Update Seven: Wherein you fail at Flying. And fall Asleep.
Update Seven: Wherein you fail at Flying. And fall Asleep.
Winning Votes:
[X] Johnathan
-[X] Attempt to fly.

[X] Joan
-[X] Fall asleep on the bed.

Story:
You are Johnathan Wick, and you are currently trying to fly. It isn't working very well. In fact, you are certain that it would be safe to say that it isn't working at all. You can see the trails of silver embers your gently flapping wings are shedding through the eyes on your back. You are getting increasingly frustrated. You are beginning to suspect that you have not developed your abilities enough to use your for their designated purpose.

The corners of your mouth twist downwards in annoyance. You once again survey the relatively spacious room you are in, calling up the Light of your Self to Illuminate the World with but a thought. You are still amazed at how much easier your wings make everything. You have discovered that they act as foci, allowing you to more easily establish and maintain a connection with your inner light.

You are grateful that they alleviate the strain, but you are also annoyed that they don't function like wings. Or rather, you mentally correct, you are annoyed that your wings don't function enough like wings; they still have the full range of motion of wings. You are not sure how this is possible, but you have rather gotten used to that.

You eventually give up your attempts as a lost cause and retire to the bed. You had worried about the wings making it difficult to sleep, but it seemed that they simply wrapped around your torso when not needed. Your last thought before you feel into the black was that falling asleep in a dream world might not have been a very good idea.
_____________________________________________

You are Joan Wick, and you are currently exhausted. You have just flown for several hours straight, and your wings ache. You are not quite sure how they ache, considering what they are made of, but you are too tired to care. You haul yourself off the ground where you have collapsed and stagger into the homy log cabin. You are fairly sure that most log cabins don't have elaborate ever changing stained glass skylights and luxurious rugs, but you are too tired to care.

You heave yourself onto the bed, not even bothering to slip beneath the covers. Instead you simply wrap your wings of windows around you like a blanket and listen to the susurration of the world. Your light globe hovers nearby, the soft glow and muffled beat quickly lulling you into a fast sleep. Your last thought before you drift off into the dark is hope that you will wake up next to your brother in the real world.

Voting:
So! We're at the timeskip, and as such voting is getting it's own section so I can explain some stuff. Johnathan and Joan both have 13 points each. You can spend these points on levels for different pursuits by replacing the zero with the desired amount of points.

Now to explain the Tier system. Tiers are in essence benchmarks for levels; Tier One skills range from level 1-5, Tier Two level 6-10, Tier Three level 11-15, and so on and so forth. However, there is a lot more to it than just that; remember how the Contemplation of the World description says that some skills require a certain level in it to be able to 'research' them? This is where that comes into play. A Tier One skill needs Contemplation of the World/Self to be Tier Two before it can become a Tier Two skill, and a Tier Two skill needs Contemplation of the World/Self to be Tier Two before it can unlocked. (A Tier Two skill starts at level six once unlocked; It effectively has 5 points already spent before you put in the point needed to bring it up to lv. 6)

So for an example, let's say you had Beat of the World at lv. 5, and you wanted to turn it into a Tier Two skill. You would need to have Contemplation of the World at lv. 6 or higher before you could do that. The same goes for unlocking Tier Two skills; you need to have Contemplation of the World at lv. 6 or higher before you can unlock a Tier Two skill. Upgrading a Tier One skill to Tier Two does do more than a normal level up however; it increases versatility, power, and breadth of effect. To use an example, upgrading Beat of the World to Tier Two might result in an ability to reinforce objects instead of just yourself, while a level up will only allow for better and longer lasting reinforcement.

AN: So! This update was relatively story light, though it had a fair bit of mechanics. I'm fairly happy with the whole Tier system, though my current selection of skills is fairly limited; I only have one skill worked out for Tier Three. However, I do plan/hope to implement some sort of system that allows for creating skills, so that isn't as big of a deal. I'm also beginning to get a rough idea of how Hogwarts is going to play out as well, which is kind of nice. I also went through the OP and re-organized it some so that it wasn't quite so long and disorganized. (I blame the BB code page for making me take so long to get this out.) I also updated the description for Da'at and the Form of the Soul skills. Just PM me if you aren't quite sure how the voting or Tier system works; while at its heart its a rather simple concept, I'm not sure how well I managed to convey that.

EDIT: Added names to the skills John/Joan already know.

You can't unlock Tier Two skills without having a lv. 6 Contemplation skill. *looks up at post* Oh. I forgot to name the skills you already know didn't I? Let me fix that...

