread out from there and created this town among others.

Not many people went there these days. There were apparently old hollows there, they were likely starved but it was a place that could be called safe for their kind. They were too strong to hunt openly, else Knights would come put them down and they were too weak to survive the endless deserts of Hueco Mundo.

It might be interesting to poke around there though. Hollows were still blind in the dark after all. They should be equally blind in the ruins. You might be able to sneak around and have a look around for any writings from that age.

Anyway, after the production of the modern strain of the underground grain, they had changed from being a mining town to growing food. They already had massive caverns they could grow in that had been left behind by their digging.

The ruins were at the edge of one of the town's fields. You managed to get directions to it as a bell rang to signal that it was getting on in the day.

You had been able to get that information pretty quickly though. Maybe it was worth doing something else before everyone stopped for the day?

[ ] Investigate the ruins (Will likely take all night)
[ ] First Task (Find a missing pet)
[ ] Second task (Help with the grain harvest)
[ ] Third task (Find a thief)
[ ] Other (Write in)

And there we go, you already got a good roll and got an extra time slot.
This village has been through a lot since it was founded. I should note the timeline though a bit better here:
Gaian YearEvent
0~Bunker used and then opened, Gainas spread out over this area (Underneath spain, portugal and the south of france)
1000~Bunker lost, no one knows exactly where it is due to tunnel collapse and other changes in the geography.
1800~Town created to forge arms and armour for the war
2600~Town changed to being a mining village after the civil war.
2900~Bunker rediscovered
3000~Village becomes a farming village
3993~Your visit to the village

Act 0.2: Visit, Part 6

It was getting late but you still had time to squeeze one more job in. Notably, finding that lost pet.

Pets were rare in the empire, and only the wealthiest Gaians kept them. It made sense when you thought about it: Food was expensive and you had to keep pets fed. Plus, if it was a surface world animal, they likely weren't adapted to live in an environment of near-complete darkness.

The person who had suggested the task was the mayor's friend and one of the traders who sold the village's produce to other towns. His pet earth bat, a species that had evolved in the deep tunnels, had gone missing yesterday.

There were two things that made this task possible, first was that as a living creature, the bat would need to eat and drink. The second was that there weren't many places that the bat could be doing that at.

He was out in the fields. That was the most likely answer. While there were food stores in the town, water was much rarer.

And so you began to search. The three of you split up to search the different fields.

The grey-gold grain waved slightly as you walked past it. There was no wind here to blow it but your swift movement along the paths were enough to sway it slightly.

Now then, the first clue you'd have if the bat was nearby was to listen for its clicks.

…Yep. There it was. The light clicking of a bat that was navigating around in pitch darkness. Now you just needed to spot it.

…It took you a few minutes, listening for the clicks, to find it.

It was flapping around near the roof of the cavern.

Well, you'd confirmed where it was, now you just needed to bring him back to his owner. You weren't trained in how to handle animals. Helenria apparently was but if you went to get her, you'd lose sight of the bat.

Well, you'd have to try it at least.

"Here batty." You called, holding in your hand a small amount of grain "Come to me."

…It probably wasn't going to work but…

At that thought, you did actually see the earth bat flap down. You raised the hand not carrying grain and winced as it grabbed hold. Then you held the grain towards it and it began eating.

As it did so, you began to head back to town. This mission was accomplished, even if it had taken a while.

The town had fallen into darkness by now, all the lights at shop windows put out and most of the people in the town were likely going to bed.

You dropped off the pet, grabbed your friends from their fields and went to the Mayor's house again. He was allowing your team to use the guest rooms there.

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGTldvD3PZk

The next morning, you got the second set of assignments, three more tasks. You were still left with two from the first day too so… Best to get started on whatever you were going to do today quickly.

[ ] Investigate the ruins (Will take a full time slot even if you do well)
[ ] Second task (Help with the grain harvest)
[ ] Third task (Find a thief)
[ ] Fourth task (There was a brawl at the village's game hall last night, the mayor needs you to figure out what started it.)
[ ] Fifth task (Patrol the outskirts of the village.)
[ ] Sixth task (Explore one of the town's old mining shaft (not the ruins) since there is worry about it collapsing)
[ ] Other (Write in)

And here are all the tasks you have to do, 6 tasks in four slots, plus a ruins exploration that would take up a full slot.
As I said, the academy doesn't expect you to do everything. The choices of what you do chose are interesting though.

[X] Sixth task (Explore one of the town's old mining shaft (not the ruins) since there is worry about it collapsing)

This sounds the most urgent.
