Journeywoman's Journeys, A Fantasy Age of Exploration Worldbuilding Quest (Updated Daily)

I want orcs and I want to see religious world building. It's so rare as to practically be non existent in fiction so if we're literally going to building a world brick by brick I'd like to see something in that direction.

…Founded by Exiled Dissidents…

These lands were once home to a few humble farming communities and several small bands of nomads known for their wisdom, then the Exiles arrived.

Coming from far away lands, and hunted for their refusal to abandon their ideals, dissident refugees settled this region, holding close the arcane knowledge that their oppressors had tried to stamp out. These people would hold that knowledge had value in and of itself.

Not dissimilar to what we would call "Homo sapiens sapiens" on Earth, the ancestors of this people had added to their family makeup creatures of more spirit than material, and their forms today reflect those ancient pairings. The Exiles boast skin and eye colours beyond the normal range, and well as many of their kind having lines or spots of glowing light etched into their skin.

Curious and passionate, not only did these people freely share their own carefully preserved lore, but also sought out the wisdom of those they found themselves living alongside. Later when large bands of nomadic Arcane Warriors swept into the area, they found themselves integrating into the Exile's pre-existing community, and merging their own arts together and founding the first formal universities that sought out learners and students of all types.

In recent years, other species have arrived, lured by the prosperity and knowledge of the Exile's city, the most numerous of those being the tall and dusky skinned merchants known for their mercantile shrewdness.

As this city grew up it expanded the the local region,

[ ] ...In a Mountain Valley

The Exiles settled their new community in a river valley deep in the mountains, where they would be settled from any pursuers and free to practice their teachings in peace.

Over time they would build into the mountainside, and uncover mineral wealth that would help them expand their knowledge of metallurgy and the deep earth itself.

In time, though they would make the path to their city easier to travel, it is still difficult. -But to the stream of visitors that travel to the city every year, the trek is worth it.

[ ] ...On a Marshy Archipelago

Driven into trackless swamps by their pursuers, the Exiles made a home in the massive trees and small island archipelago of an area shunned by the locals due to disease outbreaks.

Using their knowledge of the arcane and natural world, the Exiles made the plague ridden swamps a forever home.

Over time the Exiles turned the archipelago into a city of canals, their streets often water instead of solid ground, and the various schools often occupy their own individual islands. Often ones made via arcane means and which show off the prowess of the school's students.

[ ] ...Atop a River Delta

On a great river delta running into an endless ocean, the Exiles situated their new community, having gone as far from their oppressors as they could by walking.

The Exiles became not just adept at riverine and ocean travel, and their city became well known as a trade hub as well as a center of great learning, the spires of their schools towering over the water's edge.

Today new students arrive by the shipload and the schools dispatch expeditions to seek out new lands, and new peoples, to boldly go where no Exile has gone before.

[ ] ...Around Several Lush Oasis

Pushed into the desert for their beliefs, the Exiles wandered for a time until they came across a string of lush Oases, teeming with life and water.

Taking their discovery as auspicious, the Exiles would choose to settle these Oases, and would become the link between several far flung groups and would trade as much for knowledge as they did for wealth, growing rich with both.

Though travel across the desert is never easy, a mere glimpse of seeing the towers of the Exile's city rising above the dunes is said to be its own reward.

For the curious I decided (only this morning, so I'll do this in the future if it works out, with specific instructions rather than post facto rationalization) to convert all the votes to a percentage, cut that in half, then add +50% from the winner to decide the ultimate demographics of the city. (70% "Exiled Dissidents", 12% "Resilient Farmers", 11% "Arcane Warriors", 3.5% "Religious Thinkers", 1.5% "Ruthless Merchants", 2% other)

You can add your own write ins! Just make sure that they're 100 words! (Please do, I wanted to do a lot more, but ran out of room!)

Did I misread something?

Why are merchants the largest minority when farmers make up 12% compared to the 1.5% of the merchants?

Did want something involving swamp.

...Hm, not sure why but kinda want to do a location inspired by Iceland or something. Just a land that while cold with snow and everything the area has plenty of hot springs. Maybe some geysers and lava lakes?

Huh, kinda wish now that I went through with a thought of doing a write in involving engineer elves. Seems like it would've been amusing just having an area of different magics but then among the more technology focused are elves.

Ah well

"2% other"

Edit: but like seriously, if you have an idea for a write in, do it! Even if it doesn't win it can be used again later or used in a different fashion

I think that part only refer to the demography of a recent immigrants. The farmers and the warriors are already in the city before and have an overall larger population