So to use Joan as an example, you would need to spend five points on Contemplation of the World to bring it up to lv. 6 and Tier Two before you could unlock 'The Glory of the Kingdom flows through your veins enhancing you in all your endeavours.'

So it would be something like this:
[ ] Joan:
-[ ] Tier One:
--[ ] Through repeated immersion and raw determination you have developed your connection to the Beat of the World. - Beat of the World (lv. 1) - 2
--[ ] Just as the Self illuminates the World, so too does the World illuminate the Self. - ??? (lv. 0) - 2
--[ ] Just as the body is a reflection of the Self, so too is the World a reflection of the Beat of the World. - ??? (lv. 0) - 2

-[ ] Tier Two:
--[ ] The Glory of the Kingdom flows through your veins, enhancing you in all your endeavours. - ??? (lv. 5) - 2

So... the update probably isn't gonna get put out to day. I have to:
1. Come up with six skill descriptions.
2. Come up with six different ways to describe using said skills.
3. Further develop Joan and Johnathan's characters other than a general idea and a couple of weird quirks. I currently have both 'general concept' and 'minor details that help with immersion/characterization' but without any of the actual, you know, characterization.
4. Describe the kids house, the nearby park, their bedroom, their school... basically the setting.
5. Murder someone for stress relief eheheh... you didn't hear anything. ...Did you? I really don't want to have to kill er. visit erm. help? Yeah, help another voter. I don't have anywhere near enough of you guys as is.
6. figure out a system for normal skills like hacking and jewish mythology. (er... that was a bad example, but you get the point... *sheepish neck scratch*)
7. Figure out who Joan and Johnathan's parents are.
8. Write a description of the Kabbalah for the OP.
9. Write a summary of eight years. (can probably push that off for next update...)
10. A bunch of other stuff I'm probably forgetting right now.
11. Plan for Hogwarts when stuff actually starts happening. (it'll stay happening this time! I promise!)
And that isn't even getting into stuff that isn't related to this quest. So.... yeah. Not gonna come out today, or even possibly tomorrow. Sorry :( It will come out soonish though! I am not probably not going to abandon this quest!

New Skills:
Johnathan:
Light of the Self: (Lv. 3, Tier 1)
This technique allows the user to touch and manipulate the Light of the Self. The Light of the Self is not truly of the Self; rather the Self acts as a channel for a much greater Light. One of the most basic uses of this technique is to allow the Self to change the World, even as the World changes the Self. This generally manifests as a white beam of not-light, that scorches and burns it's target. Level affects two things: how 'wide' the channel is for the Light of the Self, and how skilled you are at manifesting and manipulating the Light of the Self when you release it upon the world.

Illumination of the World: (Lv. 3, Tier 1)
By harnessing the unrestrained potential of the Light of the Self, you have seen beyond the layer of reality that is the world, and into the foundation itself. The Light of the Self scours away illusions and deceptions, as it comes from a higher reality, and is thus beyond such things. When using this skill, nearby illusions are constantly degraded at a rate proportional to the level of this skill.

Manipulation of the Self: (lv. 2, Tier 1)
By manipulating the Light of your Self you can change it's reflection: your body. In essence you are forcing the Light of your Self into a specific pattern and then using the connection between the Light of your Self and your body to impose it upon your body. In general, if it involves altering the body, it is possible; healing bones, hardening skin, enhancing vision, and even turning an arm into a weapon is all possible. Changes will regress to the default state, which means that alterations such as shaper vision will wear off while healing won't. Level affects speed of alteration, duration, how much you can enhance something, the chance to 'fumble' and several other things. In general the closer to your existing body the change is the easier and quicker it goes and the longer it lasts.

Contemplation of the Crown: (lv. 6, Tier 2)
You have touched the whispers in the dark, and in doing so seen something beyond. Keter, The Crown above the Kingdom. A channel has been widened, and sometimes you hear whispers of things that you shouldn't know. You have learned to meditate upon the whispers, seeking guidance upon a specific matter. This skill measures a lot of things; it deals with how in sync you are with your chosen Sephirot, what the whispers will say and how clear they are as well as various other things. (many of which are secret) Perhaps more importantly, this skill is crucial to the Tier system.

Glory of the Crown: (lv. 1, Tier 2)
Your connection with Keter has expanded, and more than whispers may now flow across. The Glory of the Crown now flows through your veins, elevating you above the Kingdom. This technique passively reduces the amount of sleep, food, energy spent on a given task, and at higher levels can even eliminate earthly needs by in essence elevating your body's existence. The Glory of the Crown makes you both more and less real, shifting and changing your body's existence such that it is greater and yet lesser all at the same time.

Joan:
Beat of the World: (Lv. 3)
This technique allows the user to tap into the Beat of the World. The Beat of the World is the pattern in the not-light that creates and maintains reality. One of the most basic uses of this is to allow the World to change the Self, molding the channel by which you sup upon the World's lifeblood to enhance and reinforce yourself. Level affects two things: how skilled you are at dealing with the Beat of the World, and how good you are at using it's power to enhance and reinforce yourself.

Illumination of the Self: (lv. 2)
The Beat of the World thrums through your ears and eyes, Illuminating your Self. The Beat of the World is what shapes Reality, and this skill allows you to see it and intuitively understand it. When this skill is active, you can get information on anything simply by focusing; the amount of time spent focusing indicates how much information and how accurate it is. In general, the information that you focus on is the bit that the skill focuses on. Information also displays (in Joan's case) as a user friendly Heads Up Display. Later levels can allow for minor passive applications of this skill, as well as constant display of the HUD.

Manipulation of the World: (lv. 2)
The Beat of the World is what shapes Reality, and by changing it you can change Reality. This technique allows you to alter and change the Beat of the World, if only temporarily. The Beat is an iterative thing, taking into account that which it was before when it becomes anew. As such, changes to most objects will not unravel. However, changes to more fundamental things such as gravity, density of objects, and other manipulations of the laws of Reality will unravel, as they are constants programed into the Beat.

Contemplation of the Kingdom: (Lv. 6)
You have touched the whispers that accompany the Beat of the World, and in doing so seen something beyond. Malkuth, The Kingdom below the Crown. A channel has been widened, and sometimes you hear whispers of things that you shouldn't know. This skill measures a lot of things; it deals with how in sync you are with your chosen Sephirot, what the whispers will say and how clear they are as well as various other things. (many of which are secret) Perhaps more importantly, this skill is crucial to the Tier system.

Glory of the Kingdom (lv. 6)
Your connection with Malkuth has expanded, and more than whispers may now flow across. The Glory of the Kingdom now flows through your veins, aiding you in all things. This technique passively enhances your body, making it more resistant to hardship and damage, as well as increasing its strength and agility by solidifying its existence. The Glory of the Kingdom makes you both more and less real, shifting and changing your body's existence such that it is greater and yet lesser all at the same time.

Interlude:
There is a park. It is a nice park, with green grass, hills, a sand box and a play set. It has trees and flowers, and patches of dead grass that add just the touch of imperfection to the idyllic scene. It has a nice fresh breeze always flowing through that always carries the laughter of children on it. It has a nice stone path that young couples sometimes walk along. It is a very nice park, in a very nice neighborhood, next to a very nice school.

There are two children in this park. They are rather strange children, but people are used to them. They are as much a fixture of the park as the hills are; perhaps more so, even. Every day they get out of school, walk to the park, and sit on the swings and talk. What they talk about changes every time. Sometimes it's deep and meaningful, and other times it's about the shape of that one cloud over there. You know the one. The one that looks like someone crossed a duck with a dolphin. Yeah, that one.

And then the children get off the swings, take a drink of water from the fountain and walk home. And when they open the door, they take off their shoes and go upstairs. And then they lay down on their bed for a bit, before they get up and do their homework. And then they log into their computers and sit and talk about deep and arcane things. And they make notes and spreadsheets, documents and presentations. They never really use them of course, but they like the structure.

And then they sit and meditate, and let strange things whisper in their ears. And then they go downstairs to wash up, because it's dinner time. And then they sit and eat dinner with their mother and their father, and then they go back upstairs and do strange and wondrous things. They change faces and change worlds, and when they are done they go downstairs, brush their teeth and go to bed curled up besides each other.

And then they wake up and do it again, over and over. And it never really gets boring, because why should it be? They have everything they need and more, and are working on getting what they want.

The twins generally agree that they have a pretty nice life, and they don't really think that they'd change a thing. And it wasn't until a green eyed boy came tumbling into their life that they realized that maybe they should change things more often.

AN: So while it isn't the update I wanted to get out, it is at least something to tide you guys over with. The skills aren't final, so don't take them as gospel. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to add some sort of section that basically states what the current level allows you to do; on the one hand, it would restrict me in terms of writing and you guys in terms of plans, but on the other hand you guys would have a better idea of what you can do. What do you guys think? Any ideas on how I should do it?

General limits are good for this sort of stuff. Being exact is just restricting, but we do need to know whether Jonathan's Light of the Self-beam hits with the force of a hand-grenade or a nuke, at max. (Presumably, techniques can also be toned down. Wouldn't make much sense otherwise.)
For physical enhancement, 'durable enough that bullets only bruise' or 'faster than a professional athlete' or similar.
For techniques 'Lasts at max this long, this is the most outrageous thing you can do...'
Too many quests get all bogged down in 'This is the exact amount of force I can apply, and NO MORE!' with hundreds of skills blah blah blah... Keep it simple.
That's my advice.

Ah. One of the defining features of the Light of the Self beam is going to be that it literally doesn't matter what material it hits; its all the same. So it takes the same amount of time to burn through a foot of dirt as a foot of diamond. Magic however... well. It's going to have its own rules, and I rather think that I'm going to have a unique take on the Harry Potter world. Admittedly this is because I'm going to be following canon, which says more about the fandom than anything, but whatever.

So would something like:

In general, it takes you about a minute to burn through an inch of material. Your max diameter beam is around three inches, though this will quickly exhaust you.
Work well?

Illumination of the World: (Lv. 3, Tier 1)
By harnessing the unrestrained potential of the Light of the Self, you have seen beyond the layer of reality that is the world, and into the foundation itself. The Light of the Self scours away illusions and deceptions, as it comes from a higher reality, and is thus beyond such things. When using this skill, nearby illusions are constantly degraded at a rate proportional to the level of this skill.

You can burn through illusions in minutes with a crackling lamp of not-light that illuminates the World.

You can accelerate your healing by about 25% percent, and heal even unhealable wounds at a very slow rate. You can change minor things about already existing features for about two hours, and it takes around 5-10 minutes to implement them.

You can meditate upon the whisper to seek guidance, and the whispers will occasionally give aid- though it may not always be relevant, or even useful.

You now need only sleep for four hours. However, you can choose to sleep for longer; it is just that sleeping for four hours will perform the exact same function as a full night of sleep.

You can now crack a brick wall and bend steel beams with your strength when you go all out, though it quickly exhausts you. You can reach peak human speeds as well, though again it quickly exhausts you.

You can analyze the dimensions of a simple object in five seconds; more complex ones take longer. You can begin analyzing the composition of an object after you have completely analyzed the dimensions, though you can only get a list of major components.

You can make minor changes to an object in 5-10 minutes; these build upon each other, allowing you to create something completely new given enough time. Having enough information about something will make it easier to change.

You can meditate upon the whisper to seek guidance, and the whispers will occasionally give aid- though it may not always be relevant, or even useful.

Your body is faster and stronger than it should be for your age and build, and you can run for longer than you should be able to. Around a 30% passive increase in physical ability, which you can modulate at will.
So! I managed to get the explanations of power levels done (see above) and... not much else in terms of this specific update. However! I did end up spending like a couple of hours developing the OU part of this story, so I now have a much, much better idea of how things are going to be going once we hit Hogwarts, as well as the general cosmology of the setting. (I cannot wait for Hogwarts) So I pretty much just wanted to put this up to get a bit of feed back on the changes to the skills and to inform you guys that an update will be coming out at its earliest Friday, and at its latest Sunday.

Malkuth seem more powerful than Keter : Is it a case of early growth rate for malkuth and will keter be able to match it ?

Hmm...

*looks over rough outline of skills*

I think that the best way of describing things is that Joan and Johnathan are equally powerful, they just apply it in different ways. Joan can better apply power because she tends to work within the existing frame work of Reality, while Johnathan tends to use higher level concepts that aren't as efficiently applied yet can ignore a lot of physical laws. To use an example, compare Light of the Self and Beat of the World. Light of the Self is above things like density, and hardness; instead of burning away or destroying things it attacks, it simply removes them from the fabric of Reality itself. Compare this to Beat of the World which works within the framework of Reality, bending, but still vaguely obeying all of the neat little details like inertia and gravity. Johnathan is the Crown above the Kingdom, and his skills reflect this, just as Joan's skills reflect her status as the Kingdom below the Crown.

There is also the fact that Joan is simply better at doing things that affect the world than Johnathan by her very nature, so that probably plays a role. However, eventually firepower between the two of them will level out once you guys reach Tier Four and get access to the beginnings of the really B.S. skills.

Sooo... Will skill acquisition speed up? Because at this rate they're going to be adults before they even reach tier 4, and then Hogwarts is over.

Ok thank you for the explaination.
Welcome :)

Once you guys reach Hogwarts I'm going to bring the Da'at World into play, which should allow you guys to speed up skill point gain as well as start unlocking more skills. (You didn't think that I gave you that new skill for no reason did you? :))
Probably speeds up once they have something to use the powers on
Pretty much, although killing stuff is only part of the system.

And if your wondering why I haven't updated, it's because I just found out that I'm moving this weekend, instead of the week after next. :eyeroll: So updates are going to be a matter of me somehow managing to find time in between school and moving.

Story:
You are Johnathan Wick, and you are content. You are in your favorite tree with your favorite person doing your favorite thing. You are taking the opportunity to enjoy one of the rare perfect summer days; the kind that should be enjoyed with sunglasses, a book, and a cold drink. You do not have sunglasses or a cold drink right now, but you rather think that the book you are reading more than makes up for that minor problem.

You pause in your reading, glancing over the side of the branch you are resting on to investigate the noise. You recognize the boy staring up at you; he is in one of the other classes at your school. You note that his green eyes have darker green flames flickering in the back of them. You are rather annoyed that you hadn't noticed this before. You wonder for a moment if everyone can see them, or if only certain people can.

You start slightly as the boy begins to speak. You are beginning to remember why you let your sister handle all of the social interaction.

"Why are you up there?" the boy asks calmly.

You manage to tear your gaze away from the flames flickering in the boy's eyes in order to reply. "...Enjoyable."

"Oh. Can I come up?" Is all the boy says. You are beginning to like this child.

"...Public." You reply. The boy obviously understands what you mean, as he quickly begins to climb the tree. You lean back and open your book again, settling in for some more reading. Summer days like this are meant to be wasted after all. You don't even notice the boy setting in on a nearby branch.

What do you do?

You are Joan Wick, and you are awake. You have not been like this for long however. You are in an oak tree that you have spent several days building a hammock into. You glance at the clockwork watch on your hand, noting that you have slept for several hours. You yawn, stretching your arms above your head. Your brother always thinks that you like a cat when you do this. You smile at the mental image before almost falling out of your hammock.

On the branch that you have made grow parallel to the hammock is your brother and a boy you don't know. This is unusual because while neither of you particularly enjoy the company of children, you are well aware that you could be the queen of the school' if you wanted to. Your brother on the other hand... well. The less said about his few attempts at socializing the better. You shoot your brother a questioning glance even as you desperately try to stabilize the hammock.

"...Enjoyable. Interesting." is all that your brother says about the child, but a quick glance at the boy is enough to confirm that your brother is indeed correct. The boy's body language speaks of levels of self-confidence and self-assuredness that quite simply don't belong in an eight year old child. Perhaps he is like the two of you?

You smile; your brother was certainly right about this kid being interesting.

What do you do?

I wanted to ask for ideas on various character traits, habits, and hobbies for the twins. So stuff like Joan really liking spicy food, or Johnathan liking poetry. I kind of want to have some player agency in defining how Johnathan and Joan act here, so feel free to suggest stuff. I can't guarantee that a vote will make it into the story, but if multiple people like an idea it's probably going to go in unless it's something ridiculous like cannibalism.

AN: So! This is quite frankly horrible writing, and I'm going to be going back through and fixing this section up later. The only reason I'm putting this out is that midterms are next week so you aren't going to be seeing much of me. You may have noticed that Harry is a bit different from canon; this is for a reason. A lot of other people at hogwarts are going to be different as well; eight nine of them to be exact. On a side note, feel free to just ask me a question about the world; not only will I probably answer it, it might give me inspiration to work on the next update :)

Also! I've been working on the Da'at World, which is going to be where the original creation part of this quest takes place. I have a rough idea of how it's going to work, but right now I need to populate it. Therefore, I'm going to be taking suggestions on various myths to use and horrifying monsters to have you guys fight. I already have an idea for a particularly creepy species of vampires, but I need more. As such, if I particularly like an idea/suggestion, I'm going to give the originator a point that they can spend on leveling up a skill. So... yeah. Let the games begin!

Oh yeah; I've updated the main page with the new skills. I had to stop using the slides BB code because apparently it doesn't like having two rows of tabs or something :(
